Review Highlights
Ever since it first opened when I lived 3 blocks away Long In The Tooth has proven to be my one stop shop for albums and DVDs. But of late I've been absolutely enamored by it's super amazing book shelf. I've found everything from Alice in Wonderland to The Necronomicon inside it (But I didn't find Crazy From The Heat yet Aaron.)! And it's always well stacked with Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Bukowski, Douglas Adams, Chuck Palahnniuk, and some of my other favorites.
But the steals that you'll find among it's interesting selections make it a book lovers dream (and a secret that I sadly must pay forward for the sake of my friends!). Just today I scored "The Zen of Zombie - Better Living Through The Undead" (I'm serious!) for $6. I also picked up "Street World - Urban Art And Culture From Five Continents" a hardcover super huge hard back full gloss photo book that normally retails for $35 for just $12. And now that this secret is out you better save some for me, or else!

My second favorite CD store in the entire city (AKA will always be number 1). The store has an… Read more »
I just got some really exciting stuff from this shop. I have to say, though, I will shop anywhere that publicly displays a brak cookie jar.
Long in the tooth reminds me of the kite shop I used to work at, in that if you don't work there you will have to do some serious rifling through stuff to find what you're looking for. Staff is helpful and pointed me in a few directions in order to find a needle for my broken record player
Best record store in Philly. Great selection of vinyl and CDs.
There was a slight music-nerdier-than-thou feel about this place. Luckily enough me and my music browsing companion can hang.
I wasn't super impressed with the selection of vinyl. I always check 3 or 4 different bands in a store to see what they're vinyl is like for these 4 different bands they didn't have anything super rare. I will give it a chance to find that rare gem though.
It's kind of close to my work but I don't have a long enough lunch break to go there. Will definitely put it on my list of places to go when I need to get a cd or something.
In a world where the cool record store is increasingly non-existent, and where the ones that do exist seem to be staffed with "too cool for school" twenty-somethings with bad attitudes, Long in the Tooth is an absolute gem. It is a diamond in a sea of cubic zirconia.
Owned by some peeps who also run the place, including Janice - a funky punk rock mama who just recently gave birth to beautiful baby Violet - LITT is primarily focused on your punk/alternative scene, but it can be counted on for other rare gems. It is THE go-to place if you really want to spend a little time to hunt for a rarity without feeling like you're getting caked in dirt and grime in a disorganized bin of chaos (AFK Records, anyone?)
I love it so much that when I was filming my documentary cable access series "James Bradford's Gay Guide to Philadelphia", I made a stop there. The final footage was cut but an outtake is on YouTube (should be pretty easy to find with a search.)
The prices are always right; they don't do massive mark-ups for new vinyls like many places, so new vinyl releases are often around $10-12. They aren't scouring ebay for the chance to list their rare finds at a massive profit. They just want loyal customers to keep coming, and they treat you fairly.
Don't miss your chance to visit Long in the Tooth and if you go, tell Janice that James Bradford said hi!
punk music + vinyl + horror movies = yippie!
cds are good prices and there are lots of "oh shit i remember that band" moments worthy of $8. plus there's always good music playing and good convo at the counter.
have only been there twice so far so i can't give the full five stars...just yet.
My boyfriend is really into music and I'm really into movies, but we're both really broke.
PRAISE THE LORD FOR LONG IN THE TOOTH!
Together we own over 200 movies, 1/4 of which have been purchased from there. I can honestly say I haven't purchased a movie for over $12 and my boyfriend buys arm fulls of cds for around $25. Our bank accounts have been thanking us ever since finding this gem.
They carry every thing to fit every taste. Their horror movie selection is sublime, the vinyl is cheap and extensive and they carry so many cds that it's sometimes overwhelming.
The couple that own it are really nice too. They remember all of their customers and will put in special orders and holds for you. They'll also give great recommendations for things.
Visiting this place is how I relax on the weekends.
This record store has such good word of mouth. That I haven't even been there and i'm going to give it 4 stars. My friend got Tom Waits "Nighthawks at the Diner" on Vinyl here. Quite the find. And for some reason my lame ass hasn't supported this local record store by buying some records that I won't be able to play because I need to get a new needle. Step 1. Go to Long in the Tooth. Step 2. Buy some Vinyl. Step 3. Realize that in addition to the other Vinyl I recently bought I have some new Vinyl that needs listening. Step 4. Buy a freaking needle. Step 5. Attach needle and play that Bob Dylan record you bought 3 months ago....
