For a little hole in the wall of what appears to be a shady strip mall...this place was tops.
The breakfast burrito was outstanding and so filling.
The chicken burrito was also amazing. Both Andrew W and I kept saying how tasty our little dinner was.
I wish we were making the drive from S. California to Denver again so we could stop in.
On top of great food the decor of this place was super hip...gave me some ideas for my own home. -

Tried the sopas, tacos, quesadilla, and salad. Everything was mediocre at best. Also, they totally forgot half of our order, then when they finally brought it out, it was wrong.
It was very disappointing since it had such a high rating. -
Review from Pete F.
By SoCal standards, Lola's food measures up to an average. Compared to the rave reviews, this was quite a let down. The best were the chips which were thick and salsa delicious. The carne asada was shaved thin and flavorful and tender. The chili verde pork was anything but tender but the verde sauce was great.
The kids had the cheese enchilada which was what you would expect. The rice and bean were good but not as out of this world as some of the reviewers noted. Also, the portion was very underwhelming. Those with big appetites beware.
Yes, bathrooms were clean but I hardly think this is something to rave about. Overall, a good place but I don't think I'd make a special pit stop here for a meal. -

Seriously, the BEST MEXICAN FOOD I've ever had in my life. IN MY LIFE!!
My family and I almost ordered everything on the menu. Everything was so amazingly yummy!
It started off with the best tortilla chips I've ever tasted and amazing salsa.
Our favorites were definitely the Carne Asada and the Chicken Verde enchiladas. I usually hate rice and beans but Lola's rice and beans were delicious!
The guy who works at the cashier, is the best. Totally made us feel welcome, and he has GREAT TEETH.
The next time I drive from SF to vegas. Definitely stopping by again!
THANK YOU!!! -

On our way to Los Angeles, we had to make a pit stop.. "There's gotta be somethin around here to eat other than fast food.. " Went with the Yelp "nearby" search and this place came up to be quite the find..
No. 8 Chilaquilles: "A choice of 2 Eggs or Carne Asada, topped with Lola's green sauce, sour cream, onions and ranchero cheese" $7 w/ both $9 1/2
- This will probably be my order every time I make a pit stop in barstow in the near future. I went with both the The Carne Asada and the Eggs, Might as well! The Asada had a certain aroma I couldn't figure.. I took a bite and my gosh it was Divine!! I haven't tasted anything like it.. Wow! The rice was better than usual. Beans weren't All mashed up/refried But had whole pieces and they were awesome! The chips, cheese, onion and green sauce.. Just brilliant! I would of never thought chips with a little this and that would be that satsifying..
No. 9 Tortas: Carne Asada, topped with beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, avocado and jalapenos $7 (plate, with beans and rice)
- Behemoth Sized, with that same Memorable Asada with a whole medley of veggies to make an incredible sandwich! Beans and Rice better than most I've had.. Another Blue Ribbon candidate!
Zincronizadas: "Two corn tortillas with ham & cheese then grilled"
- I only ordered this since I've been to numerous mexican restaurants but never heard or seen this before.. Sounded like a ham and cheese quesadilla.. Basically it was, it had ham and yellow american cheese in between the tortillas as described.. With diced tomato, cilantro and that mexican queso sprinkled on top (gave it a little ummphh).. Overall, it was expected and good overall..
For all you travelers, taking the 15 freeway going to or from Vegas (or wherever), you might want to take the few minutes to venture off route a bit and have a taste of their Carne Asada.. I can't recommended it enough!!Listed in: CARNE ASADA EXCEPCIONALES

HOLY MOLY! Went to this little gem when passing through town. My family looked at me like I was crazy for picking it, because the location but, http://Yelp.com reviews prevailed! It was AWESOME. Authentic, down home, Mexican cookin'. Everything we ate was delicious. Like the other reviews read, it's a restaurant, and not a quick taco shop. It really could function as either one though. We sat 4 to a table and were a bit cramped, but could have easily pulled up another table and accommodated more. Even though the odd strip mall venue was kinda bizarre, the food was too amazing to even think twice about going back. Now, I just need to find more excuses to head to Barstow. The outlet mall excuse only works so many times ladies!
Food: 5 stars
Cleanliness: 5 stars (place was spotless)
Atmosphere: 5 stars
Service: 5 stars
Hours: 5 stars (place opens at 4am!) -

