The Logan
I loved this place, yes it was a bit run down, yes it smelled old. But it was a good cheap place to see a movie.
So they are remodling. Good News for some. I just worry with all this money invested, our cheap local theater will become a thing of the past. -

This is a historic place in the Logan Square area. Yest the place smells funky and the floors are sticky, but the prices and the friendliness of the staff make up for it.
The renovations should also help the conditions. I just hope that the price does not change much. -

Logan theatre is a classic part of the Logan Square area.
The movie prices are very affordable ($5 for a premium feature/$4 for regular feature).
Make sure to bring cash with you if you're going to the theatre because credit cards are NOT accepted.
This is obviously a neighborhood favorite and feels more personal than a large scale chain theatre.
The concessions are fairly pricey, however. It also could stand a bit more of cleaning.
HOWEVER, it is currently being remodeled! So maybe we can expect some improvement in the upkeep department. I just hope that the ticket prices stay the same!
The staff? Very friendly and courteous. The location? Ideal...it's directly off the blue line stop on Milwaukee. This is a unique and well priced experience! It's definitely worth your time. You can keep yourself updated on the status of the remodeling of the theatre by keeping up with them on Facebook or Twitter.
Logan Theatre, I look forward to visiting you again after your little makeover! -

Is this place CLOSED? They've been "remodeling" for like 6 months now, and I haven't seen any sign of this place re-opening. I'm totally missing this place! COME BACK!!! :/

This should be another 5 star review because they showed Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, Clerks, and Scarface, on a weekend late night tip.
HOWEVER, this is a punishment review because even after they said the screening the night before looked good, and they were showing Casablanca in the correct form.... the mofo'n picture was completely chopped at the bottom. !!! In one of the most climatic scenes, you couldn't even see what was happening!
And the sound was completely messed up. Some of the classic lines were inaudible, and then at other times the sound was way too loud.
This really pissed me off. This was a treat for myself, and I took my boyfriend, who hasn't seen Casablanca and loves Bogart.
Unfortunately, this movie does not have a special place in his heart because it was a pain to sit through this screening.
Damn you, Logan Theater. Don't f up the classics.Listed in: Logan Square spots, Entertainment All Stars!

Cute place. Hella cheap tickets. Hella gross theater. It smelled like pee so we moved to the other side of the theater, and it smelled a little less like pee.
I'm definitely going again because movie prices are ridiculous these days and I can bike there, but it did just feel a bit filthy. -

I've become a fan of the Logan Theatre. With big chain movie theater ticket prices continuing to soar, seeing movies at the Logan makes things easier on the wallet. Saw Cowboys and Aliens here not too long after it was out in the big chain movie theaters.
The Logan Theatre has all of the charming and quaint characteristics of a local movie spot. It has a classic feel within the theater. The staff is very courteous and are great multi-taskers! (unlike much of the staff at most movieplexes that move like they've got lead in their pants and carry facial expressions that couldn't say more how much they dislike their job.) I like small theaters like Logan because you can feel the history within the walls. During the last visit, we saw a couple of signs up with information about a remodel. The basic gist that I got from the info was that they were going to update the theater, but keep the classic feel of it. I also hear that they are hoping to make it a place for local artists to show their movies. What a great movement to support local art.
The theater has some weak chairs and I was afraid I was going fall out of mine. They also don't have cup holders so if you purchase a drink from the concession stand, be prepared to hold it for the duration of your movie or put it on the floor. I believe the above will be solved when they bring in the new seats they have planned for in the remodel. They also don't have stadium seating, but that's part of the charm of this neighborhood theater. No biggie.
The bathrooms are very clean; much cleaner than big chain movieplexes. Another great feature is that they don't show many pre-movie trailers (if any) and you get right to watching your movie.
Overall, I was impressed by my experience at the Logan Theatre as I was expecting a run-down theater for the great price they were charging for movie viewing. Though the experience is different between the Logan and other big chain movie theaters, the Logan can stand up to competition in my book. I hope they stick around for a while and I can't wait to see the remodel. -

Seats are dirty and slimey and the place smells like piss and popcorn.
Sorry logan, I'll spend the extra $6-7 so I won't have to deal with the nastiness. -
Review from Terri F.

