Perfect Bottomless Brunch on Sat and Sunday for you and your friends!!

Delish entrees for brunch @ like $15 or so. Bottomless mimosas and Bloody marys, and both are delish.

Amazing rooftop experience! Food was amazing, atmosphere is great, and totally Metro accessible.

We went here for a friend's birthday brunch. The price was right - $15 for brunch and unlimited mimosas or bloody Mary's if we liked them on Facebook. But we soon realized why they make you like them BEFORE you sit down.

The food was mediocre. My omelet was nothing I couldn't have made easily at home (and I'm not a great cook). It was edible, but nothing special. But for $15 with drinks, that would have been fine.

What really bothered us was the service. Our waiter, who spent most of his time texting by the bar, only stopped by to check on us when we waved him down. The unlimited mimosas were in fact limited because we had to work so hard for a refill. He was unfriendly and had an attitude as if any simple request was outrageous. He literally glared at us and rolled his eyes regularly. And then he forgot one person's order and refused to acknowledge he'd forgotten for 15 minutes (by which point, everything else was cold). At that point, another waiter came over to apologize while our waiter slinked back to his texting, where he remained for the rest of the time we were there. They did comp that person's meal, but when the check came, the 18% gratuity listed on the menu had turned to 20%.

On the plus side, it's got a cool rooftop area that is probably awesome during the summer. The people who got the eggs and chorizo and the French toast were pretty happy with their meals. And since brunch runs from 11 am to 3 pm, we still got great value for our money (because we stayed the whole time). And who knows, maybe out waiter was just having a bad day.

The facts, such as they are:

I, unwitting citizen, federal employee, and denizen of this fair city, invite friends and colleagues to the State of the Union party at Local 16, hosted by Network for Progress.  Secure a table for my group and settle in for some serious SOTU watching.

I will give credit where it is due.  The food was good.  The service was mediocre, but it was a busy night and they were crowded.  Ostensibly since 400 people had shown up to watch the President's address.

A few minutes into the speech, around the time that he was extolling the virtues of bipartisan cooperation, the table across the way began a loud and heated conversation unrelated to the speech.  It continued.  And continued.  The high-pitched nasal ditherings of a unremarkable woman were piercing my ears like a million vuvuzelas during the quarter finals of the World Cup.

Everyone in the dining room turned and gave them death stares to no avail.  So I did what any rational person would have done in my situation:

"Hi, I am sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you could keep keep it down.  We came here to watch the State of the Union."

The response from the offending party:  "Seriously?  So did I.  What are you talking about?"

"I have been sitting here since 7pm to watch the State of the Union and I can't hear the President."

I didn't really wait for a response, because the woman looked livid, and I had no intention of incurring her wrath, and frankly, I just wanted to watch the damn speech.

So I turned around and returned to my table.

I would think that any self-respecting individual, in the face of my obvious patriotism and love of country, would tone it down a notch.  Nope.  Instead, this lovely lady spent the rest of the speech, which she had claimed to be watching, complaining loudly about me to her friends, her husband, and anyone else who walked within hearing range, much to the dismay of the entire dining room.

All this can be forgiven.  Perhaps she had a bad hair day.  Maybe one of her fake fingernails broke.  I would have called it water under the bridge until her husband came over and accused (!) us of being Republicans and insulting his wife.  At which point many of the people at my table politely remarked that we were having trouble hearing the speech and we were, in fact, Democrats.  He wandered off after interrupting a good portion of the speech.  I am sure I missed some crucial bit of information that will cripple me for years to come.

After the speech ended she came over and asked the gentleman sitting next to me to move over so she could sit next to me.  When he refused she said to me, "You insulted me in front of my friends and told me to shut up so you are out of here."  And then kindly gave me the finger.

At which point we were informed that she was the owner's wife, and that I was being thrown out of the restaurant.

My companions came to my defense, and demanded an explanation.  And when none was forthcoming, we demanded a refund.  The charming bouncer offered to bodily remove me from the establishment.  After protestations and an invitation to call the police, we were (allegedly) refunded our money and we left.

I say allegedly because even though I wrote $35 on my bill for the charge to my credit card, Local 16 charged me $43.75 (charges still pending).

