The museum was free over the weekend for the Festival of Sail, and people were piling in like mad. I hope they got some nice donations in their cookie jar because this is a dandy little place.
Not huge at all, just right, and chock full of vintage stuff. The old diving gear fascinates me.....how did anyone dare to sink to the depths of the seas wearing those weighted shoes & other cumbersome gear?! (see my photos). They were truly brave.
Kids will get a kick out of this museum. It's not large enough to bore them silly.
We exited through the back door, greeted by a stunning harbor/bridge view.
The museum is immaculately clean, well laid-out and organized, and stocked with an interesting collection. Explore the surrounding area, too. There is always something great to see.
Ride the Red Line train along the wharf, perfect for kids. Wander the docks, and with any luck you'll have a huge cruise ship sighting like I did one day.
At the Port of LA, you'll have a fun day. I guarantee.

I think if you're interested in the fishing industry, the nautical, anything to do with ships, boats etc, this will be of great fun for you. I humored hubby since he's been wanting to go for a long time now. Personally, I have a 'take it or leave it' attitude when it comes to this place, especially since on the day of our visit, the AC was not working and it was warm and uncomfortable.
Entrance fee was only $3/adult and $1 for kids. Under 6 year olds get in for free.
If you're in the area, it's a nice place to stop and browse for 30-40 mins. It won't break your pocketbook and it wasn't all bad.

Ok. So its not the most super cool over the top museum in L.A., but then again it really is not supposed to be.
This is local history as well as the history of the world. They got a little bit of everything in here. Ever since I was little I would always get my parents to drag me into this place when we were in the area. There is just something about it that screams magical. But then again anything associated with the ocean is pretty magical to a fish out of water like me.
If you have young kids that are full of excitement but also semi-well tamed, take them here on a Saturday. You have an entire terminal for them to play with and discover.
After visiting the museum take them on the red ferry. Don't forget to also go on one of the many quick boat rides they have there, unless you are prone to sea sickness. Then wrap up the day with some souvenirs and a nice meal at one of the restaurants literally down the street. Or you can relax by the water squirting fountains while your kids enjoy getting wet.
One of the things I learned was that there used to be a fisherman's fiesta - like a rose parade but on the sea. Its really unfortunate that it does not exist anymore in the grandness that it once was. Darn labor disputes. I would have loved to see that.

Since I was a little girl I have always had a fascination with model cars, planes and boats. I use to love to put together all of the pieces with the paper instructions and the strong smelling glue. Well...if you were one of those people too you'll love this place. They have one of the largest displays of model navel ships, ocean liners and tall ships and it is so amazing to see all of the details.
It only cost $3.00 for adults and a buck for kids.

Nice place to spend 45 minutes.
History of canneries and shipping.
Pretty cool.
They gave the kids a nice free pencil that changes colors as a rsult of body heat.
