I hate when you have to find new local faves when you move. Well I hate and love. This place is far from the hate side. Found it after many bad experiences elsewhere, and went in will rock-bottom expectations. I was glad that they were way more than exceeded.
Staff was super friendly, and the server was able to clearly explain the various dishes to my parents and give them satisfying meals. They were never strong on Asian food so that's pretty good right there.
But the important part was that I got a good meal. I thought it was a good price, and they had a few other things I'm intending to try. Wasn't the best I've ever had, but pretty good. Probably will be at the top of my delivery list.
Well we're still working through the restaurants in our new neighborhood. To not much success I may add - and had a hankering for Chinese. Since Lotus reviewed well on Yelp we figured we'd give it a try.
We went in to order take out and were told it would be 10 minutes. Half hour later we got our food. We could look past that since they were busy. We figured that was a good sign. Nope.
We got home and were impressed with the packaging, but that's about it. Nice reusable containers. We ordered the shrimp with vegetables, sweet and sour chicken, yang chow rice and egg rolls.
I'll start with the shrimp and vegetables. The dish had mushrooms in it which we typically love. These mushrooms were super strong flavored and not in a good way. It overpowered the dish making it inedible. The cat ate the shrimp.
The sweet and sour chicken was too heavily breaded and soggy. Not good. Although the sauce had large hunks of pineapple and green pepper that were good.
The eggrolls were not normal eggrolls they were more like spring rolls. Very thin crust. But the filling was just not good. It was like they took all the left over ingredients and ran them through a food processor. It was just mush.
The upside - they included three almond cookies along with the fortune cookies.
Also thought they were a little bit pricey.
Verdict: we won't be going back.
Good food, ESP the pineapple fried rice. Service can sometimes be slow but always friendly. Reliable and consistent. Worth going. Great with pick up orders, always hot and ready to go.
Never have had a problem with napkins.
My mom loves this place. She's 65 and retired and has time to be a lady who lunches and therefore. . . she loves this place. The lunch specials are dy-no-mite!! So cheap and so delicious. Minus the complimentary spring roll. But it's complimentary, so I don't discount for that.
Everything I've ever had here (egg foo young, garlic shrimp, chicken lo mein, moo shu pork) is good, good, good. The waiters are ancient and curt but Catonese is so in and out you don't expect them to linger and regale stories from their childhood. Get me the food and watch me scarf it down.
The only thing I wish is that the lunch discount applied to carry-out orders. Because sadly, I am not a lady who lunches per se, but I do get hungry.
This place is not so great. The food was brought out cold and flavorless. I like my food with flavor and hot. The service is horrendous. Excuse me can I get a napkin. Server replied by saying- No we No Have Napkin. My responds- Jesus no napkins I understand recycle and going green but here are you serious. The napkins they had were the drink napkins the thin little small squared ones. The hell is that. or they had the cloth ones. Thoughs don't do me justice. I will not be going back. Bad service and horrible tasting food.
We ordered food from here when we first moved to the neighborhood. Didn't know of any other Chinese place around and I didn't discover Yelp until a couple of years later.
I did not like this place at all... everything tasted bland and I have never returned since.
Pretty good food, but slow service. Friendly atmosphere, though.
I had a tasty beef satay, and a decent plate of brocolli and garlic - during the lunch hour, a small bowl of egg drop soup and a spring roll came with the brocolli entree. So did hot tea.
Good amount of food, plus a Diet Coke for about $16. Not cheap, but tasty enough to go back for more next time I am out there...
As Oakparkdad:
Recently the kids have finally relented to adding Chinese food to the list of acceptable edible items. So we have entered back into the West suburban search for the perfect Orange Chicken (the favorite kid item).
On the NW corner of Harlem and North Avenues, in the strip plaza behind the Walgreens. The wait staff is very very attentive and nice and they don't make too many faces when we leave more food on the floor than was on the table. The kids like the tea after it is cooled off and 5 packets of sugar per. At the end of this review: the food is pretty good too. M and I usually get the orange beef and I love the spicy schezwan dumplings. We sometimes eat in the restaurant but the takeout isn't bad either. Portions aren't huge and leftovers are rare.

Lotus has a great lunch special-- try the seafood noodle-- nice scallops, some shrimp, fake crab (would rather do without that) in a nice sauce. Good empress chicken too.
Have been in there with a rowdy group of friends or by myself often, and always have good, quick service and a nice meal. Way above average for a neighborhood Chinese place (but doesn't come close to my favorite in Wrigleyville-- which is elegant splendor, fancy tablecloths, wonderful food and cheap prices....)
Not your average neighborhood Chinese restaurant. They are a bit more expensive than most, but the food quality is way superior than most places. The atmosphere is very comfortable & the staff is very friendly. If they delivered, we would order often. When we do order take out, they have everything waiting when we get there, well packaged & hot.
Lotus is a great neighborhood gem. My friends and family have been going here for years. I've since moved yet I still return because I can't find a restaurant in my neighborhood that makes potstickers as tasty as Lotus. I have yet to be disappointed with anything I've ordered.
