So it's doesn't have the best cafeteria food or the highest technology available, but God damn I loved me some LUC.  I almost left after my freshman year, but after getting the guilt trip from my parents I decided to stay. I still thank them to this day.

I had one of the best professors here & she made me decide to change my major to Sociology despite all the hype about not getting a job after graduation, being poor for the rest of my life, etc. etc. I also had a lovely TA (Miss. Meghan B) who convinced me to stick it out even if I felt it was a bit too tough. I took that class my freshman year & those words & encouragement are what kept me going through all 4 years.

I think the professors truly care about their students & try to get to know each one personally. I think they are very accommodating if a situation, sickness, or something else arises & a students must miss class. I also think the classes were extremely interesting & am proud of all the knowledge I've gained from LUC.

As if the academics aren't enough becoming a part of Chicago & it's hussle bussle lifestyle came hand-in-hand with my adjustment to Loyola. I made some of my greatest friends while at Loyola. Without the comfort of my school & fabulous Loyola friends, I doubt I'd still be in Chicago.

Hurray for Loyola! Hurray for my professors! Hurray for my education! Hurray for a fabulous 4 years!

Oh Loyola. I share a neighborhood with you. While you are officially in Rogers Park- most of your students and dormitories reside in Edgewater. I used to have pretty positive thoughts towards you, but , alas, they have changed.

You have been purchasing apartment buildings and turning them into dorms. No problem there, but- well, it has certainly increased the amount of trash, debris, and throw up that resides on the sidewalks. Yes, I had to mention that last piece due to the fact that my dog is attracted to it- I spend a great deal of our walks avoiding puke piles. It has gotten to the point where I avoid the streets by the dorms.

You are a tax free- religious and educational institution. You contribute nothing to our tax base- yet you take quite a bit. As a neighbor, I am getting to the point where I have had my fill.

This refers to the law school which I enrolled in last fall since I was so pleased with the education I got as an undergraduate way back when.

I expect any law school to be competitive. But I also expect efficient, expert help with financial aid questions, and questions for the dean regarding the program and its people. The facilities have terrible ventilation so even in the winter the rooms are stifling. Although the administration was told of this, they didn't fix the problems. They figure they've got your money, so why should they bother helping you.

There are much better law schools in the city.

Just wanted to note the campus keeps getting more and more gorgeous. But, we've had way too many security problems and now I get worried even walking around after 9pm. Loyola needs to do more about security. Especially on the north side.

Ok, I've rethought my immediate post-graduate angst...

My education at Loyola University Chicago has not held me back from anything. Certainly not Ivy League...and obviously overshadowed by Northwestern...but above adequate.

The improvements continue...every time I drive by campus I see a new building, some cutting edge development, etc.

Good work, Ramblers. Whatever they are ;)

Loyola students have it great. When I went to Loyola, many student were commuters and the campus was quiet and only LSD was open for meals. I'm envious of the students now, but I still love my experience at Loyola. Classes are not easy. People don't go to Loyola for easy. Keep with the improvements! :)

After living in the Edgewater/Rogers Park neighborhood for ten years, I have to say that I don't like Loyola students generally.   It's hard to believe that Loyola is a Jesuit-run university, because the students act so TRASHY!  The absolute TRASHIEST, BASEST students live in my building on Northshore Beach.  One of the neighbors called the police on these guys who moved into the building on their first night here.  They are consistently loud, rude, completely disrespectful and inconsiderate to their neighbors.  They ruin living along the beach.  I can't understand what this thing is with white kids listening to gangsta rap all the time--even on campus.  And Loyola students look terrible, too.  Generation Y is definitely generation ugly.  They look like your worst neo-early 1970s nightmare.  Walking around campus, you can plainly see that about 80% of Loyola guys look and act like the negative popular stereotype of "blue collar"--the way they talk, act, their homophobic-sports attitudes, everything.

Loyola is overshadowed by the heavy hitters in town (Northwestern, DePaul, U of C), but it's a good, no nonsense university. It's run by the Jesuits, who do not brook the kind of foolishness that gets Northwestern into the news. When I went here, it was known for being one of the few schools in the country that was consistently in the black. Loyola now owns much of Rogers Park.

Loyola used to be primarily a commuter school, but it has concentrated on attracting out of state students for the past 25 years. Because it's a smaller school, students actually get a better education than at a lot of other place. When I was a student, I never had a TA as a primary teacher. Actually, I only had one TA over four years, and that was in a large psychology class. On the other hand, when I went to grad school, at a larger university, undergrads were lucky to see a full professor, especially in their first two years.

Excellent Law and Medical schools, on other campuses.

I went to Loyola for graduate school (Higher Education) and now I work here. As a student, I really appreciate the depth of knowledge my professors possessed and how student-centered my classes were. I made life-long friends with very great people in my program, and I have enough contacts to keep me employed for life. My professors have been very quick to be helpful in writing recommendations or doing an introduction for a job I was applying for.

