I usually come here to buy those baby Hen bottles (you know...the personal sized ones. They're so cute!) or when I'm craving junk food. Lots of chips, candy, ice cream and alcohol to choose from! Its nice working close by.
They also serve sandwiches here. Even though they're pretty cheap, I'm still traumatized from the first and last time I had one. I remember this mean lady who made my sandwich. She wore these gloves to prepare my sandwich (which is a good thing). HOWEVER she didn't bother taking them off as she collected money from me! On top of that, her gloves were all nasty and shit. Ugh. Gross. What? I'm a germophobe. But I guess I'll have to come back one and give their sandwich one more chance. The other workers here are always very nice. =P
You'd best believe this place deserves some praise.
1) everything is cheap. under $6, in fact. and most common things (like ham, turkey sandwiches) are only $4. It's ridiculous. Go there now
2) Fresh as can be. The man making our sandwiches sliced the veggies, meat and cheese in front of my own two eyes.
3) They have dutch crunch! And pesto! Ingredients of the Gods.
4) The veggie sandwich is really impressive and not skimpy on cheese, avocado, or veggies.
5) Serves alcohol and is in close proximity to the park!
Great sandwiches, with good meats, good cheeses, Try the All-Italian or Salami sandwiches. Pleasant counter people -- for the most part.

Super cheap and delicious deli sandwiches, and close to home. They have lots of choices for meat and cheeses. Friendly and quick service. Sourdough rolls were good, not super fresh but not stale either. I'm not sure about their vegetarian sandwich options, though they did seem to have a few veggies to throw onto a sandwich. Lots of drink options, both alcoholic and non. Also lots of chips and cookies. It's a deli and a corner store. I've found my neighborhood go-to spot for deli sandwiches!
This is my go-to sandwich place. The hot sandwiches are awesome! Get there before 4 (no hot sandwiches after 4). Even if it's a cold sandwich I'd still get it, but the hot ones are where it's at. Delicious.
Staff is very friendly every time I go in.
I'm a beer man, and they always have new local and import beers to try out. Always worth it to go there once in a while to see what new brews to try.
Lucca is my usual stop for beer or ice cream. They have great selections of both. The guys that work there are always nice and ready with a smile.
Don't be fooled! This place may look just like your ordinary liquor store, but the sandwiches they make inside are sooo tasty! The ingredients are fresh, and the sandwiches are pretty good sized. The owner is also super nice. If you want a sandwich, definitely check this place out. Seriously, go, right now.
This review is just based on the customer service, not the deli/food.
This place was terrible in terms of customer service, I only set foot in here to buy scratchers. Upon asking the clerk for one, he tells me that they don't sell them after 6pm (it was 5:51), but proceeded to say that he was just kidding. After buying some, he tells us to have a nice day, and all that jazz, I decided to go to the end of the counter to scratch it off. Next thing I know, he uses the same expression and tone to say "No scratching in the store". When I say "You're joking about that too right?", he basically walks from the counter to literally shoo ("Out! out!") my friend and I out the door.
Simply said, I am never coming back.
Probably one of the best sandwiches that I have ever had. Amazing. So fresh, and the beer selection was excellent. I wish I lived closer, because I can't wait to go back!
really good sandwiches. I like the meatball sandwich on dutch crunch here more than roxies. The meatballs are awesome. The new lady that makes sandwiches sucks and she seemed clumsy, put it together really loosely and didn't even melt the cheese. All the other guys make amazing sandwiches though.
When you walk into a liquor store- you expect what you get it- shady cheap booze, lotto tickets, and maybe a halo of questionability/hobo-ishness when you walk out with that "winners cup" vodka in a brown paper bag. Lucca my friends, trumps this in about every way.
Not only do these fine people sell all your favorite charcoal-filtered fun, but they do it in a friendly way. In fact, they seem to know my name- how? I don't know (maybe i'll put the blame squarely on said charcoal filtered swill).
