21 reviews for Lucky 13 Hair Salon
When I walked in my hair was brown. Well, some of it was coppery red. I believe I even saw a strand or two of gray.
When I walked out, it was a uniform, all-over soft blonde. And it wasn't breaking off in clumps. This to me indicates brilliance.
This quick-service salon is much more laid back than punk. You don't need at least three piercings and a full-sleeve tattoo to be taken seriously. My stylist Jen G. was amazing. She assured me I wouldn't leave unless I was happy. And I wasn't happy until nearly an hour after closing. But, I also didn't leave until nearly an hour after closing.
Your grandmother would not patronize this salon. To me, this is a plus. They use Paul Mitchell almost exclusively (bonus for independent, humanitarian hair care). They gave me a free bottle of shampoo for being a new customer. They take walk-in's only, but you can call ahead any time that same day and get on the wait list.
Stop going to high-price chain salons (you know which ones I'm referring to) and go here. The stylists have the same education and training but still seem to enjoy doing hair. I pick enthusiasm over swank any day.
Sorry, I have to give Lucky 13 a 3-star review. I've gone in twice now with high expectations, but each time I've left with a haircut I could have gotten at your neighborhood chain-salon (e.g., Great Clips). I had two different stylists and both of them could have cared less about me to be honest. The first one didn't wet down my hair at all and cut it dry (that was a first for me) and it definitely looked that way in the end. The second rushed through and looked slightly annoyed the whole time. Like I said, pretty much your average chain-salon experience!
I wish I could say I would keep going to Lucky 13 since I'm all about supporting local businesses, but I think my 2nd visit was my last. Maybe others will have better luck with stylists!
Want an honest to Gawd burlesque star styling your hair?
Go the Lucky's and ask for Dawn, aka Karma Zabitch... A member of Viva and the Velvet Hearts.
In addition to her hotness, she happens to know a s*it-ton about hair.
And she's not the only one...
Lucky 13 is just about the only place in town you can go with baby fine hair like mine to cut, color and style... And not emerge with "mom hair" 30 minutes later... Or looking like some sort of bizarre cross between trailer trash and campus nymphette.
They also happen to be extraordinarily reasonable in their pricing, ie: this is not Kenneth's, people.
Add to the fact that they understand the way of the dude head and you're set. My guy is bald so he doesn't go here... But all his band guys do. Pretty much any scenester in town that is male is asking for Dawn and the girls.
To preface this, I'd like to say that I have never gone into a hair salon and left thinking "I will totally come back here." This rule has finally, FINALLY been broken. Thank you Lucky 13, thank you.
I called in and put my name on the list, which I was told was about a 35 minute wait. I showed up 30 minutes later and was promptly met by my stylist, Andrea.
We discussed what I wanted done, and she delivered quickly and, might I say, beautifully. I was so happy when I walked out with my haircut that some say doesn't look like I did anything. I know the difference.
Yay Lucky 13! I'll be back and send all those I can think of to your fantastically decorated hair salon. Bless you.
To start: I am extremely picky about my hair. I am white, but for some reason in the gene pool, i lucked out with the thickest, curliest, and coarsest of the bunch. Needless to say I'm picky about my stylist. And these guys were very up to par!
I found on their website that they train their novices by giving them willing clients every Thursday for very discounted rates. I signed up for a full highlighting appointment through this training program. I've never had my hair professionally dyed before, so I though I'd give it a shot. I set up an appointment a week in advance and was sat in a chair promptly upon arriving. The trainee was very attentive, but somewhat slow. All things taken into consideration, i think her skills were suitable enough for my tastes. Only downside was that I still wish my highlights could have come out a bit lighter. I would have been disappointed to have paid full price and not gotten something drastic like what i had asked and paid for. But really, I was only charged five dollars for the product used.
Im coming back to get fall highlights soon!
When I get the craving for a new 'do, it needs to be fulfilled ASAP, which is why I've been going to Lucky 13.
