It's been a long while, but the quality and authenticity of Los Jarritos keeps this family run restaurant at the top of my Mexican meal fave places.
They have it all. Mole, Chile Colorado, Verde, Flautas... Just have a look at the menu, it's amazing!
Inside the place is like a Mexican Diner, with Chrome Laminate Tables and hardwood flooring. At the back wall, a museum quality selection of Mexican art adorns shelving along with black and white photos of Frida Khalo. Family sized tables in the back, smaller tables in the front and some outdoor seating is available as well.
This was the perfect stop before heading to Garfield Square for the Dia De Lost Muertos festival, one of my favorite S.F. events!
Lovin' life, honoring the dead.

One plane ride, 4 mojitos, 2 glasses of wine, 2 boat rides, 1 half hour walk, 1 trans-atlantic flight and I end up here...

I was so hungry I wanted to rub my face in the plate to get the food in me faster. It didn't work but I thought it was a good idea at the time. What made me laugh even more the next day was that when we asked for Magaritas (the drinks not the pizza!) they were out - I totally think that had nothing to do with the drunken state we were in already.

Anyway... apparently this was my first experience of Mexican food because if you haven't heard, us Londoners can't make a burrito for shit. As well as the staff being totally friendly and awesome they were a lot like the food, warm and welcoming. I  have to say this was super duper tasty and the drunken urge to call everyone I knew from my UK phone subsided.

Thank you thank you thank you... what a wonderful dinner. Although I will still call it a Jal-low-pea-no pepper - sorry, I'm British.

Every thing that happens to you happens for a reason.  And you can extract wisdom from every thing that happens to you, too.  There is a lesson to be learned, if only we can open ourselves up to it.  Lately, I've been trying to extract the wisdom that the universe intends for me to gain from a few challenges that have been thrown my way.  And while I haven't figured it out quite yet, I will.

One of the unfortunate side effects of my extremely hectic work life recently (and by recently, I pretty much mean calendar year 2009) is that it has cut heavily into my time with Wifey.  As she and I approach 15 years of couplehood, I find that, many times, the things that ail me can be solved simply by spending some quality time with the woman I love.

We did not leave to go to Los Jarritos on Tuesday.  But that is where we ended up, and I can only assume that was as it was supposed to be.  Los Jarritos has completely changed their menu since the last time we were here, and the food was excellent.  At $18, the pitcher of sangria is enough to get two people almost bulletproof, so it was a good thing we lived nearby.  (But, seriously, a glass of sangria is $5, and there are perhaps 6 glasses in a pitcher, so do the math.)

The service was also excellent, in the way that local, small, inexpensive restaurant service often is: the guy didn't hover, but I could catch his eye from across the room any time I needed anything.  The whole meal was maybe $50 with tip.  We'll definitely spend more time at this neighborhood spot.  As soon as I can figure out what I'm supposed to figure out.

My wife and I were craving Mexican Breakfast before leaving to the airport and flying back to San Diego. I searched Mexican Breakfast in the Mission on Yelp. Los Jarritos happened to be the closest place to my sister in laws house, which we were visiting. She only lives two blocks away, Perfect. We decided to go to Los Jarritos based on the number of reviews, and the good ratings this restaurant has received.

I ordered the Chilaquiles Remo, which are basically Sauteed Chicken Chilaquiles with sour cream. You get a choice of Green or Red Salsa on the Chilaquiles. They also came with Flour Tortillas hechas a mano (Hand Made). You can get either flour or corn, You can see the old lady making them in the kitchen. Let me tell you these tortillas were excellent, thick, fluffy, not hard. Some of the best I've had. The plate also came with frijoles refritos (refried pinto beans) and Mexican rice.

My wife ordered the regular Chilaquiles with the red salsa. We both agreed that the Chilaquiles were very good. We had also noticed that they serve great Menudo, Caldo de Res, Huevos Divorciados (Divorced Eggs with Red and Green salsa, and Pork).