In addition, they have super-tasty boars head coldcuts (perfect for my panini making addiction) at HALF the price of Adronicos (aka skrillonicos) a couple blocks down the street.
And finally- what gets them the vaunted 5 star rating? Two words kiddoes: Kinder Eggs. Nuff said.
hey I got a chance to try a hot turkey sandwich and it was so good.
I took it home to eat it and it was still nice and warm.
The service was a bit slow, but there was one guy in front me.
The owner seem nice and thank me for the wait.
I have to try their other sandwiches.
Kinder eggs and other European fine confections are available at Lucca. I highly recommend Kinder eggs as a dessert/conversation & fun maker for dinner parties.....probably the toys offered in Cracker Jacks back in the day were once as cool as the treasures (assembly usually required) inside of a chocolate Kinder Surprise Egg but you know the Germans still have it going on whereas here in 'merica our candy sucks.
Lots of British packaged food too, so if you need Spotted Dick in a can or Salad Cream they'll set you up.
I wish I can try other sandwiches here, but I'm just TOO IN LOVE with their turkey club w/ pepper jack cheese on dutch crunch! There are days when I decide to try out their spicy salami sandwich, but when I'm ready to order, I just involuntarily shout " TURKEY CLUB". Hey, I never regret it afterwards=)
Perhaps one say I'll have the will power to try something else on the deli menu.
The guys that work here are super friendly. The BF and his friends used to live a few blocks away from here and we'd make almost daily visits for various vices. The guys knew most of us by name, and were always really nice. One night I walked in to pick up some vodka and noticed they had a "People love us on yelp" shirt. The guys working didn't know anything about the site, so I started talking it up a lot. He ended up offering me the shirt, which comes down to my knees, but it's an awesome memento of this place. Unfortunately the BF moved and I only come in here very rarely, but the good memories hold.
Aside from a great selection of European candy and cigarettes, they also make some freaking delicious sandwiches. If you are in he area I defiantly recommend picking one up, it beats Irving Pizza down the street anyway.
Great corner store.
I come here for random snacks and booze all the time (they have 2 dollar high life here). The people who work here are all nice guys who always greet you when you come in. The store has a nice selection of drinks, liquor, and anything else you need from a corner store.
Yesterday, I had a sudden case of the munchies and decided to try a Lucca sandwich. I was under the impression that they stopped serving sandwiches past 4pm, but they actually stop serving HOT sandwiches then. The Turkey Club is delicious. Get on that.
Visiting from LA and checked the reviews. What a great place. The sandwich ingrediants are so fresh. Had the meatball sandwich and it was killer.
Once upon a time, it was a randomly hot day in the city and I was craving a cold cut sandwich that would fill the empty void in my stomach. I had spent a long day laying in golden gate park wishing that a pick up game of "throw the frisbee at the guy just trying to relax" hadn't just started next to my favorite spot. I then stumbled out of the park and upon Lucca's where I enjoyed a cheap and delicious sandwich. And I lived happily ever full.
I love this place for a number of reasons. The alcohol selection is pretty good for this side of Irving. They're open late. The sandwiches are yummy. And the staff is so nice! One guy remembers me and smiles or says hi whenever I walk by..super friendly people.
In conclusion: if I ever get snack cravings after studying all night, I can be sure Lucca Food Store will be open to supply me with snacks, sandwiches, and some friendly conversation. I love Lucca Food Store!
The ultimate bodega! :)
Sandwiches are very tasty (try the simple Ham & Turkey on dutch crunch with provologne), even though about 3-4 different people make them, depending on when you show up.
This place is very small but has a wide selection of liquor and some grocery items, as well as the deli. The counter is staffed by about 5 different people all of which are friendly and enjoy their jobs. Also they have lots of european confections (commercial)
I'm very fortunate that my friend lives just up the street so I'm able to frequent this place. I can say that I have NEVER had a bad experience nor has anyone that I know.
