Corkscrews and can openers are always forgotten on a picnic packing list, aren't they? Or is it just me? Anyway, this Long's has the wee little wine bottles with screw-off caps, and their can openers are half the price of Safeway's.
The variety reminds me of the old general stores you see in old Westerns - a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Here you can a buy t-shirt and organic lip-gloss to go with your wine and your can opener.
Just call me the rebel of Yelp, the Che Guevara of milquetoast reviews, the Leon Trotsky foil to the typical, gushing, "Everything is marvelous!" reviews of nearly everything on Yelp! I tried TWICE to shop at this Longs, only to have to make an about-face and head out the door! Why? The crowds, the humanity, the eau-de-sweaty bodies, mosh pit hoards of people waiting in line here during lunch! If being cheek-to-jowl with strangers is your thing, or you have a psychiatric disorder known as frotterism, then this is the place for you. If however, you are like me, and prefer a slightly more serene shopping experience, then avoid this place like the plague!
pros:
- decent selection of drugstore stuff, though nothing like a cvs on the mainland

- pharmacy manager is super nice - called me to apologize for a problem with my prescription
cons:
- location is maybe too convenient - it gets ridiculously crowded here during lunchtime
- is it just me or does it smell like stale urine when you first walk in? i've noticed this about a lot of businesses in chinatown so maybe it's not their fault, but still...gross...
I've been known to frequent this longs once, twice, even thrice a day. It's SO convenient and opens fairly early. The selection is pretty decent and I thoroughly appreciate the volume of large (1.5 liter), cold, bottles of water and other beverages readily available in their cooler section.
They have a large selection of everything, from incidentals to wine and non-alcoholic beverages, snacks, asian and hawaiian snackies, especially, holiday-centric candies and stuff, small home appliances (rice cookers, irons, etc), decent stationary and hair/beauty product selections. Also, there's oftentimes really good deals on this that or the other.
Just beware of the crowds. It gets super busy here and it seems that only recently they've been coming close to staffing the registers with enough clerks to get people moving out of the store.
My only complaints - they sell out fast, they close early-ish, and it's oftentimes WAY TOO CROWDED. Located right on the Hotel St/Bishop St. bus lines, many elderly citizens bus into this particular longs to shop the sales. Combine this with the HPU/Argosy/other downtown business persons traffic and you've got a crowded nightmare between 9 and 5. On weekdays, they're closed by 6 so there's only a small post-work day window to grab what you need. Also, stocking the aisles when it's super crowded is nearly impossible so if there's a sale, chances are they've sold out of whatever product (especially the canned goods) by 10 am.
This is a really great Long's because of its location. Right slap in the heart of downtown, it opens early and people are in there browsing before work. During lunch time it is packed with people (so don't go then) doing shopping in the little time that they have.
For me, it's just a place to hang out if I get to work too early. I try not to go often because I can't leave there without buying something.