In total honesty, I'd been here twice before, and received mediocre haircuts. I like a stylist who isn't afraid of doing something new to your hair when you sit down. A stylist who's got good ideas and the skill to execute. The past 2 haircuts I had at Lucky 13, just didn't do it. I asked for a new style, and got a lot of the same.
That is, until my most recent visit. It had been a busy and trying week, but on Friday afternoon as I stepped into my car to head home...I knew I needed to get a haircut. Of course, I headed to Lucky 13 since they do mainly walk-ins. When I got in the chair, the stress of the week was catching up to me and I was feeling tired. I asked my stylist for a new style, and told her that she had as much creative freedom as she wanted (as long as I didn't get a pixie cut). She furrowed her brow and ran her hands through my hair, ideas formulating. She grabbed her shears and started snipping away. Now, I'll admit, I'm not always the most talkative person when I'm getting a haircut. But, my stylist managed to get me talking about everything from office drama at my new job to how gross Los Angeles is to my lovely fiance. Before I knew it, I had a really cute and sassy bob. (I'm too reluctant to mention her by name lest you all try and request her.)
Overall though, Lucky 13 is good if you're looking for something VERY specific or don't want to change your hairstyle much from what it already is.
When my short cut grew shaggy I knew it was time to redo my 'do. Being so far from home (SF), I was really nervous about where I should get my first cut... normally I don't care, but with short hair if the person messes up it's reeaallly obvious. After checking a couple of places and wisely deciding against cutting it myself, I settled on trying out Lucky 13. Probably one of the best decisions I've made so far. (Don't judge me!)
Anyways, Ryan cut my hair. She's awesome. I told her what I wanted: something like the baby of a fauxhawk and an a-symmetrical cut. In the end I got an amazingly sweet a-cut. I was really impressed by how quick she was, and yet so precise. Everything's even and my hair has never looked better. I will be coming here as long as I live in Cbus, that's for sure.
I would recommend this place if you're looking for something new, I left Ryan to her own creative juices after I just told her a couple things that I didn't like about my current length. She was very responsive. Anyways, I like no bull places & Lucky 13 made me feel like I'd found home. Price, time, cut == win.
I LOVE Aamanda! My first visit I walked in and lucked out with her. My cut from her was the first cut I had had in a very long time (years! And trying much more expensive salons!) that I loved and got tons of compliments about. Unfortunately I couldn't remember her name, but I was so desperate to have to her cut my hair again, I called to try to figure out who she was. I couldn't even really remember what she looked like, but somehow Brett was able to walk me through descriptions and figured out it was her. How's that for service?
I've gone to Aamanda for a couple of years and she ALWAYS does a beautiful job on my hair. Even though the salon's website makes her sound like her specialty is short and funky styles, my hair is longer and I'm definitely more...vanilla? I didn't know what I wanted that first time other than "hair that looks like it has a shape/style, rather than just hanging there," and she definitely gave it shape, body, and style. So I walked out with Penzey's Mexican vanilla bean, not Spice Select vanillin. Mmmmm!
The last time I went in I was a little depressed and told her I wanted a change, but probably shouldn't be making crazy decisions in my state of mind. Somehow she was able to give me a really distinctive change that was still soothing and beautiful to my recovered psyche. It was so easy to care for that even though I was traveling and had forgotten my brush(!), I could style it with my hand and it still looked great.
No one there has EVER tried to push product on me. But I bought Paul Mitchell Thicken-Up anyway, and it was very reasonably priced (cheaper than the same product at CVS here in Boston).
Now I'm very sad because I've moved to Boston (well, not sad because of the move to Boston, but sad to realize I'm going to have to find someone to cut my hair here). I bet the cut will be way more expensive and probably not anywhere as nice as what Aamanda does. But since it's been 4 months since my last cut and I don't know when I'll be back to Columbus, I have no choice and will go ahead and bite the bullet. Sigh.
Lucky 13 promotes the heck out of their No Appointments policy, but that can lead to super-long waits if you don't call ahead to find out how busy they are. But at that point, why not just allow appointments? And why would the individual stylists give you a card with their name on it if you aren't supposed to make an appointment? I guess you could call ahead to make sure your preferred cutter is working, but again: Isn't that what an appointment is?
