Brian held a (H)API Hour (http://www.hapihour.or...) here to support a new nonprofit called Citizens for the World. Their coming-out event will feature none other than Yul Kwon, Mr. Survivor, himself.
It was my first time in Lucid. I walked right past it on Sutter; the signage is subtle. The lighting here is great and the music a tad loud, but the service was terrific. The bartender that night was Katie. Pleasant, quick and a good chemist.
I liked the place so much, we're having another (H)API Hour here on March 8 (http://www.hapihour.org).
This place feels classy. I really liked the artwork on the walls. I was there for a friends sister's birthday party tonight. My mojito was great. The music was relaxing. It felt very metropolitan going here tonight with the cable cars going by, the pyramid in the background and all the hills! The hills were not good in heels. And parking took a while. But we found a free spot!
I would recommend this place. It is chill and good.
Fom the stellar space to the coconut mojitos, Lucid is right on the money. Also had a better than average glass of Zin here.
Imagine my glee when I realized it was in walking distance of my homeshed!
Lucid, I see a future for us.
UPDATE 4/2006:
Returned to Lucid last night after seeing "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" Had an excellent time and once again the coconut mojitos were fabulous!
THANKS Lucid, for helping my sister throw such an awesome party here last Friday! The venue is beautiful and I esp enjoyed the pervy photos that were being displayed upstairs, conversation or relationship starters that they were.
This place is a total hidden gem. I will def be back, with a larger group and my drinking hat on. Friend's drinks were good from the sips I had from 'em, keep it comin.
Great space!
Super great lighting and color choices!
Great drinks! Cool art! Nice that they have a basement space that has comfortable seating and more cool art so that even if it was crowded it wouldn't be.
(I prolly shouldn't Yelp while tipsy at 3:30 am, should I?)
UPDATE 14 March
So I had my birthday party at Lucid on a Saturday and I realized that Lucid is def works better as midweek happy hour spot. The thing is that (despite Clint's promise) there was no bar in the basement. This meant that our group was always split up while people were upstairs waiting forever to get a drink. You can't really use that big basement space without having a bar down there.
If though I am a little bummed that Clint changed plans on me at the last minute (I would have had the party somewhere else if I knew there wouldn't be a bar downstairs) I still will visit Lucid on weekdays when you can get a drink in a reasonable amount of time.
What a fantastic space. Is it a bar? Is it an art gallery? Is it a swanky lounge with a sultry downstairs room perfect for being naughty? Yes it is.
I might have been a little influenced by the cheap happy hour well drink and the fantastic art on the walls. Or maybe by the darling imperfections in the hardwood floors. But I don't think so. I think this place is really five stars.
Makes me want to move to the NobLoinSquare and become a whole lot cooler.
Cool space - high cielings and dark wood create an airy relaxing feeling. Downstairs space is great for dancing and hanging out - the lack of a bartender doesn't hinder my good time cuz I don't need to have a drink in my hand at all times to be happy.
Cool space to see art especially when it's mine (through April 10th).
They've opened up the downstairs area. Thursdays nights are called Bent -- some great house, electro and minimal techno. There's no cover and there's a 2-for-1 happy hour downstairs 11pm-midnight. Great cocktails and music in a great environment -- what more could you ask for?
(BTW, I'm a DJ at Bent, so I may be a little biased about the music. But seriously, Lucid is a great space.)

Lucid is aptly self titled, as I could easily have been dreaming when I came here...
This is undoubtedly a place of sophistication that doesn't rub it in your face or try to make you feel inept. A cool blend of art, wine and all the right people.
If it were possible to give this six stars I would, mainly for being host to one of the cutest girls to grace the other side of a bar. Look out for the MC Escher tattoos. :-)
There is little or nothing that is special about this place... wait - there is one thing.
I went there as a friend of a Macy*'s worker for an after-work-happy-hour - eighty percent women, I would reckon - I had a good time! (Hey - maybe I am already taken, but I can still have a conversational preference - right?)
The artwork on the walls is nice enough (though very expensive), lighting is discreet, and I enjoyed the DJ playing in the corner. But there was little else I have to to make me go back,
Other than the Macy*s crew, there were few people in the bar. I spoke to a few locals, though, who were regulars and highly rated the place - they do play good music and, apparently, they make a killer lemon drop!
So what's the one reason to go back? Three dollar drinks, man! The place is fine enough, with its $1200 artwork on the walls - but the happy hour just kept on giving! Three dollar drinks until your pockets are dry! Maybe a reason to go back. And the conversation. Maybe.
The bartender committed ALL 3 of my cardinal martini sins:
1) BRUISED THE GRAPES. Please, no ice chunks floating in my martini, thank you. Shook the hell out of my martini...dammit.
2) Lemon WEDGE instead of a twist. ARGH.
3) Filled well short of the brim. cheapskate.
The Effen vodka was not bad. Cash only, and waiting forever for the bartender to notice us when the bar was not even half full.... puts them at 1 star. +1 star for a stylish interior.
