I love Mexican Food, and I have very discerning palette when it comes to this genre of food.
The service is not great, but what the service lacks in, the food surely makes up for.
When rating a Mexican Restaurant I typically rate it on their chips and salsa (very literally the first impression).
All of the tortillas are made in house and fresh, their chips are simply delicious! They are crisp, crunchy and have a wonderful double layer that creates the best texture I have ever had in a chip. The salsa is also very good, with a hint of spice and a lot of freshness.
I had the chile relleno as my entree which is served with rice. The cheese inside the chile was slightly salty and gooey and the outer crust was perfectly cooked, and the rice was seasoned nicely.
I have been back 3 times since and love this place.
It is also nice in the summer because they have outdoor seating and they allow you to sit there as long as you'd like.
Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this restaurant.
I wanted more than anything to like this place!
But the unfortunate truth cannot be over looked...
1. dry chicken tacos
2. mediocre rice and beans
3. chorizo is sweet with cinnamon after taste :-( blah
4. server forgot part of our order and didn't come back to check on us.
5. Hot day, very little water, and slow on the refilling of our margaritas.
Their prices are reasonable.
Date Rating: 4
Pick up Scale: 1
Strong Suggestion: Avoid the chicken tacos and chorizo
I'd been wanting to try this place for awhile, it just looks fun. So I came here for dinner on a weeknight with my boyfriend and we sat on the sidewalk. The first table we sat at had flies everywhere so we moved to a different table.
I couldn't decide whether to get the nachos or the vegetarian enchiladas, but I ended up going with enchiladas, to be slightly more healthy. I really liked them - they were cheese and spinach, covered in spicy green sauce. The black beans and rice on the side were really good too, nice creamy beans. And they have happy hour sangria specials - $4.50 a glass!
So, not the best place ever but it's tasty enough and affordable enough that I would return.
Great chile rilleno!
After a day living with no heat and hot water because our landlord didn't pay his bills, and exhausted from unpacking in our new apartment, we were looking for something quick, that wasn't pizza.
We ordered vegetarian tacos, tostadas and got a side of rice and beans. Breakdown:
veggie tacos - slightly soggy and black beans weren't flavored
tostadas - see comments about veggie tacos
rice & beans - totally bland, I was looking forward to rice with nice flavor and good aroma...but there was no flavor, just undercooked and mellow yellow
Lastly - and perhaps most disturbing, was that we recently found out that this place was inspected and their restaurant was written up for having evidence of rodents and a whole host of other things that make me fear for people who are eating there...
You know, I live really close to Los Pollitos and for some reason it took me almost 10 months to make it over there. Now, I'm not too upset about it. I've found better, more substantial Mexican in the neighborhood.
The salsa is spicy, but the guac kind of bland (although very fresh!). My boyfriend got a burrito, which was kind of lame in size, considering how massive they are at some other closeby restaurants. I got a shrimp dish that I can't remember the name of, with plantains and a tomato, caper and olive sauce, and for some reason the meal just creeped me out. Again, it was pretty bland - which is so unusual for me to say, especially about Mexican.
I want to give this place the benefit of the doubt, so maybe I'll go back and try something else. We'll see.
My boyfriend and I came here at about 5pm only to find we had missed the breakfast menu but were both craving eggs. They were kind enough to oblige and let us select off the breakfast menu which was nice of them. I had a special mexican breakfast (don't remember the name) with sauteed veggies, eggs, rice, beans, eggs, and a bunch more goodies I can't remember. It was actually really satisfactory and good. My boyfriend had huevos rancheros which he likes. The guacomole and chips were yummy too. I wasn't blown away but we were satisfied. Service was attentive, prices were good. Since it's in the neighborhood, I'll probably be back at some point.
I love this place. The food is delicious and very, very fresh!
My favorites are the made to order guacamole and the roasted pork & pineapple tacos... yum! The atmosphere is great for dinner with friends, a date or just about anything.
Prices are moderate - you can have an inexpensive meal if you choose or live big and spend a lot - Either way you will be satiated and happy!
This is a 3.5 but I decided to round up.
I've eaten here twice and felt good about it both times. The first time I went with my girlfriend and we got the roasted chicken with a side of beans and rice, tortillas etc. The chicken was delicious, juicy and flavorful. The second time I went I got a roasted pork burrito. The pork was succulent, but the burrito was a little small. Luckily I wasn't that hungry. I'll go again if I'm passing by.