Went to see Pulp Fiction on the big screen. Kudos for the theater shelling out a couple of hundred for a dirty print (lots of base/emulsion scratches) but it just added to the nostalgic feel.
However, that theater (#4) smelled like piss and flies. It was just awful.
The seats were damp... fucking damp from god knows what, floor was sticky with probably... yeah you know what, and the theater just reeked with urine. A patron ran down the aisle to find a seat and nebulous clouds of urine odor wafted through the air. It was disgusting. I sat with my nose in my shirt through the majority of the screening.
Getting new seats is NOT going to make the theater smell better. Sure they probably have caked on urine and swamp ass but they need to open all the doors, get some industrial fans, and air those theaters out. Plus power-wash the soundfolds with febreze and antibacterial soap because those walls probably have absorbed years of disgusting odors.
I'd rather pay the same price for a movie ($5-6.50) at the New 400 Theater because at least the give a damn about their patrons and don't allow homeless people to "chill" in the lobby.
Oh, and the "fresh" popcorn was stale. -

Cheapest tickets in town, almost always something worth seeing, good showtimes, and the popcorn salt is free.
So what if the seats themselves are terrible. I'm glad this place still has some authenticity and charm. There are plenty of identical cineplexes and a few good places for independent and foreign film already. The Logan is unique, and heck of a good time. Hope they don't change too much when they remodel. -

I like the Logan Theatre. Yes, the seats are a little uncomfortable, and there's a distinct odor to the place--but I swear, once your through the previews, you'll get used to the smell and can watch the movie. There's a certain charm to this kind of hole in the wall movie theater--it was a luxury theater, you'd be paying higher ticket prices.
This is a perfect place to go to that movie that you meant to see on opening weekend, but now it's a month later and already out of the bigger theaters. Plus, the cheap ticket prices, and great restaurant strip right outside the theater make it a cheap and convenient date night. -

$4 movies. Alright, alright.
You might want to hit up Walgreen's on your way because the candy selection is lame but they've got soda and popcorn. And there's a McD's right across the street if you wanna sneak in a McDub or whatever.
You're not gonna hear me complaining about this spot. -

alright, let's break it up:
CONS:
-one time, the theatre i was in smelled faintly of urine
-no credit cards accepted
-overly priced food and drinks
-uncomfortable seats
PROS:
-$4 tix
-street parking
yeah there are more cons than pros for me, but since i'm living in the suburbs surrounded by new theatres and imax and such, it's nice to know that theatres like this still exist..
p.s. movies start immediately. there are no trailers, so don't be late. -

The good: $4 movies and damn tasty popcorn.
The bad: Everything else.
While I can 100% appreciate dirt cheap movies, I also don't mind paying a bit extra for a more comfortable move going experience. Could the seats BE any more uncomfortable? Went to the Logan Theatre for the first time to watch Super 8. I was weary due to all the reviews mentioning the urine smell, but I am happy to report that theater 2 does not smell like urine.
The seats are cramped and the screens are small, but for $20 for two movie tickets, a large popcorn and a large drink you can't beat it.
I will say that the bathrooms are questionable and there was a vomit-like smell outside the bathrooms. I didn't stay long enough to investigate the source of the smell.
Regardless, I would definitely go back to check out another movie.
I recommend parking in the pay lot (uses the city parking meter system) around the corner at Emmett and Kedzie. It'll save you time by not having to drive around looking for parking. -

Logan Theatre used to be one of my favorite movie theaters. Their price is unbeatable, the popcorn was delicious, and the greeter at the entrance was always dressed so nicely! It was always a fun experience.
Unfortunately, the place hasn't been the same the last few times I've been there. The prices for snacks was absurd, the place smelled like pee, and there was the most annoying clicking sound throughout the ENTIRE movie. Even when the sound would stop for five minutes all I could think about was when it would come back...and it did come back.
Oh, and the man that took my ticket stub was in the process of eating a chicken wing.
Logan is still a great place to catch a movie when you don't feel like paying $12 for a ticket and you're okay with seeing a movie that's been out for a while in a small theater. Despite its flaws, I know I'll be back. -
Review from Melanie S.

