Only in Los Altos would you find such an immaculate and well-staffed museum dedicated to one small (and not particularly famous) town's history.

I was looking for a new-but-nearby adventure for my little guys (5, 3 and 1) yesterday, and discovered this place thanks to the yelpers who came before me. What a nice find.

The museum is tiny; there's one main room upstairs with the permanent exhibit and electric train. My boys had fun inside for almost an hour, but in a different mood they might have only lasted 10 minutes. As noted earlier, the exhibits in this little room are remarkably well done and maintained. I also personally learned a lot about the area's history -- from the Ohlone times, Spanish and Mexican rule to the railroad barons and fruit growers. Good perspective for all of us locals who might otherwise equate this area with the still-very-young tech industry.

Outside the museum there are several picnic tables under an oak grove, a couple of sports fields and a nice climbing structure for kids in the 2-5 range.

The Los Altos History Museum is not a destination outing, but it's a fun and extremely well kept little stop for those in the area.

Do you have a little train fanatic in your life?  I have two of them under the age of 6 and both have LOVED the model train exhibit at the Los Altos History Museum.  Intended to depict Los Altos in the 1920s, the exhibit is charming, engaging and detailed.

The museum is staffed by a friendly, informative and helpful bunch and provides a wonderful overview of this valley we enjoy before the rest of the world came to know it for tech innovation.

You would be hard-pressed to find a gem like this in the area.  The grounds are beautiful- old oak trees, a small orchard, picnic tables, impecable landscaping, and happy brids singing. There is an old farm house restored for tours, and a brand new museum with small, but interesting exhibits.

Behind the library and civic center.
Kind of hard to find, but if you are looking for a nice place to sit under the trees, for your kids to play, for you to veg-out, you can't beat this place. And, did I mention?...IT'S FREE!