Most of my classes were at the Water Tower campus off of Michigan Avenue. Nowadays, they have a lot more options for quick, cheap bites and coffee. All the construction down there means that Loyola is growing and investing more in the education of its students. The students that I encounter every day (both grad and undergrad) continue to charm me with their friendliness, enthusiasm, and great manners. And I absolutely love how diverse and increasingly global the student population is!

So......great school if you want to live, work, and make a difference in Chicago.

The Jesuits take education very seriously.

Coming to Loyola was one of the best decisions I ever made. They take to heart the concept of educating the whole person. As a business major, I not only took the standard business school classes, I also took very interesting and thought-provoking courses in philosophy, theology, women's studies, and art. As with any university, there are good professors and bad ones, people you'd love to strangle in Financial Aid, and the "birdie" classes you totally blow off. But Loyola boasts a tremendous amount of diversity, just look at where the Lake Shore Campus is situated. The diversity, the educational philosophy, location, and the financial aid are what put Loyola far above any other school I looked at. If you're a business major, the Business Career Center is a goldmine of opportunities.

Taking everything into account, Loyola is worth every penny.

The biggest controversies in the past four years: closing down the Science Library and converting it to a one-stop administrative center, Ann Coulter on campus, building over the Jesuit Residence & lawn, the TIFF money, and complaints from alumni that Loyola is getting too liberal.

I attended Loyola for my undergrad from 2000-2004. I'm really jealous of all the new buildings that have gone up since then!!!

I had a generally good experience at Loyola. The Lake Shore Campus is beautiful, and one of the reasons I chose Loyola over DePaul. Academically, I feel like I was challenged enough without being intimidated. My first year was a bit harder/more intimidating than I expected because I breezed through high school. The next three years were much better because I learned how to study, research and write.

I didn't have many run-ins with administration, so I can't offer my two cents there. Any dealings with financial aid were generally positive - I know we were able to appeal for more money a couple times.

Socially, Loyola is in the middle of a major metropolitan area. The reason the social life on/around campus sucks is because it isn't necessary - you have the entire city of Chicago to enjoy, why do you need a college campus to keep you entertained? The city was the main reason I picked Loyola, so I probably wasn't as involved at Loyola as I would have been at U of I or some other middle-of-nowhere school because I was too busy enjoying the city. I think this is the case for many students. So if you are looking for that traditional college experience (frat parties and football games, I guess) and need your college to entertain you, look elsewhere. If you are looking to enjoy a world-class city, Loyola is a great choice. The L runs right by campus, as do many buses bound for downtown or other neighborhoods.

On the other hand, it would have been kind of nice to see more school spirit. and feel more like a community. I don't know if that has improved at all.

Finally, I met many nice people at Loyola and feel that the student population is pretty diverse. I was able to learn a lot about other cultures both in and out of class.

Loyola is a good school.  There have been a lot of changes since I went to school there, some I think are great, other changes really make me sad to see what is gone!

I think the location of the school is awesome.  I loved living in Rogers Park and by the water.  It was great to be close to Evanston, and it was so easy to get downtown for class on CTA or the shuttle.

I kind of liked the "dirt under the finger nails" style/look/attitude Loyola had when I went there though.  Right now, I feel like they are doing too many "capital" projects - tearing down old buildings to put up new ones.  I liked the slow and steady LUC of the past.

Great school, a tier 1 university, only complaint is one campus is in Rogers Park which is a neighborhood getting worse and worse. On the plus side, they are trying to develop on land they own surrounding the school with a development called Loyola Station. Props for that.

I don't know anything about the academics at Loyola.  As a neighbor, I wish the students were more respectful of others.  Since installing the "safety station" by the Granville Red Line, the kids feel safe enough to use the stop.  To the dismay of local residents, after most trains starting around midnight, we are guaranteed an auditory delight of rowdy students making their way home from the bars.  I have no issue with them releasing steam, but would prefer them to do it quietly.  I have contacted a representative from Loyola, but wasn't really offered a solution.

I've been a Loyola Student since 2001 (Undergrad and Grad School).  I've been very happy with the education I've had there so far.  Overall, the professors are great (with only a few exceptions).

Student groups (read: extra curricular groups) tend to be a joke at best, however this is not the university's fault.  This school is not exactly a party school, so be prepared to have to work a bit in order to find fun.

One of my big complaints is that the University is pretty good for having large amounts of red tape and lousy student services.  Likewise, I didn't appreciate some of the rude administrators.  It seems that most departments do not work together or even talk to each other.

Don't let that discourage you, though...  Its a good place to be as a student.  I don't regret going to Loyola.  I may bitch and moan about certian things (some not stated in this review), but I still love it there.

I had to get out of here.
I couldn't take being so bored all the time.  I dormed here with a great roommate that I still talk to today, but this school is just soooo BORING!!!
Expected it to at least have a party going on once every weekend, but all of my fun partying was always done off campus with non-Loyola students.
But I guess there were some-what decent classes..... but still....BORING.