Yes, it is actually possible to pay less than $5 to go see a movie.
Logan Theater offers a choice of 4 movies, most of which have been released for awhile, but if you're a procrastinator like I am, you'll appreciate still being able to see "The Social Network" in a theater, even though it's already available on Netflix.
Tickets cost just $4, and snacks are cheaper too, so it's budget-friendly, something we all appreciate these days.
The seats are not the most comfortable and are in no way stadium seating, and you don't get Dolby surround-sound, but you're also not paying $12 to see a movie either. I'm willing to forgo such luxuries in order to save some money, plus it's nice to support a local business.
Street parking wasn't too difficult either, even on a Saturday night.Listed in: It's all good in my 'hood

Reminds me of going to the Glen Theater in Glen Ellyn as a lil child. Total old school dump theater, but the projector works, they have orange crush, candy MACHINES, cool old ass urinals, the theater is SO DARK(really good for scary scaries), and the movies are ridic cheap.
I know there are obvious reasons to think this place is a dump, but sometimes dumps are cool. -

I am a huge fan of this place. It's got a comforting vintage charm, and since I live only a few blocks away, it's super convenient! Sure, it lacks the creature comforts of newer theaters, but the lumpy seats are well worth the $4 tickets.
*A note on the ticket price: Within the past year, I've seen the tickets jump from $3 to $4. Oh well, right?. However, now they are now charging $5 for certain movies considered "Premium." These seem to be the more popular films that are currently playing in other theaters. I just hope the prices don't keep going up.Comment from Jennifer P. of Logan Theatre 3/3/2011

I'm dutch, so a $4 movie is almost automatically going to get 4-stars from me. That said, I was pretty impressed with the Logan Theatre, here's why:
--I've worked out several times at the Cardinal Fitness in Logan Square, and, on one of these visits, my car window was smashed and my laptop was stolen. Since then, I've been somewhat skeptical about this neighborhood. Pulling up to the theatre, I felt perfectly safe and realized that this area is not nearly as "sketchy" as I had made it out to be.
--I went with my girlfriend late on a Sunday night, and there were maybe 10 people in the show. I was super worried about EVERYone wanting to take advantage of such a good deal--don't worry, you'll be fine.
--The seats suck, the theatres are small, the film projector makes a slight clicking noise, but, it's a freakin' $4 movie--can you really expect IMAX and plush velvet seats?
I am THRILLED with my discovery of this little theatre, and plan on taking advantage in the near future! -
Review from Raul b.
I love this theater and have been coming here for years to see second run movies. They used to have ushers with bow ties but I think the new owner got rid of them, he should totally bring them back. So the movies don't start on time and yes the seats can be super uncomfortable and maybe sometimes they don't always clean after each screening but damn is it cheap and its still charming. The washrooms are a trip as they are still 1920 style were you still have to pull the chain to flush.
Another thing, cheap popcorn and snacks and the popcorn tastes way better than the big box theaters. Also in all the years I have come here I never had a problem with somebody being loud or the cell phone going off during a movie as I have at the big theaters.
Logan Theater please don't ever change, ever.Listed in: Theaters

Things I like: $4 movie tickets, the theater is walkable from our house or the blue line, movies I'm on the fence about seeing I can wait to arrive here and then if they suck not feel too bad about losing $4.
Things I don't like: the seats are pretty uncomfortable, the snacks are pricey, and they just increased their tickets to $5 after a certain time in the afternoon. They only accept cash.
I get keeping costs low by not taking plastic and following bigger newer theaters with the ridiculously priced snacks. As a poor grad student I appreciate their existence, since you can still get two people into a movie for $10, but $5 is starting to get up there for what you get at the Logan. It is nice that they seem to get newer movies than other "second run" theaters I have frequented in the past. Living near this place is definitely still a win.Comment from Jennifer P. of Logan Theatre 4/30/2011

Just got back from the movies here. Their Theater #4 SMELLED LIKE PISS from front to back. I'm talking about the rank, gin fueled, bum piss that gets caked onto L train seats. The movies could be free for all I care and that wouldn't excuse the smell in that theater. A big disappointment, especially since all the other 2nd run theaters are long gone.

