Neighborhood: North Beach/Telegraph HillAHHHHHHHHH! paper! yeah, i love paper. it's my favorite.
and this store. letterpress cards! sighhhhhhhhhh.
a perfect place to pick up a cute gift for a baby shower, or for a friend who enjoys yummy-smelling candles or pretty journals/stationary.
the owner is SO nice. definitely worth a little stop, even just to admire the beautiful paper.
Cute friendly lil neighborhood stationery and gift store in North Beach. I didn't care much about the stationery but they had these infant shirts that said "iPoo'ed" with a iPod-like dial on the front playing on the iPod theme. Now that's really funny.
Bottom line: Cool neighborhood place. And yes, I am from Silicon Valley so can't help it.

Best place to buy a card or little gift for a friend! The owners and people who work here are very nice and helpful!
I love this little shop, with it's wonderful array of stationery, journals, notecards, greeting cards, books, and cute gifty things. I walk in and it's like "I'll take one of everything, please." Plus, they greet you when you walk in, and ask if you need any assistance (Paper Source on Fillmore, send your people here to learn how it's done).
I wish there was a Lola of Pac Heights!

Cuteness. Have a nice selection of cards, stationary, candles, photo albums and invitations. Lots and lots of baby stuff. Kind of sickens me when every photo album they have in there involves their children, but I appreciate where they're coming from (let's recap here and remind everyone that I don't have any children or want them anytime soon, so proud parents always fascinate me). Great customer service. Other than that, it's a good store if not a little posh.

LOVE this shop. It makes me want to own my own card/gifts store. I live in the neighborhood, and I can't pass by without stopping and buying cards to have on hand. I always find the perfect card and they have a great selection of cute baby gifts, too. I do wish they had a more extensive gift wrapping selection though.
In all sweetness, LOLA kicks ass! I love this joint! Perfect for all your stationary needs and beyond! Pens, mugs, stamps, stickers, silkscreen cards, onesies for teeny lil' babies, blankets, candles, gift wrap, baggies, planners, invitations... Stop me, 'cus the list goes on forever!! They have Kate Spade items, which are really cute and gift bags with furry handles and a whole bunch of other random stuff that most guys would probably consider a ton of "junk", but it's nestled in North Beach and is super laid-back and way less obnoxious than a warehouse like Party City or a huge bookstore.
And I found the most hilarious card here. Ever.

This little place is HEAVEN for little stationery trinkets, baby clothes that carry some kitch with the oo and ah, and a great selection of cards for every occassion in a friendly atmosphere.
One of my favorite "indulgence" places in North Beach.
This is our favorite store for cards. They also have cute little gifty items, pretty stationary, notebooks and funny baby t-shirts. One stop shopping in a cool and friendly neighborhood atmosphere. Everything you want and nothing you don't.

Totally cute little stationary shop. The BF and I wandered around for a while today scoping out the cards and other cute stuff. The card selection wasn't huge but it was eclectic and the stationary sets had some great designs on them.
Big bonus points for having something that the BF really liked: a baby onesie that said "my dad's a geek".
I wasn't even sure if it was open since every other Ghiardelli Square shop had it's door open but Lola's was closed. Though the stuff was definitely 5 stars, the ambieance left something to be desired - just kind of plain and boring with no music.
I visited and loved their Ghiradelli Square location, so it was inevitable that I would eventually make my way over to their namesake location. And it is every bit as delightful and wonderful, if not more.
With plenty of witty, humourous, and/or meaningful cards to peruse, I decided to take the sporadic approach, wandering the store in multipe figure eights, picking up whatever card happened to catch my eye on that round. And oh the sights to behold! I found myself chuckling on quite a few occasions, and the bulk of those cards just *had* to be shared with my card store companions.
I left with a Naughty Betty "Happy Birthday to my most Fabulous Gay Friend" birthday card. Interestingly enough, I only just realized, upon looking up the card on the internet for the sake of this review, that it's a birthday card. Somehow, I missed the interior greeting and thought it was blank. And sent it off. To a recipient whose birthday is not for another few months. Oops. But it's still a perfectly appropriate card, and therefore I'm sure I will be forgiven.
I also bought a pack of 6 "You're Welcome" cards (http://www.uncookedlan...). I've been searching for these my whole life!!
The lovely individuals who work here are also great! The woman who rang me up was super friendly and happy and great. Yay.

Love this store. They have the cutest cards, stationery, invitations, and small gifts. I went to Lola looking for a new day planner for 2008. I got the cutest Kate Spade planner, I was so delighted. The lady who worked there was really friendly and helpful. This store is so unique and definitely stylish.