I enjoyed the brunch we had here where I tried the Breakfast Burrito and some of the fresh guac. The free chips & salsa were very tasty and I loved my burrito, but the guac could have used a bit of salt. Most brunch choices are only $6-7.50 which is pretty darn affordable. It's kinda small inside though, so don't expect to bring more than a group of 4 to be seated comfortably.
My beef with this place is not only do they not take Amex, THEY USE AN AMEX-BRANDED CHECK FOLDER. Seriously?! You're too cheap to take Amex, but you'll use the free stuff Amex gave you? Please, you should be ashamed.
Last night was the second time my friends and I headed to Park Slope to go to Bogota, but remembered Los Pollitos was right across the street. What luck!
First off, the staff is very welcoming and friendly. This is huge for me- the majority of what I'm looking for in a good restaurant. We sat outside and got regular margaritas and a pitcher of the mango- all frozen, delicious and quite strong. The enchiladas were good, the queso fundido con chorizo appetizer is AMAZING. Very rich. This is a good place to have a late dinner and start the night. Outdoor seating, good service, good food and frozen margaritas. Do you really want more?
One small gripe: why no black bean soup?
I went here and had a decent meal. They have a number of vegetarian options and the fresh made guacamole is impressive. I normally avoid Los Pollitos III in my neighborhood because I feel like it would be cheating on Castro's, the less polished yet tasty authentic cheaper Mexican place down the block. Anyhow, my enchiladas were ok, the spinach inside was a little stringy, the tomatillo sauce a little too sweet, the rice a little too gloppy, but in the end it was fine. I know that I'm going veg at a place that mainly serves non veg food, so my opinion is limited.
I have to admit that once I did cheat on Castro's (with my mom no less!) and had the same enchiladas, Los Pollitos III did it waaayyy better. But I did split a pitcher of margaritas, so everything was pretty good then.
Decent Mexican food, nothing special. I loved that they had mole chicken enchiladas because I am obsessed with mole sauce and I don't see it on Mexican menus incredibly often. It was okaaaaay, not great, but maybe that's just because I'm comparing it to the mole I got hooked on in Los Angeles, obviously a much better city for Mexican food than NYC. Very good rice, though.
Also, the guac - I appreciated that they make it fresh for you, but this stuff was way too bland! It needed more salt or more lime or something, but it was definitely disappointing. The salsa on the other hand is awesome. We totally forgot about the guacamole and kept asking for refills of this salsa.
I just got some quick food as takeout, but I really don't know how I feel about this place. I ordered a quesadilla, and wound up with a semihard taco on its side, covered in lettuce and white stuff. I brought it back in and asked for a quesadilla, and they told me that I was holding one.
The price was reasonable, and the food was alright, I guess. Their denial of quesa-failure left a strange taste in my mouth, though.
YUM. When I got accepted into grad school, my roommate said, "Let's celebrate... with cheap Mexican!"
I was not disappointed! We enjoyed cold beer, fresh, tasty, inexpensive Mexican fare. While it was nothing too fancy, there was an extensive menu with something for everyone. They have tables outdoors for the warm weather. Good stuff! I'll definitely be back!
Tip: If you're slick, you can illegally park in the Key Foods parking lot. ;-)
This place is super gross! The chips were stale, the salsa tasted like spoiled water, and the two entrees I tried were about as edible as an old newspaper. Avoid this disaster of a restaurant.
I came here for Brunch minus the drinks. I had the coffee which was good...strong and I had the tamale. Oh I was disappointed by that damn tamale. It was dry and not like I remember having in San Diego, but my friend had the 1/2 chicken at 4.50 which is a real bargain. He loved it!! The guacamole was ok, served with homemade chips. They have a cute garden area in the back and also do outdoor dining. The service was decent and the prices are reasonable, but honestly if I wasn't in the neighborhood I wouldn't make the effort to come back.
They have a larger restaurant Los Polllitos (original) on 4th Ave in Sunset Park...its huge but no outdoor dining and I haven't tried the food so I can say its better, worse or same.
You make the choice to say Si or No to Los Pollitos!
They do take credit cards...plus.