Come here once, and I'm positive that you'll want to come back, not only to get another sandwich, but also to just support this place in general. i find myself going out of my way just so I can drop by, say hi, and support a great place
My sister lives up the street on Judah & 20th and she's been raving about this place since she moved there last Fall. We spent last weekend at her place so we decided to check out some of the places she frequents...one of them being Lucca's.
I had the 'Italian Combo' on Sourdough Roll. You can't beat the classic combination of Genoa Salame, Mortadella, Provolone and I also had them add some Prosciutto. Delicious is an understatement. Next time, I think I'll try their signature Pesto sandwich, with your choice of 2 meats.
Another great little treat we had was their Baklava. It had a Pistachio filling that was too die for! My wife loved it so much, we bought 6 more just to take home!
Lucca's is a great little Deli on the corner of a bustling little street. If you're in the mood for a good deli sandwich, you gotta hit this place up!
Lucca Food Store has been in the Sunset District for years. It is part of the neighborhood. Sam and his family have worked hard to keep Lucca friendly affordable and helpful to everyone in the neighborhood.
The deli section has some delicious selections such as the cheese cake, carrot cake and the various side dishes, like the curry-chicken rice, etc.
Sam also has the best selection of wines for a small shop. Also, see the selection of ice cream treats..."It's It" ice cream sandwiches are there too.
Lucca Food Store is one of the little treasures of the neighborhood.
I was in the neighborhood looking for somewhere to get something for lunch. While walking around and checking out the local dining options I came across Lucca and judging by the number of people waiting for sandwiches I figured I'd give it a try.
There is a large sandwich counter filled with meats, cheeses, and homemade pies, etc. On the menu board there is a decent selection of reasonably priced hot and cold sandwiches, spaghetti, lasagna, and various deli salads. The store also has everything else you would expect at a corner store
Although there were about 6 people ahead of me when I arrived, I was out of there with a delicious sandwich in about 10 minutes.
Love everyone that works there! How do they remember everyone's names!?!?!?!
I swear I feel like I'm in the show "cheers" (yeah i'm dating myself) because it doesn't matter how I look, what I'm getting...I'm always greeted with a big and happy personalized welcome!
That alone makes me keep comin'!! ten years and counting!
THE BEST. Great Sandwiches. Awesome Store. Fabulous People.
When I moved to San Francisco, I knew I was in for some new and exciting divey-food joints to frequent, but I didn't expect that Italian-style sandwich counters would be one of them. I mean, I just figured Subway/Quizno's had it covered (Ah, those naive and suburban days). Yet it seems like I'm always going to these sort of places now. And that half of them are named Lucca.
Actually, Lucca has a lot more in common with Roxie than with Little Lucca, as it's sort of a corner liquor/convenience store that also serves sandwiches.
But be warned: they stop serving hot sandwiches at 4 PM. I learned this the hard way (and the whole reason I came after work instead of before was so I could eat it hot--true, I could do weekend lunch, but those are in short supply). Anyway, dutch crunch may be the queen of sandwich breads, but it's utterly lifeless when unheated. Fortunately I was able to salvage things nicely with my toaster.
Still, if you were to go into Roxie's at 6 PM, you'd not only get a hot sandwich, but a long line of customers. It also seems like they have more variety there, and more dedicated sandwich-makers. In short, they're more hard-core.
My suggestion: if you're in the Outer Sunset and get a sandwich craving, give the Banh Mi at Irving Cafe a try instead.
Is it just me, or is Miller High Life better in a 40 than it is any other way, even in the 32oz variety? I know, I know, I'm not supposed to like High Life at all, but we have a history.
Let's look back a bit, to 2004. Republicans controlled Congress; milkshakes brought boys to all manner of yards. Eric Steele and his camera crew were camped out somewhere near Fort Point accumulating the footage that would become The Bridge, and further down south, at the bottom of the Mission, a broke, unemployed young man could find a cheap sublet. And that was me.