Los Jarritos seemed to be very popular. There were lots of people there on our visit. My sister in law was working when we went to Los Jarritos for breakfast. She mentioned she had never been there, We were so surprised she had not been to this nice establishment right under her nose.

Sista, If you want some great Homestyle Cooking. I really think you should go eat at Los Jarritos, Soon, It's that good. After all It's the closest place to your house.

Sooo... yeah.

We got drunk, we walked far (over 3 miles), we loved Los Jarritos.

I don't know whose great decision it was to walk all the way to the Mission for burritos, but I do know that it was made while actually inside a Mexican joint in the Tenderloin. Not one to argue, we set out on our incredible journey throughout the streets of San Francisco, taking many wrong turns and ill-fated cab rides along the way. Finally, like a shining beacon of cheese-and-bean hope, Los Jarritos was there.

We plunked in to some seats and were immediately well loved by the servers. It may have been our antics, it may have been that someone slipped that we worked for Yelp, but I honestly fell in love with our servers that night (yes, there were several). I ordered up some tostadas that were righteous and perfectly proportioned. Everyone else's food looked equally tasty and immensely huge. I don't think a single member of our group managed to do more than 50%, but again, that was likely due to the large amount of alcohol consumption that had occurred earlier in the evening.

But yes, what I do remember is our totally delightful and lovely servers in addition to some pretty incredible food. I'll be back to sample the chilaquiles, hopefully a good bit more aware this time around.

My boss first took me to this restaurant for lunch several years ago; it was great authentic food. Since that time, I have taken many friends and today, I took my sister. we both had Chile Rellenos because I refused to share mine; it is my favorite dish and I couldn't bare not to eat it all myself. My sister commented that the batter was so light and fluffy on the poblano chilie.  It was so tasty and cooked to perfection.
The service is also friendly and attentive; the prices are reasonable- such a great deal.

Making poor decisions is a symptom of inebriation. Then, allowing drunk Londoners to lead the charge in selecting and then finding a Mexican restaurant at what feels like 4am (really, it was maybe 10pm), is further proof that maybe you belong in a cab or better yet, your hotel room.

Nevertheless, three Londoners, one Atlantan, and this Philadelphian hit the San Francisco streets in search of Los Jarritos. What we thought would be a short walk from our hotel turned into an unforgiving trek across the entire city, and by the time we arrived, I swore we were in Oakland.

What I feared would be a mediocre (at best) experience actually turned out to be well worth the sore feet. I can't remember what we ate, (refer to the first line of this review) but I know we scarfed down each and every dish. One Londoner even asked for her order while miming with her boobs. If you'd like to replicate said move, affix one hand to each boob, then squeeze them together/apart as if they were a mouth moving with each word. Effective tactic is all I can say. Oh and they don't serve margaritas...or maybe that's just what they told us.

Delicious, fresh and vegetarian friendly.

The service at Los Jarritos was excellent. The staff managed to perform that rare feat of being extremely attentive while simultaneously staying out of our way when we didn't need them. Kudos.

The food, while not superb is delicious and caters to both meat eaters and non-meat eaters with equal enthusiasm. The quesadilla we ordered was tasty, but remarkably oily, while the nopales salad was straight out of a can. The salsa and gaucamole were superb, as were the crispy chips. I will definitely be back.

I have been told many times that London does not have good Mexican food. Well, on my first endeavour to a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco my preparation was to get completely blatooed, with my fellow ambassadors. This is maybe not the best thing to do when one wishes to pass a critical eye over dining experience.

We seated ourselves after an excessive walk and short cab ride and were quickly told Margaritas were not available... Hmmm!

I ordered a pork burrito and a huge glass of Sangria. Although a little on the tipsy side I remember enjoying the Sangria immensely. The burrito was clearly good because when I awoke in the morning, half of aforementioned burrito was neatly packaged in a plastic container next to my head on the pillow. Having clearly gone to the next stage with my attractive Mexican sandwich the night before, I stripped her and went down on the saucy devil. It tasted good. It made me happy.