Take it from a real tortilla and beans scarfing Mexican this place is pretty damn good and authentic. I had the chicken enchiladas in a rich mol sauce which is not a sauce i normally see at restaurants that have to cater to a variety of people who may not be familiar beyond the normal cheese and sour cream mish mash.
The guacamole was super fresh and the chips were just right. Beware though if you get a dish and the guac you're gonna be really full even sharing between two or three people.
Pretty disappointed. I had the 'pumpkin flower' sope (sounded interesting) and pozole soup. The soup was good enough, nothing special, but the sope was disgusting. The pumpkin flowers were way too salty, I have no idea why, maybe they are kept in some salty brine or something.
My friend got shrimp and fish tacos, and they messed up the order for the fish and gave her vegetarian instead. The service was pretty bad, we had to flag down the waiter to get water, the check. Oh and their credit machine was broken.
Maybe I am the exception but I very much enjoyed my experience here. I went with two other people for drinks and dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The margaritas were strong and yummy and the guacamole was fresh and plentiful. Excellent salsa as well.
I ordered the chicken enchiladas with red sauce and it was quite good. Nice sized portions with good spice. Fairly priced, nice atmosphere and a great way to spend the night in a good neighborhood.
YUCK! Was in the mood for Mexi-brunch, but this place killed that mood.
My eggs were so overcooked that they were almost unrecognizable. Don't order the breakfast quesadilla - they don't know how to make it.
They also didn't have mimosas avail (on the menu), so I didn't even have something tasty to wash it down with. You can't burn a mimosa, right?
Anyway, don't eat here. It didn't have any redeeming qualities and I'm fairly sure there's something in the neighborhood worth eating. I could say more negative things about it, but it's not even worth the energy.
I have been to Los Pollitos II a number of times over the past 4 years.
Dinner there is ok... the outdoor seating is fun. But the best feature is the daily brunch - excellent, flavorful, very well priced.
The morning burrito is just the right size.... the coffee (Colombian +a hint of cinnamon) keeps resonating with you after the meal.
If you find some of their food not spicy enough for you - ask for the in-house red-hot salsa/ sauce.
Brunch / lunch for two + 2 coffees = 17 (not including tip)
Little disclaimer: I have never eaten at this restaurant.
However, I have ordered delivery, and I have to say, you can't beat it. For $6, you can get a ginormous chicken burrito (no delivery minimum! please don't abuse, I am addicted to $6 delivered burritos). When I'm feeling saucy, I'll order up some of their home-made lemonade. This stuff is incredible, especially when introduced to little Jack on a hot summer afternoon.
Note: if the deliciousness of the chicken burrito is somehow not satisfying in its own right, please feel free to add some Rooster sauz (http://en.wikipedia.or...). This will complete you.
I've lived in the neighborhood for over 3 years now, and this is one restaurant that has stayed put, despite all the turnover we've seen around it. Yet the only times I've been here are for brunch, and only recently. I'm from SF, so I'm a little skeptical of the Mexican food I've found out here, but I kinda like Los Pollitos. The salsa is nice and spicy, chips are thick and crunchy, not overly greasy, and the food is pretty good. I have a soft spot for chillaquilles, and they make a pretty good verde version, served with tasty rice and black beans. My friend had the veggie enchiladas and gobbled them up. My neighbor is a fan of their rotisserie chicken. The margaritas are pretty good, definitely strong, so watch out!
Most people know you can't get great Mexican food here in NY, at least not what you're used to if you grew up in CA, but I think Los Pollitos is a good option. It won't satisfy the craving I have for my favorites in The Mission, but until my next trip home, Los Pollitos it is!
Did not find it as great as the reviews say it is.
I eat a lot of mexican and this seems homemade but kind of sloppy.
On the plus side--Margaritas and Guac were very tasty.
Had brunch here and it just hit the spot. The chips and salsa kept coming. Very attentive staff. Great place for a casual weekend brunch. Definitely one of the better places in the neighborhood for such a meal.
Chips and salsa weren't free for my boyfriend and I. They must have done away with that. They were decent, but unfortunately it was the only decent thing on the menu. I got the vegetarian taco and it said it came with rice, beans, pico de gallo and sour cream. I asked for them with no sour cream. All good, right? Wrong. It came with all this white cheese on it, which was annoying because had the menu stated it came with cheese, I would have asked for no cheese as well.
