Could really do without the commentary at this theatre - I don't care how you "told that bitch not to go in that room" or how that romantic "dude is so gay." Your FACE is gay.

Overall it's a huge, clean theatre that is centrally located which is perfect for meeting up with friends from around the city. Plus you can head out to a bar or restaurant nearby once the movie ends.

But honestly, if it's opening night you're probably throwing your money away because the crowds can be ridiculous and the rudeness of idiot sticks in a sold-out theatre spoil what could have been a good movie. When I spend my night resisting the urge to stab the eyes of the kid behind me with a plastic straw and clogging his throat with milk duds - the night is kind of ruined.

Long story short. Good theatre. Ass hat audience. If it's a new movie head somewhere like Fenway. If your movie has been in theatres for a while, no problem heading over to the Common. Douchies have already moved on to Gypsy Bar.

So aside from being a little overpriced (what can you expect in downtown Boston?) and I find that they consistently have the volume on the movies a little too low, I have never had any major complaints about this theater. That changed tonight. I was sitting with my friend enjoying the movie we were watching when I felt something move on my foot. No big deal, right? Probably just someones old popcorn bag that got pushed down around my foot. But wait! Out of the corner of my eye I see something moving down the stairs (I was in the aisle seat) -- then I double take. It was a dirty, disgusting mouse.

Obviously my friend and I up and left because really, a mouse ran over my foot and as lame as it is, I have a totally irrational fear of mice. We told the manager and they gave us free passes (gee thanks, I'll be sure to come visit Mickey again this weekend...) and the explanation for the mouse was 'well, it happens. we have an exterminator come in twice a week.' Huh? Twice a week and you still have mice? Perhaps they should consider upping the exterminators visits to a few more times a week if there are mice running over patrons feet during films!

Overpriced.

But seriously, a place that costs this much should be in better repair, particularly the self-serve movie ticket kiosks. It was Friday night, opening night of a fairly big movie, and there were four kiosks with lines extending from each one. As I looked over to see what the hold-up was, I saw that the credit card slidey thingies weren't detecting the metal strips, no matter which way you turn the card. It took us a couple tries, but we got it. Others weren't so lucky and had to get to the back of the box office line.

I gotta say, though, theater 2 was humongous. That was nice.

If this theater weren't so darn T-accessible, I wouldn't have given my business to them. Sigh.

3 things I like about this place:

1) It's no independent movie theater with uncomfortable seating.

2) If your movie is going to go past the last T train, they'll announce that before the movie begins so that you're aware.  Good stuff!

3) As with most other theaters, the largest size popcorn has free refills.

This is the nicest movie theater I've ever been in! When movies are released I always hope that this Loews was showing that particular movie so I won't have to go elsewhere.

The decor is nice (for a movie theater) and the movie quotes painted on the walls are great. It's fun to quiz friends and see if we can guess what movie the quote is from. Nerdy ... I know.

It has been years since I've been to a theater where they have a cart service that actually serves snacks and beverages inside the theater before the movie. Smart move! I'd always run past the candy counters trying to avoid looking so I wouldn't spend $20 on popcorn and a soda. When they come in just before the movie to tempt you yet again with their overpriced snacks - I dare you to say no! They sell it for less than they do out at the concession stands too, so at least if you decide to give in you're spending slightly less money. They even take credit cards.

On the one hand I wish they did that in Seattle - but on the other hand I'm glad they don't. I really don't need to eat an entire box of Dots, but thanks.

Had a downtown walk the park - see a movie - shop a little bit - with my wonderful better half day. The traditional movie and dinner came into a play, so Loews we went. This theatre is the Disney land of movie theatre's. I have to be honest and say I prefer a Brattle over a Loews, but for what it is they do a damn good job. Overall and especially for the mass of people I must say the place is neat, clean, mobbed with people and a pretty fun time. We do sneak in snacks in my wife's bag to avoid the concessions stand so we can still make the car payments that month. For a big theatre I recommend checking this place out. Sometimes it can be crowded but the overwhelming size of this place is pretty facinating. We enjoyed ourselves. I recommend this establishment at least once for probably the grandest movie going experience in Boston. For something a little more intimate maybe check out the Brattle in Cambridge, or The Coolidge in Brookline.

