No skimping on the cheese here AT ALL!!!!!!!!
Mad props to them being open till 10pm on a Sunday night. Alex, guy I'm dating, wanted Italian food for dinner and I knew about Lo Coco's but never been due to the cash only factor. He had enough cash on him, I told him how people have been raving about it, and he is half Italian, so we went.
When we got there, we only waited for 10 minutes outside when a table in the back corner cleared (I like sitting in the corner when possible). Alex is very keen on my love for cheese and instantly pushed the freshly grated parmesan in a little box with a spoon sitting on the table in front of me. This already excited me so! And then the flatbread came out, soft, warm, and delicious. Alex has a philosophy where the bread can make or break a meal. We finished a plate then during dinner, he asked for more bread and then politely asked to eat my portion, it was that good. And I was able to spread the butter on it and sprinkle the parmesan on it, which definitely enhanced the experience for me.
I ordered, on advice from Yelp here, the canneloni since I've never tried it before anywhere and I was informed on how super cheesy it was. Alex ordered the tortelloni con sugo. WOW OH WOW, SO MUCH CHEESE THROUGHOUT MY CANNELONI!!!!!!!! It was so gooey and scrumptious and I nabbed every bit of cheese and sauce possible. I didn't even have to add any of the parmesan in the box to it, something I usually have to always do. It's that good! And the tortelloni, he enjoyed it very much (I do not eat pancetta, so I didn't try his pasta) but I dipped my bread into some of his sugo sauce and I really loved the flavor to it.
I also never tried cannoli before which mildly shocked Alex so we ordered that. One very long, very crispy pastry and with some sensationally sweetened and smooth ricotta cheese made me swoon! The half Italian was very impressed with it and my tummy was very happy.
The atmosphere was cozy and comfortable, perfect for a date for us. And the service was respectful and courteous. We were able to see them slicing the fresh flatbread for all the patrons at our seat, it's that kind of place.
Who cares that it's cash only at Lo Coco's, save up and COME HERE! I know I will and get a cheese fix again!
THE WORST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD!
The owner Maria, is a CRAZY person who does not care about her customers!
My bf and I came here because it was close and we were craving italian food. We waited for 20 minutes (for our name to be called off the list) and when we were finally seated we waited close to 20 minutes before we just got up and left. TWO couples that were behind us on the waiting list were seated, given bread, and ordered wine in the time it took the waiter to NOT even look at us. My BF and both signaled for the waiter and it was like we were not even there.
We felt honestly discriminated against. Is it because I am a Latina? Or because we are under the age of 30? Is it because we have tattoos?
He and I have eaten at MUCH nice and much more expensive restaurants than this place. I dont understand why this dump with GROSS dirty carpet on their floors would be so discriminating toward a younger, hipper clientele.
Whats worse? When I called to talk to the manager about my experience she said that I was "crazy" and "never in the restaurant". Like I just randomly call restaurants and complain that I was not served! She told me that she "has been in business for 20+years and doesnt need my business" because of their "loyal customer base"!
She is a racist! and discriminates against young people!
Thank you Lo Coco's for RUINING my Sunday evening out with my bf. Thank you for wasting 40 minutes of my time crammed inside your overpriced dingy little shithole restaurant.
This is NOT the last you will hear about this. You will pay for being so awful to prospective customers. You will not get away with treating someone like this!
Normally Italian (or rather Sicilian) tends to not stick out too much in my mind.
BUT, this place is AMAZING. Seriously, the quality of food here is unlike any other I've ever tried in its genre.
Granted, it's small and only accepts cash, and you may have to wait 20-30 minutes for a table on a MONDAY, but it's so worth it.
TRUFFLES, people. TRUFFLES.
This review is in response to the Yelper who feels she was discriminated against because she is Latina and has tattoos.
Lo Coco's is a fabulous restaurant that I have patronized for years. It has a very loyal following of customers who are very nice. I have NEVER had a bad experience there at any time over the years. Based on the photo shown by the Yelper in question as well as the language she uses I can only conclude that she and her bf/gf/whatever do NOT belong in "nice" places. And If I were running Lo Coco's I would have told her up front that she and her companion were not suitably attired and would not be served. These individuals who feel they have a right to visually pollute the world with their absurd "look" should be kept out of mainstream society because they are a nuisance plain and simple.
