this place was ok. not sure why two people i know referred us here.

we grabbed a quick bite to eat before my sister's dance show. the staff was young and the girl that took our order was SUPER nice. =)

the decor is very eclectic. lots of different chairs, tables, couches, etc. a lot of people on their laptops. it was difficult for my sister to keep having people move around so we could fit 7 of us.

no one wiped down our table. i had to ask 2 times and wait 10 minutes for someone to finally come by and wipe down our table. he didn't even cover the whole table because it was big. i had to ask him to come around to my side and wipe it because i planned on eating food.

i ordered the ravioli, which is pretty much already put together, they just have to heat it up. i ordered the meal which came with a side salad and fruit. ravioli was ok, nothing amazing, kind of like frozen food. there wasn't enough marinara sauce on it. warmth was great. side salad was over dressed....the leaves were swimming i pools of dressing. by fruit they meant a small slice of grapefruit and orange. just one of each.

we also ordered the turkey club sandwich togo...i'm going to eat that for lunch today...i'll let you know how it goes =)

my sister and her friend got some treats from the dessert case. i didn't taste them and they didn't complain....so that's a good sign. =)

it took a long time to get drinks. we had 3 people waiting at the coffee bar to get their drink. the turkish coffee was the quickest to come out. the other order was milk, something hot, and white chocolate something or other (also hot). i'd say...a good 10 minutes?

water...they were out of it...had to wait for someone to refill the outside jug...i was too lazy to get my water.

bathroom...there's only one...and no waiting area for it. kind of an awkward space if you have to wait. and i had to wait a while............

all in all..not a bad experience....but nothing amazing.....just ok. not the first place i'd think of when recommending food/coffee....but i'm also not from the SD area....so what do i know?

I was wandering around La Jolla looking for internet.  I remembered earlier in the week a UCSD graduate student had told me that he comes here a lot to read and study, so I decided to check it out.

I ordered an italian sandwich which was a pretty standard sandwich.  It does come with a bag of chips!

The atmosphere is nice--it does look like a living room with a few couches scattered amongst the tables and chairs.  They offer a wide selection of sandwiches, quiche, pasta, and also serve beer!

I was here specifically for the internet--the internet was pretty fast, so I was satisfied with that.

I have to say cafes in La Jolla are kind of lacking when you compare them to the ones in Seattle.  In the window of the Living Room they have all these signs that say that they were rated the top or best cafe in La Jolla.  I really hope this is not true because I really loved La Jolla--I just wish there were better cafes.

The first few times I've been here I didn't have anything to complain about.  The coffee is good (white chocolate mocha) and the blended green tea drink was amazing as well.  Hookah is hookah, you either like it or you don't.  I don't know what it is, but the staff isn't up to par.  I've had better service at wings and things compared to this place.

At night time, it does get crowded and the servers don't get to you half the time.  There have been a few times where they forgot half our orders.  I come here for the good company, of course, not the service.  It's just disappointing that their customer service has gone down.

    More like 3.5.
Delicious coffee, good hookah. Warm atmosphere.
I used to come here often, however i live far, and dislike driving , therefore i only stop by whenever I'm in the area. Never tasted the food and based on the reviews I'm not sure if its all that worth it.
If you plan on coming here at night time, make sure to arrive early (not sure if they take reservations) or else you will have to wait to get a spot.
Also the service isn't all that great, they charge gratuity, yet the "servers" are impossible to get a hold of, and they seem to be standing around talking to their friends. I had to get up from my seat and ask for my coffee about 3 times before i finally got it. Not sure if they have any customer service skills.
The place deserves a 4, however the service 2.5.

    Two words: cookie catastrophe

Casual coffee place. Nice to stop here while walking through all of the shops.

There is a tiny view of the ocean if you look really hard out the back windows.

It's usually pretty busy, but what do you expect in La Jolla?

I can't decide whether this place deserves 3 Stars or 4 ??? Hmm, well from all my experiences, I must say that I every time I went in, I always got good vibes from the staff and the regulars are cool people! The desserts are great! I'm not a big fan of the coffee or tea. I had to add waaay too much sugar! Nice play to go after a day of shopping or hanging at the beach!

Good atmosphere, nice place to stop for a snack or drink while visiting La Jolla downtown.  It was really relaxing sipping on a mimosa while looking out at the ocean.  I was pleasantly surprised by how inexpensive the drinks were during Happy Hour (at noon on a Saturday).  They have a big variety of deserts that looked amazing. I did not get a chance to try one however.

Stopped inside to watch the last quarter of a Charger game with some friends.