I think I have found my new favorite movie theater. The theaters are really big and they play most (if not all) of the current movies. I love the stadium seating that allows me to see the screen even if a really tall person is sitting in front of me, which is a really big deal for a very short person like myself! I also love that I can get to the theater from the T, but of course being in the middle of Boston, the prices are a little higher.

The popcorn definitely deserves to be mentioned because it is much better than other theaters I have been to recently. As a kid, the best part of going to the movies was the buttery popcorn, but many places have been lacking in their popcorn quality...well not Loews! They even have a butter and salt station so that you can put on as much or as little as you like. The best deal is getting the kids pack which comes with a small popcorn, small drink, and a fruit snack all for the price of a medium popcorn.

Loews Boston Common how I love thee...

On the one hand, the prices and the crowds keep me from giving it that fifth star, but to be fair, the prices are comparable to other theaters and when you put a cinema on Boston Common, what do you expect?

This place is HUGE. I am always disappointed when I get one of the theaters on the first floor because I LOVE the decor upstairs. The ceiling is painted with movie quotes and they have old school posters still hanging (Titanic, Batman, Aladdin, etc.). It's wonderful!

The seats here are comfortable, even with tall people in front you can still see, they always start on time, and the staff is very friendly. I tend to sneak in food in my purse *don't tell!!* because of the prices but if you have the extra cash and forget to pack snacks they have a decent selection, what you'd expect from a theater.

My only advice is to try to get tickets well ahead of time on busy nights/new movies.

Let me tell you about a phenomenon I've noticed at the Boston Common Lowe's.

Never have I experienced a theater in which, during EVERY screening of EVERY movie, you are guaranteed to see zombies wander in at random times during the movie, mill about, and sit down for some random amount of time, just to get up and lumber out seemingly arbitrarily (battle scenes, climaxes, expositions, 10 minutes before it's over...doesn't matter).

Now, I have nothing against someone who wants to stick it to the man by getting a free flick (back when I was a kid, it took a lot more cunning, by the way), but I'm just taken aback by the amount of zombie behavior that I just don't understand (the wandering around, stumbling in, walking out randomly, sometimes coming back in 45 minutes later, standing on the sides looking around or entranced by the light).  People will even come in and watch chunks of 3D movies without 3D glasses...chilling.

These aren't even primarily kids or crackheads! I feel like I'm more likely to see a middleaged woman in a pantsuit, some yuppie guy from the financial district, or an old man who I'm sure has been holding the same bag of popcorn all day.

Overall, the zombies are a little annoying, but don't hurt the movie experience too much...the crowdedness and loudness of the crowds do that.........oh, and the design of (at least most of) the theaters is such that the back row seats are a few feet below the projectionist window, meaning anyone walking to their seat or choosing to be a wisenheimer will be casting shadows across the whole screen.

Pluses: cool looking theater, relatively comfy seats, megalomania, relative cleanliness...

So I went here by myself a few days ago to see Gamer, but that's not important. It was the first time I've ever been. And I thought it was just great.
Yes stadium seating is awesome. But it's all too common now. What makes the seats here special? You can move the arm rest. This opens a world of possibilities. It's so much easier to make out during a movie this way. Hell, you could even go all the way. Unfortunately since I was by myself I didn't have a partner to try this with. But I did legit lay down through out the entire movie.
I also like how they had classic movie poster and movie quotes everywhere. It was a nice touch.

If you actually want to watch the movie, you can't come to this theater. Its clientele does everything you can possibly do to disrupt the experience aside from childbirth. You'll have  teenagers behind you discussing whether they want to spend the money on whoppers for 15 minutes (but they hang in packs of 40, so you can't mess with them); people on cell phones; and someone chomping on fresh pickles.
If it's summertime and you need the air conditioning, go to this theater. If you actually want to leave knowing any of the dialogue, make sure the movie has subtitles.