** Note to Birthday girl at adjoining table. CAN THE PERFUME. You
made it really hard for me to taste my average Italian food.
Having been intrigued by their self-branding as a Sicilian restaurant, we went there on a weeknight to give them a try.
Five stars for the pizza - the best I've had in the Bay Area (sorry, Cheese Board), and their homemade bread is sooooooooo good!
Minus two stars for (seemingly) employing an exclusively male wait staff. Although this was my first time eating there, I've walked by numerous times in the past and have stopped by to take a peek during various Berkeley street festivals, and each and every time there have only been young male waiters. C'mon, people, the "wimmin-folk" make just as good servers...
Pros:
Dee-LISH-ous!! Warm atmosphere, friendly, inviting, fresh, cash only (yes, I am listing this as a pro! we do not need to support the credit card companies who bite off the profits of these hard working people)...and did i mention delicious?!
Cons:
Went for lunch on Saturday...and they don't open till 4:00
Me: pappardelle porcino - FANTASTIC. Very rich, and I could only eat half of the plate since I filled up on the heavenly homemade flat bread that came out before the meal.
Him: Pesto ravioli - FANTASTIC. Fresh fresh fresh! Tasted like the pesto was made 2 seconds before appearing on our table, and it probably was.
I forgot how good this place is. I used to be a regular when I lived in Oaktown, but sort of forgot about it once I moved to CCC. The pizza is excellent and the homemade ravioli is the best. Not to mention a very decent half-carafe of red for $12. And the staff are super-friendly. Yeah-the big line is at Dopo-but this place rocks in its own way.
When my friend suggested Lo Coco's, I thought it was a Mexican restaurant. Alas, it was not, and instead a quaint Italian family owned establishment on one of my favorites streets in Oakland, Piedmont Avenue.
It was a Friday night, and the wait was 15 minutes for a table, which wasn't bad at all. There were a handful of tables outside, which are the primo seats when it's a lovely summer evening. Unfortunately, we didn't have a choice of our seating options, so we were led to a table inside close to the kitchen area. I immediately was soaking in and totally digging the vibe. You could tell regulars come here to dine, and the staff yapped it up as if they were family. Gotta love it!
Reviewed the menu, which had a great selection of pizza, pasta, and special entrees. Decent wine selection, too. Our server was friendly and super knowledgeable about the dishes, how they were prepared with the ingredients, etc., He even mentioned a special pasta dish that wasn't listed in the menu, which Markus ordered and really loved. Unfortunately, I cannot recall exactly what was in the dish (sorry, blame it on the age)!
I ordered the Canneloni, which was some serious cheesy goodness. When it arrived on the table, it was super steamy hot, and you could see the cheese bubbling, proof that it was straight out of the oven! OH MYLANTA! Great tangy tomato sauce along with the cheese. Did I mention the cheese factor on this dish? There was no skimping at all, as there was so much cheese in every forkful that I almost had to twirl it around my fork like it was a pasta! Trust me, this was AWESOME! Yeesh, this was one of the best canneloni's I've ever had.
Dalane ordered the Tortellini with chicken and prosciotto in tomato sauce. This was pretty incredible, and the sauce offset the saltiness of the chicken and prosciotto. It was perfect!
All of us loved our dishes that we practically licked them clean. Oh, I can't forget the flatbread, which was served warm, and perfectly seasoned. We loved this so much that we asked for more. Unfortunately we stuffed ourselves silly with the entrees and the bread that we left no room for dessert.
Bellismo Lo Coco's! The food was delicious, hearty, and some of the best Authentic Italian food I've had in awhile. I heart the fast, friendly and wonderful service, as it was definitely a team effort as other servers would pass by our table to clear plates or to refill water, etc., if our server wasn't around. *This is a Cash only establishment, so no plastics allowed here!* I'm more than happy to support this Mom and Pop family owned Italian restaurant, and will continue to do so.
Arrivederci Lo Coco's.... Until we meet again....
