I saw a production at the Long Beach Playhouse and absolutely loved the layout of the Main Stage Theater. The seating is a horseshoe around a stage that extends out past the center of the room. The show I watched utilized the entire length of the stage, so during certain scenes it was nearly theater in the round. There are about 200 seats in there, but it doesn't even seem like that many. It makes for a very intimate performance.

They have a sucky parking situation (it spills over onto the neighboring residential streets). The layout of the lobby, patio, snack bar and will call areas is awkward. I vote for a better snack bar that serves beer and wine (happy customers/easy revenue).

The cool stage and seating shape won out for me over external complaints. I'd happily return (but I'd bring my own refreshments).

I love the Long Beach Playhouse; it's an excellent place to go see some local professional theater. There are two stages: the studio is a traditional stage in which the stage is elevated and the audience sits in front, and the mainstage is one in which the stage is on the floor in the middle and the audience sits all around. Both are very, very intimate. Lately I've just gone when an actor friend of mine is performing, but over the years I've always enjoyed the plays here. The casts are always delightful and the production very good for such a small place.

The first time I came here was for my "anti-prom" many years ago. Instead of going to the prom, my h.s. boyfriend and I got dressed up and went to dinner and a play. Fun!

Tickets are usually $20, unless it's preview night, which is 2 for $20. There is a discounted rate for seniors, and student rush tickets are $10. More expensive than a movie, but much more fun! Get out and do something different. Check out the website for the schedule (http://www.lbph.com) and come enjoy yourself.

I really liked the intimacy of this theater (main stage) but this place is musty as all hell.  It is dying, in fact.  The sound system must be from the 80's.  The chairs were comfortable and the theater had good acoustics, but the intermission "atrium" felt more like the  patio at a senior citizens live-in nursing facility.  There isn't much vitality to this place, needless to say.  I was there on a Saturday night.  The performance I saw (I won't mention the title here) was fair...it was the theater itself that really came out incredibly mediocre.  Though I do have to say that someone ought to find it in their heart to donate more money to the prop department.  The props in the performance I saw were just laughable...I mean, bad.

For $22 ($12 if you are a student) you can see a crew crew put on a great play.  Excellent place.
