For those of you who want Dairy, THIS IS A VEGAN FOOD CART! go somewhere crappy like Muchas Gracias. Seriously. This place is Great!
I don't know anyone who doesn't like this cart. It's always a special treat to come here on a work break, or have that special someone stop at my work with a Fajita Burrito and Ramekins full of their delicious red sauce.
I definitely couldn't eat here several times a week, but it is a wonderful treat every now and again. Plus, the owners are sweet, honest people I would support any day.
This place is amazing. For some reason I've only been once - but seriously - I have never been to or heard of another place like this. Completely vegan yet delicious Mexican food run by real Mexican people. I got the Mulita and my friend got the soyrizo burrito. Usually I think that fake meat stuff doesn't taste very good with Mexican food but the soyrizo was amazing. Great refried beans. The vegan cheeze even tasted good. Authentic real-tasting Mexican comfort food. I am getting hungry just thinking about. Very good deal too. Enough food for two meals for about $5.
Why haven't I been back???
Also, wonderful people working.
Los Gorditos will satisfy any fat cravings you have for comfort food. And then some. I ate here three times in one week and the last time I think my body got pissed and I felt ill afterward. Granted I ordered the enchiladas and upon seeing them face to face in their full greasy glory (photo) I should have known better not to eat it all. The enchilada "sauce" was more like a seperated oil and tomato paste mixture that the enchiladas were swimming in.
Obviously there is a reason why the two guys running the joint have a little more than love handles. You don't come here looking for fresh veggies. You come here because you can't get empanada rellenas or soy curl burritos anywhere else in town. They rely heavily on off-the-shelf products like soyrizo, FYH cheeze, soyrizo, Tofutti sour cream, and the aforementioned soy curls. The refried beans are awesome, please don't anyone tell me how many table spoons of oil are in them. Everything on the menu that I have tried is good, just some will kill you faster than others. The torta and empanadas were both good, but if you don't know anything about real mexican food realize the torta is sandwich (or am I the only idiot here). If you can't handle much oil avoid soyrizo and the enchiladas at all costs. If you don't specify your filling I've found you get the soyrizo by default sometimes. Minus a star for all the grease and no table (WtF?).
¡AY-QUE RICO! Super-delicious, totally vegan taqueria-style food cart with
huge portions, FYH cheeze, soyrizo & friendly staff. We shared the massive burrito and mulita - both were copious portions and amazingly good (esp. The mulita). The hot red salsa was mediocre (really heavy on the canned garlic), but their mild tomatillo (green) salsa was excellent.
Highly recommended.
Incredibly salty, very messy, and an unfortunate lack of dairy options (sorry vegans - when it comes to Mexican food, this is a legit gripe). I've been going here once a week for the past couple months, trying different things almost every time, but I think I've about given up. Which is too bad; they're nice folks, and there aren't many decent lunch options around these parts.
Well, let me first say that I am a HUGE fan of the original Taqueria Los Gorditos at 50th and Division. My boyfriend knowing this mentioned to me that a second "spin-off" cart had opened up at the SW corner of SE 8th Ave. and SE Ankeny St. behind Citybikes.
Being that it's only blocks from the little vegan stip mall, of course it makes sense that this cart is all vegan. And also ALL DELICIOUS. I went for the Regular Burrito with For Your Heart soy cheese, and it was loaded with tasty beans and rice, plus lots of lettuce, tomato, onions, cilantro, and creamy dreamy avocado. However, it was definitely a tough choice to make as their was a lot to choose from. I wanted to add some extra flavor with their spicy red salsa but decided it was WAY too spicy for my wussy-self, so I'm glad I grabbed a thing of tomatillo sauce as well, because it added just the extra little zing to make it the perfect burrito.
Now, I'm not vegan, but I'll eat vegan or vegetarian over meat like 80% of the time! And this place is really close to my office so I definitely plan to go back for lunch and dinner as much as I can. The menu is extensive and inexpensive. Their are four varieties of tacos for under $1.75 or less, and you can add a quarter more for the FYH cheese and Toffuti sour cream. The empanadas rellenas and rolled tacos sound really tasty, but in truth I can't wait to give everything else on the menu a try because it all sounds good. If you love the original Los Gorditos you're definitely in for a treat!
So good! All-vegan and all delicious. Has a handful of things the Gorditos I cart doesn't have, like empenadas, with either soyrizo or tofu (sometimes they only have one or the other), but they've also implimented the latest and greatest in soy technology "soy curls." They have these at Food Fight! vegan grocery too. Soy curls are good, they have sort of the texture of chicken, a lot like seitan for you vegans out there, but without the puffy-skin feeling all that gluten gives you.
I have trouble sometimes at mexican restaurants because mi espanol no es bueno, pero they certainly speak enough english to take my order with perfect accuracy.
I only gave it a four star rating because its a cart, so in portland's sassy-ass weather, there isn't much in the way of comfortable seating-space.
Remember to bring your own container so you don't have to use toxic plastic.
Wow. Gone are the days when I complained that I couldn't find amazing Mexican food north of San Francisco! This cart is Mexi-heaven to me. Never a worry that maybe the beans and rice are "really" veg, and the staff are super sweet. Try the mulita or the soyrizo tacos. You will not be disappointed.
Great vegan Mexican food cart. The torta is delicious, the guys that work there are friendly. Go you will like it.
