Long Sands Beach
1 review for Long Sands Beach
I'm not much of a 'beach guy,' but Long Sands Beach in York, ME is a pretty kickass beach. We got there mid morning during low tide and had a good 100 yard stretch of beach, from the rocks below the road out to the surf, on which to play. The low tide sand is fantastic for recreation - soft enough so that it's gentle even on my sensitive feetsies, but firm enough that you don't sink to your ankles every time you try to run. It's perfect for a rousing game of Frisbee, football, or in our case, kickball.
The beach was surprisingly spacious too - we were a good 50 yards away from the nearest person, and this was on a beautiful Saturday morning in August.
Parking is a bit difficult - there are metered spaces, $0.25/15 minutes, up and down Route 1A, but not enough for a busy day at the beach. We got lucky, but if you don't I noticed several private lots between motels on the other side of the strip which offered parking for anywhere from $10 to $20 for the day.
There were also several restaurants and stores along the strip, and a Bathhouse near Oceanside Ave which offers restrooms for beach goers. Apparently Lifeguards are on duty from June to Labor Day, but I didn't see any.
For those of you interested in sight seeing, the famous Nubble Lighthouse is just up the road.
All in all, it was a great day on the beach for me and my 14 cohorts - looking forward to coming back again soon.
