Hands down the best tamales you will ever eat.  Super moist.  I really liked the pork ones.  Can't seem to get the ladies to give me the recipe though.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE tamales!!! They are my favorite Mexican staple from as far back as I remember. You may wonder...what does an Asian girl from SF know about tamales....well, I don't know how to make them perfectly, nor do I have a friend with a Mexican grandmother who used to make them. But after sampling a variety of tamales these are by far the best I have ever tasted.

Los Hernandez only sells tamales with a few side items.  You know a place a good when they sell pretty much only one thing and have stayed open for 20 years or so.  Had the pork tamales and they were sublime, soft masa, juicy and tender pork...oh so yummy. They are SO good that when my coworker goes down to visit his family I make a special order for him to bring me back some frozen ones. Yes they sell frozen ones and they ship if you have such the hankering.

If you love tamales and are in the area or feel the need for a long drive...come here NOW!

    ***The Variables***
    DISTANCE:  150 miles
    TIME:  3hrs
    THE PRIZE:  6 Dozen Tamales
    PRICETAG:  "Priceless"....well, actually---$125

....and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Sometimes you just wake up a little nuts.  Maybe your eye twinges a little.  Perhaps that ever-hidden facial tick makes an appearance.  Or sometimes you just wake up with a nasty & crazy notion in your noggin.  The latter occupied me.

I had heard legends of tamales upriver in Yakima, and not just any tamales:  Asparagus Tamales!  Now, I'm all down for tamales, and I LOVE all of Washington's bounty:

    *  Our cherries can take out any other region's cherries in the octagon
    *  Our Walla Walla Sweet Onions can cure whatever ails ya.
    *  Our Asparagus are heavenly sprouts of green tastiness which I covet when out of season

When tamales & asparagus merge for a loving union (with pepper jack cheese tagging along to spice things up), I have to be involved; and being a little "nuts" was ok by me.

It's serious when you have to phone in your order.  I called up Los Hernandez, and said, I wanted Asparagus Tamales.  I didn't really have a number in mind, but I eventually talked myself into SIX DOEZN tamales!  Before you call me Jabba The Hut---no, no, no, it wasn't all for me.  I have roommates, and they went for three, I went for two dozen asparagus, and a split dozen of chicken and pork.

I felt like a tamale junkie as I caravanned my load of tamales home in a monster ice chest (which I bought just for this occasion, while I was in "Crackima").  The 70-mile drive home went smoothly and smellingly lovely with tamale scent in the air of my hoopty.  The surrealness of the day took another step to heaven when I had my first tasting of the tamales.  The Asparagus & Pepper Jack Cheese tamales were certainly the hogs of the day--dwarfing their pork & chicken brethren.  They were SOOOO tasty!  The Asparagus was, of course, THE BOMB.  The pepper jack cheese added some well-balanced kick.  These rolled bundles of love were perfection.

The pork & chicken tamales clearly held their own and were tasty.  I can totally live on them for the rest of the year when the asparagus tamales aren't on the menu (the asparagus tamales are roughly made from April - Father's Day, depending on the asparagus harvest).

I became a Facebook Fan of Los Hernandez, and while on there, I learned that they deliver.  So, if you're in Portland, Maine, and you have a hankering for tamales, FedEx is your friend.

I'm a minimalist at heart.  If I could have a home garnished with only the basics I'd be happy.  This is why I'm in love with Los Hernandez.  Their menu is simple (see the photo of their menu):  they only make tamales.  The simplicity of it is so right.

I'm not the best with words, so if you want to visualize what I'm talking about, check out this recently-made piece about Los Hernandez:  http://stayinthegap.co...

Now it's been said that asparagus can alter the fragrance of your pee.  Some hate it, and some love it.  If you want to extend the asparagus-stink of your pee, buy many dozens of the Asparagus tamales (they hold extremely well after being frozen), and defrost them throughout the year to make the asparagus pee last all-year-long!

900 Tamales???  Maybe someday I can do it.

900th review?  Los Hernandez can be my 900th any day!

Ok, my wife & I were driving from Boise to Seattle a couple of weeks ago & since I just got the Yelp app on my smart phone, I decided to see what was around & I found this place rated pretty well.  But asparagus tamales?  I've heard of odd combinations before, but asparagus in tamales?

We talked about it & well, we're somewhat adventurous so we decided to try one.  We only ordered one.  We both tried it & holy cow, that was wonderful!  We ordered about 6 more, got back in the car and continued our trip.

The place was open right up to closing & the gal there said they typically stay open an hour after their posted closing times.  She also said we could call them on our way back & they'd have some frozen for us.  We're talking about nice people here.

