I grew up a block away from this museum and I understand they are celebrating their 46 anniversary this year.  I have been there many times since I went to both grade school and high school across street.  It hasn't changed much in that time.  Like the other reviewer stated, there is an artistic flavor to this museum that you would not expect being that the museum is dedicated to fossils, stone, rocks, gems and such.

You have to stop in the downstairs gift shop.  they have many neat stone and gem gifts, plus arts and craft items.

Great for a child as well as an adult as long as this is your cup of tea!

This museum has all sorts of gemstones , minerals , and rocks. Basing this review off of second hand information from my son , who seemed to really enjoy it. I will add my opinion after I take him there as planned.
...
Wow , reading the above review I can now see how base it was. My first impression entering the museum was wow. My son and I are wired really different , he's very much a logic based person , while I have a bit of an artistic side. He prefers things with definite answers like science , therefore he was really taken by the geology aspects of the museum. The basement of the museum is filled with samples of all manner of semiprecious gemstones and minerals. They show the differences between many different kinds of rocks and minerals. I saw the artistry of the museum. They were featuring a large selection of cameos at this time, and I saw the most oriental jade carved art I've ever seen in one place. They also had a number of figurines all carved out of precious and semiprecious stones. The only negative about this place was it's size , it's really small. It would be a decent exhibit inside the Field museum , but as a stand alone place , I can't see this as a destination place anyone would travel any great length to see. If you are in the area already , it is a really neat place though , definitely worth the couple of bucks they charge. Fridays are a free day , otherwise they charge $4 per adult and $1 for kids under 12.