I now have many happy hours to spend on the phone with helpful individuals on my bank's telephone hotline.

All I can say is wow.  Really, lady, perhaps if you had a job, and had to work for a living, and realized how difficult it is to make a dollar in today's economy, you would have been a more gracious host at your husband's establishment.  Instead, all you have done is earned this review on Yelp, and my contempt.

Friendly Yelp readers: Take your business elsewhere, and check your bill.

Came here last week for brunch while visiting friends in D.C. We had some type of coupon deal that gave us a meal each for 4 people (from a pre-selected menu) as well as unlimited mimosas and/or bloody mary's. Unlimited? Yes. Needless to say, we didn't make it to our 1 PM walking tour around the mall..

My three friends all had pizzas, and they looked and smelled delicious. I debated between a white bean salad dish and the eggs benedict with salmon. Unable to decide, I asked the server which he would choose. He immediately replied "eggs benedict, hands down". Well, decision made. They were pretty good. Not the absolute best eggs benedict I've *ever* had, but then again, it's hard to beat Dahlia Lounge in Seattle.

What made me give this 3 and not 4 stars was the slow service. Granted, it was prime time for Saturday brunch and the place was packed (a good sign.. and word of advice, make reservations). But once we got our first drink order, it was at least another 15 mins before our server reappeared. And it was hard to track him down at the end to get the bill. Not a big deal, because it was great catching up with friends. But service could have been slightly more prompt. They did, however, keep our beverages topped off, and that I very much appreciated.

Brunch here was pretty good!  Bottomless mimosas are always a plus.  I had the french toast (which seems to be my brunch staple lately) and it was really good.

The decor was pretty cool too, I like the exposed brick and wood.

I would certainly come back here for brunch again.

This is not my kind of place because of the crowd that hangs out there, very preppy, lots of single-mingling, and if you like that kind of place, then this is the bar for you.

However, the service was fantastic. The bartenders were very friendly, and I got all of my drinks quickly, which is rare considering how crowded it was.

I'm also a fan of the security there. A man was continually harassing my friend, and it was obvious that he was not going to stop. Once I brought it to their attention, he was promptly asked to leave.

I would return for happy hour or breakfast to see what it's like, but I won't be returning on a Friday or Saturday night.

I love this place. The decor and ambiance are just fantastic. It's like wandering around a really awesome house. And the rooftop is great. Their beer selection is meh, but the bartenders are most definitely fast and friendly. And while crowded and loud, it isn't too crowded or too loud.

Local 16 is one of those bars you go to when you first hit DC, especially when you're silly enough to still go out late on Friday/Saturdays on U St/Adams Morgan/Dupont without a crew. It gets a bad rap, but considering how large of a bar this is and its location, it's A-ok by me for a quick happy hour or a big weekend birthday bash. It gets packed on weekends, especially in the upstairs dancing area. I personally like lounging downstairs or outside because I'm a grumpy old lady.

Local 16 main draw is the roof patio that can get crazy, but is oh so wonderful on ridiculously humid days in DC. And they heat it in the spring and fall when it gets a little cooler too. They're pretty chill about reserving the patio earlier in the week(for free!), but it may not be the most organized thing in the world. They've also just started offering brunch, which really isn't anything to write home about but it'll do in a pinch.

Happy hour specials include $5 margherita pizza that's passable, as well as a wide drink special selection.

    Happy Hour specials 5-8pm M-F:

    *$5 Rail Drinks

*$5 Peroni, Blue Moon, Batch 19, Locale Ale

    *$4 Miller Lite

    *$5 Specialty Cocktails & Martinis

*$5 House Red & White Wine

    *$5 Margherita Pizza

    I love this place.

The goat cheese is simply to die for. I would come back solely for this item on the menu. I also got the roasted eggplant: yummy and a pesto pizza.

The place transforms into a club at nighttime. And the rooftop bar is a place to see and be seen during the more temperate seasons.

I love the idea of local produce and simple ingredients.

I also got the squid with the inked rice, but wasn't a big fan of my teeth turning black after eating the rice.

The blueberry lemonade cocktail is delicious too :)

It serves its purpose, but I have some service gripes.

