I don't get what all the negative reviews are about.
3 delicious tacos = $6.00
a tub of guacamole with chips = $4.50
beer = $4.00
half pitcher of sangria = $10.00
And it's all delicious = good time.

I read some bad reviews about this place, and they are right. The place is not very clean and the food is not tex-mex. This is the real deal, Mexican food the way they eat it there, so do not expect sizzling fajitas coming your way. Try their tacos, they are delicious. Do not forget to ask for extra green sauce!  If you like spicy food that is. The rest of the menu is pretty good too. You can try the Milanesa plate, even though is not mexican food they do it really good. Another good recommendation is their enchiladas, yum.

I've been to Los Amigos a couple of times and normally I've been fairly happy, even reccomnding it to friends. NO MORE. Last Sunday I went and had some of the worse Mexican food I have ever experienced. The Steak fajitas were in a soup of liquified green pepper and onion, essentially boiling the steak to shoe leather. The seafood fajitas mere similarly terrible. This is not how you cook Mexican food.

The service was also terrible and the waitress really paid no attention to us. Avoid this place at all costs.

5 stars for the chile rellenos! Ohh how I miss you!
I live in Santa Cruz, California..I have tried chile rellenos all over..not one place that comes close. The smokey chipotle tomato sauce with a not-too-doughy relleno made with mexican cheese (way better than Monterey Jack) is perfectly prepared!

Haters can say what they will.  I've been away from Astoria for almost 2 years now and want to cry when I think about cold nights when my roommate and I would order from Los.  Every time he'd ask the same unneccessary question:  Botanita or Botana Grande?

Ninja please.  You know how I roll.  Botana.

Cheap and right by the Ditmars stop.  Here's another tip:  Program it in your phone and call in the to go order when you hit Queensboro Plaza.  It'll be waiting for you.  Be prepared to speak at least Spanglish if you need a special order.  They will on occasion screw up your "orden" and have off nights.  Dude, you live in New York, if you're not used to it by now, I don't know what to tell you.  Still worth it, though.  One of my 3 regular spots when I lived there.  (stifled wimper).

I still have to find a good Mexican place in Astoria. After reading some reviews I tried Los Amigos.... OMG ! First  the place is dirty and oily, the tables are not clean and the salt and pepper are sticky. So are the menus. There are relatively few vegetarian options, and the veggie burrito only has onions inside..... I much prefer Fatty's veggie burrito ! The salsa was watery and most annoying, the waitress' English vocabulary amounted to 10 words. So I guess I will keep looking for a good Mexican place, sigh!

Ok, so now I can compare. Rancho Alegre was definitely much better.

Not so much that this food was bad, but I don't know it was kinda...sloppy? Filling but not necessarily satisfying. The salsa was watery and it took about 10 minutes just for them to give us water. Btw, we (we being me and 5 of my friends) were the only ones in the restaurant at the time.

Not sure I'd come again... just I was really craving Mexican and it was the first restaurant of its kind that I saw in the area.

Cheap, but not the best you can get.

Who says Astoria doesn't produce quality Mexican food?  Los Amigos is easily one of Astoria's best in the area and some of the best Mexican I've had since I've moved here in New York.  Though not everything is perfect, its still better than most of the Mexican fare that is in Manhattan, which depending on where one might be from may not be saying much.

Some of the positives that are worth mentioning right off the bat:  good prices, portions, and food, open late night (till 3AM), takes credit card, and has some speedy delivery.  With a $20 or more on a delivery order, they also will lump in a free 2 liter bottle of a soft drink of your choice.

It's almost too easy to miss this place.  The dated "Los Amigos" sign isn't the most visible due to the constant construction near the subway and the dark green (a la Mexican flag) is hard to distinguish as it blends into the neighboring bar as if it was one big operation.  From the door, the restaurant's interior looks a lot bigger than it really is.  The semi-cheesy Mexican decor is evident from the full service bar in the front all the way into the elevated section in the back.  The place can still make room for groups of 5-10 and the semi-open kitchen is uber tiny.  A jukebox is available for those who want to rock out the joint and it happens to be one of the new ones that can actually download songs from the internet.