1.) Centrally located.
2.) Comfortable seats.
3.) Lots of theaters, resulting in many showtimes and movies.
4.) Better food selection than most theaters.
5.) A funny guy who goes from theater to theater and delivers popcorn and other random candies.
6.) Cheaper and better than the Fenway movie theater.

I come here for matinées and it's great. $6, quiet, and not many people! If I'm going to see a movie, this is the only place I'll go.

This theater has been going downhill as far as how dirty it's been getting. The theater itself is nice with good audio and screens but the floors need to be deep cleaned along with the seats. Location is good as a centralized location to watch a movie with friends. Park in the Commons garage if you are visiting and you can't find street parking.

I've always loved going to movies, but I think it's ridiculously overpriced these days, so I don't go as much as I would probably like.

However, this theater never makes me feel bad about paying $11 to go see a movie.  To me this is what a night at the movies must have been like years ago, when it was a big night out.  These days most of the time people slide in 5 minutes before the movie, sit in the chair for two hours and leave.  But this place makes me feel like I'm getting more for my $11 than just a movie.  It has a great ambience.  There are lots of lights, old movie posters and classic movie quotes lining the walls.  The candy guy comes in a few minutes before the movie with his pushcart of popcorn and a few other items.  The chairs are comfortable and the theaters are usually very clean, especially considering how busy they are.

For a modern movie theater, this one gives you something that other modern theaters lack.  It doesn't compare to the kind of feeling that you get from classic theaters like the Brattle or Coolidge, but it does a great job for a new movie theater.  It's the only theater in the city that I enjoy going to when I want to see a popular film.

The location's great for commuters - right by a T station (Boylston, Green line).  I like that there are some tables and chairs by the main concession area on the 2nd floor.  A great place to wait for the rest of your party.

I don't like how the bathrooms often have at least one stuffed toilet, and a general distasteful aroma in the air...

I don't think I've ever really had a bad experience at this theatre.  They always have good movies playing, and they even throw in an indie now and then, and the place is giant.  So giant, in fact, that they have space for true stadium seating.  Like, even if the person in front of you was wearing a ten-gallon hat, you could probably still have a very clear view of the screen.  And the seats are super comfortable too, which is nice when you're paying $11 for a movie ticket (or $12 if you opted to buy in advance via Fandango).  Sometimes the lines for the bathroom are insanely long, and sometimes the audio quality leaves much to be desired, but overall it's a nice theatre.

The staff is horrible, rude and dumb.  I understand there is no PhD. in concession stand management, but speaking in complete sentences would be nice.  They were rude to my mother.  And I DONT take that lightly.

This location attracts the great unwashed masses, so the phones will ring, the drama will be present, and the smell of cheap Chinese food will make you want to throw up.

The place is huge, pretty clean, and the seats are nice. The decor is tacky, and the escalators, seriously, since when do you need escalators in a movie theater?

Overall, go to Fenway theater.  Skip this one.

Can you say waaaaay over kill?

Okay, so there's nothing about Loews that is explicitly wrong. It's not dirty, the floors aren't sticky, nothing's broken. I didn't visit the bathroom, but I would suspect that they're pretty clean. But does a movie theatre really need to have escalators to get up to the theatres? Seriously, guys?

What it does have working for it is that it's large, has a large selection of movies, and is located right across from the Commons. So, for times that I can't find a specific movie that I want to see out in Cambridge, I'll think about making a trip down here. If I feel that the show is worth the upcharge in ticket prices to see it in a huge freaking megaplex.
But if I have a choice, I'm gonna avoid.

Again, as I said, there's nothing overtly wrong with this place. It's just a wee bit out of control needlessly. And I do feel a bit like I'm selling my soul to corporate America as I take my escalator up to the theatre....At least the seats are comfy!

This movie theatre is huge and shows sell out often. I give it four stars for the location. Loews is my favorite theatre in Boston. During the summer they offer three different prices depending on the time of day. So if you can sneak away and see a movie during your lunch hour, do it!