Been dying to go here for ages! The place was bustling, and it was awesome to watch the efficient waitstaff manage to keep everyone's water full, plates of bread replenished, and hot dishes served. The bread they provide complimentary is likely the same bread they use for their pizza... and it's PHENOMENAL! Especially if it's freshly from the oven. Couldn't stop eating it! Our friendly and attentive waiter kept the bread coming. My boy and I ordered an amazing sautéed mushroom appetizer, which was larger than I expected. Really flavorful sauce swimming with perfectly cooked mushrooms. It went really well with the bread. We then split a pesto cream ravioli, which was so delish! The pasta was cooked just right, and the stuffing and cream sauce blended together nicely. I'd definitely come back with a group to try their pizzas!
Pro: Lo Coco's has been a Piedmont Avenue fixture for over 2 decades.
Con: CASH ONLY.
Pro: Nice wines by the glass selection.
Con: CASH ONLY.
Pro: Friendly staff, lots of local regulars.
Con: CASH ONLY.
Pro: If you like classic Italian dishes, the menu is solid.
Con: CASH ONLY.
I was a bit disappointed by the lack of non-pasta/pizza options (I know, I know...and I usually avoid Italian altogether, but this was a lady-date, and she picked the restaurant). But usually I can find at least a chicken dish, or a risotto.
Considering how long Lo Coco's has been in business, the staff seemed visibly flustered with the Friday evening rush, but they got the job done with a smile, and the food was great.
With all the new hot spots popping up on Piedmont Avenue, it's nice to see that Lo Coco's can still draw a crowd after all these years.
CASH ONLY.
Great location and atmosphere, but like BayWolf and Chez Panisse, I think they're coasting. My wife's pesto pasta was simply sauce stirred with noodles, and my lasagna was extra-greasy and no more distinctive or flavorful than what my mom makes. Plus, any Italian place that doesn't make their own pasta automatically limits how good they can be.
If you're on Piedmont, I'd recommend Cesar or Dopo instead, or if it's Italian you crave, head over to Milano on Grand instead.
i'd give lo coco's 3.5 stars. it was quite good, but there were few choices for vegetarians, so i got plain ol pasta w/ marinara sauce. it was solidly good and the bread they served was nice. maybe i should try the pizza next time, and see if that changes my mind a bit.
just got back from my first visit (of many) to Lo Coco's. delish!
note: they do not accept credit cards. cash and checks only.
the wait on a Friday night around 8 was only 15-20 minutes which on Piedmont is pretty sweet. the table has only a dozen or so tables and has a definite family vibe. love it!
i had the tortelloni gorgonzola which was really good. pasta stuffed with chicken & pancetta with creamy, tangy sauce. my girl had the ravioli con sugo (Sicilian style tomato sauce). the sauce is special. i come from a family with a decent sauce recipe and this one doesn't disappoint!
the pizzas also looked really amazing and our strategy is to split one on our next trip. there is also outdoor seating, but its a bit chilly for that these days. short, but satisfactory wine list.
EXTREMELY friendly service from someone who seemed like he either owned/managed the place. quick and straightforward.
PS. save room for the cannoli!!! yummmmmmm.
This place is fabulous. A family run chain of restaurants. The woman who owns this branch is the SWEETEST. She's always there so make sure to say hi! I grew up in this restaurant, scraping off the cheese on my pizza and eating it last.
They're a very unique italian restaurant in that their food tastes AUTHENTIC. I know, i lived in italy for 3 months!
Try everything!!!
One star service.
Four star food.
The food was tasty, and moderately original. The flat bread was cold. The $14 tortolloni was tasty, but small for that much money.
We waited for 25 minutes to get seated (shortly after, some guy shows up, walks in and sits down despite the waiting people). The waiter took our order, and then we didn't see him again. Another person brought out our food and check.
All and all, if there are open tables, and you have too much cash on ya, this is a good choice.
About a 4.5 on the pizza scale.
Great pizza dough and unusual toppings make this the hands down best in the bay.
I love their Lo Coco's special with chokes and chovies.
Worth a drive even if you don't like pizza.
I'd always wanted to try this place, and one recent cold windy night, when Dopo's seating options across the street were limited to the outdoors or a 40 minute wait, we ended up trying LoCoco's.
We ordered the mushroom appetizer--forget what it is called, but it is mushrooms sauteed in butter and wine, I believe. Great sauce for dipping bread.