Food is good here just simply depends on what one might decide to order.  They're one of few Mexican restaurants to serve Picaditas, Chorinachos, Mojotes, and even Entomatadas (special only).  I think their tamales are some of the freshest I've had in the area with pieces of pork that can flake apart with a flick of the fork.  Other favorites include Burrito de Huevos and Chorizo and the Enchiladas de la Casa.

However, they also lack a few things that I think most good place should have like Horchata (ugh) and good salsa.  The salsa they serve to folks at the tables is far too watery and is a real downer appetizer for folks who are expecting something better.

Whether this is seen as a plus or a minus is one thing, but most of the times I've been here the majority of the patrons were Hispanic.  Speaking Spanish to the waitresses here is far more useful than English, as a few of them have confessed to me that their English is not strong.

Ugh...you Astorians have no idea what decent Mexican food is! And Los Amigos is definitely NOT it!

The salsa is basically watered down V8 juice with some onions floating around it soaked in cilantro.  NOT GOOD!

I've had various enchiladas, nachos, and tacos hoping to find something decent I can order in a very limited corner of Astoria and have never been successful.

The final blow came when I ordered a chorizo burrito and spent the rest of the weekend in the bathroom.

Finally, what's with the good reviews for friendly staff?  I always got take out, but they were always snotty to me.  I saw one of the waitresses getting cuffed and arrested outside after I quit ordering from them, and all I could think was, "Good enough for ya!"

Seriously, if you want Mexican food, this is not the place.

I'm not sure why the reviews are so middling for Los Amigos.  Apparently my taste for Mexican food is not as sophisticated as most, so you may want to take someone else's advice.

But...

I really love the food here.  The entrees are delicious, the service is friendly, and the dining environment is very pleasant.

I've never had their takeout, which seems to be the biggest gripe.  But I recommend that you eat in here.  This is not some fast food Taco Stand, sit down, have a negro modello and enjoy.

This is a good place to stop in if you're in kind of a hurry but still want a sit-down eating experience.

The prices are more than fair and the portions are good. Overall, presentation is poor so the food tastes better than you expect it to. The rice and beans that come with many of the dishes taste better than they look but they look kinda bad.

One of the waitresses was cute but didn't speak very much English. She was very efficient and attentive, though.

How anyone can say this is "Mexican" has no idea....

The fajitas were watery and had little to no taste. I love food, I love Mexican food all varieties and prices, but this was the worst all around  ever!

A good, reliable, and inexpensive Mexican (NOT Tex- or Cali-Mex) restaurant around my way.  And don't listen to Ross I., who apparently thinks all Spanish-language music is "Mexican"; the jukebox has a good mix of salsa, merengue, cumbia, and bachata.

Very acceptable Mexican food, especially at these prices. Most entrees are $6-10, and you definitely won't be hungry tomorrow. I got a nacho platter, which was pretty amazing for $7, and my friends got chorizo and chicken burritos for about $9 a piece. We also got a pitcher of strawberry margaritas, which was filled to the brim and tasted pretty darn good (they were strong). The restaurant is always empty when we go (there are only about 6 tables in the whole joint), and the waitstaff is not super attentive, but it's perfect if you're looking for a cheap and reliable bite to eat. Also, decor is nice, with paintings lining the walls and red lanterns providing the only light.

I'm not a fan of much NYC Mexican food and this place isn't the exception.  The food's what you'd expect: greasy and with a lot of rice and beans.  I used to come here with friends to drink the relatively cheap beer and eat free chips and salsa at a table while the all-Mexican jukebox played, which made for a good low-key evening.

i've been frequenting this place for nearly 13 years.  it's been on, its been off but now it's been on for some years.  i love this place.  the combination plates are perfect and there are multiple choices...combo number five rocks! they may not you the best quality ingredients but the price is good and the flavor is packed. its good, it's relaxed and the juke box is crazy.
