For first timers, finding the location of each escalator to the next story is a trick. On the second floor, you have to walk across the floor to get on the escalator subtly bound for the third floor.
Other than that, the top floor is like a yard sale of designer goods. If you weed around long enough, you might find something great for really cheap. I only deeply wish that the blue Nanette Lepore jacket I found earlier this week came in size 4 at Loehman's -- I only found sizes 2 and 6 here.
Oh, the perils of discount designer shopping!

omg. i love loehmann's. like, a lot.
whenever people ask me where i got my clothes, the answer is always loehmann's. they have a lot of stuff here that i really like. though i've never had great luck with shoes here i must say.
anyway, this is the best loehmann's in the city and loehmann's is the best store of this type. i went to century 21 with a friend last weekend and found myself wishing i was at loehmann's instead.

Total garbage. Take all of the racks of clothes that nobody would ever touch at other stores, and jam them in here. Then fill the store with morons.
No thanks.

I love Loehmann's for this reason:
I see a fight break out EVERY time I come here. The entrance/exit door is in very close proximity to the purses and sunglasses. Inevitably, someone will push the door open into someone browsing and not say "excuse me" and a fight erupts. Ironically, the security guard typically stands there, silent, and watches in a state of amusement. Who could blame them?
I love the handbag section here. The clothes leave a lot to be desired, but that's okay-it's Manhattan! There are plenty of places to bargain shop in this fabulous city!

I absolutely adore Loehmann's discount shopping. They have a huge variety and although it can take a bit of digging, what you find inside is almost always incredible. It's one of the few clothing stores where if I see something for someone I know I'll still buy it, because of the price and how amazing these things usually are.
Get a Loehmann's card (and you can get coupons too) and then on top of the amazing deals you can cut even more money out. Honestly, Loehmann's is one of the best stores to find great clothing at incredibly low prices.
Just don't go there if you only have an hour: as I've learned you can spend nine or ten hours in Loehmann's and keep finding new things.

Really, really good bargains. I find so many things that are still in department stores, but at a fraction of the price. This particular location had a really good "active wear" selection.
The only downfall is the fact that they have a communal fitting room. I am not shy or anything, but last time I got stuck next to a lady who smelled, stared and insisted on giving me her opinion...
I am a clothing WHORE. yes... a whore. I love fashion, but REFUSE to pay retail prices. Whenever i see a Loehmann's, my heart skips a beat. THEY ARE INCREDIBLE! It is a clean store, with floors and floors of deals that you can't even wrap your mind around!!! My girl Betsey Johnson has her bags and TONS of her wraps and such there... for almost 50% discount, sometimes MORE!!! If you join the insider club, you get EXTRA deals, and they email you coupons for 15-20% off your ENTIRE purchase. OH... and the SHOES??!!!!! forget about it... you are in for a treat. Yes, it can be crowded... especially on the weekends. But i tend to make a morning run there... grab a chai, and enjoy the fabulousness that is... Loehmann's.

A 100% cashmere sweater from French Connection for $19.99.
A $39.99 cocktail dress.
$19.99 Natori, Calvin Klein, Cosabella, and DKNY underthings.
Cute Betsey Johnson and Vera Wang negligee.
Loehmann's is filled with lots of great buys if you stick around and wander enough to find them. There is seriously floors and floors and floors of stuff. The line at the check out counter is long but really organized. The salespeople ring up customers really fast and every 2 minutes you hear, "NEXT IN LINE!" It's about a 10 minute wait and I don't mind waiting when I'm saving all this money. It means I'll have more money to spend at the next store. Saturdays were meant to be spent on shopping. (Picture me holding a bunch of bags.) Yippee.

Update: 04/22/08
My God, I have arrived. I am a New Yorker according to Loehmann's. On a Thursday afternoon, I decided to browse at Loehmann's and while I was there picked up a pair of loafer socks. One. I stood in line for about 15 min and when I got to the checkout counter, the saleslady laughed at me. Then she called her friend at the other register and said, "Hey look at this! She stood on line for one pair of socks! Now that's a New Yorker!" I told her, "Honey, If I were on vacation, I would not be standing in this line. I would be out somewhere else." Hardy har har. If it were not for the compliment, I might have been a little taken aback. But I thought it was kind of cool. I'm a New Yorker! No one tell them I'm from California okay.

I never have a problem finding shoes I love or clothes to try on :)

I lived in NYC for years and years without going to Loehmann's, despite all the gushing from friends about the great finds. So, one day, I found myself needing to kill some time in the neighborhood...
Why oh why did I enter this place? I poked around the "designer" areas and the shoes but it was all so disappointing. I knew of course it's not merch from any recent season and obviously it's easier to find an irregular size, but so much of the clothing was damaged. Stains and rips! Uggggh...
And it smells funny...