The bartenders manage to complete the rare "Triple": inattentive, condescending, and rude. Honestly, aside from location, there is no reason this middling establishment gets repeat business. But it does, so congrats?

On a side note, I went here with a bunch of people from out of town, and their reactions were, "Wow, is that how all bartenders act here?" Well, they don't, but thanks for the horrible impression.

Drop the attitude, you're not impressing anybody.

Very cool place.  I like the interior and the lighting.  I am not always a fan of dimly lit places (that forced speakeasy asthetic), but this place pulls it off.  The service and the food were very good.

    Small plates:

Mussels were great.  They could have been bearded a little better.
The torta espanola was good.  What made this dish was the almond romanesco sauce.  So good.

Arrancini (rice ball with mozarella cheese) could have used more seasoning.  The cheese was too mild and lacked flavor.

Local 16 is a unique U Street venue with enough interesting specials to keep the locals coming back for more.

I have been to Local 16 a few times during the last year and have had "okay" experiences (mostly tolerable as we were there at busy times for birthdays, etc and those experiences tend to be annoying anyway to coordinate for large groups). However, I went to Local 16 recently for their brunch special (a deal from The Capitol Deal). My boyfriend and I both had breakfast style dishes (omlette and french toast) and bottomless mimosas for $15 each person total. Amazing! We were both perfectly satisfied from the portions of food, and left a little tipsy from the carafe's of mimosas given to us to share during our hour or so at the table.

I am eager to return with friends (if you are a fan or friend on facebook, you can get the $15 deal through the end of the year) as we all like our bottomless mimosas and enjoy a hearty brunch meal.

One note, the FOH (front of house) service is a bit amusing/ridiculous for a brunch service with 2 different guys checking ID's and another asking to help you and yet another guy with an ipad running around checking on things - but you will appreciate all of this pomp and circumstance once you have a great experience at Local 16 - much, much more positive an experience than many other brunch haunts in DC these days!

Eat, drink, and be merry at Local 16 brunch!

I went for the Prix Fixe menu with Heirloom Tomatoes as the featured item and was very disappointed.

I think people go there for the bar atmosphere rather than the food.

The dishes were dirty and so were the glasses and the quality of the food was so-so.

    We had:
-Risotto ball ($2.50 for that little thing?  Are you serious? Pass!)
-Arugula salad (a lot of arugula and thin slices of tomato but just bland)
-Pasta (choice of shrimp, meatballs or vegetables)
This pasta was thick strips but had absolutely no flavor and was very chewy.  The sauce had absolutely no depth, it tasted like out of the can.  I had 5 really small shrimp and my bf got the meatballs which he referred to as the ones you get in cans of chef boyardee, they were ultra small and also bland.
-Rice Pudding & Creme Caramel (also very mediocre)

The only highlight of the meal was the $16 bottles of wine.  I got a bottle of Pinot Noir Mark West for $16 versus the $36 it usually is.

Local 16 should stick to late night drinks and roof top parties.  They have turned having brunch on a Saturday or Sunday into a ridiculous scene - locking the door until 11am and making people line up, and then turning people away if they don't have a reservation.  Coffee - weak, Mimosas - nothing to rave about, brunch menu - descriptions are better on paper.

Save yourself the grief and head down the street to Vinoteca.

I really love Local 16 as a restaurant. As a bar, it's a bit too crowded for my tastes these days - though is a great place for a mid-week hh.

I've been there 3 times for food - twice for dinner, and once for brunch.

I had gnocchi (it was ok) and the pizza (very good).  Service was great and the atmosphere is unique! I am really glad to have this gem right across the street!

    Nope. Not a fan.

This is one of those strange places in D.C. that every single one of my friends loves except for me. Why don't I like it? Well, Yelp, I will explain:

    1. I feel old here. Everyone here looks and feels 22. Look around.
    2. The music tends to suck. No really. Listen. It kind of sucks.
    3. Overpriced. Too much money for drinks.
    4. The roof is nice. But there are other establishments with air and outside patios that are better, cheaper and a lot more lovely than this place.
    5. I only had fun here a handful of times. The best time was right before the Obama Inauguration in 2009. I danced and drank some tequila shots with two of my closest friends.