There are a lot of concession stands which I find so interesting. Although, I haven't found the one that sells Chinese food. Every time I go here the people behind me are always eating Chinese food. Someone, please tell me where the Chinese concession stand is located? The patrons at this theatre are brave, one fellow was walking around (when the lights were still on) with his bag of microwave popcorn. Again, someone please tell me where the microwave is located?!  Rebels. Breaking the law!

With so many screens it would be nice if they showed a few more indie flicks, but I can't complain. I catch the double feature almost every time I go here - I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about. It's one of the only places around that I can do so. Everything else about the place is fine. The prices are especially cheap if you go before noon.

Big - that's the first thought I have upon seeing this place.  Two floors, lots of theaters.  Almost like they should have IMAX, but no luck.  Decent enough place to watch a movie, convenient to public transportation too.  Tickets are on the expensive side, and instead of a general "senior" or "student" discount they have special "nights," which is lame.  I never get food so can't comment on that, but looked about average for a movie theater, which is to say overpriced.  Poor cellphone service inside the theater is actually a good thing!

It's a place to catch the newest movie or blockbuster.  Nothing really special, same as every other big theater in America, so it gets a solid A-OK.

I go here cos it's on my subway line. Whatever. It's expensive ($11!!!), but the screens are big and the prints are rarely all scratched up. The popcorn is slightly above average. It usually doesn't take too long to get from the doorway to my seat. These qualities are almost all of what I ask for in a movie theater.

But to the reviewers who say stuff like that this is a "classic multiplex"- no. This place isn't a classic anything. It's like saying the WalMart SuperCenter is a "classic mom and pop grocery store". There are posters on the wall for random, long-forgotten, never-beloved movies like Backdraft and Treasure Planet. Everything lights up, even if it doesn't need to. There's a freaking escalator, and at least three (maybe four?) concession stands.

The Loews/AMC Boston Common has no character. Luckily, Boston still has quite a few theaters that do. So while I'll make a trip here out of convenience, there's no real love in my heart for this place the way there is for the Coolidge and the Brattle and the Somerville Theater. That's ok with Loews/AMC; it's a strictly business transaction with those folks. But sadly, that's also what is wrong with the world.

How can you not enjoy a place that allows you to see pretty fast changing pictures on a big screen? Ah yes... a movie outing. This place is great because of its location, size of theatres, cleanliness, and number of concession stands. Plus they are close to my office so its a great place to go after work on a friday night. One of my favorite things about this place is that they have this guy who goes into the different theatres with a cart with drinks and snacks. He is really showy and cracks jokes and gives you little facts about the movie/stars. Best yet, he tells you where open seats are so you dont stare aimlessly trying to locate a few open seats are.
I think the only way this place could get a 5 star review from me is if they served (cheap $) alcohol. Now that would make a complete movie experience.. over priced popcorn, a new movie and a frosty beer... one can wish.

This really isn't the movie theatre's fault but, man, what a shit show! You wanna go to a movie with your signifigant other on a nice saturday evening? You want to try not drinking a gallon of vodka and just be good, maybe watch Paul Blart mall cop?
Well, just forget it on a Friday or Saturday night. It's like a high school hall way on steroids!
It was so bad I left (not cause I'm a pain in the ass but because those rascaly kids jumped theatres and I couldn't even get a seat in the break neck front row! Kevin James is pretty hiliarious, so I understand their desire to steal a viewing of this movie.
Anyway, long story short, I left, I was bummed and decided to drink a gallon of vodka and ended the night by throwing up in a snow bank and torturing my poor BF. I blame it all on Boston Common Loews.

Eunice gives it two thumbs down.

Say what you want, but by Boston standards, I think this is a large, nice, clean theater in which to watch a flick. Of course it's going to be wicked crowded during an opening weekend of a blockbuster. It has stadium seating and big screens playing mainstream releases.