I love Loehmann's...and when I say "love" I mean obsessed...Who wouldn't love the membership benefits like the frequent 20% off coupons and 3 hour early morning holiday specials. They offer a wide selection of designer bags, shoes, and clothing. This Loehmann's has a more impressive selection, both for men and women, than the ones in Jersey, but the place is messy and disorganized. The staff is bordering on incompetent, and the cashiers take forever.
I am giving this location 4 stars purely due to my fierce Loehmann's loyalty.
GOOD GOD, this Loehmann's is my own private hell. Shopping on the weekend here is to be avoided at all costs -- You will most likely spend five hours searching through piles (literally piles strewn on the floor) of garments only to finally find one thing that isn't hideous slash completely out of season slash did I mention only sort of not hideous...and then you'll go down to pay for it and realize that the line is oh, about 20 people long, and pretty much definitely not worth the wait.
The Insider Club is pretty much the reason to go. My old roommate introduced me to Loehmanns (thanks KJB!) She found a $600 Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater that she got for 1/2 off. I am pretty much waiting for my "Marc Jacobs" sweater moment. The assortment of stuff here is pretty random-designer and otherwise. Do not go looking for specific items-just look. Don't like the communal dressing rooms? Buy the stuff take it home and return it. I have found Free People, French Connection, Calvin Klein, Michael by Michael Kors and some others but nothing life changing.

You got some money?
You should definitely check it out.
Sign up at the register for their Insider's Club--THAT is the way to go my friends. Then you'll get special emails informing you of private sales and discounts throughout the year. FYI for the fellas: The whole basement floor is for men's clothing.
I will see you there--(as soon as I get some more money)

I don't like this Loehmann's location as much as the upper west one (no it's not a neighborhood snobbery thing, it's a stock and inventory snobbery thing!). They just don't get the sizes and the supplies and you know, it's a trek to get here and it's just not working for me, so I'm just gonna keep seeing the uptown Loehmann's, ok? It's not me, it's you.

Women's department is huge and the selection is great. Men's department is definitely not that great. It's the best place for a woman looking for a unique piece that you normally wouldn't buy because of the cost.

I live a few blocks from this store and it's both good and bad! Good cuz I can drop in regularly to check out their latest inventory. I always manage to walk out with some awesome pair of shoes, denim or something desirable! I adore Century 21 too and find that both places can be hit or miss but I'd say it's almost always HIT for me in both stores.
Their Insider's Club program IS pretty good because I get weekly emails notifying me of new stocks or in store promo's they have going on.
I knock off 1/2 a point for the messiness but it's worth enduring for the designer selection. Like most NYC stores, you don't get much in terms of customer service but I find the cashiers to be quite friendly.
I think of Fran Drescher from The Nanny whenever I come here because that was the first time I ever heard of Loehmann's. Thankfully the name would stick in my head (who can forget that nasal high-pitched nails-on-a-chalkboard voice she has?) and I come here after I've spent $100 on one item shopping elsewhere and would like to purchase 3, 4, or 5 for that price to ease my conscience, what little I have of it.
Much better than Century 21, which is a crowded dump.

I was in desperate need for a new coat, and after searching at various places I just couldn't seem to be able to find one that I liked and fell within my (somewhat limited) budget. I was walking around Chelsea and decided to give Loehmann's a try: I'd been there and had no idea what to expect. This store isn't very big, but you can definitely find some good deals without having to deal with the madhouse that Century 21 is usually. The men's clothes are in the basement, and sure enough, I quickly found a winter coat that I liked (Kenneth Cole, for half the original price). I also couldn't resist buying a couple of CK dress shirts (also half price). On top of that, there was a 20% discount on all outerwear the day I was there, and I got an extra 10% discount by getting their club card. So: I ended up paying around $130 for one coat and two shirts, and saved close to $250! Talk of a bargain! Yes, the place is a little ghetto and the selection is limited, but you just can't beat the prices.

It can be a hit or miss at this place. I was lucky enough to find 2 dresses here in my size. Surprisingly they have CURRENTswimsuits that I saw at Bloomingdales, but for discounted prices...the only problem is the sizes are random. I also saw a dress that I bought at Bloomingdales for full price 2 yrs ago at more than half off here...sucks...hahaha. Much better selection than Filene's basement or Burlington Coat Factory...they carry much better quality and designer clothing.