Conclusion: if you have friends who love this place and you love your friends, suck it up. If you're meeting strangers or acquaintances here, suggest another place. Which one? How about any bar to the east of this place on U Street. Seriously. Any bar. Go.

I've been here several times for happy hour events but never had a chance to form much of an opinion until now. When my organization decided to host our own happy hour, I decided to reserve the 2nd floor lounge at Local 16. During the planning process they always responded to my emails within 24 hours and answered all of my questions clearly. Night of the event, I arrived early and the bartender greeted me right away. He was incredibly helpful and frequently checked in to make sure I was happy with the setup, lighting, music, etc. Overall, the service was fantastic and the attendees were very happy with the food and drinks. Some attendees are even thinking about hosting an event for their organization now.

I never knew this place existed a few weeks ago. This is a great place to be if your meeting up with people for light drinks and maybe something to eat.
In the summer the only place you should be in here is on the rooftop. Careful, after 10ish it gets crazy busy here. Me and some were having drinks around 9ish and they were putting the tables away to make room for a stand only area on the rooftop. Later on, we left to go somewhere else and came back and their was a line that extended far beyond out imagination. Crazy!
Food- pretty good, but the service is slow.

Oh yes, I am a fan of Local 16. From the drinks to the food, the rooftop to the first floor, this place has everything you could want. Brunch? Yes. Dancing? A little. Pizza? Check. Cocktails? C'mon seriously, yes.

I have just moved to Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan (depending on who you ask), and Local 16 is now only 10 minutes away. I cannot wait to take advantage of the drink specials, and the rooftop as the nights get cool and crisp. The staff is friendly, the ambiance is fun, and the people are generally friendly and attractive... ;) I hope to make Local 16 my neighborhood spot. Love it!

I should give Local 16 a gold medal for putting up with my antics and the antics of my 12 friends a few weeks back.

we came to celebrate numerous birthdays on a fun, warm saturday night. not only did we arrive late by oh, 15 minutes, but we also didn't want to sit right away because it was a nice night and the rooftop bar was beckoning. Was this an issue for the cats at Local 16? no no no. they were super laid back and awesome and really, just wanted us to have a good time.

and have a good time we did. those upstairs bartenders can certainly make a mean salty dog. anyhoo -- eventually (probably 945p) we sat for dinner in the downstairs dining room. Our server was awesome and promptly brought us out the champagne I had ordered in my tipsy, post salty dog (or two) haze.

We all ordered separately but really ended up splitting a variety of appetizers, pizzas, steak frites, etc. My one, albeit glaring, concern with regards to the food is simply a personal issue. Steak frites. A steak frite is not a hunk of steak on a plate with a side of fries.  it was tasty...but thats not steak frites. thats a steak.

Frites incident aside, we really couldnt have had a better time. Numerous bottles of champagne and wine....we even sang our college fight song (annoying to everyone else? maybe. but we didnt care).

We stayed at the bar after dinner for a tick and then headed out to the wild world of U street.

the place is great -- cool ambiance, great service, good food and if you can get a spot upstairs --- all your dreams will come true.

Excellent brunch. Came here on a social deal coupon, and will definitely be back.  Have been to happy hours here, buy this was the first time on the roof deck.

Bloody Mary was delicious. Great combination of smoky and spicy.

Burger was freshly grilled and delicious. Eggs Benedict were phenomenal and homefries hit the spot.

And the nutella pizza?  Wow.  Way too much for that early in the day, but it was fantastsic.  Ate half, took half home.

Great service, great atmosphere...looking forward to another brunch here on the roof!

"Sperrys & Polos" are the two words I would use to describe the crowd/atmosphere of this place.  Maybe it's just my lack of style (forgive me I'm from the Midwest) but I find it odd when most of the patrons in a bar look like they came out of a J. Crew catalog/from a clambake.  I've been here a few times with my friends who live in and around the DC area for drinks on the rooftop.  My last trip here was for a friend of a friend's birthday party and is where we ended the night.  From what I can recall, the place was packed and the only area to get some breathing room was the rooftop.  The dance floor was pretty dark and I don't remember there being any drink specials.

All in all it was a fun time but I'd say that the most memorable part of the night was trying to actually negotiate with the cab driver to take my friend and I back to the Arlington area where she lived.  Apparently they don't want to take people out of the district for some reason.  We were able to not only convince him to bring us back to Arlington but also make a quick pit stop at Taco Bell; Double Score!!!