Picked up some coffee and a slice of NY Cheesecake to make it more interesting. I sat on the "best" chair at my table (the one that faces the TV and the door).

Cozy, a little pretentious and not the "manliest" place to hang out.

The employees seemed completely bored and almost irritated.
The food was not bad but not good either, more like boring.
The outdoor seating is uncomfortable because there is not enough room.  Inside was packed with students studying?
    No thanks.

    2.5...

We came here to sober up after a night of drinking.

I was concerned when I heard this was also a hookah lounge, but pleasantly surprised that when I walked in, it wasn't a smoke house.

There were tables out in the front patio, high chairs/tables in the front foyer area, and tables throughout the establishment. We decided on a high table in the front.

Tea was in order given our state. So, I was treated to a nice cup of peppermint tea and a chocolate brownie.

The tea was good; however, the brownie I could have done without. Luckily there were no nuts, but the brownie was rock hard! We agreed to have the staff warm up the brownie, but that really didn't do anything. At that point, I had lost my appetite.

Cool place to chill in downtown La Jolla with free wi-fi.

Stopped in for a coffee yesterday afternoon and LOVE all the cute seating options. Also, maybe the best mocha I ever had. Sooo...much...chocolate. Plus liquor!? Which was great since the friend I was with wanted a beer instead of coffee. Huge pastry selection. Service was a little weird, but otherwise it was everything I look for in a cafe.

My least favorite of the Living Rooms.

The location is great and the view of the ocean is pretty good. The baristas bother me and the customers are annoying. Definitely not the best place to study.

There is hookah upstairs and the place is open later in the night - so if that's what you are looking for - its not bad. Needless to say, I've never been able to stay more than 2 hours at this place - just not as welcoming as I want.

If you want the same name, but a better experience, try Living Room at SDSU. Otherwise there are plenty other  La Jolla spots to check out.

I hadn't been back for 3.5 years, but not much has changed. That's both good and bad I suppose. The chai tea latte is a bit larger than I remember and there was more stuff at the bottom that didn't get mixed in as well (although that's probably more barista dependent). I think they used to give the tea bags with the drink so as to make it stronger, but maybe that isn't the case anymore...

They still have a wide selection of drinks - both hot, cold, blended, teas, and coffees available with different seemingly random food selections (from hummus to tiramisu). I definitely remember coming here and trying a bunch of different things and finding all of them to be fine. I used to love getting a pot of tea for 2 ($5) and then drinking all of it while studying (an individual tea is $2 and I drink a lot tea, so this was a good deal for me).

It was comforting to see that the same types of people (students and people chatting) are still on the main floor. It was nice that the couches are still in the back as well. But the tables are still sticky with an unknown substance, the chairs are still rock hard, and some of the baristas are still rude. I wondered, but didn't check, if the bathroom was still kinda gross. Oh nostalgia.

I haven't been to the other locations, so I can't compare. However, I'd much rather come here than starbucks to study or hangout. Too bad the downtown La Jolla parking situation before 6pm is so tough. I hate having to move my car every hour or two.

**This review is for the Hooka Bar only**

If I could give this place -0.. I would. Last night my girlfriends decided to check this place out..before we even walked in we should have gotten the clue that this place was a joke considering this werewolf look a like ended up running into the brick wall cause he was too busy giving us the creepy look.

IF YOU ARE NOT FROM THE MIDDLE EAST BEWARE we're not and we got treated like dog crap. They wouldn't seat us where we wanted to sit. It took over 30 minutes for them to bring us our Hookah which wasn't even the flavor we wanted. The so called waitress argued with all of us stating that we ordered white peach which is a lie cause she recommended sweet melon and we said ok lets do that.  When asked to speak to Manager it was of course the guy standing next to her and he was taking her side.. Maybe if you stopped sucking his you know what he might have taken our side and apologize for the misunderstanding. THIS IS THE WORST CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE EVER!

$56 for two hookah's, waited 20 minutes for coal. One hookah came out 30 minutes before the other because they "forgot." I would understand if it was busy but there was only 4 occupied table and to top it all off, they got not one but both of the flavors incorrect. Unacceptable and definitely not recommended.

I go to coffee shops primarily to work on math or write. I stopped coming here about a year ago because they used to play very loud music and make the people studying feel unwelcome.

Recently, I stopped by again because I love the fact that they stay open all night and really like their soy chai latte with a shot of espresso, what I call a Dirty Hippie. A lot has improved.  I still don't love the coffee, but I really like the friendly new staff and the quieter music. The fact that this is one of the only places where I can study as late as I earns it the 5th star.