The women's dept has a HUGE selection of clothing. The following review is based ONLY on the men's department.
The men's department is ridiculously disappointing due to it's 3% retail space allocated for men's clothing and accessories. There are some stuff here that are decent, but the vast majority of the stuff for men are available at a better Ross store. If you're looking for designer men's clothing on the cheap, I'd suggest visiting Century 21 instead. At least they carry Ferragamo ties...

Loehmann's is very hit or miss. I only go there for the juniors department. They carry a lot of brand names for cheap (Free People), but a lot of it looks like the rejected clothes no one would buy. Occasionally, you can find a really nice piece of a clothing though for pretty cheap. The bags are still pretty expensive and the jewelry is too clunky/matronly looking for my taste, but the shoes are sometimes okay. Overall, it's worth a visit.
I love a bargain. I had to check out the Loehmann's here as I also shop the Loehmann's in San Francisco. This one has quite an inventory; filled to the hilt with aisles and rows of clothing and accessories. I found this location to be very stuffy with stagnant air, not busy at all during midday and a bit dim.
I did find a good deal on a quilted Calvin Klein jacket, black jacket and long scarf.
3 1/2 stars
The bridge and tunnel crowd ransack the whole store. All you need to concentrate on are the shoes on the first floor and the top floor designer section.

This place is insane --- in a very good way. There's for floors for women's fashions and accessories (shoes/handbags, juniors & sportswear, intimates/swimwear and other apparel, and the backroom). Sorry boys, there's only one floor for you and it's in the basement. I found the men's department to be a little bit lacking Though, if you need jackets, blazers and more dressy clothes -- it's worth checking out.
The shoe department is mind boggling, rows and rows of heels, pumps, sandals, sneakers, flats and so on. I drooled progessively. The handbags left little to desire, I wasn't impressed. I didn't check out the costume jewelry in depth, but I glanced over and saw there were a few cute, key pieces to spice up any outfit.
I bought a few items (red ticket, 40% is a glorious thing) and left happily with a cute shift dress and nondescript but much needed shirts. I wish I had more time to devote here because you really need to be in the mood to sift and dig through the countless racks and sections. Especially, if you're hunting the sale items.
Here's some do's and don't: do come here with some items and styles you have in mind since it'll save you time in the long runa nd you won't be too distracted by mulling over every single piece you come across. Know your budget, since it's easy to get carried away when everything is 20% off this and 40% off that. But I usually always leave with a shopping bag or two, so who am I to listen? Do not expect to come in and out, especially if you're shopping on the weekends. You will spend at least 10-15 minutes waiting on a long line that will snake from the registers all the way to the door.
As usual, shopping earlier or much later in the day will keep shorter lines. Or, you can suck it up and wait if you can't part with your items.
How did I not review this before?
I am a shopaholic and Loehmanns is my holy grail.
No matter what I'm doing or where I'm going, casual or formal, my first shopping stop is at Loehmanns...it's where my favorite designer jeans came from, my interview suit, all my favorite shoes...there is nowhere better and nowhere I'd rather go.

I honestly don't know how to rate this place, yet. The bag selection - personally, eh not so good. But the SHOES! OMG THE SHOES!!!
So many Marc Jacobs shoes for a lot less!! Ahhh! I was in love.
Then I walked to the women's section...
seriously, when I first walked in, I thought "mmm smells cheap." It did. Bordering on kind of bad cheap, but I apologize. Now, the women's section is a MESS. I'd love this store a lot more if it were larger so they could organize better.
I really walked around for about an hour (maybe more) and FINALLY walked out with a cute knee-length dress for $20 and cute earrings for $4. I didn't buy any shoes, but next time...
Im really dissapointed with this place. I went there to get some jeans, but there wasnt really much of a selection. The salespeople just stare at you like what are you doing here. I would rather go to century 21.

I spent a day shopping the 6th Avenue discount stores: Burlington Coat Factory, Filene's Basement, Daffy's...but I struck gold when I walked over to 7th Avenue and found Loehmann's. I'd heard that this is a fabulous place to find discount designer shoes, and it is so true! The shoes and accessories are on the main level, with the cash registers. The shoe area is the most crowded section of the entire store. Hit the shoes first though, because you'll need some energy and you don't want to lose out if they only have a few boxes of each shoe in your size (especially if it's a popular size). Once you have your shoes, go up to the top floor and work your way down again. You will find so many deals that you'll find it hard to pick and choose what your budget will allow. I went in the spring to look for fun dresses (for wedding season), and I left with four!
Tip #1: Go to the Loehmann's website and sign up for their mailing list. You get awesome coupons practically every weekend...hey, 20% off your entire purchase is a fabulous deal, especially when prices are already slashed from retail.
Tip #2: Avoid the creepy communal dressing room. I forget what floor it's on, but they do have private dressing rooms. Go find those. It's worth waiting in line to NOT have to change with some weird naked European ladies.