I don't have a problem with the Logan Theatre. It has character. It's not sterile and overflowing with consumerism like other theaters. Plus, it's a budget theater. A few bucks to see a movie and I can sneak in my own popcorn, like my mom used to do when I was a kid? I'm a fan.
I got to see Hot Tub Time Machine without risking the embarrassment of running into someone I know and the theater was pretty empty when I saw it, so I could laugh inappropriately. Win! -

I have very Fond Memories of the Logan Theater...
I grew up in Logan Square and this was my Theater, I lived 3
blocks away...
Back in the 70's when I was like 13 my friend Joe Brabec was an
usher at the Logan Theater and he used to sneak me in to all the
"R" rated movies..
And R rated movies meant 17 and over... yeah right...
I was a Rebel even back then..:)
My Mom would not have been happy ..:(
Anyway, today I was in the area and decided to visit the Logan Theater
once again, talk about a trip down memory lane...
This Theaters Structure still stands the same as it did when I was
a kid, however, now the ticket booth as you enter the theater is empty and you pay for your ticket inside at the Candy Counter...
But the interior is basically the same as I remember except it used to be
one big theater and now it has been divided into 4 much smaller cinemas...
I swear the seats are still the same ones that I sat in with my Ex-Husband
Michael when we first started dating...
The bathrooms are still the same, kindda spooky after all these years
that so much is still the same...
Ticket admission was only $4.00, well worth it for the Really Scary
Movie called "Insidious" that I saw today...
I Love Horror Movies and Insidious was downright scary...:)
Concessions are limited, the Logan still has some of the best Popcorn around and a small candy selection as well.
I also found out today that the Logan Theater is now under new Management, since last September..
Also, no plastic is taken here.. Bring Cash! The good thing is you won't need alot of cash.. I like that..:)
Up until then the same family had run the theater since the 70's...
So, nice memories for me today, a total blast from the past...
And to Joe Brabec, my very cool friend...
Hope you're doing well...
Those were the days.....:) -

Thought I'd blown my chance to see Scott Pilgrim until I realized, hey, I can still see it here, and for much less! I agree that the seats are terrible and the angle is not good, and I generally do not like it when they put the aisle in the middle of the theater, ensuring that no one gets the perfect seat. The truth is, you could get all of these "features" in many full-price small suburban theaters (at least in California).
The thing I was most paranoid about was the projection, as the bargain joint back in Moreno Valley, CA (now closed) used to air films out of focus or mis-framed (boom mike visible, mouths, in close up, not visible, etc). There was no such trouble here. True, they didn't block off the left and right sides of the screen to fit the aspect ratio (if you don't know what this means, skip it, you're a happier person this way) and there were a few blemishes, but unfortunately this can happen anywhere.
I will also say that I didn't notice the smell, although I'm always a bit congested due to allergies. I also cannot comment on the patrons as there were none! Ouch, it really was a theatrical flop (however good), wasn't it? -

I'm a lover of dive bars, and Logan Theater is a total dive theater. But in a good way. Sure, it smells a little musty, and the seats are old and creaky, but it's a great place to catch current movies at a fraction of the price. Even the concessions are affordable.
They have 4 flicks at a time, and change the line-up each Friday. And the best part is: no trailers, so you don't wait 20 minutes for the movie to start.
If you want a pristine, state-of-the art theater, go somewhere else. If you want to see a good movie at a fair price, come to Logan Theater. -
Review from Shonda D.
The theater is not the state of the art monstrosities we have become accustomed to. It's not lavish or comfy and it's a little creaky.
But, here's the thing...you can watch a movie for $4! Today, my friend and I went to see Salt and we paid $8 for the two of us. I thought for sure it was an error...NOT. I don't mind the lack luster appeal, as I was able to park for free and see a kick ass movie for $4. I will return. -