I'm and alumni and I really want to give my school 5 stars but I'm giving it four.  I loved the way the education and curriculum was set up.  I made a lot of friends and good contacts.  The professors are very bright and open minded.  And residence life was very accomodating and understanding.  I was a theatre major so the lack of star comes from that.  I work as a dancer, choreographer in addition to commercial acting so these statements are ligit.  The theatre department lacks an understanding of diveristy and isn't really keen on color blind casting or giving opportunities to minorities.  I never really felt like it was fair competiton for auditions because my race was such a silent deciding factor for parts... I made up for this doing a lot of outside professonal work.  There answer for this was to do only August Wilson plays (4 or 5 were produced while I was there) but never every black actor is designed to play those parts and so I proudly walked about campus as a theatre reject :)

All in all the University is awesome and has made a lot of changes.  The neighborhood is nice and both water tower campus and lakeshore campus have their own magical spark.

I attended Loyola for my undergraduate degree from 2002-2004. It was not for me. The campus was beautiful and most of my professors were good, but overall there were too many problems for me to stay.

1) their roommate placement. Awful. And the administration and RA's didn't help much at all. I had a friend who had to move dorms because her roommate threatened her life. Yea.
2) My freshman year they took on more students than they had dorm rooms. They turned the "community" spaces with kitchens and lounges on each floor into dorm rooms for students. Some people got put up in hotels... Not only was it overcrowded, but it was sloppy-administration was seemingly unprepared for the glut of move-ins they approved.
3) Dining Services. I was a vegetarian and had little more than cheese quesadillas, veggie burgers, portabello mushroom burritos and grilled cheeses to eat.
4) The expense. My freshman year was $41K with meal plan, books, room and board and tuition. For ONE year.
5) Administrative red tape. I was assaulted the week before finals and then tried to get clearance to get incompletes in my classes since I was traumatized and just wanted to go home. Yea, out of my 5 classes, I got  incompletes approved for only 2. The others I ultimately failed for what I still feel was no fault of my own. Because of these failed classes my cumulative GPA tanked and I lost my scholarship. The fact that they were so unwilling to help an ASSAULT VICTIM really rubbed me the wrong way.
6) TWO YEARS after I transferred, I tried to get a transcript from them (which I'd done before successfully) only to have them tell me I mysteriously had a library hold on my account for overdue library books that I didn't have!
7) After my transfer I got married and changed my name....I notified them and gave them a copy of my marriage license- only to have them send further correspondence to my maiden name and my father's old address.

The class size was good, the professors were good. The campus was beautiful and I do feel like the quality of the education itself was good, but there were so many other downsides I couldn't justify giving them any more of my time or money.

considered one of the nation's best colleges. #112 out of all university/colleges as a matter of fact. a little bit more selective. one of the few jesuit colleges in the nation.. don't let that scare you-- many students aren't moved by faith. good colleges for the medical field, business, and law. i wonder why it didn't get the "best value" award. oh that's right, because it's totally not worth 35 grand a year.

90% of students are given financial aid by the school, which means many students are highly intelligent because they were granted scholarships. some are just highly snobbish though sport fake louis vuittons- the kind with fake leather peeling from the handles..

anyway, you'll see more northface jackets and backpacks than you'll see in the michigan ave. northface store and even more ugg boots. the majority of the students look the same because of this.

there are many commuter students. many also dorm, but it's not as big of a party school compared to the other universities in chicago. campus activities include studying and being bored and maybe sneaking in some kind of alcoholic beverage at a get-together. or at least that's how it is being a freshman.

it has this shuttle bus that takes you to and from the water tower campus in a mere 17 minutes. you'll be lucky if it comes though. it never does for me.

being an older site, it's kept many of its old buildings. my favorite is the traditional library. it has a quiet study room that sits over 200+ that could be comparable to something you'd see in a movie. it's beautiful with sprawling green lawns and a great view- it being on the lakefront and all. some professors are jesuits, and some nuns. it's kinda cool.

Fine school, and not as conservative as you'd think despite its Catholic heritage.  Most of the people I knew here were atheist or agnostic.  The school was smart to expand its campus through the North Side and in downtown.

I am a Loyola grad.  I actually attended the Mallinkrodt, Sheridan Road, Maywood and Water Tower campuses.  I took a required course one summer at the Water Tower campus. It was very pleasant with expert professors and pleasant students. Parking was pretty good as we were able to get validated parking within the garage. I would strongly suggest that any student who attends any of Loyola's campuses, try to take at least one class at the Water Tower site.

Great university for commuter students! It's a pretty nice campus right by Lake Michigan...I love taking my breaks and just sitting on the grass by the lake! Not all that great for dorming so I hear...and not much of a party school. Great institution for those wanting to go into a medical field. Wonderful and intelligent professors!

I went here for undergrad and what can I say?  I found the professors to be okay, the administration to be horrible to deal with and the campus life somewhat lacking.  However, if you don't have to party 24/7 or if you would rather go to the Northside bars, you'll be fine.  I ended up commuting my second year and I didn't miss anything on the campus life scene.  Just study and do your time and you will be fine.

As someone who graduated from Loyola and currently works there, I have to say I love it here.  Like many colleges, there were ups and downs of course.  I had some blow off classes and lackluster professors, but on the whole, I had an amazing time.  They give really good scholarships and financial aid when I started here four years ago, though I'm not sure if they still do.