What makes me a fan are the matinee prices. If you catch a movie that starts before noon, the price is $6/person. And if you go before like 5 or 6 pm, the price is $8.50. Regular admission or what you'll pay through the automated machines in the front lobby or through Fandango is $10. If you can get your butt up early enough, $6 is a very good deal and the theater is so not as crowded. And if you sneak in snacks, you save money on concessions! Or, so I've heard.

As a kid, I always rushed home from school on Fridays to watch the last thirty minutes of a Friday Kung Fu Movie.

Kung Fu movies with fight sequences where Kung Fu Master 1 attacks with a flying kick, and Kung Fu Master 2, quickly crouching to avoid the attack, thrusts his hand upward, catches Kung Fu Master 1's testicles in a Tiger Claw, and crushes them. The close-up then shows egg yolk running through the Kung Fu Master 2's hand. (If anyone remembers this movie, please private message me!)

Loews Theatre Boston Common is just the place to watch trashy/action movies. You won't find any independent movies playing here!

The place is generally clean but crawling with rowdy teenagers and the occasional crackhead/beggar. Most, if not all, of its screens are giant-sized, and the stadium seating has folding armrests! There just isn't a better place to watch wide-release popcorn movies.

Why do I appreciate Loews Theatre's clientele and selection? Because I spent my childhood watching TV quietly, alone, in a wicker chair, and mostly at night when my parents were asleep. I was the captive audience for American classics with exemplary acting and plot development, such as Chuck Norris in "Delta Force,"  Tom Selleck in "Magnum P.I.," and David Hasselhoff in "Knight Rider."

So, yeah, Loews Theatre suits me just fine.

It's a classic multiplex cinema! The main draw, for me anyway, is that it's big on style. It's a very nice looking building! Also, it's quite clean, which is a plus.

Additionally, they're nicely handicap accessible. Kudos to them!

Movie quality is usually pretty good, though I have had a few films that were relatively tinny sounding. Once the picture refused to focus, and then became out-of-sync with the audio, which was not corrected until someone went and pointed it out.

Last time I was there my wife went to buy the tickets while I rolled to the bathroom. The man let me through the rope to use the facilities, but he informed me to "not cause trouble." Hrrm.

I tend to end up here most frequently.  It's crowded, and features many bored teenagers who love to yell.  Ok, whatever.

The customer service is pretty bad.  I mean, I understand.  It can really suck as a part time job.  I know you don't want to be there on Saturday night.  Or Valentines Day evening.  Or during the run of the Dark Night.  You don't have to smile, I don't require that, but I'd really appreciate it if you gave some attempt at politeness.

Theaters are roomy, seats are comfy, and they move around a bit.  No complaints there.  Screens are big, sound is excellent.  Action movies work great here.

Bathrooms are pretty gross.  Again, minimum wagers, who don't want to be there...I understand your plight!  I currently am doing the SAME JOB somewhere else.  And I hate it sometimes - but I clean the damn bathroom.  Suck it up.  I paid you over $9 for my ticket, only to have to hold it till the next stop on the tour?  Not OK.

I have to uphold the two star rating comment as totally appropriate for this place - "Meh.  I have experienced better."  But if you want a passable, reasonable, experience, or require the huge screen/sound (for an action movie), Loews is your place.

Boston, you need more movie theaters.

Now, I know that by saying that I'm encouraging people to pay a lot of money on something they can rent for half the price later, and I'm encouraging people to spend time in a movie theater when they could be outside. But the truth is that this is one of the ways Boton is lacking.

And don't get all hussy with me, listing the places in Chestnut Hill, Newton, Waltham, or Everett where I can see a movie. Allow me to show you a map of Boston (not Cambridge): there are only 2 movie theaters. Boston Common and Fenway.

Why not another movie theater in the Theater District, showing old movies? Why not a movie theater in the South End showing independent films? Where is the new movie theater that can service all the new people and residences at the Waterfront/Seaport/Pier district?

And this theater itself attracts a lot of punks and rowdy crowds. Tons of kids yelling and hollering, and that's just in line to get a movie. I would never, never see a hit movie on opening weekend Friday night. Never. I would rather jump off the Hancock.