I like Lucky 13's style and ethic. It's a salon that feels more like a barber shop because it's not full of ladies in hair foils all the time and the music is pretty good. However, I have to say that the stylists are kind of hit-or-miss. I've given them plenty of shots (enough to earn a free haircut with my punchcard) but for every three good ones there's a dud: uneven trimming along the neck, missed or stray hairs over the ear or at the temple, or something else that makes me think they didn't quite finish the job. I know I could stand up and really inspect the work in the mirror, but it looks fine until you get home and sleep on it or wash it. Maybe it's just me but I have a hard time making the style look "right" when I do it myself. And it's not like I ask them to do anything too complex: Three up the back and sides, two at the temples and over the ears, and blend it on top.
Lucky 13 is on par with any other bargain salon in the area. It used to be the case that for $20, you got an awesome haircut by an caring, artful stylist; that was my experience the first two years I went there. But the last three cuts I've had were outright awful. The stylists seemed inexperienced and didn't know how to work with my thick, curly hair. They didn't act like they cared about the outcome and rushed me through.
I really want to give them a higher rating because they are a locally owned, woman-run business, but alas. Three strikes and you're out. If you're expecting something average, fine. If you want to walk out feeling stellar, look elsewhere.
Angie and Jesee are incredible! They know what I want and do it well. My hair is all the better for it and so is my image. I get compliments all the time thanks to the Lucky 13 staff. I travel 3 hours to get my hair done for a reason and that reason is style, price and staff!
I didn't get my hair cut there so I cannot really speak to that. But I did get my eyebrows waxed. They cost about as much as the other places I've been but my experience was not good at all. First of all, my brows are totally butchered... jagged and uneven... they look really bad. Second, whatever products they used on my eyebrows has made the skin around them break out. They have been itchy for over 24 hours now and they are red and puffy. Just a really bad experience which is too bad because I wanted to get my hair cut there but this has sort of scared me away.
Easily the best salon I've ever gone to. I'm pretty fussy about my hair and like funky technical cuts that Lucky 13 delivers at a great price.
After coming here on a whim, I received one of the best haircuts ever that grew out beautifully and required little maintenance. Since then, I've tried a few different folks, ultimately becoming a regular of Adam, who's a great conversationalist, experimental but also a skilled judge of how different styles will go with one's face shape and coloring.
All of the stylists execute well, the shop carries great Paul Mitchell products, and most employees seem to truly be jack of all trades being exceptionally skilled at cutting, color, and styling. Call ahead to get an accurate wait time-- they can put you on their wait list a few hours ahead of arrival--and enjoy a really excellent, pampering experience.
Lucky 13 is predominantly a walk in salon. I have yet to be disappointed by the wait or by my haircut. The stylist are fly and do a great job with very little direction. Its one of the first places where I dont have a lot of anxiety that my stylist will have no idea what I want my hair to look like. The ambiance is amazing beautiful stylists, great music, eclectic art.
Oh, and did I mention its CHEEP?
I got a great haircut here, that's the gist of it. The stylist was friendly and did a great job.
My only knock on the place was that they only had two people working. But no biggie, I made arrangement to come back a little later and it all worked out.
I have brought my daughter here a couple of times and she loves the place. I have been a regular barber kind of guy most of the time, but I thought I'd give Lucky 13 a shot.
I'm glad I did.
Love it! I can walk from my house, no appointment. They always take care to cut my hair in the style I like. Actually we discussed what I wanted and the stylist created a cut for me - and I love it.
If they are busy they give you a rough estimate of how long it will be - I can sign my name and run an errand if necessary.
People are friendly, music is good and no extra product selling! Prices are extremely reasonable
Getting a good cut and color can be such a trial that I refuse to joke about this. I love this place. It's a great little salon with an alternative/rock-and-roll vibe. When you walk in you are treated to graffiti murals and magazine clippings on the wall of images that inspired people. If you want an unorthodox/trendy/alternative sort of haircut or a crazy color application (we are talking any color of the rainbow) this is the place for you. If you are into more traditional cuts and colors, like me, no worries. The stylists all seem to do an excellent job of both and it's not like you are being pressured to do anything crazy.