Yes, I'm half Mexican, but just because I am, doesn't ever mean I've been given the opportunity to have some fresh home cooking grub, my family is vegan!
But alas, Lola's Kitchen helps to fulfill that gap of my dietary past, everything here taste fresh and homemade. I was in love with my enchiladas. This place actually has me looking forward to my drive to Vegas! -

Lola, the owner is a fantastic lady, and so is her cooking!
No2. Chicken enchilada (comes with rice and beans)-4/5
Veggie plate( self orchestrated)-4.5/5
Fresh Chips and salsa(complimentary)-4.5/5
$7 per plate.
The bathroom was so clean and fresh smelling, I was impressed!
Total for two people with one drink was $16 w/tax.
Would definitely go again if I ever visit within 30 mile radius of the place! -

I stopped by while visiting my hometown of Barstow. Several family members and friends told me I wouldn't be let down. They were right!!! The food is similar to New Mexico style Mexican food, lots of favors I haven't had since living at home with good ol' mom. I know a good tortilla when I have one and their tortillas are the real deal...not mass produced thin tasteless meat holders but full body, great tasting, eat on their own tortillas!
The two gals running the counter and kitchen were very friendly and welcoming and that will always bring me back to a solid stay around business. Job well done- you will see me again.
I always like to see family when I'm in town but I will politely excuse myself and visit Lola's kitchen again. -

This little place is a great breakfast stop on the way to or from Vegas! Don't let the small and run down shopping center deter you, as this place serves solid Mexican food. Nice people and good service.

As a traveler from Texas I definitely have certain expectation of Mexican food. I certainly know that California and Texas has shared their differences of taste pallet. I would recommend Lola's kitchen the food was good in flavor and restaurant had a clean appearance and friendly service. If your from Texas or even a local you will enjoy your experience at Lola's kitchen.

Good home-style Mexican food. None of that fast food. I would say forget Del Taco and head to Lola's Kitchen. The place looks sketchy from the outside due to the dark insufilm on the window and the glass door but once inside, it has a nice cozy decor. The food is good and cheap and authentic. Definitely recommend if you are in Barstow.

Wow, I underestimated Barstow! Lola's Kitchen was AWESOME. The Chile Colorado was out of this world...leaps and bounds beyond the beef chunks in gravy you find in Sacramento. Great, friendly service and a fun atmosphere. Need to figure out how to convince the owner to move north...

This is exactly the kind of place you are using yelp to find. Small, family-owned, inexpensive, cheerfully decorated non-chain restaurant about 2 blocks off I-15 that serves delicious food that is filling yet light.
Gloria's Special with Chile Verde ($7, salad with pork stewed in green sauce) filled me up without slowing me down for the rest of the drive. Tacos (also about $7 for plate w/ rice and beans) were also good and fresh. Total for 2 adults and 2 children was $20.20 (no drinks, but lemon water is free), although I think they gave one of our kids an extra burrito without charging us.
You order at the counter, find a table, and they bring the food to you, quickly. You can be on the road again within 1/2 hour. -

My friends and I were looking for a place to eat on our way back from Vegas that's NOT at your usual Barstow stop. We found this family owned Mexican restaurant, and the owner came to our tables to make recommendations and gave us endless chips & salsa!
Their quesadilla is quite good - I asked for it with meat. My friends got tacos and they were quite good as well. For the price, this place was good. -