I had almost no possessions. I had almost no money. My days were split between reading physics texts in the library and blanketing the city in unimpressive job applications. And in the evenings? Not a lot of options; what few friends I had were all off doing things I couldn't afford to do.
There was a liquor store a block from my apartment. There's a liquor store a block from everyone's apartment, I've come to realize, but this one was a block from mine. They had two dollar High Life forties there; Mike, the guy I sublet from, actually used that as one of the main selling points of the place, and I quickly understood why. The mean, crazy Bulgarian couple who I lived with, the loud sounds from the street, the army of cockroaches so great it could have evicted us on a whim; for two dollars, these things could be tolerated.
I moved back to San Diego, by way of my Mom's basement in Boise, after things hit the fan out here. They don't have High Life in forties down there, or at least, not anywhere I could find. Just 32's. Those get you exactly four-fifths of the way into the horrible depths of being. They are okay. I would get them often anyway. My cool friends would criticize, that I should get real beer, whatever the prize. My insecure friends would just get embarrassed when I bought it.
When I returned to San Francisco, and not in much triumph, I was pleased to return to the forties as well. They are handsome. They are stately. And, for some inexplicable reason, they taste better. They taste like kissing tears from the cheeks of an angel. And it's true, they cost between $2.30 and $2.75 now, depending on where you go. But I am not such a poor man these days, and though the part of me that will always count cents notices, and cringes, I cannot say it bothers me.
I stepped into Lucca's today seeking a late-night drink. They have been good to me before; you can get a handle of Morgan's for $30, which is very reasonable in the world of liquor stores. And their selection of other, none boozy stuff is ample enough. Plus the guys behind the counter talk to everybody like a person, which leads me to suspect that they haven't been doing this for very long. But it is still appreciated.
I considered my options, contemplating the selection of alcohols carefully, not too impressed but not expecting much. As a wealthier man must feel at the only brothel in town, looking over its living menu... Eventually I settled on the High Life 40, for its history and whatnot. I had been comparing prices, but there were none marked here. But so what? I am not such a poor man any more, I remind myself, that I must worry about the prices of forties.
I bring it up to the cashier. There is one person in line: He buys two packs of condoms, and the clerk makes some joke about his implicit sexual prowess which I don't quite understand. I am grinning politely, the obligation of the man who has overheard, as I come up to make my purchase. "Two something," is all he says, except the something is not the word, just something unintelligible. Exactly what I expected; but as he hands me back eighteen dollars, I check the cash register. Two, just two. The "something" he said must have just been "dollars", and I go slack-jawed. The thing in me that still counts the cents is rejoicing. The cashier seems to notice a little and seems inquisitive, but I shuffle off before he can inquire. It is something too much of a story to tell.
Lucca is one of those understated corner stores that locals know to be a lynchpin of the neighborhood. When at any odd hour I realize that I need ketchup or toilet paper or tabasco sauce or ice cream or a bottle of fernet branca for a birthday gift, I never wonder where to go. Also their sandwiches are TOP NOTCH. The shop is run by personable, friendly, and helpful who give the impression that they genuinely care about their neighbors and understand the concept of a neighborhood store/deli. Stop in for a sandwich when you're in the hood and you'll be glad you did.
I work half a block from this great place. I love their sandwiches. Hot or cold? Your choice. They make it fresh and right in front of you.
The people working here are always friendly and nice. I usually chit chat with them about Life and the meaning of it. Yea right, we usually talk about beer because they have a wide selection of it. They open late so if you are hankering for a small bottle of smirnoff, this is the place to be.
Go try their sandwiches, cuz I once bribed this chick that I will get her one from Lucca, if she brushed my teeth in bed and wash my feet while I watched TV. It works! Works better than diamonds and designer handbags!
Another sandwich? What will you do for me?