I have only really had one bad experience, and the stylist that was taking care of me that day chastised me for box-dying my own hair. I know that is not great for your hair, but money was particularly tight at that time and I didn't need to feel like a pariah for doing so. I have not seen that girl in there since. Now I see Amanda every time who seems to be a crowd favorite here... She is fun to talk to and she does a fantastic job deciphering my sometimes cryptic explanations of what I want done to my hair (I never do the same thing twice). She knows how to cut my fine hair so that it has a ton of body and the ONE time the color didn't turn out how I wanted it, she was happy to fix it for me the next day. There is also something to be said for a stylist who is willing to experiment with you, but knows how far to take it even if you don't. I always feel like I walk away from her with something fun and new for me. She is particularly good at reds, color-wise...the nuances and execution of red tones can be difficult, and is something I have unfortunately suffered through at the hands of several other stylists...but not her! My best friend goes to this salon as well and has a different girl that she is loyal to and raves about, so go a couple of times and find a stylist you really like. It won't take you long.
Now to the nitty-gritty. As far as I know they still don't do appointments any further in advance than the day of. They work mostly with walk-ins but if you plan on coming in that day I encourage you to call early and let them know what time you're aiming for, especially if there is a specific stylist you want to see. When you do this, they put you on a list and when you come in, you will be helped before the walk-ins, who never seem to wait too long. Still, they have grown rapidly in the couple of years I have been going and can get quite busy.
Their prices are fantastic. Definitely not paying Kenneth prices here. Cut, color, and tip usually run me somewhere in the $75-80 range which is the best I have found barring teaching salons and places like First Choice (yikes). And here you know you are getting quality. You can find the prices on their website, I believe: http://www.lucky13salo...
If you like Lucky 13, be sure to get their punch card. After 13 punches you get a free haircut. I am not sure if it goes by what you had done or dollar amount, but typically I get 2 punches when I get cut and color, and 1 punch for just a cut.
There was no hassle, I just went in, waited for about 5 min and was seated by the next available stylist. The cut was cute and the prices are cheap, but I did feel a bit rushed. It was off-peak hours but there were still about 3 or 4 of us waiting at a time, each pushed through quickly.
At first, I wasn't super excited with my haircut. I felt like the stylist I got didn't really care either way. But that was several months ago. My hair is starting to grow out really nicely, which was one of the things I requested, so I'm much more satisfied now. Overall, I'd recommend it, since where else can you get a haircut this cute with $20 and no appointment?
i've had 2 awesome cuts at lucky 13. everyone is super friendly and i love the ambiance. i'm totally pumped they started punch cards as well!
The best thing about Lucky 13 is that you never need to make an appointment. They are strictly walk-ins only. Score! The place is clean and trendy, and they guarantee the wait is never more than 20 minutes.
I went at 11 on a Monday morning, so there wasn't much of a rush, and was taken right away. The girl who did my hair was named Amanda, and she was cheerful and did exactly what I asked which left me thrilled, because I'd tried to get the same style at three different places before, and none of them ever did exactly what I wanted. Amanda did, and she made it look awesome.
If you're looking for a quick, stylish cut, this place rocks.
Be sure to check out their website for more detailed information. It told me everything I needed to know.
Wow, "Lucky" is certainly the right name for this place. The first time I went I got a full cut and color from Amanda. She was fantastic! A wonderful listener and a creative stylist who really knows how to give a good cut. The second time I went I just needed a bangs trim. My stylist (didn't get her name, darn it!) was rude and very snippy to me. She chastised me for using hairspray and for coming with my hair in a pony tail. It is the worst haircut of my entire life. It stuck straight up, quite a feat on my baby-fine straight hair! I looked like a #1 prize rooster. And right before Christmas!! Thankfully my hair grows fast! So I give 5 stars to Amanda, and a big zero to the rude girl.