I bought some v. cute and unique cards to send out of valentine's day and love the stationary I found.
I do wish that there was a little bit larger selection of sationary packs.
although I am very tempted to get some personalized sationary.
The gril behind the register was very sweet and I loved how hearing her have a converstion with a guy from a few stores down wo brought her coffee gave the whole shopping experience a neighborhood feel.
Such a cute selection of cards & gifts! The staff is very helpful, too.

I get excited in stores like Lola.
This is a place of quality gifts. The card selection always makes me laugh and sigh. I want every candle in that place, but unfortunately I only give and get them as gifts. They are a little pricey for a scented candle. The baby booty's and clothes are adorable and soft blankets that I use for myself. Hmmm... they also have cute wrapping and gift bags. But best of all when you want to pay $5 for a blank greeting card, come here!
Just a reminder, being that this is my favorite gift stop, my birthday is coming up in October. Note that my friends!

Love this shop. And the blonde haired lady who usually works here is really cool and funny. They're all really cool and nice, actually.
Some of the cards have cracked me up so bad I had to buy them even though I had no one to send them to. They didn't get upset (or call police) when I made an ass of myself laughing hysterically at a card with an alien on it (you had to be there, it is really funny). they didn't even look at me funny when I came up to pay for it, tears running down my face.
I got my grandmother a photo album here. It was pretty, just the right size, and unique.
Check out their cards by the cardmaker "Papaya." They are the most beautiful cards.
This is the only place I shop for cards, or for the "Wheel of Responsibility" for my brother and sister-in-law, who just became parents (god help them).
In sum: Beautiful cards. Hilarious "make you laugh so hard you cry" cards. Sympathy cards for your pets (which came in handy far too many times recently, unfortunately). All kinds of cards. Beautiful gifts, funny gifts, unique gifts, and cool employees.

The world needs more shops as creative and fun as this one. One visit here will get you off your laptops and buying stationery for personal correspondence once again--that's right: real pen and paper! I just met Melinda today when I walked in to buy a journal, and she was very friendly and helpful. Their card and stationery selections are enormous. I'll be back for sure, and I'm especially excited about slowly purchasing their entire inventory of Russell+Hazel products.

Lola has been one of my favorite stores in North Beach for a long time. They have stuff there I would love to buy even though I don't need it. And I would but I have no money.
Anyway, Lola has the greatest selection of thank you, get well, happy anniversary and what-ever-else-you-can-think-of cards. They're not your crappy Hallmark/Walgreens variety. No. These are cards you want to buy and just keep cuz they're so cool, or they just make you feel happy. They also have a bunch of other stuff that's way over priced but cool to look at anyway.
On the useful side of the spectrum, Lola's used to offer a great selection of notebooks: spiral bound, not spiral bound, cool graphics on the cover, small, over sized, lined and not. But on a recent visit I sadly realized that they had done away with most of their note books. Why? I dunno. To make space for over priced stuff that's only good to look at, I guess. They still carry the mole skins, but I'm over those.
Doggies welcome

i love their cards, and the price is not too bad either!
Fantastic selection of unique cards and fun little things for gifts. They have this great onesie that has a picture of the iPod click-wheel and says "I Poo'd." Someone have a baby already so I can buy this for you! Very friendly yet non-intrusive staff. This is the kind of little shop where you just want to poke around without someone breathing down your neck.
Definitely check it out!

There are tons of stationery stores in San Francisco - but I've been shopping at Lola for years, because they always have such a great collection of stuff! Favorite items: Jordi Labanda spiral notebooks with oh-so-chic cartoons (girl on a Vespa, girl singing karaoke, girlfriends sitting around chatting), moleskin day planners, baby onesies with cheeky sayings on them, and all the funky and funny cards. They do custom invitations/announcements too. One of the best locally owned boutiques in North Beach.

So much cuteness in such a small place. I walked by it once at night after it's closed and saw the cutest iPood onesie on the window. It was perfect as a gift for a friend who's expecting a baby girl. So I vowed to come back sometime later, hopefully before the baby's born. Because god knows I hate driving to the city.
So anyway, I finally went back today and got the onesie, plus another one that says "I might barf". I spent about $55 for 2 onesies plus a card.
Make sure you know what you're getting before setting foot in this store or you might be tempted to buy stuff you don't actually need just because they're cute. Seriously, I was having a hard time not to buy all the other onesies besides the iPood one.
But all this baby stuff still doesn't convince me to have a baby of my own though. It's fun dressing them up, but I don't think I can handle my own. I think I'll just get another dog or something.

Ah, my favorite little card store. When you feel like you've seen and sent every card at Papyrus, head to Lola. Unique cards for all occasions, including ones that require a smart-ass remark or two, can be found here, as well as great baby gifts, stationery, and unique gift wrap. And the people who work here are so damn nice!