I have yet to find Los Pollitos I, but I beleive II to be superior to III.
Bring friends, add ceviche and garlic octopus appetizers. Mmmm.. Dilute with Maragarita pitcher. Good times
The rest of the fare is pretty standard mexican and generally good. Black bean soup is mediocre, but the tostones make up for it. Brunch is a good time to go, and when it's nice out, sitting in the back weird garage section is a good idea.
I can't emphazise the delight of the ceviche or the roast garlic octopus, it incites cravings, that's what keeps me biking back for more.
This is the real deal. Great chicken and simple, tasty sides for a great price. And the atmosphere is easy-going. Also, vegetarian friends who don't mind the sight of chicken can have some great beans and rice, salad and drinks. For take out, we'll buy a whole chicken, salad and rice for under $15 and it feeds 3 to four people. This is not adventurous food, but it tastes good. I've only ordered the chicken (it's the specialty). In the summer, sit outside and get pitchers of either sangria or margaritas. Then the service doesn't seem slow!
I got pretty sick the first time I ate here. Salsa was pretty good, but I can't really say the same for my meal.
I then stupidly decided to eat here a second time, just in case I caught them on an off night the previous time (and because Bogota across the street was closed). Got sick a second time, and their chips were even stale this time around.
Best part of the visit was that I overheard a couple consider coming in to eat in their open air space -- a passer by quickly told them to avoid it at all costs without even stopping his stride.
We-ell, I have to say I wasn't overwhelmed with this place. The guac was great, b/c they make it fresh, but the chips, while homemade, were really stale and painfully crunchy (not a good thing). My brother's pork was dry and underflavored, though the fish dishes my dad and I had were quite good. But overall an uneven experience. And for the price, I think Bogata Bistro is a bit better, and it's right across the street. But I think I'll have to come back and try the chicken...
The guacomole is sooo good. The carne & burritos are great, service is spotty but they do try. Afternoon's are better than nighttime & the drinks are great.
Decent food but they don't have it all together for lunch. You don't know whether to stand at the counter to order or to go sit down. I give them only two stars because we had to pay for chips and they charged us over 50 cents extra on every meal. If prices are higher, they should update their menus.
I usually eat at Bogata, across the street, or Taquaria on 7th avenue, and decided to try this Los Pollitos II.
I ordered a couple of soft tacos and an Iced Tea. The Al Pastor, pork/pineapple taco was tasty, but the fish taco was buried in guacamole, onions & salsa. The fish tasted off & I didn't finish it. I was there when it was slow, in mid-afternoon, & I was never asked how my meal was. No big deal.
My iced tea was brought to me in a small wine glass packed with ice (about 3 ounces of tea). I was on a bicycle and was very thirsty & I was hoping for a pint sized glass like they serve at similar places nearby. I ordered a re-fill and they charged me for it.
The restroom was filthy & when I mentioned the small size of the iced tea, I got a shrug.
I'll go to Taquaria on 7th Ave from now on for fresh Mex & decent sized beverages.
Hello, delicious. Really cute little mex place with very reasonable prices. Nice waitstaff, yummy food. Some delectable Margaritas. Oh, yes. Those were good. I will definitely return.
I love the food here. The fresh guacamole is fantastic, and Sangria is a must have. It's affordable, and the service is friendly.
Just not that good. I've come here a couple of times always hoping for some yummy food, but I always get boring bland flavorless food. The chips are stale, the huevos rancheros have no spice, and while everyone is nice there, the atmosphere is kind of lethargic and just makes me want to leave. It's not a bad deal, but I agree for Tal....you're better off going across the street to Bogota or taking the 6 train to East Harlem.
I love coming here. It's not the most amazing food but it's always good and I've always had good fast service too. My favorite thing to order is the shrimp sope. Rice and beans are always good too. Some things can be on the dry side but mostly everything I've had has been really good. I definitely recommend coming here if you're in the neighborhood.
my go to for sitting outside with a drink and a snack
i have been here about six times! so i like it a lot, the menu is more imaginative than your average mexican restaurant but it is overall average. nice efficient service
Better than Castro's no doubt, plus their outside seating on Myrtle is dope. One time I saw this guy get bit by this other guy's dog and completely lose his shit during margarita happy hour. awesome!