The seats are sometimes uncomfortable, and the place often smells a little funny, but once you get there you realize none of that actually matters because you're only paying four bucks to see a movie - without any trailers, even!
Before the movies, they pipe some classy jazz music over the PA, then it's straight to the feature. Awesome! This place is a great way to kill an afternoon/evening and catch some movies you might have missed on their first run. -

Super cheap. Why should I complain?
I grew up in Logan Square (16 years), and have been going to this theatre since I was about 6. The place hasn't changed at all. Hell, I don't think it's changed since my parents went in the eighties! But even though it's nostalgic, kinda shithole-y, and some think it's "OMG so cool and old-skool", I still go for the cheapness, the nostalgia and the fact that I moved back to Logan Square and live near it again ;p. -

SMELLED LIKE PISS & ABSOLUTELY FILTHY. I took my kid to see Cars 2 at the Logan Theater yesterday and I couldn't get over how nasty this place was. Walking into the theatre you are punched in the face with the terrible stench. If it wasn't for the excitement of my 3 year old, there was no way I would have stayed. As we walked down the aisle the smell just got worse. Thank goodness it was not crowded because it took 4 tries to find seats that weren't broken. Sure the art deco light fixtures are pretty, but they are absolutely encrusted with grime. I have no idea what would make a floor that slimey but thinking about it only made my skin crawl. I couldn't bring myself to examine the seats, I felt I was better off not knowing.
Don't get me wrong, I love vintage charm more than most people, and I wasn't expecting a brand spankin' new theater. What I do expect is tidy, and this place isn't. Clean doesn't cost much.
While my bright eyed child was enjoying Lightning McQueen, my nose was hidden in my shirt and all I could think about was "I need a shower"
NEVER AGAIN. ICK. -

I procrastinated on seeing a movie that I really wanted to see, and by the time my vacation rolled around, Logan Theatre was my only option. Street parking was plentiful when I arrived, I ended up right across the street. The ticket was $4 and popcorn/pop was another 6 bucks. Great prices!
This is definitely not a a modern, high-class theater. The screen was small and filled with tons of scratches, the seats were uncomfortable and the sound mediocre.
Don't save your action/visually stunning movies for this theater - they'd lose a lot of impact on the low-quality screen. I'd go here again as a last resort, but honestly, I think it's worth an extra buck or two to catch a matinee somewhere else. -

This is first-rate-second-run theater.
In a city that used to be teeming with cool theaters there are only a few left left. From the plaid bathroom floor - to the gold neck chains worn outside the shirts and ties of the men who work there - this is the joint.
Cheap eats - comfortable seats. Cheap tickets!
Get there on time because they don't show previews.
See the movies that you don't necessarily want your friends to know you saw -and do it for about the price of a movie rental! -

LOVE this theater! $4 for a ticket, $10 for a large soda and large popcorn (with free refills!!), good sound and picture, no annoying "commercials" before the film is shown, friendly staff, clean bathrooms..... It's great! The seats weren't the most comfortable, but they could have been worse. I'll be going back again, that's for certain!

$4 for a movie is a pretty good deal if you want to see a late first (or 2nd run). The sound system is surprisingly good and doesn't sound like garbage like more 2nd run theaters. The picture is pretty good as well. The seats could use a rehab. The concession pricing isn't terrible but isn't great. I wish they let you dispense your own butter. Overall a good place to see a movie. As good of an experience than most of the first run theaters in Chicago.

Chicago, IL
For a quick escape and a cheap movie night, Logan Theatre is great. The vintage building probably has not been updated, renovated or touched since the doors initially opened, but the dated wallpaper, mirrored walls, and spacious bathrooms provide a unique charm. The theater plays current flicks (or movies that have been out for a few weeks) for $5 or less, depending on the popularity, and is a cash only theater. This includes concessions, where they freshly pop their popcorn and provide free refills on large sodas and popcorn. The seats are definitely old and not as squishy as in the more modern theaters, however the theaters are rarely full so you are able to spread out a bit more for additional comfort.