The place just looks like a hole in the wall & I would never have stopped there if I hadn't found this place on yelp.  Don't let the looks fool you - if you're within 50 miles of this place, you'd be a nut not to stop by and get some of those.

If you have the craving for fresh, authentic and delicious tamales, then you have to make the trek to Los Hernandez in Union Gap, on the outskirts of Yakima, WA.

I remember my parents taking me here when I was a teenager.  And I can't believe that they are celelbrating thier 20th Anniversary making these delicable tamales.  I just went there on Sunday and the tamales are just as good as they were back then.  What's crazy is that I have started the tradition of taking my family there just as my parents did with me.

I have to say that the Asparagus and Cheese tamales are the best - and the chicken is a close second.  They are by far the best I have EVER had (including the ones I have had in Mexico).  Whenever I see tamales for sale, I have to stop to try one but none has been as good as Mr. Hernandez's..  The asparagus and cheese are only there for a limited time (I think May and June).  We got to the store at 10:45am (they open at 11) and scored the last dozen to take home!  We ate some there too - for breakfast - and the kids loved them too!  And thier little shop is quiant, cute and clean - one word:  AMAZING!

Great authentic tamales that were moist and had a great flavor. The chicken or pork are equally good in my opinion. They also make a delicious fresh salsa which is a little on the spendy side but better than anything you'll find in a grocery store.

I wish they could move to the greater Seattle area! I saw all the great yelp reviews and had to stop by for tamales after a white water rafting trip. They didn't disappoint! They also have great salsa. Sadly, the mythical asparagus tamales I keep reading about were out of season, but the chicken and pork tamales were awesome!! I took home a dozen and they were gone in two days. I should have taken more home, I think they would freeze well.

Thank you fellow yelpers who steered me to this place.  Stopped in on a recent roadtrip.  LOVE the tamales.  All they do is tamales - they are that good, no need to offer anything else.  I wanted to try the asparagus, but they are late this year - not yet in season due to all of the rain we've been having here in the Pac NW.  I've already told my friends - these are the best tamales ever.   If you are anywhere near Yakima - don't miss this place.  If you are far away, call them and they will mail these tamales to you next day air with dry ice.  I'm going to have to order them because they are that good.  Huge fan.  Thank you!!!

Being a student, these tamales were really well priced for the quality of the tamales. I would say these are the best tamales in the whole Valley. The service is always excellent and accommodating. Stay and eat or they will wrap up your tamales to go!

Fantastic and muy autentico!  Don't pass up the salsa and get as much to go as you can, assuming they're not sold out.

We just swung by there on our way back from Walla Walla and were happy to see they were open.  Unfortunately, they did not have any asparagus tamales yet.  We were told starting around April.  So we picked up some chicken and pork ones to take away.  Both were really flavorful and very good even after I reheated them way too long in the microwave.  The owners are super friendly and we look forward to going back and having some asparagus tamales!

A great find. The tamales were excellent as was the accompanying salsa and the proprietor was very nice. If you bring a cooler, you can take a dozen home, unfortunately we were without one. Next time.

AMAZING tamales - best I've found on the west coast! I'm used to the NYC tamales that I could get from the many Latin families that made them in the building we resided in, including the ones my ex's mom made. These were as Spanish authentic as you could get. Los Hernandez was recommended to me by some local Seattles, I frequent Yakima since I was born there and my dad still lives there, so dropping down to Union Gap was no big deal. I pick up a dozen of the chicken and dozen of the pork. They heat up easily (directions provided) and the are sooooooo delish! I took some to a friend at work and now when I go over I pick up even more for her too. The staff is extremely polite, the building is super clean and everything is ready for purchase. I missed the asparagus tamales because we moved, but I the pork and chicken are awesome! Try 'em, you can't go wrong and it's about a buck a tamale! Nummy!

This place is amazing! I wasn't so sure at first about the locally grown asparagus tamales, but they were incredible. The 1/2 dozen pork tamales I brought home didn't even last a week. If you're in the area, this place is a must.

We just tried the Asparagus Tamales today, for the first time. They are fantastic. There is nothing out there like them. You really should call ahead to reserve yours, otherwise they should have chicken or pork available, but the asparagus are only available for a short time in May. The best thing about the tamales is the texture. They aren't wet, or slippery like a lot of tamales you get, are. They are the best! We got 3 dozen to bring back to the West side of Washington State - we should have bought more. The beautiful young lady that runs the place - I think her name is Hermedes, couldn't have been more helpful. She has a sweet personality, and has worked there for 4 years. How lucky they are to have an employee like her that cares so much, and makes everyone glad they came in to the place. We will definitely be back everytime we go to the Yakima area. I am so mad at myself, I forgot all about getting their salsa. I hear it is great too. Darn it!