Oh Lucca, you were so good to me. Remember all those late nighters we spent together. I...drunk, you...open, begging me to come in and purchase your sweet sustinance. Your sandwiches were always good (before midnight) and I could never get enough of your employees. Especially the night when we got to go behind the counter and play keyboard on the sandwich boards...now that was fun!
You were always good for a cheep bottle of Crown and a hershey-almond bar!
Best beer selection in the sunset and open until 2am. If I could give 6 stars I would
everything youd expect from a corner store, and more! Fine Selection of ice creams, drinks, cheap booze, lots of chips! The dudes who work the counter are great! Friendly, for real. Sometimes they have pecan pie, which in this city seems hard to find.
Cheap Cigarettes, a great beer selection, actual groceries, and a trio of smart-assed mo-fos manning the counter.
What more could a girl (or boy, or reptile) want in a neighborhood corner store?
Seriously?
This is my go-to place in the Outer Sunset for a quick sandwich. Well...this place and Irving Street Deli, which is really a specialty Vietnamese joint.
Lucca makes a pretty good tuna salad sandwich. I always order mine on a sourdough roll with bacon on it, 'cos that's how we roll west of 19th avenue. I don't order these too often anymore, but once you've had the tuna with bacon, its hard to suppress that craving indefinitely.
They also have pretty good deals on beer every once in a while, and a better than expected, although quite limited, selection of wine. They have a number of unusual foreign products around the store too, ranging from candy to steak sauce, condiments, beer and ethnic dessert items.
If all this wasn't enough, their chalkboard menu is one of the most eye catching display pieces in the neighborhood.
Great deli, very reasonable prices on fresh mozzarella and ricotta, thinly shaved prosciutto, etc. Best of all, their ravioli is divine, and their homemade pesto and bolognese sauces delicious.
No, it's not Brooklyn, or even Bleeker Street, but this stalwart of a little Italian delicatessan is LOVELY.
And fabulous customer service.
This is a great corner store, they make excellent sandwiches (providing they're listening to your request) and they always wave to familiar faces. Sam, the owner is extremely gracious and will go out of his way for you. Ken and Ray are friendly too, but the sandwich maker is not always consistent as new faces show up from time to time and sandwiches vary with who makes them.
FYI, one thing I noticed, which you may need to pay attention to, is to read the expiration dates on the ice cream and dairy products (even the salsa and eggs) . I've purchased some items that were way beyond the expiration date. Because the place doesn't have the high turnover that a supermarket would have, some stuff gets pushed to the back and accidentally sold. The guys need to be better at checking the dates!
Otherwise, some pet peeves are the additional charge for using a ATM card (.50 cents) for purchases less than $10.00. This bothers me because using debit cards are pretty mainstream and accepted widely without a surcharge. Nonetheless, I understand passing the cost onto the consumer, but there's got to be some other way to absorb the cost.
FInally, this place has the best selection of European chocolates that I have yet to find elsewhere. You pay about twice as much as a standard candy bar, but well worth it since you can taste the difference! I like Lucca's and think it's an asset to the neighborhood, I wish some of the other places were as friendly!
Gotta love Lucca's!!! They're always so nice (Ken rules!) and they also have everything I need. I live right up the street from this place and it's definitely my favorite liquor store.
I live two blocks away, so I find myself here alot.
They have all the stuff you would expect at a corner store, beer, cigarettes, basic groceries, etc. But they also have a great little deli with lots of cold and hot sandwiches, cold and hot food items and cakes and pies. The sandwiches are pretty reasonably priced. Also they have a lot of interesting international items, such as the Aero chocolate bars I love so much.
How did I live half a block away from Lucca for two years before deciding to try their sandwiches?
Soooooo good!
Everyone at Lucca is super friendly to boot. Highly recommended.
Lucca's has been a regular stop of mine since high school. These guys know my buddies and I personally after years of good service. They keep our Beer cold and 40s cheap. Open late and good sandwiches. Sometimes I just stop by to chop it up with the "cousins."
Cousin Nation Domination!