Thank you again yelp for saving me from the flavorless drudge of interstate fast food! I would have never found this hidden away gem were it not for my fellow yelpers.
In a quiet town, in a quiet strip mall parking lot, lies a true gem. I came in and ordered what I consider the yardstick of any good Mexican place - the Chile Verde. I filled my drink and took a seat, snacking on the chips and salsa.
A few minutes later, a big steaming plate of hot pork, beans, and rice come out. The smell was amazing. So far so good. I took a tortilla, tore off a piece, then went in to pick up a piece of the pork to get started.
I couldn't pick it up. Every hunk of pork I tried to scoop up shredded itself under the pressure of a small piece of tortilla. Jesus, how long did they cook this stuff for, two weeks?
I finally got the hang of picking it up without destroying it, and OH MY GOD the flavor. Warm, spicy, succulent. Who could have possibly known that one of the best mexican places I had ever eaten at would be a little strip mall joint in the desert. The beans and rice were fairly standard, nothing new there, but the Chile Verde was borderline unreal. I've never had pork that tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked.
I'll never dishonor myself with freeway fast food in this town again.
*A quick aside on the family that runs it* =
While I was eating, two women with what appeared to be an autistic child came in to eat. The kid was in a very disagreeable mood and somewhat running wild. While the women had their backs turned, he hauled ass into the back of the place and into the kitchen. Did the staff get mad, freak out, tell them come get your kid under control? No. One of the ladies in the kitchen picked him up on her hip and showed him what she was cooking until his mom found him back there. What kind of place does that? It says a lot about a persons character to see how they treat people they dont have to treat well.
I'll be back EVERY time I drive through. -
Review from Nick S.
This was a great find on our road trip out to Las Vegas. The food was tasty, the atmosphere was very nice and the staff were friendly. Also, the food was cheap. Really cheap. I had the mole enchiladas and they were great.

Everything I'd want to say about this place has already been said as well as I could by others. From the outside, it's a non-descript hole-in-the-wall type joint sandwiched between other little holes-in-the-wall in a strip mall. Inside, it's a well-appointed little restaurant. Nothing fancy, but clean and it looks nice. And it is a restaurant, not a taqueria.
By the way, I didn't really understand what other people meant when they said the food here was filling yet light... until I ate it. Totally get it. I ate quite a bit of Mexican food, which normally makes me feel bloated and uncomfortable, but the food at Lola's Kitchen left me feeling satisfied, but not uncomfortable. Nice.
Disclaimer: Lola's Kitchen would be a 4-star in San Francisco or L.A., but compared to what else Barstow has to offer, it rocks! -

LA - Vegas weekender friends: stop here for some good Mexican grub!
What a welcome change to road food. Service is excellent - everyone makes you feel like you've been going there for years. Lola is there to greet you with a smile herself.
Got the green enchiladas and the sauce was so good I mopped the rest of it up with those crispy chips! They're filled with beautifully shredded tender chicken and topped with a mountain of cheese, sour cream and onions. Mexican rice is usually a crap shoot, but theirs is yummy - especially with the beans and a little of the salsa.
Must also thank you, fellow yelpers, for yet another local find. -

Fellow yelpers, again you have set my expectations too high and once again was disappointed.
Driving back from a Vegas family trip, found this place thanks to Yelp. For all of those who said this is the best mexican food in town, i don't even want to imagine what the worst is. Let me tell you the good stuff first:
- Cashier/Server- He was a really cute, and very nice guy.
- Rice & Beans- Rice was good, great presentation and not too greasy.
- Enchiladas Suizas: The sauce was good, tasted pretty much homemade but a little too much salt.
Now the bad:
- Mexican food with no agua fresca? Really come on I was really looking forward for a jamaica.
- Salsa- the red salsa was so so so salty, that i could barely eat it.
- Carne Asada- YUCK, YUCK, AND YUCK, the worst, questionable and not way it was actual meat. I think even Taco Bell's carne asada is more real. No flavor, the texture was very questionable and just not good. -

Bypass the fast-food on your way home from Vegas. Stop here. The food is absolutely worth your time.
I ordered carne asada & a chicken sope w/ rice & beans. Carne asada was cut thin & cooked to perfection. Chicken was covered in a tasty verde sauce and the sope had a perfect edge of crispiness. The rice and beans were heaven.
The boyfriend had steak in red sauce w/ rice & beans. And It was so damn good I tried to steal his dinner. (can't recall the name - it's #13 on the menu)
Prices were very reasonable. The place was small and homey. Lola's son was taking orders, serving and making sure you had everything you needed.
This will be a regular stop on our way through town! -

We were on a road trip and just passeed through town. We never would have found this great place without Yelp, but it was WELL worth the side trip off the freeway. Great food, great pricing, friendly staff. The only problem was we hit it at a pretty busy time and the seating is a bit limited.

