"Very good selection, and the best prices in Manhattan. _____"
10 reviews for Lowery Liquors & Wine Company
First of all, this place is great. In terms of selection and price, I do not think you will find better in NYC. Yes, trader Joe's has cheaper prices, but you have to go to another state to find a trader's that does both wine and liquor.
In wines, they have a very broad selection (you name a region and variety, they are going to have something), and they actually go pretty deep in certain areas (very good selection of mid-range californian wines, for example.) For liquor, they have just about anything you would want. If there is some super-specialty item that they don't stock, they will order it for you.
In terms of price, this place is across the board cheaper by at least a couple dollars/bottle compared to any other liquor store I have been to in NYC. Also, if you need to buy wine or booze by the case, they always have deals.
And, they are open on Sundays! (limited hours, I think until 5pm.)
Here not only you could get every type of liquor but they have a very impressive selection of wines
Family run shop with loads to chose from. The Staff behind the counter and the older men give the best advise. Every so often they give wine tastings. If you don't see what you want they will order it for you...They do this for moi with Bollinger and Paul Roger,,, Also if you're a VERY GOOD CUSTOMER and sweet they will offer you home delivery if you live close by....Be advised, during the hollies the line is literally out the door and down the block....
Two things.....
1. Ron Zacapa Centenario. They have the 15 year and the 23 year. Both make for a wonderful drink, to be taken strictly neat or on the rocks. Lowery offers Zacapa for roughly the same prices that they charge at the duty free in the Guatemala City airport. Not that I don't bring home the duty free version (there's something about drinking my Guatemalan rum with the little Quetzal seal on it that brings a tear to my eye), but it's great to have Zacapa so close by when Guatemala is not. This is truly how Lowery won my heart.
2. Bharbancourt rum. See above for drinking instructions. Wonderful Haitian rum, smooth yet leaves a palpable fire in your belly. If I close my eyes and take a sip, I can transport myself back to that little resort in Cormier Plage, Haiti, owned by diving buddies of Jacques Cousteau's, where I spent 3 gorgeous days in 2001, and that little spot of beach in front of the hotel. It was like we had our own little lagoon.......
You can spot me sometimes at parties toting around a bottle of this rum.
Lowery Liquors is a huge place chock full of libation. Me likes. You will too. And save me some Zacapa, will you?
Grace is totally correct about the selection. There's a wide range of wines from all over the globe, and definitely at prices anyone can afford. Even my sister, who is very much a wine connoisseur, likes the variety that's stocked and even found some interesting bottles.
Of course, they also have plenty of hard liquor of the usual assortment - vodka, gin, rum, scotch, whiskey, etc. I also enjoy their sake and soju collection, which isn't big, but there's enough types from which to choose.
The staff is also very nice and friendly. Although I don't go in there every week, they always seem to remember me, which makes me feel more a part of the neighborhood. About the only thing which bums me out about Lowery's: they don't stock my favorite brand of champagne.
Anyway, if you live in the neighborhood, this is the place to get your hooch.
Best liquor store in Sunnyside, hands down. Some staff there know nothing, and others (look for the older Guyanese man standing around) really know their stuff. Great, great wine selection and all the standard spirits. Decent selection of scotch. Have occasional sales on wines that are worthy of a stock-up.
It's like the Trader Joe's Wine Shop, only sooo much closer to my place and not chock-full of NYU kids. The wine runs the gamut from cheapo to fancy and comes from all the great grape-growing regions.
Once I asked for a mega-bottle of Sonoma muscat (which they usually have). When the manager realized they were out, he gave me two regular bottles for the price of the uber-bottle. Why, thank you!
My favorite liquor store, of course I've been coming here since I was 17. Every time I go to Sunnyside, betcha by golly wow I always buy my liquor here. Alcoholic? No not at all...ok maybe only on the weekends. LOL
Cheap!!! Paramount selection of wines!!! Much better that overrated Trader's Joe Wine Store on 14th St (this TJ is so much more expensive than its Californian brethren) Lowery L& W has cheap cheap cheap selections bordering on ridiculous - 2 magnum sized Chilean Frontera Rose for $9.99. Magnum Gato Negro sauvignon blanc for $5.99. Awesome varieties of malbec. Decent selection of vinho verde under 5 and zinfandels under 10 (Raven's Wood). Many specials year-round! Actually I'm heading there right now, because there is nothing lovelier on a hot, humid July day than a glass of chilled Aveleda. And even the most rabid Dark Lord is inclined to put his feet up and feel amicable towards the world, especially if it's offering him such deals. Cheers!
(Only fault I can find is that every time I go there, someone will ask me if I need help. Every freaking time. I'm there often, so I know my way around. Annoying!)
I have to say this place has exceeded my expectations. They have had everything I've gone in looking for. Even pomegranate liquor! The other day I needed grappa for a recipe. They had a better selection than the places I've looked in Manhattan. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. I only wish they offered delivery since they do discount wine by the case.