What I like about LoCoco's is that they are an old-fashioned italian place, not nouveau italian gourmet. LoCoco's does Meatballs, and they are good at it. The recipes feel very authentic, but with good fresh ingredients.
I had fettucine in a cream sauce with peas and prosciutto, and it was delicious! I also had to have a side of meatballs, because they just looked good. Hubby had the canneloni, which arrived hot and cheesy.
Note to chicken lovers: They do not have grilled chicken to add onto your pastas.
CASH ONLY
Food: Very good comforting old world Italian cuisine.
Ambiance: Small neighborhood restaurant--good for families, couples or friends.
Service: Good and prompt. No frills.
Worthy of return visit? Yes, would definitely come back sometime.
I really like this place a lot. The wait can be awful because they just don't have much seating available, but they do let you order wine at the register and hang out just outside as you wait .
The prices are reasonable and the food is usually very good. Even the bread is fantastic, especially if you're lucky enough to get some straight from the oven. The pizzas are tasty, and I really like some of their pasta dishes. The pasta carbonara is my personal favorite, although once they had seriously overcooked the pancetta. At least I think it was pancetta. It could have been jerky.
I think they only accept cash so come prepared.
Pretty standard Italian fare with super fresh ingredients. I didn't have the pizza, but I enjoyed the warm flatbread, appetizers and pastas. I was also surprised by some of the complaints about service as it was really excellent when I went. We sat outside and the servers were really attentive without being over-bearing. They refilled our water glasses multiple times, provided helpful recommendations, and were really friendly.
It is cash only, which kind of sucks, but it's not a big deal if you know in advance.
Solid, reasonably priced, pasta dishes, which is a godsend in a neighborhood that prides itself on shi-shi, overpriced, fare.
Never ate here, lived in the area for almost 15 years. Lived near the one in North Berkeley, but always heard that this location is better. Wanted a pasta dish, didn't want to pay $20 for it. Plus I had heard that their pizzas are pretty good, being that they offer some interesting types.
Ravioli, stuffed with ricotta, was great. Their house sugo (tomato sauce) was everything a tomato sauce should be. Four people, pizza and pasta - under $50.
There is such a lack of cheaper Italian offerings in the immediate East Bay. Yeah you got Pasta Pomodoro, but come on folks - that just ain't very good. Then you have almost directly across the street from here, Dopo, which is awesome, but they take no reservations, and you have to wait outside for a table for at least 30 minutes. What else is there? Pizzaiolo (again killer, but again, 45 minute wait outside). Corso (new spot in North Berkeley, very good, but not cheap, and again, you will be waiting outside). So this place was nice, because it was more like your local pasta spot. Not pretentious, not fancy, just good, solid, homemade pastas and pizza.
Check it out. Your stomach will thank you, and so will your wallet.
A friend recommended this place, and we ended up coming here for my boyfriend's birthday, with a party of 8. We waited for a little while outside while they put some tables together for us.
The place was warm and inviting, our waiter was quick and friendly. We brought our own bottle of wine, and they waived the corkage fee since we bought another (recommended) bottle - which was delicious.
I've never had real Italian food, outside of chain restaurants, and this food was AMAZING. It was so fulfilling and delicious. I ordered the spaghetti with meatballs and it was so rich and sort of sweet. The meatballs were tender and I never knew they could taste like that.
All in all, the prices were reasonable and the food was incredible. I'll be taking family and friends here when they want some Italian.
Super good Sicilian style restaurant. I don't know what their special ingredient is for the red sauce, but it's to die for. The portions are huge and the bread they give you is a little slice of heaven. I prefer take out because this joint is kind of small and it's always crowded. It's a dinner only place. I wish they were open for lunch. The only 2 minor complaints that I have is that they don't take plastic and they don't ever seem to have the Tiramisu. Because their food is so good and their customer service is excellent, I still give it 5 stars.
Had dinner here last night and it was great! We tried the Penne Sugo and a Pizza with mushrooms and sausage.
The pasta was perfectly cooked and the sauce was sweet and flavorful. The pizza came out hot and generously topped with cheese, mushrooms and sausage. Everything had a home-cooked style and taste to it.
Would definitely come back here to try some of their other dishes. For now, this is my favorite Italian spot in the East Bay!