The Perks:
1. A truly great vodka martini
2. The most beautiful male bartenders in the city for your viewing pleasure
3. Pretty good artwork
4. Pomogranate Tequilla (which is amazing).
But its not a very crowded place - good for hanging our with a group of your friends after work.
2-for-1 happy hour from 11pm-2am.
Need I say more? Well, I will anyway. Great wine and art selection making it a nice spot for both business and relaxation. Late night crowd more interesting than the after work crowd. While it does get busy, it's still manageable.
For those having a hard time getting drinks...Assert yourself politely or be more organized and order with your group. Or befriend the DJs and score drink tickets. ; )
After coming here for the birfday party-party of the illustrious Lisa G., I decided to come and try this place out on a regular non-yelp night. Happily, Lucid did not disappoint.
The art gallery theme, sleek decor and great lighting just make it pleasant to be there (esp. if it is not too crowded), while the dance floor in the basement and couch area in the back are ripe for the plucking ...*ahem* :) Otherwise, major points for bringing serious mojito action close to Mi Casa.
An extra star for the BentSF night on Thursdays (that I'm yet to checkout) but I am digging some selections on their podcast!
Pretty cool spot. I just saw an awesome photography opening here.
Somewhere to go if you want a cool mellow vibe or an after work drink.
The bartender was nice, plus she made one stiff Mojito! I made that "whoa, what a strong drink" face even! It was like she poured Tequila up in there.
Cool space? Yes.
Friendly, welcoming staff? Yes.
Good Drinks? Yes.
These things are not often enough found singularly let alone together. Nicely done, Lucid.
Positive: Excellent art. Very hip and swanky atmosphere.
Negative: Downstairs is a sauna. The doorman is RUDE!
It's not that special...
Cool space. Hope they open up the downstairs soon. The mojito is the real deal, just as advertised.
Noticed that several of the art pieces had sold -- some B&W City street pictures for $425 framed, and abstract oils for a few grand.
Perhaps it's high time to break out the paint brush and camera again man, cause apparently there's enough rich suckers in this town throw out their cabbage, whether it be on avant-garde or yesterday's cheap imitation rubbish.
This place has a cozy nice feel to it. Clint the owner, is super friendly. They have a large down-stairs, but I rarely see it super packed there from a happy hour where it spills into this area.
The red ambiance is very relaxing, artwork is usually cool, and the staff friendly.
I actually do a monthly happy hour DJ gig there every 3rd Friday of the month, with a friend of mine. Stop by and check it out sometime.
Kapshure
Great place to meet friends

w/good crowd
music was good as well
The Happy Hour is Happening
Lucid is a really slick looking lounge that is divided into two floors. the main floor is all polished and nice looking, and the downstairs is all brick. when we were there, there was some really cool artwork on both levels. downstairs you could either dance to whatever dj was playing, or there was a sitting area where it was quiet enough to be able to talk and yet still hear the music really well. that was pretty cool since in most places, either the music is so quiet that it becomes background noise, or it's at a million decibels and you couldnt carry on a conversation if you tried. given how nice this place looked, i expected drinks to cost a fortune, but they didnt. a lot of reviews for this place said that the bartenders were super rude and cold, but when i was there, they smiled a lot, served us quickly, and were overall friendly.
(my resolution this year is to visit 50 new bars in SF. read about it at: http://fiftybars.thisi... )
Lucid, while being a nice, chill spot, is nothing special. On a Saturday night, the place was pretty dead, only a few other groups besides ours. Could be more of a happy hour spot, I'm not sure. They do pour a pretty decent drink. The artwork left something to be desired.
With all of the quality, character-filled bars in San Francisco, this place is a little generic.
Great spot without the attitude!!
First time I was here was for an art show and then again for a Friday night party. The show was photography on the 1st floor and other artists' works on the 2nd floor. The artwork was great - was told they change it at least once a month which will keep it interesting. The gallery/bar/dj thing they've got going definitely works - this is not a "brood over your bourbon" bar.
Bartenders were super nice - fast, warm, friendly. Cocktails were generously mixed, tried the mojito and some lemonade cocktail off the menu - both were absolutely delicious.
Djs were smokin' - late night crowd was great. But..., the place is too easy to walk/drive by and miss... get a freakin' sign!!! Worth it, though, once inside. I'll definitely be back!
sexy, swanky and hip is how i would describe this little bar/art gallery space.... ooh, and it has a dark, secret downstairs lounge. i attended courtneys wine tasting party here last friday night and she reserved the downstairs for showcasing her sommelier skills........ it couldn't have been a more perfect venue...... and the party goers were so gorgeous i got whip lash looking around. more importantly the wines did not disappoint. here was the line up:
- Gosset Brut Excellence Champagne MAGNUM
- Mumm Napa Reserve Brut
- 2004 Chteauneuf du Pape Blanc Domaine Senechaux
- 2000 La Fortuna Brunello di Montalcino
- 1997 Loville-Barton, St-Julien BORDEAUX
- Taylor 20 year old Tawny Port
- 2001 Castelnau de Suduiraut, Sauternes
afterwards our group proceeded to Jade to join the "other party" already in progress..... i left here though in a great mood and looking forward to coming back again. oh, and by the way will someone please hide all the pics. thanks.
