20 reviews for Los Cotijas Taco Shop
Fish tacos are delicious.
Lots of salsa, lemon and tomatoes is friggin' awesome.
This was the place to go when I would ditch school.
Much better than the tatter tots they served
at the cafeteria.
I went there tonight, their fish taco is really good.
And owner is very friendly.
It is a really cool place to go for lunch or dinner.
This kills me. I'm telling you--this really hurts. I wanted you to be the place I went to all the time--a staple worth the trip. But you disappointed me. The hype--it is a bunch of hype.
Now now little Cotijas--you are good, and priced quite right. I really loved your horchata. But that FISHY TASTE your second taco left in my mouth had me a little scared. It was not normal--and I eat these things all the time.
Now this is the real killer. The other day I was at Del Taco. And I had their fish taco--as a joke...and............it was better. OUCH!
You are also a real pain in the ass to find. Thanks to the construction going on there be careful first time visitors--they are on the OPPOSITE side of the wing that faces FIRST STREET...not directly ON First. So just know that they are in the BURGER KING SHOPPING CENTER--they really are. Just hunt for them on the reverse side of the wing that faces First and you'll find them.
Worth a try--but best taco in OC? Give me a break. HYPE! Go to Baja Fish in Santa Ana instead.
I had my heart set on Sushi, but it was closed. So we drove across the street to come here. I was a little skeptical until my friend threw in a " they have good reviews on yelp! " then I knew I could trust it. What can I say, you guys were right.
I got a BOMB fish taco with beans, rice and a soda for $5.38. Cash Only, so watch out. It was clean and we got our food fast. Salsa bar was legit.
Attempted to go to Tacos Baja for some fish tacos and ceviche but ALAS, it wasn't meant to be since the store is no more. 8( (Probably because not too many people knew of it.) Luckily, I got my trusty GPS system and was hungry enough to give Los Cotijas another tried. Apparently the one in Tustin was closer than the one in GG so I trek to that location. This one is but tucked away. When I got there, the power was out but the stove was still good to go. Ordered myself some fish tacos and carne asada taco. The carne asada was okay, a bit dry, the ones in GG looked better but maybe it was because the power was out. The fish tacos were like the ones in GG, not bad. They are bigger than your typically street taco. So 2 Los Cotijas tacos filled me up while, I usually order about 3 to 4 street tacos. The staff was nice.
My Rebecca H. recommended this place. I just recently moved, so I decided to come here to eat (man...I've sure been eating out way too much) because I haven't had the chance to make my own food. Anyways, that's besides the point. I ordered the carne asada burrito (which I always order) and a fish taco (since I guess it's their specialty) ... the total came out to $6.66!!!!! THERE'S THE PROOF THE NEW TAX HIKE IS EVIL!!! Let's get back to my review, the burrito was okay. Nothing too special, although I like their chipotle salsa, it has the right amount of smokiness. The fish taco, I felt tasted like it was frozen Gorton's fish, I'm sure I'm wrong, just my opinion...it didn't do it for me. I'd rather have Rubio's. This place is just average.
I asked for a Veggie Burrito even though I didn't see it on the menu. Normally places can kind of make do, whip up a burrito with some lettuce, guac, sour cream, etc and charge me a buck or so more than the bean/cheese. When I tried pulling that shit today the cashier looked at me like I was from outer space!!!
"You want a.... what....?"
"Veggie burrito"
"uhhhh a veg...gie?"
"yeah like vegetarian"
"we have a carne asada burrito with potatoes, i can give you that with no carne asada"
"oh nevermind, just give me the bean and cheese"
And while most people would hate that, I actually found it pretty refreshing to be told "NO" somewhere, you know? I mean, who the hell am I to go in there and tell them what to make me. You wouldn't go into a McDonalds and ask for a plate of spaghetti. Thanks for putting me in my place, anonymous cashier.
So anyways, got a bean&cheese burrito and a medium soda. Total was $4.50. Like I said, it was pretty good, but not the best bean and cheese burrito I've ever had in my life. The pickled carrots had my favorite texture (not too crispy not too soggy) but weren't very spicy. The salsa was pretty good, too. Nothing to really write about, but definitely didn't have any complaints.
If I'm in the area, I'll be coming back. I think I like it slightly better than Alberta's, but Alberta's has way better soda fountains!! My soda tasted funny here. So really it's a toss up.
The corn tortillas are very overpowering. Just like previous reviews, great value for 2.19 a taco. The condiment bar was very inviting, offering the standard pickled carrots, tasty pico de gallo and sauces. I must have went back at least 5 times to refill.
I had the fish tacos and carne asada tacos. The fish tacos were good, but the carne asada wasn't too flavored.
The horchata was one of the best that I've had. No refill signs posted for the horchata.
Service was great. Fast and friendly. They even have a large bill checker to verify that the currency was legit. Protecting their interests.
mmmmm goood and cheap. 3 tacos for $5! I like this local small joint for the occasional mex food craving.
I have been here many times and have always been very happy with the food. It is a strip mall hole in the wall and it is better than you would think a place like this would be.