Lola and her tempting walls covered with cards - each one eliciting an emotional response greater than the card before. Funny dogs, heart-felt love poems, and simply stated words of celebration. That's the beauty in the business of correspondence: rarely does one take the time to write feelings of hate or hurt or spite. People write to one another out of passion, care, and consideration. Well wishing, a simple hello, or declarations of love... and they all start here... at Lola.
Imagine if you could catch all of the happy thoughts that Lola's four walls encompass, bottle them up and share them with someone that needs it. Every time someone picks up a card and smiles because it reminds them of someone they love, it ignites something. Something positive and wonderful that I wish I could hold. Before computers and the instant gratification of email and instant messaging, people would actually write to one another. When was the last time you picked up a real pen and put it to a fresh piece of stationary or run you tongue across a real envelope? It makes you think a bit, doesn't it?
The way we correspond with one another has completely changed the feel of our communication. Thank you is shortened to "thx", and most adjectives and feelings lost along the way. Lola adds warmth and thought to an otherwise basic message by simply adding paper. It's incredible.

Lola was like a breath of fresh air when they opened - far from the cloying racks of Hallmark cards around the corner at Walgreen's. Last minute birthday or shower? Lola has the card, the small gift and the wrapping for you! Be it bold and irreverent or heartfelt & philosophical, there's a card for you! Beautiful blank cards for you to fill in or funny cards to make someone laugh, they've got them.
Favorite gifts include the cutest baby tee shirts and fun little books on things like how to knit your first scarf or cook a yummy dinner while getting used to being parents, lightly scented candles and wonderful little photo albums by Kohlo with old fashioned scrapbook paper and ribbon ties you can fill with pix to give as presents to remember.
I even ordered online and they mailed me my order the same day!
Great selection of fabulous cards-- love stopping in here to just stock up and send them to friends for holidays or no reason at all!

I ADORE shops like this. In fact, this may be my new favorite place to shop for cards.
In this small shop, Lola has a great assortment of cards and can custom-print stationary or announcements for any occasion. There are is a very good selection of letterpress cards which are my personal kryptonite. Oh letterpress cards, how cute and sweet you are! Delicious and sweet like a cupcake! Sorry, having a moment....anyway, in addition to great cards, Lola carries some really fun baby gifts (one in particular that comes in a box ready to post...brilliant!) as well as all of the Moleskine products and a nice variety of Kate Spade stationary and desk supplies. Me likey.
Oh gosh, I almost forgot that they carry Russel & Hazel products here - it was my first introduction to them today. Great notebooks, binders and office products with a modern touch - made me feel organized just by looking at them.
Exercising the most restraint possible, I walked out with a new set of letterpress note cards by Carrot & Stick (they have the best selection from this company that I have seen yet), 5 cards, and a book.
If you like cute, clever and beautiful cards, Lola is worth a visit. Valentine's Day is coming up, and if you're like me, you haven't quite finished all of your Christmas thank you notes (please don't tell my Mom)....

I got my wedding inviations from Lola and I've loved them ever since. It's true that the owners are awesome. I went in there once during some North Beach fesitval event time and he offered me a beer. Now, anywhere that can sell you great wedding invitations and offer you a beer at the same time is, in my book, faaaaabulous. Not that beer's on tap all the time--I think it was just that one event, but I was and remain impressed by the general happy, mellow, friendly vibe of Lola.
The owner's mother-in-law was visiting when I went in to look at invitations and she became my fun second-opinion shopper. My invitations turned out great and I felt super-happy with both the product and the down-to-earth quality service. Now I go back there from time to time to pick up cards and great baby gifts, like baby shirts with DJ equipment prints. We got a shirt for our nephew in the Bronx and now his parents are like, "when are you going to get us another one of those baby hoodies with the headsets?" lola. keeps the family happy.
Such a cute store. The family that owns it is adorable and so nice and helpful when you go in. Such a great selection of baby gifts and great stationary. The only store of its kind in North Beach!
This is where my friend found my crazy one of a kind wallet. EVERYONE asks me where I got it and I secretly don't want to tell them. Very fun, very unique place. You can find all sorts of gifts and stationary.

Some of the prettiest cards I've ever seen! Always something to match that special someone! I LOVE the t-shirts for babies, that say "barf", tax write off", and more. You can also get them special ordered for adults. The stationary is so pretty to look at, a great place for one of a kind gifts for anyone.
Nice assortment of cards, and other sundries. Came in with friends and found a bunch of things I wasn't looking for LOL
really cute unique baby gifts. mostly adorable clothes and al the classic children stories. pricey.
I'm starting to think i should Review Alcoholics Anonymous since most (ok ALL) of my reviews have something to do with me drinking. Or Drinking & Shopping. This is the case with my most recent hop into Lola as well. In fact, they we're closing, door locked & money out of the register kinda closing yet somehow I convinced them to let me in & buy a peanut outfit for my friends son. we call him peanut, he's gonna call us drunk. Thanks Lola for putting up with me.