The guys at Los Jarritos looked after us and I'd certainly go back for the great food and sublime Sangria.

Had a very delicious meal here with my friend who suggested it. We were one of two groups of people when we arrived and soon after the dinner crowd rolled in. The service was good. I have such a hard time at Mexican restaurants because there is usually onions on pretty much everything, so I asked for my usual... no onions... got onions back, but when I pointed this out to the server, she was very kind about it and sent it right back. I got a fresh plate sans onions. I ordered what I think was called the Linda Special. It was grilled chicken with nopales (which I had never had) and other veggies. They have black beans avail, which is always a plus in my book since I am not a fan of the refried bean... I know... blasphemy to some of you, but hey... if it is the only option avail... I will eat 'em. The plate comes with a salad (nice and green), Mexican rice, and beans. There are also tortillas which were fabulous! They are made on site and are very good. I think they are among the best I have had at a restaurant in SF.

I would like to come in and try other dishes here. The food was very very good. Next time I may try something to drink made there, I just had water this time. The portions are also really good. I took a third of mine home (lunch today!).

Two thumbs up!

Mmm Delicious. I'm getting hungry just thinking about Los Jarritos. Everything is amazing here. I love the Pozole and Milanese de Pollo! If you want a nice Mexican restaurant with sit down service you will be hard pressed to find a better restaurant. The staff here are amazingly friendly and will likely remember you if you when you come in again.  The staff here seem truly happy like they are having fun bringing food to the family table on a holiday.

This is a short review for something that probably deserves many more words...

If you eat at Los Jarritos, you will find some or all of the above:

Extremely friendly, knowledgeable and informative staff.

Great prices.

Incredibly good food, including fresh made tortilla chips and DELICIOUS fresh made corn tortillas.

Probably the BEST value in San Francisco for Sangrias. Order a pitcher and then watch your jaw drop when a gigantic pitcher and 2 (pre-filled) gargantuan, chilled glass goblets are delivered to you. Yesterday was a warm day, and the girlfriend and I sat outside and wanted a refreshing Sangria or two... we had no idea we'd be leaving, full, happy, and incredibly buzzed. Delicious.

Kudos to Los Jarritos!

Let me begin by saying that the service here is fantastic!

Depending on the day and time, you may have trouble parking.

Nonetheless, I love the chicken specials; I highly recommend them. My two favorites are the Pollo en Mole -- which is chicken in mole sauce -- and Milanesa de Pollo -- which is a fried chicken breast with guacamole and pico de gallo. The chicken meals include corn tortillas, rice, and beans.

Chicken prices range from about $11 to $15.

I have yet to try anything but their chicken.

Also, chips and salsa are included.

I'm pretty picky with my Mexican food, and therefore, I am a harsh critic. Few places live up to my expectations (which are generally high). So please, take my review with that in mind.

We went here with a group of friends on a Thursday around 8:30pm. Parking was fairly easy and it was pretty empty. Not the best sign, but it was late on a Thursday. We immediately ordered a couple pitchers of sangria. I didn't partake as per usual (early morning the next day), but I had a couple sips and it was good and fruity. Each pitcher was $18.

The food was good, along the lines of adequate, but nothing that stood out. I ordered the combo plate ($10.95) with a chicken enchilada and a carne asada tostada. The tostada was the better of the two - nice crunchy tortilla piled with delicious meat and lettuce, salsa, tomato slice and other tasty things I can't remember. The chicken enchilada was good, but unmemorable. On the side were equally unmemorable and bland beans and rice. Chips and salsa were good. Decently spicy salsa and fresh, seemingly homemade chips. Despite my misgivings, I finished my entire plate - so that says something!!

