We've stayed at the Looking Glass Inn about half a dozen times in the last three years. It's a great value in a good location. Their rooms are neat and tidy, and the multi bedroom suites are great deals when traveling with friends or family. Complete kitchens make it easy to stay in and relax with an inexpensive meal.
The staff are friendly and helpful (even cutting me a great rate on an extra night when I made a mistake and booked Thu-Sat instead of Fri-Sun nights). And best of all... they are VERY dog friendly! The rooms don't show it, but most rooms allow dogs, and they give you a large basket with all the towels, sheets, water/food bowls and doo doo bags you'll need!
The biggest downside is that it is right across from Mo's and a string of public beach access parking. This means during the busy weekends it is very busy w/ cars and people. If you're looking for a nice quiet get away, it might not be your cup of tea.
In the historic Taft area, it's a block or two from a few places to get basics eats (burgers or dogs) and also a grocery, a little bakery and a few taverns if an adult beverage in a smoke filled dark room is your cup of tea.

We only stayed here overnight, but wish we could have stayed much much longer. All of the rooms are more like apartments. Ours had a living room with two couches, a full kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom with a queen sized bed.
Although the hotel is dog friendly, you would never know it: there was not a trace of dog hair in the room, nor did it smell of dogs. We did bring our pooch with us and she was in heaven! They give you a nice pet basket upon check-in, with sheets to cover the couches (if you let your dog on the furniture), a dog towel, bowls, treats, etc.
Technically the hotel is not beachfront beachfront - which I've seen some people complain about, but personally don't understand. The hotel is on an inlet or bay about 0.1 miles from the 'actual' beach, if even that. Across from your room is a lovely view of the beach and water. Somehow this area seems spared from the constant fog on the rest of the coast.
The beach itself is wide and expansive, with lots of space for lying out or playing with the kids. Lots of driftwood peppers the beach which can make for interesting photographs. There is an ice cream shop and separate restaurant right across from the hotel.
All in all, I can't find a single thing to complain about!

Wow, first class all the way. We chose to stay here because of the central location and the fact they allow dogs.
We were greeted with fresh cookies in the lobby and a basket for our dogs that included sheets, towels, dog bowls, and treats.
The room itself was very nice- looked to be fairly recently updated and was super clean. The bathroom had a nice walk in shower and bonus double sinks. We had 2 queen beds in our room, though we only needed one. The bed was very comfortable and we got a great night's sleep both nights we stayed.
There was a nice pet area complete with scoopers for easy clean up. Believe me, this is a nice feature. They also allow you to leave pets kenneled in your room here, a feature we haven't had at some hotels in the area.
Really, the only downside to this place is that it is right across from Mo's, which doesn't provide the most excellent view, but it is still nice.
We did spend a little more to stay here than some other places we've been to at the coast, but I feel it was worth it because the little things make a big difference.