I'm such a Union Square amatuer. I could be a Mission tour guide, but down in these parts? I have no freaking idea what to do. I'm all stupefied... uh, Arrow Bar? House of Shields? Anyway, I'm glad I went to Lucid. Now when I'm ready to have a heart attack from weaving my way through the crowds, I know of a place to sit for a well made drink. It's also nice to take a break from the dive bar routine. Sometimes you don't want to drink in a bar that smells like someone peed all over it (Gold Cane, I love you but I'm looking right at you when I say this).
Roaming around before the Theatre, we stumbled upon this spot. It was about 4:30 and we were ready for a cocktail. The bartender...(nice looking guy) offered to make us a coconut mojito. It was delicious, not too sweet. We had another, then another. Then, we went next door to Cafe Andree and missed the show! Oh well, it was worth it. The art on the wall rotates and there is a downstairs. The interior is very classy, kind of a mini Clift Hotel. Nice off the beaten path Union Square place to get a drink.
Excellent Coconut Mojitos. Very cool decor and atmosphere. The bartender also seemed to know exactly when I needed to order some drinks even though I was usually standing a little out of her line of sight. I was told that the artwork on the walls get switched out every so often so it would be nice to go back and see what new artist they spotlight... or even better if I could become one of them. hmm.
A very welcome addition to the downtown alcohol scene. Good drinks and at 2001 prices. Comfortable, warm, friendly and actually pretty great at showing off art. Small dance floor downstairs that I haven't seen in action yet.
Lucid...hmm, fun. I stopped by this great bar/gallery on Friday night (11/4) for a drink and ended up taking in the great artwork that graces the walls. Next thing you know I'm talking about my own photography work with some other artists that happen to be there...2 hours later...well, you get the idea. It's a beautiful bar with beautiful art and beautifully warm & genuine people. Clint, Lucid's owner extraordinaire, was more than helpful at all times and very active in making sure people are happy. I didn't even make it to the lower level downstairs...I'll be back for sure.
it was worth the jump over here to see this place/space. nice interior (the bathrooms though -- they forgot to include them in the design scheme: think Anyplace Chinese restaurant or Hospital Staff Corridor 2), friendly bar staff, more upscale than downscale, not at all divey, and not too upscale in the tries-too-hard way. the basement reminds me of Buzz9's basement but not as cozy. admirable concept though.
the patrons: the ratio of striped button downs was overwhelming.
I can only rate this place based off of a few happy hour visits. It's a mellow place to sit and have drinks with friends/coworkers and the prices are great. Good bartenders and $5 12 year old scotch is always a winner.
This is a fun place to hang out. Not only its a new place the paint still smells fresh but is the wine selection and art work that hangs on the wall. I see this could a great neiborhood bar.......
Lucid is a welcome addition to the Union Square gallery and bar scene. Located right next to Hang Gallery, their happy hour is always bustling. A great place for drinks before or after dinner, and so far I've been impressed with their selection of artwork (at reasonable prices). I would say this crowd is a little more professional than urban, but still a fun crowd.
We went for happy hour last week and made it there in time for one drink before the happy hour specials were over. While I understand that happy hour technically begins at 5, for those of us that work late, the 7pm cut off is a little too early. Since this criticism would hold true against most bars, I won't hold it against Lucid. The decor is perfect for happy hour- mellow, relaxing, with yummy eye candy both on the walls and behind the bar. They let us bring in food, which is another plus. Personally though, I found the mojito a little too sweet.
It was semi-slow earlier on Thursday, but the space is cool and the bartender is sweet, and the music is great. Next time going to stay for Bent. Electro, baby!
I randomly chanced on this place several months ago not expecting anything and was pleasantly surprised. It was fairly late on a weekday so the place was pretty empty, but the space seemed pretty cool and the artwork provides for interesting conversation. Plus, the bartenderess there made the best extra dirty, extra dry Grey Goose martini I've ever had in the city and even gave me the shaker so I got two drinks for the price of one.
Went to this place for a private party. I guess it's okay. I heard this place is a gallery. Looks like a bar. I'll take it as a bar. Needs a bit better ventilation, but provides a good atmosphere. It is conveniently located near to other clubs like the cellar and parking is not too far away. Will I go back to visit when there is not a private function? Probably not.
I agree with Nish that Lucid is more professional than urban. I really liked the art on display, and the drinks weren't bad, but I didn't jive with the set up of the bar. The decor was bland. The backlit alchohol setup was generic, but I think I'm more of a dive bar lady anyways.
This bar is very nice and welcoming. The bartender there is a cool girl from Holland that makes the strongest Mojitos ever....The art is displayed on the first floor and on the basement level too. The DJs start playing at around 9pm. Overall, a cool place to hangout but it was kind of empty on a weekday when I went there. Maybe the weekends is a better time to check this place out.
I really liked this place. Kinda stumbled upon it in search for an open bar on a Wednesday night, and there it was. Really mellow vibe, great art on the wall and great tunes. I liked the space too. There isn't much in the neighborhood so this is much appreciated and I will definitely be back.