I really don't know why people flock to places like this.

Scene: Friday night, accompanied by too many drunk boys.

The downstairs: really cool looking, chill vibe, wish I stayed there. Grabbed a Local 16 Ale (didn't have a finish, but wasn't terrible, either).

The upstairs: freakishly packed with dancing fools.

The roof bar: freakishly packed with huddled fools.

The "ambiance": excellent decor. Wished I could see it better, as the dance floor had no lights.

I had the pre-fixe heirloom tomato dinner.  While there didn't seem to be any actual heirloom tomatoes in any of the three dishes, I did enjoy the meal.  The salad course had oranges on it.  I had pasta with shrimp for the main course.  The pasta was quite good, but the shrimp were sparse.  I think there were 4 shrimp mixed in.  They were good, but... sparse.  The rice pudding for desert was pretty tasty.  I'm no rice pudding expert, but it tasted good!  We had vihno verde as our wine option and it was a good one that I have had before.  The red option was a shiraz.

It was really loud and crowded at the bar area.  Everyone at the bars was super dressed up.  Everyone at the tables was less fancy pants.  The decor is pretty nice.  It kind of looks like the Red Room at the Black Cat but with nicer furniture.   The music was good, (Band of Horses, MGMT), but it was inaudible because the bar area was so loud that it was hard to hear anywhere in the building.

I bought two of the the Capitol Deal specials for $15 brunch with unlimited mimosas, and a friend and I tried them out for brunch. It was pretty good. I had the Eggs Benedict with Salmon and home fries, and I also ordered a side of bacon. My dish was really good, and the bacon was perfect (crispy, just enough salt, not too thin/thick). My friend ordered the Original wood-fired pizza, and it was tasty as well. The portions were a nice size, and the service was great. And the unlimited mimosas were tasty as well. I haven't been at any other time, but I would go again for brunch.

There's a reason Local 16 is known as a place for drinks and not for food. Trust the greater intuition on this, and you'll have an ok experience here for the most part. However, should you decide to partake in the dining experience, you'll be going against the grain, and you'll likely be sorry for it.

We sat at a table near the bar and watched with great amusement the circus that is the staff of this place. It's obvious that there is no proper management here. Various points of our 90 minute dinner experience (note: we are not slow eaters) we saw no less than five staff members huddled by the end of the bar and three bartenders behind the bar. Occasionally a tall man in a grey suit would saunter around, and often ladies with ill-fitting clothing hustled around with walkie-talkies. All of this, and nothing was happening in the dining room. It was a Wednesday night and there were still empty tables, yet not one table around us seemed to get seated, given menus, orders taken, food delivered and check dropped in a "normal" timeframe. Our table of two was no exception to this messy service.

What's more, our server was so nervous and trying so hard to please us, that when we finally had to complain about something, he bashfully stated, "it's not my fault!" and looked like we had just kicked his dog or sent him a death wish. We assured him we knew it wasn't his fault that something was made so poorly and after too long of a wait. But we couldn't get over the fact that this guy was actually scared to bring it to the manager's attention.

Just to top it all off, when we were finishing up our meals, the music changed from barely audible background music to loud house music. On a Wednesday night, still during dinner hours.  We just laughed at the whole experience and knew that never again would we waste our money here for food.

Plus one star, however, for the moderately priced Johnny Walker Green label.

I love love LOVE Local 16!  I have been going here for years, love the rooftop and the ambiance is great. The food has always been good, especially their happy hour hamburgers, but they now have a new chef who is just fantastic.

The new addition of wood fired pizza is great for everyone BUT those with Celiac disease or a gluten intolerance as we unfortunately cannot eat the pizza.  I would love if they could have a couple of pizza options with gluten free dough, granted the whole cross contamination issue comes into play, but food for thought!

Let's not forget about cocktails, they are good but not great.  My only suggestion is that for the prices they charge there needs to be the equal amount of alcohol in the drink or else drop the prices a few dollars.

The food is great, different and always presented so nicely.  Their shrimp with pesto appetizer is phenomenal, and you just cannot go wrong with their entree sized hamburger.