---Update---
I just went there for the first time today and dropped 133 bucks on merch, and I did the right thing. I got a few cds, but mostly a bunch of rekkids. Got some Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly, Punk , Reggae and a Steven Wright comedy record. They have a turntable for you to listen to stuff if ya want.. I told the girl behind the counter buying this stuff gave me a real good excuse to finally get a needle, she was real helpful and told me armand's was the best place to go for needles... good selection, good prices, good staff. You made me very happy today Long in the Tooth.
The second record store I visited in Philly and what a good find. LITT has a great selection of new and used rock CD's. I found a couple albums I"d been looking out for for a long long time including a GYBE! album. The staff is really knowledgeable and was very friendly. I ended up talking to one of the cashiers about EITS and GYBE! for at least 5-10 minutes.
This store also has a fairly decent jazz CD selection, both used and new. They had a really good selection of jazz in vinyl format. I had to flee before I spent every last dime I had.
Ah... Long in the Tooth. What a great store! The staff is very helpful and friendly, and the selection here is top notch. They have pretty much everything here, so if your looking for records by Chaka Khan and Slipknot... Look no further! Long in the Tooth - The one stop shop for awesome records!
Cheap used CDs and DVDs and great selection! There is also lots of space which is a huge plus. I love looking through the New Arrivals. The staff is great, no complaints. They also sell select books, vinyl, and t-shirts. I tried to avoid this place sometimes, just because I always buy CDs when I don't have much disposable income!
Named after my favorite Julia Styles observation, this is a relatively new record store in the 215. Moreover, it's the only one I can think of between 13th and 40th streets, and I think that's pretty sweet.
Long in the Tooth will buy your old vinyl, at a decent price. They'll sell other peoples' vinyl to you at an also decent price. They cater to all tastes and genres, and unlike so many places in these troubled times, they'll special order whatever you want.
Support this record store, and keep vinyl alive. Oh yeah, they also have other formats (CD) for you more evolved folks. What a great asset to the neighborhood, and a breath of cool new life on a hip block.
i do believe that i have found a place to occupy the hole in my heart left by spaceboy.
i spent a mere 25 minutes here, leaving $100 poorer. they have a great selection of vinyl, reasonably priced. i only flicked idly though the cd bins, but there were some gems in there, too.
my only regret is that i didn't discover this place sooner!
One of my favorite places to buy vinyl in the city. The Staff is relaxed and accommodating. The actual way the records are stacked could use a little more breathing room, but this is a small negative stacked against a multitude of positives. The used cd bins are the best in the city. Quality, not quantity (I'm looking at YOU A.K.A.).
I've been to most of all the record stores in the city to build a decent record collection and Long in the Tooth is one of the best. If you are into used and new records the selection is worthy of an hour or so of picking through. As a fan of indie rock, classic rock, and metal I usually walk out with at least 2 or 3 records every time I go there. They have a huge collection of Jazz LPs, 45s, used CDs and used DVDs that I personally haven't gone through (pretty much because I need to walk out with a few dollars in my pocket) but look promising if you are looking for these items. There is no New Section for anything in the store which for some may not be a good thing, but for me is great because I usually find something used that is awesome that I normally wouldn't find in any other record store. Also, the dude behind the counter is always friendly and always appreciative of your business. If you are from the city or just visiting, looking for a great record store and haven't been here yet you need to go!
With our beloved CD stores being flushed down the drain thanks to downloaded music, thank Jeebus for Long in The Tooth! Long in The Tooth takes me back to my days of used CD shopping in college. Located in Center City, the store features both new & used CDs as well as used books, movies, and records at very affordable prices. The selection is great and the store is always kept very organized. I have never had a hard time finding anything at Long in The Tooth, whether it be new or used.
Good independent record store, slightly hidden on Sansom St. As Bill M said, it's a good place to visit while waiting for a play/movie/comedy show in any of the nearby venues. But it's also worth a trip in itself.
i have to agree, that the only bothersome thing about this wonderful store is how cramped the merch is.
other than that, before i lived in philly, i visited the place, and stopped in "long in the tooth."
i tried not to be as enamored as i was, but couldn't.
i ended up buying well over the amount of things i had room for in my suitcase, and simply dealt with carrying an extra paper bag on the plane home.
that's how good the selection was: uncomfortable plane-ride worthy.
i could spend hours in here. books, dvds, cds, records... they have it all. it feels like a hang out spot for a lot of people but still the staff is nice and helpful. you can find some really rare punk and hardcore stuff here. just go through and check out the names, record titles, and record art of some of the old punk/oi/thrash/hardcore records and you will laugh for hours. unless youre easily offended... in which case, just dont even go into the store.
This is definitely a cool record store in an area that previously lacked one. They have a large selection of every genre and the staff is a cool group who are up for musical discussions. The prices are reasonable compared to other independent record stores too, so check it out.