AND THE BATHROOMS ARE DIRTY.

Okay, this review wasn't all that coherent, cohesive, or codependent, if that's what you're looking for. I just saw a movie there this weekend, like my hundredth, and it was just all one big sigh. Clean up your act, Loews!

Let me just tell you about the nightmare that was the Sex and the City Premiere night at Lowes Boston Common Theater.  It was as if the obnoxious cosmo guzzling wanna-be sluts had jumped out of the screen itself and multiplied by the thousands... SJP clones packed like pickles (thanks Ellen) into what is usually a decent a sized theater lobby.

I wasn't even there for the damn premier of Sex... I experienced this all as I exited the venue after seeing The Strangers (quite possibly the worst film EVER on the big screen).

Getting out of that theater was worse than trying to push my way through a crowded NYC Metro train during rush hour.  The crowd SHOULD have been anticipated, ropes SHOULD have been up to assist with crowd control, and they SHOULD have been full staffed in preparation for the nonsense...  but what good does it do to live your life concentrating on the "should'ves"...

That being said... I didn't pay $10.50 for that crap. The professionals at AMC Loews, and their handling of the crowd have officiated my pledge to never return.

I like this theatre.  I do.  I mean, half the time you can count on some kids to be there, being loud or kicking your seats and your male companion turning around and passive-aggressively glaring at them for several seconds every time they do, but it's ridiculously easy to sneak food in, which I always do, plus it's right near the Tam, which livens up any movie-going experience!

Get your tickets before you go, though.  Seriously.  What a pain in the freaking butt those lines are.  Also, beware -- a lot of their late showings end after the T stops running.  Plan accordingly.

Biggest theater in Boston. Not the place to catch an indie flick, but definitely the place to experience your favorite upcoming Hollywood blockbuster.  If you can hold off a week after said blockbuster opens, you'll avoid the crowded theaters / messy floors / kids kicking your seat that seem to have garnered a fair amount of negative feedback for this place. Frankly, you'd get all of that at any theater on an opening weekend.

I second the Yelper who suggested the benefits to be derived from the proximity of The Tam (and am quick to point out that the Intermission Tavern isn't far either).

OK, I know I try to avoid reviewing chains, but this place is my go to for anything that needs great screen, great seat, great sound.  Pretty much I hit this, Kendall or Harvard (if I am lazy).

And back in the day, it ROCKED that they had a bar on the second floor - the Backlot, I think.  It was great to grab a drink before seeing, say, Spiderman I - and then popping back for an after-flick pint and discussion on the philosophical meanderings of Peter Parker.

Or just talk about the hottie at the end of the bar.

but back to the theater..... I cna't comment on how it is on weekend nights because I would much rather peel off my skin and bathe in boiling rubbing alcohol before ever attempting a movie night like that.  refer to other reviews if you are thinking of hitting this place on a night like SatC on opening night - I think Scott B can sum that up nicely.

This is my first non 5 star or 1 star review. The place is really nice. Yes complain about the prices, whatever, just dont go that often and bring your own food/drinks. The only problem that i have, and its a big one, is that guy that comes into the theatre before the movie to sell snacks from his cart. This guy is the single most annoying person on the planet. I am surprised no one has walked up to him and just punched him. It might have happened. I went 2 weeks ago and he wasnt there. Things are looking up!

I really want to give them 3 1/2 stars but there aren't half-stars and they don't deserve 4 stars lol so this'll do.  The main thing that keeps me wanting to go here is that it's just so damn beautiful lol. IT IS!  It makes the movie-going experience so much fun.  But..the price is just rediculousssss.  It'll set me back like 10 bucks to watch a movie and I just find that excessive but hey, grand movie theater, grand prices.  Thank god I'm into bringing my own snacks to the movies otherwise it would set me back $20 everytime I went.  So yeah, this is a place to go to treat yourself, or if you have a job and can spend 10 dollars a ticket. Otherwise, Regal is more economical.