Service was great. The waitress was funny and most importantly promptly took our orders and brought us water, drinks and refills. The highlight of the evening was that as our pitchers of sangria were brought to us, the waitress mentioned that we shouldn't drink on empty stomachs and then brought us a free plate of quesadillas!! This was awesome and I tip my hat to the thoughtful waitress (maybe manager?).

Overall, a good place that is worth a try. Not my favorite Mexican food, but I certainly wouldn't avoid it.

I'm on this quest to find the perfect batch of chilaquiles in the city, since I can't go home whenever I want and have my dad make em for me.

Los Jarritos was decent, with very large portions and friendly staff. The restaurant itself is large and spacious, plus they serve Mexican Coke. The Chilaquiles Remo was relatively spicey and had good flavor, but the strips of tortilla were more soggy than crispy. They use regular restaurant chips instead of taking corn tortillas and cutting them into strips, which most restaurants seem to do. A good selection of Mexican food offerings though, so overall would be a great stop for other dishes later on!

A friend of mine is a big fan of this place so whenever I'm in San Francisco we grab a bite here. The dishes are all large and very generous. Last time I was here I ordered a three-item combo (I was hungover and thought I could eat all of it). Turns out the three-item combo is more for the Incredible Hulk than a hungry girl.

As far as I can remember, I've always liked the food I've ordered. I really like the chips and salsa too - the chips are nice and thick and the salsa is a good consistency with a good spicy kick. The tortillas are made in-house and you can really taste the difference. They're awesome.

A good choice for sit-down Mexican.

I'm upgrading Los Jarritos to 5 stars after dining here several more times. The food continues to be amazing and I can't recall why I thought the service was only mediocre in my last review. All recent visits have had friendly, prompt servers.

The Especiales served 8-4pm are excellent and much cheaper than the normal plates.

Love this place; its not your typical SF taqueria so don't come here with your buddies to order your typical burrito fare. This place deals more with Mexican comfort food. The beef soup is always something I pick up when I'm dealing with a cold, and is unbelievably good. You can tell from the flavors that its something they've been slow cooking for days on end probably. When I'm feeling less sick I love ordering a tasty michelada in a frosty mug (nice touch). The menudo and the birria on the weekends are excellent too. They also have an excellent breakfast menu. The only complaint I could possibly come up with for this place is that the tortilla chips are usually kind of stale, but the portions for the meals here are so big that you'd have to be completely petty to not forgive this.

Definitely a must check out place for when you're looking for an aspect of Mexican cuisine that frequently gets overlooked in SF.

My mommys baby best friend from all the way back from Kindergarten was in town last night. (You will have to read my previous reviews to figure this one out). Coming from the sticks in Mendocino County where quality Mexican food restaurants are scarce he was desperate for anything other than Taco Bell.

Los Jarritos has been one of my personal favorite haunts in the Mission for the last 10 years. Sadly I don't get make it here much, but when I do I try and take full advantage and stuff myself with their freshly made corn tortillas. I tend to migrate towards the same menu items time and time out. The carnitas, huevos con chorizo and the chile relleno. I usually alternate between these three and never decide until the very last minute what exactly I am going to feast on. However last night I made a commitment to myself that I would try something different.

What to get what to get what to get what to get???????

I was torn between the carne asada and the mole con pollo. I am a mole fan and have been on a red meat roll for the past week and figured my arteries have earned a night off. Last nights mole was rojo and am much more of a mole negro fan. It was decent, but can't say it was my favorite. My wife and friend thought it was pretty decent. But in the end I only had a few bites and just grabbed a few carnitas off my wife's plate.

With this being said, Los Jarritos is still a special restaurant that continues to serve up some of the best and authentic Mexican dishes in the City.

I used to like Los Jarritos for their Chilequiles in the 90's when my boyfriend lived down the street. I went this last Sunday, and I tried the Chicharrones and Eggs. My new boyfriend had the Huevos Rancheros. Both of us got food poisoning :( It was sad. The beans and rice were not good either. They were dry and yucky. I will not be going to Los Jarritos again. It's sad, because it's a cute place. OH well.