This is an excellent café. The atmosphere and energy is great. The clientele is interesting. They stay open late and don't mind if you stick around until they close (which is typically late as far as cafes go and even a bit after the posted time).

The Living Room has a great selection of teas. Their baristas are cool and Chris knows A LOT about coffees and teas. He is also very cool and very nice. It's always a pleasure to talk to him, the girls who work there and everyone else.

I typically drink some coffee or tea and get a refill or two. Once in awhile I get something to eat, but not too often. They don't seem to mind at all, too. I appreciate it because I typically go there with my laptop in order to get some work done and I do. They have strong, reliable wifi, too.

Recently, The Living Room added a downstairs bar. It hasn't really changed things too much. The people who visit seem to be fairly split 50/50 between alcohol drinkers and non-drinkers. I suppose it has only added to the mystique and charm of this place.

When I attended SDSU, I often went to The Living Room café by the school and I loved it. I met very interesting people there, had dynamic conversations and even got some work done. This location is just as good or better and certainly carries the torch the other one lit for me.

The cheesecake is very yummy! Plus, they have several Middle Eastern dishes that look really good and I'm looking forward to trying them some time soon. I almost ordered some shwarma last night!

The only thing I would improve in this place is the chairs. I hate to criticize such a great place, but some of the chairs are really hard. Plus, my favorite sofa in the back needs some repair because there is a tear in the cushion and a spring that always hits me the wrong way, right in my ass. Besides that, I wouldn't change a thing.

Thanks guys for creating an epic, iconic place for people to visit!

This place holds a little special place in the memories of myself and my wife... Just over 12 years ago while we were still going to UCSD we came out here for a first date... The set up was a little bit different, but the overall vibe was definitely the same.  Students coming in to study, friends coming to talk and hang out, as well as the random tourists stopping in for a drink... and a married couple coming in to reminisce about their first night here...

Drinks have always been solid here, though it looks like they sell a lot more alcohol and food here then I remember... It also has an upstairs area which I for sure never remembered...

Their cashier this past time was one who looks like he really loves his job.  He stops to make small talk with everyone coming through, and seems to have a sincere smile on his face... Didn't catch his name, but he's the guy with the long ponytail if you're looking for him....

The atmosphere is cute and it's a nice place to meet for coffee and chat. However, the food is not good and way over-priced for the quality. The cakes look good but are bland. Tiramisu does not taste like tiramisu ($6 for a little piece!). Salads are so-so and totally not worth the price (~$10). It gets crowded too and it's hard to find a spot to sit. :(

A nice alternative to Starbucks. Fairly decent coffee and we like the atmosphere.

We usually just hit it for afternoon coffee and for their cozy outdoor seating.   Can't comment on the food as we've never eaten here.  We always feel comfortable sippin' some java and people watching from the patio.

Not our most favorite coffee joint, but okay.

This place defines a bit of La Jolla for me, as I came here frequently during high school/middle school to do homework or just hang out. It's a bustling, yet very relaxed coffeehouse during the daytime complete with lavish, vintage-y couches and lounge chairs, and at night the hookah lounge opens upstairs where you can smoke and enjoy drinks and errything like that. Can't comment on the hookah as I do not smoke, but those I've gone with have reported good things.

This place isn't super cheap (it's La Jolla XD) but it's got a lot of character and I haven't found a place quite like it anywhere else yet. The chocolate milk is extremely chocolatey, cookies are very good, so are italian sodas, pizza is just okay. There is one bathroom on the bottom floor, not sure about the top. I believe there's an ATM as well.

Definitely stop by if you've never been :)

Came here on a Saturday night around 11 pm and it was really busy.

Waited in line, the cashier ringing us up was friendly and nice. There was 4 girls behind the counter. 1 doing cashier, 1 was making drinks and 2 was doing...I don't know. Well we waited for a really long time since only 1 girl was making the drinks. I was a little annoyed but whatever. When I walked in here I got high expectations for a delicious smooth soy chai latte. My first sip was very disappointing. IT tasted as if it was PURELY sugar ! Wow.

Also I had an impression it would be more of a quiet and classy kinda place since it was in La Jolla. Well its not. The crowd was mix but majority was a really old crowd. Upstairs in the hookah lounge was whatever also.

The drink was so horrible I probably only had 3 sips. and I had to purchase a large since they didn't have any other sizes for the lattes.

How do I give zero stars?  I had only had coffee here before and it was okay, though they messed up and gave us the wrong drink on the first try.  But today, when Cody's was closed, we stopped in the Living Room to grab a bite.  What a mistake.  The woman behind the counter seemed upset that we were ordering anything, food or drinks, and when I ordered a club, she tried to tell me that they didn't have one on the menu despite the glowing blue menu right behind her head.