pure sex discrimination!
only one floor for men and four for women!!! :)
my first impression was that the store is really messy!
everything was everywhere and there was very little space to move about.
the sales person who was taking charge of the dressing room was happily chatting with other customer but clammed up when i was at the front of the queue.
well, no big deal to me but he just did not come across as friendly nor helpful to me.
the only things that caught my eye were the paul smith bags and a pair of earl jeans!
even though the bags were on sale, i could not bring myself to part with my money.:)
so it was down to the jeans.
i tried them on and knew it was a great bargain.
$40 for earl jeans???
get outta here!
that was what i paid and the original price tag said $165!
a savings of $125? cool huh?:)
but that was it, nothing else was worth spending my money for.
i suppose the women who come here have a better chance of hitting than missing.
as for me it was only one hit. sigh. will check back again next time though.

Heaven...
4 floors of unwanted designer clothing for me to spend my money on!
Im pretty lame... theres a Loehmann's in Westchester (where i reside) but i (with my mother) insisted on checking this one out because we thought they would have more classy designers at the NYC location! This location had different designers but nothing TOO different so, i think ill just stick to my local Loehmanns hehehe.
BUT... the employees here were MUCH more pleasant than the ones at the Westchester location... which was a nice surprise!
Also, i love how its divided into four levels because at the Westchester location its just one big floor of a mess and at least at this one, you can get through one floor at a time. And! theres a fitting room on each floor so you don't have to keep running up and down stairs.... oh the communal dressings room.... its the same at all Loehmann's i guess! Thank god, i got over my self concious awkward teenage years because i used to fear the communal fitting rooms! Now i reveal alll... whether they like it or not!

I worship at the alter of Loehmann's. I admit it. It ain't pretty. The people who work here would just as soon spit in your eye as count your items for trying on. Your fellow shoppers may inspire hopes of spontaneous hearing loss. The dressing rooms may house a mirror...or a dead body. BUT. The savings, people. The savings.
I can get my Cynthia Rowley, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs and Sue Wong for less than $100 and not feel guilty for being a label whore for once in my life. I have spent my hard earned dough on 5 items I love and only shelled out a mere $80. Try doing this anywhere else (that's not Forever 21 or H&M aka Wash-N-Disintegrate.)
Before you go:
Eat a hearty breakfast, you will need your energy to weed through what is crappy and what is the motherlode.
Wear a bra and undy set that you won't be embarrassed to be standing around under flourescent lights in. The private fitting rooms get pretty jammed but the communal fitting room is quick and worth it.
*be prepared for your fitting room neighbor to ask for your opinion or give you hers. It may be off-putting for some to have a half-naked stranger to point out your pants are too short, but it's surprisingly common!
Become an Insider Member for tons of extra coupons and savings.
Loehmann's I love you. Even when you're bad.
p.s loehmann's in paramus is generally more organized and has a big selection!
EDIT***
Check out the new Loehmann's on the Upper West Side! The shoe section is patrolled by a guy (saint) who's mission in life is to make sure it is organized and your size 7 is in its proper box. Let's help him keep it that way, shoppers...raid the shoes responsibly.

The concept of discount designer stores in theory are fantastic. In reality, they can be a goldmine or a nightmare, depending on the day. Loehmann's is one of those places. I love the irony that Loehmann's is housed in what was once the altar of greed-is-good fashion, Barney's, before bankruptcy forced them to close this location. Gone are the wool carpeting, walnut paneling, and prissy, pretentious salesmen who claimed you looked fab-u-lous no matter the fit as long as the price tag meant a healthy commission. In their place is a harshly lit mecca for off-priced fashion drawing thrifty customers looking to buy into the couture lifestyle for just a little dough. The original home of the designer bargain, it resembles T.J. Maxx or Marshall's in layout and organization, but is far more upscale in stock. You may have to sift through some picked-over goods, but patience pays off. They capitalize on names you'd most likely see at Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom. Women's clothing and accessories tend to dominate the racks with labels like Fendi, French Connection, and Betsey Johnson, but the smaller men's department impresses as well with Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren dress shirts, ties, suits, and sportswear, and accessories like Kenneth Cole wallets and money clips. There's also a limited selection of household items and luggage. Discounts generally range from 30 to 65 percent . . . or as much as 80 percent on the clearance racks. All that, without a pompous sales associate in sight, makes this great place to browse and buy.