I've been coming here for years to get my favorite Ensenada-style fish burritos. None of that grilled fish business (sorry Wahoo's) - deep fry that moist flaky filet, slap it in some cabbage and special sauce, wrap it in a tortilla, and send it right to my belly, posthaste. Fish tacos are exactly the same, except a smaller portion and in a moist corn tortilla instead of a chewy flour tortilla. I know it's bad of me, since it's my credo to try all foods, but I've never even considered ordering anything else but a fish burrito here.
-1 star, however, since portions have recently gotten pricier AND smaller.
Wai, this place rocks!! As the novacaine wore off my poor, abused teeth (bi-annual dental cleaning, yick), I realized I was starving to death and stopped by this little hole-in -the-wall. Last week, I was sadly disappointed by a carne asada taco from Jalapenos, so I thought I'd see if I found a better one here.
Best carne asada ever!! It is so flavorful, that it doesn't need to be drowned in salsa (unlike the Jalapenos one, which was pretty bland.) I was extremely happy with the taste and would have a couple more if I wasn't meeting roomie for dinner later today. :)
I did have to dock one star cuz I never carry cash and by a miracle of God, I had a $5 on me. If that hadn't been the case, I might never have tried their awesome asada. :o A little inconvenient.
the BEST fish tacos i've ever had. I haven't tried any fish tacos in Santa Ana (i know, boo on me), but I'm pretty sure the ones at Los Cotijas measure up pretty close. These tacos are huge and the fillets are battered and deep fried. Two of these should be enough (after eating just one, i was almost full).
If you've fallen in love with fish tacos from Wahoo's or some other major chain, then you'll be blown out of the water by the ones at los cotijas.
Situated in an unassuming shopping center, this little gem churns out some of the best fish tacos and at a bargain price. This is the type of place that you would normally walk by without giving it a second thought. Big mistake!
Yes, it's true that it's not eye catching either on the outside or the interior, but its lack of "fashion sense" is more than made up for by producing excellent food.
There are only about 10 tables, and they are situated rather close together so you do get somewhat of a claustrophobic vibe.
The fish tacos ($2.19) are full sized, not the kind that you would find at La Salsa. And the fish takes up most of the tortilla. They are deep fried to a crisp golden brown, crunchy on the inside, delicate and flaky on the inside. The are topped with cabbage, salsa and the obligatory white sauce.
Considering that most restaurants that have fish tacos are similar in price for the "baby tacos", these are a steal.
after knocking back a few cold ones and a few stiffys at Pineapple, my friend and I made our way down to this little corner taco shop. all i got to say is that they make an awesome bean and cheese. add a little guac and you got a meal fit for a king. wash it down with a couple of shots of fresh salsa and some jamaica, and you got your self a little trip to mexico without a kidnapping.
ps. i don't recommend the shots of salsa. they may lead to indigestion later on while downing a few cold ones.
This place is great! I usually get the #21, which is a soft taco, rice and beans, and a drink all for $4.99. I get the chicken soft taco, and it comes with grilled onions and peppers in addition to the usual lettuce, tomatoes, etc. If you eat there, they give you a large squeeze bottle of salsa which is really good (you have to ask for it if you get it to go). They also have a salsa bar with a couple other kinds of salsa plus the carrots, jalapenos, etc.
I'm a Mexican food fanatic and it is really hard to find really good Mex around here. This place is one of the best!
The Fish Tacos here are to die for. The horchata is not too thick but not watery at all. What more can I say about this place? The food is always served quick and I always store extra cases of their hot sauce in my fridge for later.
Good Mexican food at fair prices; their servings are large...
Now named Los Cotijas #2, this hole in the wall was a fluke for us. I was starving and needed grub immediately. Stopped in front of this place and just decided to go in. Ordered huevos con chorizo while the child had ham, eggs with beans and rice. Hubby had the huevos con chorizo burrito. Almost immediately after, I realizedI should've ordered the camarones a la diabla but it was only 9.30am. The plates arrived heaping with food. The beans were absolutely delicious laden which what was obviously, LARD. And yes, it did give me indigestion all day long but it was worth it. The salsa bar consisted of salsa fresca as well as this yummy spicy greenish salsa with bits of yellow in it. Pickled carrots and jalepenos were also available. Would definitely visit this place again if in the area. Unfortunately had to take a star off for its drab surroundings, but food was definitely 4-star!
After reading the reviews here on YELP, I decided to get 'take-out' for tonights dinner. At 7pm the place was not crowded as only one family was eating-in. I ordered a bean&cheese burrito, 2-crispy beef tacos, and a fish taco. The three of us were disappointed in our meals. The burrito was good sized , however the beans were not fresh. The beef tacos were so greasy that the flimsy white napkins had to be used to soak up the excess and the beef did not taste fresh. Additionally one taco was so broken that it was impossible to eat without getting a mess in your hand as if it was thrown into the box. The fish taco tasted old as the meat was dry as if it was left over from the previous day, plenty of tomatoes made it sort of wet, and little lettuce or cabbage left me feeling cheated. We will not be back anytime soon.