The lousy experience didn't stop just at bad service.  When we got our food, we were both immediately put off.  My "club" looked like it had been made by a child.  It was soaking, dripping in mayo and yellow mustard and had been flattened, with the lettuce and tomato inside, in a panini press.  There was also avocado on it which looked rotten and old.

My friend ordered a chicken burrito.  This is California and burritos are plentiful and usually good everywhere.  Well, no here.  This one was clearly made days before and put in the fridge.  It too had been warmed (partially) in the panini press.  Inside was some mixture of beans and BBQ sauce or something smokey.  The guacamole on the side was half brown.  Disgusting!!!!

Stop here for a coffee but avoid the food.  Even if you are not picky you will not be happy that you have spent money of the food that they serve.

    Ehhhhhh.

I mean, I guess this place is decent. No.. not really.

Everything here is immensely overpriced in my opinion. Yes, I know we are in expensive land called La Jolla, but I expect for for the money I bust out. I remember last time I got a chai latte and I felt like I was sipping--no gulping--pure sugar. My insulin levels were probably skyrocketting. Once the latte cooled, I went over to the counter and added about half a cup of skim milk and tasted it. Still too sweet. OMG what was I drinking?

This coffee shop is just a little too chaotic for me. I think they have a decent amount of space, but the chairs aren't comfy and I kinda feel out of place sitting there with my laptop and books, even though a lot of people study here also...just something about the atmosphere makes me constantly consider leaving.

But I suppose if you're here just to chat or grab a cup of coffee, it's not too shabby, especially because it is walks away from the waters of the gorgeous beach. But there are certainly better places.

Only pro about this is the fact that it's open late, but honestly, I never come here that late anyways.

If I were in la jolla/PB, I'd be here if pannikin and bird rock burned down and I had no where to go.

This is a great place to study because they are open late if you can manage to find an open seat. Outlets are a bit limited, but if you have a long cord, or bring your own extension cord, it could probably work.

Their drinks are pretty good. I would recommend the California mocha (apricot flavored) though it can be a hit and miss depending on who makes it. I usually just get their house hazelnut creme coffee but it fails in comparison to einstein's vanilla hazelnut coffee. Drinks are on the pricier side, but not to the point where it will burn a hole in your wallet.

Save your money on the desserts. Not impressed.

So many negative comments! Not all places are for all people, and that is for sure. Probably the young college kids, hipsters, etc type of people is spot on for this coffee shop/lounge - as mentioned in other reviews, but that certainly does not describe me, and I love it here! So does my sweetie, and we find it a great place to relax. Even if we are in our 40's.

I like diversity, eclectic people and settings, new experiences (I'm not a Hookah smoker, but not afraid to hang out in the lounge) laid back atmospheres, and great views. Therefore this spot is just right for someone like me. Someone in no rush, and who makes their own good time.

Downstairs, you can enjoy a coffee, nice coffe-shop style meal, or delicious dessert or pastry. You don't have to rush out of here, can use the computer, linger, read, whatever.

Yes, it is decorated like grandma's living room. This is intentional. It is cozy, not chic' and comfy - not cool.  It is inviting and worn. Works for me.

If you are 18 or over, once finished downstairs, or just want to skip that part, walk upstairs to the ocean room and hookah lounge, as well as the cigar room. You may smoke your cigar there.  A nice glass of wine or port and a cigar by the rear window overlooking the ocean and listening to the good music - who can't love that? Ok - cigar is optional. So is the wine - have more coffee. ( I think the negative revierws may need more wine, less coffee)

After a while - aka after sunset, in our case - move over to the hookah lounge. Last Sunday, I had some flavorful passion iced tea and a delicious bowl of soup while people watching  folks on prospect to round out my relaxed time spent in the Living Room.

Were there lots of people half my age there? Oh yes. Was there one crazy old man who showed up wanting to play his xylephone and burn incense? Yes, again. (friendly staff said no...THANKS!)  Does hookah stink and ruin your experience? surprisingly - no.  Do I expect to pay high prices ANYWHERE in La Jolla? Yes. (remember  McCafe is down the street).

I wish we had one in Huntington Beach. You would find me there all the time.

I've been going here since I was in middle school and while I still make the occasional trip for nostalgic purposes, I gotta say it's really gone downhill over the years =/

The crowd especially has just ruined the cafe for me. What used to be a place for students, bookies, and lovers of coffee has now turned into hipstermania (the bad kind) and hookah town. The addition of the hookah bar upstairs has definitely been the main reason for the change in crowd.