Aman is a great host and so is his lovely wife Justinya!

    Cheers!

4 Words: Bacon Infused Bloody Mary.

I don't think I need to elaborate, but I will. I went with a group of friends for a birthday brunch a couple of weeks ago and, after watching a food network show about wood grilled meat, I decided to finally write my review.

The brunch at Local 16 is pretty awesome. Not necessarily because they do anything you wouldn't expect for brunch, but because the wood grill they use for the pizzas does absolute wonders to the breakfast meats. The bacon is absolutely amazing. Super smokey, thick cut, quality stuff. I think anyone who eats meat can agree that if you do bacon right, the rest is just icing on the cake.

I had the brioche french toast with a side of bacon (duh). It was delicious, however I was a bit disappointed I didn't try the chorizo and egg option. Everyone in my group was satisfied. The service was adequate and the bottomless mimosas flowed regularly. All in all, it was a very enjoyable brunch. Oh and did I mention:

    Bacon. Infused. Bloody. Marys.

The roof deck bar is one of the coolest I have ever been to.  The bar itself is the only portion with a roof, while the rest overlooks U street.

I've been told it can get super crowded and a little obnoxious.

    I will go back here.

Not that fun. The music was ok. I had fun because my friends and I managed to find a place to sit down and talk decently. The crowd was just what everyone else has described, young, obnoxious, drunk, frat house type.
This can be noted upstairs, specially in the bathroom section.
It's not a horrible place, it's just not my thing. Plus the bouncer was so rude that there is a fair chance I will not be coming back.

Love the roof deck, especially this time of year. It is a bit overcrowded at times and the other patrons (does anyone be me use that term anymore) can be a bit much, but it is a good place for an early pre-dinner drink.
Bartender was attentive and the drinks were nice and strong. The food is nothing special.

disappointing experience!  dingy dining area... pricey and terrible tapas...

stick with just having drinks up on the roof top terrace and you'll have a more enjoyable time I think....

the only enjoyable thing i had there was their sangria.... that was at least decent.... but besides that.. this place would be a SKIP for me...

Came here on a cold night since our awesome CM Tara L had put up an event for the  Blue Moon Spring Blond Wheat Ale Pre-Release. We were told that the event was at the upstairs bar so we headed up. There was a table with a suggested donation for local artistes/businesses into which I dropped a fiver.

Entered the upstairs bar area and saw a few people milling around in groups, a table on the side where someone was painting two canvases at the same time and another table with some napkins. I jumped into the short line to get a taste of the Blue moon seasonal. When I got up to the bar and ordered 3 blue moons, the bartender opened 3 bottles and handed them to me. He must have noticed the quizzical look on my face and asked if I wanted the spring blond. I nodded eagerly and soon was double fisting along with Sunny D and Nirali.

We were all hungry and spied a server walking around with two plates of pizza to try. By the time we made it over there it was gone so we finished our beers instead and kept an eye out for the next round of pizza.

Onto the pizza. They served two kinds - a pepperoni pizza and a cheese pizza with some delicious herbs on it. Both the pizzas were hot with a good topping to crust ration and I actually enjoyed the cheese pizza a lot. The server was uber-friendly and even maintained a smile despited being faced with a horde of hungry people grabbing slices as she was walking by.

Rinsed and repeated the beer-pizza circuit a couple of times. There was never a long line for the beer and the pizza was plentiful too.

Will have to check it out another time to get a better sense of the place and I've heard the outdoor deck is pretty awesome too.

Don't come here with expectations for a sophisticated evening on the town. This place is a ****show.

It has a roof deck, crowd control at the door, and never a long wait for drinks. The music is pretty good if you're not a stickler mix'n'match genres and random throwbacks. The crowd is usually pretty polite (if not a bit oddly dressed), and the bartenders pour heavy. You're bound to have a good time (as I did this Saturday) if you don't expect too much. It's just a bar, so don't be a snob and you should be good to go.

Is it a bad sign when the waiter answers his phone while taking your order? What about if it happens twice? My first thought was "Man, you're wife better be in labor..." but that sadly wasn't the case.

Ate a mediocre pizza, chugged down 2 Jack and Cokes to help me cope, and went home. Forgettable.