I am really surprised by the wide range of reviews. I've been coming here for over twenty years! The food has always been consistent, the prices are fair, and the parking is better than SF.
Great pizza and the tortolloni with cream sauce is the best.
It's not bad, but not memorable, not remarkable, and not worth a second try. The good things about this restaurant include the friendly service, ma and pop feel, and slow pace at which they let you enjoy yourself. The atmosphere is nice, and although the place is small you can even see into the kitchen and watch the guy toss a pizza dough. The food really has little flavor though. I was unimpressed completely with our entrees, and our tab was 29 bucks when all we had was 2 entrees and waters. Cash only? Come on! Good thing I had checks. I would never call this place "fabulous". Cozy, yes. Delicious, no. Ok if you happen upon it but don't plan a special trip here. Also, the menu is totally boring and has little selection. Nothing surprising or adventurous. Schmeh.
I ate here once and had linguini with clam sauce that tasted like it came from a can; and was served as I would have in college.
More importantly, I got sick later that night. I've never been sick from food before.
Great news - they've extended their hours and added a few coveted outdoor tables! They've also had a make over and the place looks lovely.
The Inferno is still as delicious as ever

I LOVE this place! For comfort food, the pesto cream sauce is a gourmet version of the Noodle-roni… Read more »
This restaurant is overrated. The food is mediocre. I found the pizza dough to be too chewy and even a bit tough. There wasn't a nice crunch to the crust. With the toppings, sauce and cheese, the dough was soft and soggy. The alfredo sauce was missing nutmeg, a major faux pas in a "real authentic italian restaurant." The waiter was a douche bag. He was impatient and when I asked a question he had a very condescending tone. As impatient as he was with taking the order, he never came back to refill our drinks. I finally got my refill when he returned with the check. Yes, I had to ask! And who clears dirty dishes while simultaneously taking food to pack in doggie bags? They do here!
From all the rave reviews here, I was expecting to be blown away, and I simply wasn't. We waited for a table on a Friday night, which wasn't too bad with all the people-watching that you can do on Piedmont Ave. At last, we were seated and were ready to be wowed!
I was promised that the pasta bolognese I was about to have was simply to DIE for. Honestly, I've had better, and no, I haven't been to Italy. The consensus was that each dish was OK but nothing to write home about. The best part of the whole meal was being able to order a carafe of the house red.
They make their own cannoli, and after watching one too many episodes of "The Sopranos," the hubby was finally able to try some real cannoli! Again, it was ... OK.
The added inconvenience of Lo Coco's being a cash-only place (it came to about $80 for three) only left more of a blase impression. We've tried it, the service was great and the food was fine, but we won't be back.
My boyfriend and I were craving Italian and we ended up at Lo Coco's. I had the Fettucine Alaska which has smoked salmon and a cream sauce in it. It was one of the best pasta dishes I've ever eaten. We also loved that we could get an entire liter of their house wine for $15 or so. It's cash only, so make sure you're prepared. Overall, it's a no-frills and yet super friendly, warm, and welcoming restaurant with great food and prices. We'll be back for sure.
We had a cheese pizza, salad and wine here and I thought it was fine...not great. The garlic hadn't been mixed in evenly, so I got a few very tangy bites of heavy garlic. Green salad was over dressed.
They got us in and out in good time. Servers were nice and the little pizza elitist with us liked it okay. I noticed most of the local diners brought their own wine to have with dinner. My hubby fondly remembers this as a hangout from way back days...but I'm not in a huge hurry to go back.
I ate with a friend at Lo Coco's last night on Piedmont Avenue. The restaurant is not really around a lot of walk-by traffic; I had to be told where it is before I found it.
The really good thing: pizza. I had a small pizza, which was twice as much as I could eat. The only thing I had on top the cheese was sliced tomatoes (#16), and it all was very fresh. My friend told me the Greek salad was marvelous. He has also had the cannolli on several occasions, and swears by it.
The only negatives: I really wish there were more menu items. I found the menu limited. Parking around there sucks, as it's all on the street.
Service was very nice.
When it comes to italian, there are very few K.O. calibur restaurants I can recommend or even remember. If anyone is in the Eastbay and jonesin' for italian, LoCoco's is the place to be. Keep in mind that when everyone says, "expect to wait 20 minutes or so" to be seated. They REALLY mean it. It's worth the wait.