The coffee and tea's still good though...as long as you go somewhere else to enjoy it. Get the London Fog and run away as fast as you can!

I will never come back here. I ordered an iced coffee. Pretty basic, right? The barista pours HOT coffee over ice and hands it to me. The ice melts and the liquid is still warm, so I have to get up and ask them for another cup of ice. I pour in the warm liquid into the cup of ice and see a BUG! After I complain for a new cup, they hand me another "iced coffee" that was still warm. I had to use another cup of ice cubes just to get it cold.

The place itself isn't tiny and it's decorated like an old person's living room. Felt dirty.

Great hookah, delicious coffee drinks and tea. Never have I tried the food, I will next time. This place is very cute, love the way it's set up. The only con is the service ! You get gratuity on your tab , but the sever does nothing . When you ask for something they look at you like you're a burden. Very rude!

My friends seem to love this place and praise it to the high heavens so I figured I would finally cave and go with them. It was uncomfortably packed. I ordered a small cafe mocha and then waited by the bar.

Seasons passed. Grass grew. Uppity Frenchwomen came and left, getting their drinks before I did. My friends got free drinks cuz one of them knew somebody who worked there. I bitterly watched them receive their lemonade and hot chocolate and run off upstairs to the muted solace of the hookah lounge where unwashed men blew smoke rings. I was left with my thoughts.

Finally, the barista who'd been making empty eye contact asked me what I'd ordered. When I told him a cafe mocha he promptly made a large one for me bc I'd had to wait unreasonably long. It didn't look like my order had ever been passed to him.

As he handed me my drink, the blonde who'd taken my order looked at him and muttered something in disapproval. He explained that I'd had to wait a long time. She responded to him with: "Unacceptable. Unacceptable."

Okay so first of all she seemingly neglects to pass my order to the barista, then she allows me to wait ages without explanation or apology. And THEN she scolds the barista for making it up to me by giving me my drink in the next size up?

    Ew. DISLIKE.

PS. The drink was good. The blonde was mean.

    FOR HOOKAH BAR ONLY!

This place was TERRIBLE!  DINGY RAT HOLE!  My girlfriends and I decided to check this place out on a whim, and were in shock at how horrible our waitress treated us from START TO FINISH . We arrived sometime around 10pm, and asked to be seated outside. Our waitress told us that we'd have to wait until a table became available and to keep OUR eyes open for when a table was ready (um, isnt that your job?- strike 1)
She then sat us at an uncleaned table and thrust 3 water bottles at us. I asked her to recommend a flavor for the hookah , as I'd never had it before and my girlfriends hadn't ever had it at this venue and she gave us 2 selections from which to choose from: WHITE PEACH or SWEET MELON. We agreed on SWEET MELON and away she went to put our order in. 30 MINUTES later..after we start noticing that tables around us are being served who came in well after we'd been seated, (who were all coincidentally MIDDLE EASTERN )  we were then served with a WHITE PEACH hookah.
When we told our waitress that we didn't order that flavor we were answered with an attitude and argumentative comments. After going in circles with the 'you said this, you said that ' game, I requested to speak to the manager who just happened to be standing there witnessing the entire exchange. His reply? " What is she doing wrong? "
Not only was his reaction appalling and unprofessional, I'd be willing to bet he's getting "serviced" by that sharpie eyebrow-ed bitch.
" This is what you call customer service? " , I asked  to which I  got a dopey eyed clueless look as my answer.  That was it.  My friend requested her credit card back and we bounced. WORST SERVICE EVER. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!

Drinks are alright, but can we have a hand for the most genial staff ever?   Goodness gracious.

Please, don't feel the need to say hi, or even smile.  I am about to hand you some of my money, after all.

I have been going here for years and i am just now writing a review..

Great place to chill and drink your beverage with NO time limits what soever. Also try to get a seat outside so you can people and car watch or near the back window facing the ocean for a fantastic view.

Most of the time i just get a regular HOT tea and smoke a cigar outside with the homies..lol

This is a cute place to study with eclectic furniture and artwork. There's an ocean view, but it's very difficult to find parking in Downtown La Jolla and often times its hard to find a table here because it's so crowded.

If you don't like noise when you study, I don't recommend going here. The coffee is average but a little pricey and the customer service is sub-par. It's worth checking out to see if you like it, but it's not somewhere I would go regularly. Also, the bathroom is sketchy as hell.

Expensive as all hell. $6 Stella's are a bit of an outrage.

Good coal situation with the hookahs, though they weren't very strongly flavored.

The bathroom is one stall, multi-gender. Expect delays.