Got a hankering for barbecued goat? Who doesn't? So plan on a trip to Los Jarritos any Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

The birria comes "wet" or "dry" -- with sauce or without.

The homemade corn tortillas are extra good. And we especially like the atmosphere...a friendly, family-place feel.

It's not an order-at-the-counter taqueria -- it's a sit-down place, like a Mexican diner -- lots of breakfast choices as well as the usual lunch and dinner options. . And yes, the accordion music might well be coming from the guy standing beside you, playing the accordion.

Meh?  Yes.
Not that great homies.  Seriously.
What the hell is with all the hype?  I have been wanting to come to this place FOREVER now because of the reviews, but it wasn't that great.
Maybe I ordered the wrong things.
I got the three item combination plate with the beef enchiladas, chicken flautas, and the chile rellano.
I'm sure it would have been tasty if it wasn't for the mound of salad on top.  Seriously.  It was a ton of unnecessary greens.
The flauta was decent.  The enchiladas were super basic and sloppily plated.  The chile rellano wasn't flavorful.
HOWEVER, the most UNFORGIVABLE part of the whole meal was the goddamn chips and salsa?
STALE STALE STALE STALE.

wtf?
I would come back here to try the mole but that's pretty much it.

Probably my favorite sit-down mexican restaurant. (Let me repeat: sit-down! This is NOT a taqueria!)
Los Jarritos is owned and run by one of the nicest families ever. The food is amazing, and they serve breakfast all day!!

The pozole is the best I have ever had. My family and our family friends will order large pots of it for parties (which means a lot since we're all Mexican and capable cooks-- well ok not me, but my family and our friends are), and it continues to get better each day you leave it stewing.

The  huevos divorciados, chilaquiles, and mole are among my favorite dishes.

Jukebox has a great selection of latin music, and it's not uncommon for a mariachi to come in a play a song or few regardless of what time of day I'm in here.

My Mexican immigrant grandfather makes sure we eat here at least once every time he comes to town. Do you need any more convincing than that?

OVERALL
Liked it.  Wasn't fired up about coming back.

CHILE RELLENO
It was good.  Liked that it had a lot of sauce.  Wasn't very hearty though and wasn't super flavorful.  I wouldn't order it again, but I'd eat it if it was in front of me.

SOPES DE CARNITAS
Carnitas was fine.  Not super tasty, but well made (not dry).  It was odd having some fancy leaves all over the top, and not much cheese.  The corn was pretty thin for my liking.

TORTILLAS
Loved 'em.  Tasted like home-made to me!  Comes with two, which is all I needed.

CHIPS Y SALSA
Good!  Chips were cold (bummer) and some were very home-made style and others seemed from a bag.  ???  Not sure about all this, but I liked most of the chips and the salsa was really good (not too thick, not too watery, and just spicy enough).  If the chips were warm / fresh, would have been great.

RICE Y BEANS
They were well made.  Beans seemed like they had been waiting for me to show up for sometime.  Still good though.

ATMO
Family style Mexican in the mission!

STAFF
Very nice.

PRICE
I'm not sure.  I ordered a 9 dollar meal (2 item combo) but was charged 13... I thought about bringing this up but just didn't have the bandwidth to deal with it.  Anyway, price seemed fine.

One of my favorite Mexican places in SF. A family run place. Diverse crowd. The Mole chicken enchiladas are savory and just a tad sweet, and the Chile verde with a fried egg for breakfast is moist, savory, and spicy. I've also had the Biria (goat stew), Menudo, Huevos Rancheros, and others.

Came by here after stopping by Limón Rotisserie and being informed that it would be a one-hour wait... holy crap!  When you're starving at 8PM and can't eat until 9PM, that's a dangerous thing.  Anyhow, my buddy and I walked a couple blocks over to Los Jarritos for a bite to eat.  The place wasn't too crowded, but there was a friendly vibe here.