I'm staying in Barstow for just one night and didn't know where to eat for dinner until I found a good review about Lola's Kitchen on yelp. This place has great food and a very nice employee helped with our order and was very nice to us.
I got the Huevos a La Mexicana- eggs with cilantro, onions, tomatoes and I added some guacamole on top. This dish was delicious- very flavorful, healthy, and wasn't greasy. The chips and their red slightly spicy salsa was extremely good as well- I couldn't stop eating them. My boyfriend got the Thursday special Echiladas Mole, which he found to be very delicious and satisfying.
In a small town where there are mostly fast food type places, I highly recommend Lola's! -

Thanks to yelpers I found this wonderful gem. My husband who hates Mexican food loved it, so that says a lot. This is about as good as it gets for Mexican food. It's a small place, but colorful, cheerful and very clean. The staff is caring and respectful. But food is the star here, and if you don't stop for it you'll never know what your missing. Hands down the best beans I've ever put in my mouth.

Review from Danna C.
Had lunch here en route from Vegas to L.A. Worth the slight detour to get some local food rather than eating at one of the plethora of fast foo chains dotting the highwa.
Like most Mexican restaurants, we were served complimentary chips and salsa. The chips tasted fresh and the salsa had a nice kick to it.
I had the chile relleno combo which was tasty and had lots of yummy cheese in it. The rice was fresh and the beans were runny (in a good way). My wife had the taquitos special. They were good but small.
The interior was cozy and charming. The owners were very friendly and seemed to care abot their establishment.
My only hesitation to returning is the B health dept. rating in the window, though everything I saw seemed to be clean and appropriately handled. -

We went to Lola's for lunch during the week. The dining room is tiny, barely room for 20 people. The menu was varied, mexican of course, but the food wasn't the tastiest and was more expensive than I thought it should be.
I think they're on the right track but just need to put a little more effort into their delivery. -

San Francisco, CA
The last stop on a three week cross country trip and Lola's Kitchen was the best. The flavors are clean and fresh. You walk in to a small eating area (I think this place does a lot of takeout), order and sit down. A bowl of fresh chips and very good salsa is brought to your table. My entree was great, tostadas with shredded beef, was great, just enough.
For anyone traveling the I-40 E/W corridor needs to stop.
This place does not stand out, it is in the mall with the Von's. No sign on the street. And though the place takes only cash there is ATM at the Von's. -
Review from Molly M.
Pasadena, CA
Absolutely delicious. The chile verde sauce is complicated, and the beans are velvety. If you make the stop, you'll pull into a dicey parking lot and find it between the dollar store and a pawn shop, and you'll think that some white person with an iPhone wanted to seem hipster autentico by giving this place a great review, but these beans are worth so much more than that.

San Jose, CA
Decent food for a great price. It's a family owned restaurant and they're all so very nice. It was our first time here about 2 months ago and the cashier helped us with the questions we had about food on their menu.. very helpful. Don't expect too much because it is in a small town. I've actually tried the carne asada burritos. The meat was cooked perfectly, but I should've just gotten something else other than a burrito since it did throw me off a little. I have high expectations when it comes to Mexican food especially since I compare it to those in San Jose. Overall, it's one of the more decent Mexican joints to eat at when you're in Barstow.

Lola's is always a good place to visit no matter what time of the day or meal. There are good prices for their dishes and the food is very well made. There isn't much seating for the guests but I'm fine with having to get and go the food.
The chips and salsa are great. -

Where do I begin...Lola's is amazing. Barstow is a small town full of fast food eateries that will likely give you heartburn and an upset stomach, but Lola's is not one of these places.
This family owned gem does everything right. When you walk in, the staff is very friendly and welcoming. I normally order the combo chicken burrito and it always tastes like perfection. My hubby enjoys the flauta (which actually is the size of a chimichanga) and the rice and beans.
I won't be in the desert much longer, but Lola's has won me over as my favorite restaurant in town. Haha, I just noticed my sister wrote a review of Lola's when she visited here a few years ago :P -

Well, Yelpers, thanks again for another great find! This place has great Mexican fare on the cheap! I had enchiladas with green sauce and my husband had a carne asada burrito. Both came with rice and refried beans, and chips and salsa. The entrees were huge! We only ate half and took half home for a later meal. The rice and beans are fantastic! My enchiladas were filled with tender white meat chicken. Eric's steak in his HUGE carne asada burrito was really tender as well. As one of the other Yelpers said, it is small in there so get there early or take it to go. We will definitely go there again when we are passing through Barstow!