I'm not a spagh & meatball (4) fan, but i tried it b/c a friend recommended. Only at Lo Coco's will i want to order another one. The sauce and meatballs were good, but the spaghetti was the best i've had so far. Now i know what authentic al dente pasta is.
kat had the pappardelle (4) in white sauce, mushrooms and truffle. its a "special" so this is one of the most expensive pasta dishes.the truffle aroma really explodes off of the plate and the taste of truffle is even more intoxicating. if you dont mind paying 18 bones...its worth a try at least once. i had a st. bernardus belgian when we got home and to my surprise, with each and every burp, i was still able to enjoy the truffles throughout the entire night. so 18 dollars, divided by the hours i was able to enjoy the truffles actually comes out to .... $3.60/hour. kat enjoyed my truffle after party as well, so that makes it $1.30/hour for each of us. now thats a f'in truffle bargain. that's how we roll.
Next time we'll try the pizza. Rumor is that it was sent from the heavens above.
I dined at Lo Coco's last night on a friend's recommendation, andLOVED the pizza (a vegetarian pie with added olives) so much that I ate way past my "full-point" and ended up with a bit of a tummy ache. I loved the cannoli, too, which is noteworthy, as I'm not usually a big cannoli fan. In short, the food was very satisfying, and had me wishing that there was a satellite in SF...
What I didn't love, however, was the service. It wasn't that our waitress wasn't friendly. Far from it, in fact. It was more that she showed up so infrequently that I forgot what she looked like. After waiting over 30 minutes for a table, it would have been nice to get some attention within 15 minutes of sitting down. Didn't happen. Next time, I'll sit inside so it will be easier to snag someone when needed...
This gets a "just eh" from me.
The pizza is delicious, but they charge extra for a side of bread on a to-go order.
The pizza is delicious, but the tall, thin waiter who is usually wearing a white turtleneck is one of the ruder people on Piedmont Ave.
Can you tell I like the pizza? The rest of the menu seems fairly uninspired to me - how can a "down home italian place" not have chicken parmigiana? To shame, Lo Coco's!
Pricey for what it is, but a good stand by for pizza when you're craving it. Would just love some friendlier service!
Eh, it's more like a weak 2.5. I would go back here if I exhaust all the other options in the area and come up with no real homestyle Italian place to call home.
Portions are below average, food is typically pretty salty, but at least there is some garlic in it, unlike Filippo's. The atmosphere inside is a little cloistered and the wait seems disproportionate to the quality food, but then again there are NO GOOD ITALIAN RESTAURANTS AROUND HERE.
I would definitely choose this place in a pinch over pretentious and poorly executed mess Dopo across the street. I have to keep reminding myself that just because a place has good reviews on yelp does not mean it's a lock for a good meal. Most people do not have very discriminating taste.
Very homey, flavorful meal. We ordered meat balls, clam pasta and tomato & basil salad. The bread was great, too. Fairly inexpensive, too.
I would definitely come back.
In response to Daniel S.....Lo Cocos provides good service and always has...I've been eating there since 1981. They are a victim of their success...that is, there are way too many people that want to eat their food, and they all want to do it at the same time. We have waited more than 45 minutes on many occassions...what does that tell you...if the food is good enough to make people wait that long it must be very good indeed (or do you subscribe to the Yogi Bera school, "Nobody goes there anymore, its always too crowded.")
For me the pizza is the best in all of the bay area....period. But that's not why I go there...I go for the sauteed calamari....it is the best I have ever had...not just the best calamari, but one of the best meals I have ever had, and I get to do it over and over again througout the years. My kids started going there while there were still in diapers...they are now in their late 20's, living in SF and and they go whenever they get a chance...
I've been going to Lo Coco's for decades it seems. As kids dad would always take us to the one on Shattuck...the only thing I remember about going then was that dad always stood up and hit his head on the lamp above our table.
I now consider Lo Coco's one of my local favs. I find the atmosphere and food so comforting at the Piedmont Ave location. I could live on the bread and currant salad-one of the best salads ever. I once dropped a takeout salad on my carpet and cried. It's that good.