I ordered up the Vicente's special and my buddy had the Chile Verde... both dishes were done well, but there was nothing out of this world about this place.  They have a decent selection of Mexican beers by the bottle... I love Negra Modelo and they give you nice and frosty mugs.  Sweet!  It's the little things that make a place nicer... overall, 3.5... half a star for frosted mugs.  :-D

So, if you don't want to wait in a ridiculous line at Limón Rotisserie, come on by to Los Jarritos.  I'll have to try the sangria next time.

Sit down, family style Mexican restaurant like you find in LA. Lots of authentic dishes. Excellent pork dishes, awesome enchiladas, great chips and salsa. I love their shrimp and octopus cocktails. Only con, no liquor and their main course salad dishes aren't very good. (Therefore, avoid the salad).

The staff is really nice, really friendly, great breakfast.

Got the mole enchiladas again, for sample number 2.  No greasy oil slick this time!  The mole sauce (and I got some extra on the side) was dark, rich, flavorful, with a nice bit of kick to it.
The enchiladas, on the other hand, were a bit on the bland side.
One of my friends got the flautas, which were also surprisingly bland tasting.
Our third got the chile verde pork, however, which packed some serious tasty.  Serious.  He was the big winner.

He also tried the sangria, which comes in an enormous chilled glass better described as a goblet.  Think middle-ages when I say goblet.  This thing was huge.  He declared it to be "yummy," but I thought it mostly tasted like cheap wine.

Went there yesterday for breakfast.

It's open, airy and clean.
I ordered coffee and in a few minutes , I was brought out the coffee and some corn chips and salsa, both very good.
I ordered the nopales con huevos; it was ready in ten minutes.
The rice looked dry and the refried black beans did not look appetizing.
Both tasted as if made a while ago. The nopales was ok, however the sliced onions had def. seen better days and must have been sitting in the refrigerator a couple days- they looked dry and tasted that way. They did throw some fresh spring lettuce on the beans. And the two hot corn tortillas were ok.
Disappointing to say the least, I arrived at 930am, and was promptly seated. Heck, I was the first customer (they open at 8am)

The person who sat me down was courteous and promptly brought out the requisite black coffee which was good.

I wanted to like this place, I had personally heard of the home made mexican food at Jarritos on Van Ness/20th.

This is an alright place to have a sit down Mexican lunch. My office all came here on a friday for a staff lunch meeting. The owners brought out complimentary quesidillas for all of us. That made us feel very welcomed!

In the men's room there are some interesting paintings of latin american revolutionaries. check it out if you get a chance.

having moved to san francisco from east los angeles five years ago, i've been searching for a mexican restaurant that i can really call a restaurant, and really call mexican, in this city for quite sometime.

los jarritos: you have so much potential, but you're not quite it.

this place resides right on the border between what an authentic home-style mexican restaurant should be, and what a classic yummy taqueria is.

they serve micheladas, which is hard to by so far north, and in my opinion the best way to drink a modelo.

the menu is decent, but pretty basic. the chips were stale and not very good. the salsa kept me eating them anyway, though.

i love the salad served on top of the plate
.
the service was friendly, there just wasn't enough of it.

i'm going to go back -- i still need to try the mole, and the breakfast.

but so far i still seem to be searching....

Remember that time when you found a clean, pleasant sit-down Mexican place in the Mission with friendly servers and delicious food? Me neither. Thank god Los Jarritos finally just came into my life. All I can say of true importance is that they have this potato filling stuff that you can get in your flautas. I am a serious meat-eater but on my first trip there I was in the mood for something lighter. Having that presence of mind introduced me to the most flavorful, smooth, wonderful filling in the world. I get it in my enchiladas now. Ask for it. You will not be disappointed. Potato filling.

Delicious & authentic Mexican food at an affordable price. The menu is plenty diverse with a number of vegetarian dishes & a number of dishes that can be veganized if you bat your lashes.
