The quintessential local diner. Especially great for breakfast.
I highly recommend the John E. Scramble (named after a good friend of mine). Can't even tell you exactly what's in it (but there were eggs, cheese, avocado and sausage for sure) but it was the best breakfast scramble I've ever had. HUGE portions and the hash browns were great too. Goes reallly nice with a chocolate milkshake too (don't ask) which they serve old-fashioned style in the silver tins.
The decorations are bland and service a bit slow, but the food makes up for it.

4.5 Stars...I have gone here every so often over the years. I had to go to Adobe Animal hospital that is near by, so I had Breakfast here.
I got a very large omelet that came with a plate full of home potatoes. I got the Avocado, cheddar cheese and linguisa omelet. I loved it. But I have to agree with some other posters, the coffee is just OK. Not bad, but with Pete's and Starbucks, I guess I am spoiled. An other customer raved over the Ruben sandwich she got.
I love the breakfast. The breakfast quesadilla is soo good and the banana french toast is the best french toast ive ever had. The decoration isnt fancy but all i care is about is good food.
This place has a lot going for it, their breakfast is very good. but .... I can't say that I can go back there. They pissed off my wife when they wouldn't let her have lettuce with her eggs. I met a business partner there and they were rude to him, well he may be a little gruff before coffee. Sorry, I would love to come back but they are my breakfast buddies and they are hacked off. I really like the waffles, best in the area, so five stars for breakfast but only one star for service.
My co-workers and I come here once in a while, and usually get stuff like hashbrowns, toasted sourdough bread on side, eggs sunny-side up, corned beef hash, bacon, fruit bowl side, etc. I'm not a big sandwich-eater, so I gloss over that part of the menu.
The food is pretty decent (at least if you stick to the above-mentioned selections.) I'm getting hungry for diner food now. Ooey Gooey sunny-side up eggs and bursting the yolk so it runs all over my hash browns. *stomach grumble*

ehhhh, not so good. Lemme tell ya, the coffee was terrible. You can't have a coffee shop and not have good, rich tasting coffee. They should step up to bat and have a good coffee bean, like java city. The interior looks like it was designed by the golden girls TV show circa 1980, as opposed to the classic diner appearance that you would think it has, from looking from outside. The service was sucky, college kids who had no experience and just want you to eat and leave so they can turn the tables. No heart. Now for the piece de resistance, hash browns.... these were good, but I like both sides crispy not just the top. Still much better than home fries any day. I probable won't not go back, unless I happened to be in the area. The strangest thing is the tip jar at the front register for the cooks. Don't they pay them enough so that they don't have to solicit for tips...jeez.
Good hashbrowns. Nice and crispy on top, softer on the bottom. Yummy. ^_^ My scramble was pretty average, though I did like "build your own" option. Note to self - spinach and Swiss don't mix well. Service was a little scattered, but what can you expect from high school kids?
4 stars for the hashbrowns, down to a 3 when everything else is factored in. Would probably go to Village Pantry down the street, unless I was strapped for cash. I'm a fan of places that take plastic.
This place is a wonderful place to have breakfast or lunch. It is almost always busy when I go but that just shows it's good. Everything on the menu is great and the service is friendly. The prices are decent too.
I recommend this place to anyone in the area who wants a good breakfast or lunch.
First of all, let me say that I love hash browns like a fat kid loves cake!! And this place has some grubb'n hashies. I always get hash browns with my omelet here and and EXTRA side of hash browns because they are that GOOD.
This is my favorite place for breakfast in the Mt. View/Los Altos/PA area. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that you can get some spotty service from the teen help there. But what do you expect from a Los Altos High kid driving to work in their new BMW they just got for Christmas!! Go there....you'll love it.

If you want a retro coffee shop experience, and you want a big plate of eggs and real hash browns, this is it. If you want a latte, a high fiber scone, or some other crap, get lost. The Los Altos Coffee shop is all about a big breakfast on Sunday morning, reading the paper, and scarfing a serious American breakfast.
I have a few benchmarks for a real breakfast. 1. Real hash browns. 2. Can I get corned beef hash? 3. Real rye bread. 4. Did they butter my toast or outsource this to me? 5. Hot sauce selection. 6. Can they cook an egg sunny side up or will I get it baked? I could go on, but the availability of a true traditional breakfast is slipping away, people.
I cannot give these wonderful people five stars because there is a lot of average sandwich fare on the menu which is a mistake to order in place of, did I say eggs? Go for breakfast. Order an omelet the size of the left side of your head. Order fried eggs and bacon. And check out the Pepper Plant hot sauce.

Possibly best waffle in Bay Area. Multigrain with strawberries. mmm!
Good little neighborhood breakfast diner. They server your old school classic breakfasts. Pancakes, omelette's, etc. My usual is the corned beef hash and eggs with sourdough toast. They also server sandwiches and other diner lunch fare. Since it's old school place it's only open for breakfast and lunch. The weekends can be quite popular so you'll be in for a wait or hit the counter for faster service.

Been going here for years, ever since I was in high school and they offered a 20% discount to Eagle Card holders. Every time I come in, I order the same thing: Brian's Special Breakfast. This thing is the Cadillac of breakfasts: scrambled eggs, linguica or sausage, green onions, yellow onions over rice with a side of hash browns or home fries or fruit cup and toast. It makes my mouth water.
The hash browns at the Coffee Shop is what dreams are made of. Crispy-fried outside and soft on the interior. Also, my friend from high school Marisa is now the manager, and she is super-cool. It has gotten pricey, however, which is cause for the lack of five-star rating. I know it's Los Altos, but some of us have a hard time paying 13 bucks for breakfast!!
My favorite biscuits and gravy in the whole bay area. Portions are small and pricey but very high quality.
They use drop biscuits here instead of the standard buttermilk biscuits but it works well. They gravy is very creamy. The corned beef and hash is good as well.
its a coffee shop but allot more...I love the breakfasts they offer. bring cash no credit cards though
