love littlejohn's!

can get really crowded, but the line always moves fast. biggest problem would be finding a place to sit.

try ordering the cisco (off-menu): roast beef, coleslaw, cheddar cheese, bacon, a hotdog (you heard me), and thousand island on pumpernickel. so freakin good! rumor has it they took it off the menu because the profit margin on that baby is lower than most, but 7/10 times they'll make it for you if requested.

also try the pepper-parm! and for the love of god, do not forget about their delicious muffins.

This place was to me just another overrated corner spot, but when they changed their menu back in early 2009, they gained my respect.  They have some really great wraps.  I had a curry chicken one that was great!  It had like currants and all kinda yummies in it and it was just delish!

Before the menu change, the only thing I counted on was a solid muffin :).  Although the dutch apple muffin is good, very good, in fact.  I am HOOKED on the pina colada.  It is the most wonderful muffin ever!!  It's huge, soft and plump and full of pineapple bits and coconut.  So flavorful and never oversweet.  It's a solid 5 star, above all else :)

Sandwiches here have their own special kind of amazing. I call it "nostalgia sauce." Nothing like returning to Cville, going out with your ladies, and hitting up this place. We'll even eat it outside in the rain if it's too crowded inside. Glad to see that they haven't dropped the tortilla chips off the sandwiches.

Can you walk by without hearing "YEAH-AH!" being shouted? Unlikely, but that's all part of the late night post-bar fest at Little John's. PS, they're good for lunch during the day too.

Five Easy Pieces, Onion Wheel, Wild Turkey - they all hit the spot.

Points off since they're not quite a "new york delicatessen", and they have nothing on Take It Away's house dressing, but all things considered, you haven't graduated unless you've been here.

I was on my though Charlottesville when I decided to stop on the corner for a bite at Little John's. I was not disappointed. Stopping by at lunch hour on Sunday  found it pretty much empty. There were more employees then people eating.

On recommendation I had the Five Easy Pieces. Which was amazing, good portion size, excellent flavor and the chips that come with the sandwich although bland by themselves. If you add Salsa, for 50 cents or so you get blown away with the flavor. My brother went to UVA , and was always telling me about the good prices, and good food no matter the day or time. I am very sad they don't have one here in Dayton Ohio.

It was worth the side trip off of 64. I'd recommend it to anyone near the area.

My only complaint about this place is that it is too small and there just aren't enough seats to accommodate everyone who wants a slice of Little John goodness.

I ordered the Sailor. Thinly sliced roast beef, with knockwurst, mustard, sauerkraut, and thousand island dressing all between two slices of rye bread. Delicious! I would have liked to have regular potato chips, but I guess corn chips are their thing. Doesn't matter their selection of specialty sandwiches was amazing. I could not decide what I wanted. I only finally made my decision when I got to the front and I spit out the first sandwich that came to mind. I don't think I made the wrong choice, it only gives me more reason to come back and try them all.

there is some special mayo used on the wild turkey that makes it delicious!

There are two certainties in Charlottesville: Terrible football and 2am sandwiches at LJ's.

That's right. Sorry, Al Groh, but you lost me at Sea of Orange. Just let me flask up my bourbon and leave me alone. When it comes to iconic Charlottesville institutions, I'm sticking with the two J's: TJ and LJ. If Jefferson were alive today, I think he'd enjoy a nice hot Five Easy Pieces after an all night wine binge and a few tokes on his peace pipe. Where else can you can grab a post-frat sub in the middle of the night, go home, continue drinking and come back for hot breakfast at dawn to the same joint? It gives me the warm and fuzzies just thinking about it. Not that I necessarily miss wearing flip flops in the shower, but I'd do it all over again for one last bite of a Nuclear on wheat with a side of college.

I was just thinking of this place right now because I will be visiting Charlottesville in a few days as an alum and I can't wait to grab a sandwich here!  So many late night yummy sandwiches here.  I think I spent one summer in Charlottesville and tried every single sandwich on the menu.  I only one I would recommend avoiding is the vegetarian sandwich...MY FAVORITE THINGS TO ORDER HERE- Lemon poppyseed muffin (hope they still have that) and 5 easy peices sandwich.

If you asked me what I mainly remember from Littlejohn's, it would be: hot sandwiches, nice clean interior, and not enough seating. I remember being pissed when they stopped including chips with the sandwiches.  If I did a trip back to Cville, this would not be the first place I'd run to; just down the Corner is Micheal's Bistro or Cafe Europa, now that's some good stuff!

I've lived in the area for 20 years.  LittleJohn's is BY FAR the best deli in Charlottesville.  It's not even close, really.  If you want a sandwich, this is the place to go.

They have a very full, very creative menu of sandwiches, salads, and all kinds of deli items.  My regular sandwich is the Wild Turkey.  I could eat it anytime.

That is another great thing about LittleJohn's, it is open 24 hours, which is very rare in the area.  That makes it a great place to go after a late movie, or a night at the bars ;-)

Atmosphere is great, although it gets quite crowded at lunchtime when the students are in town.

Ah, Little John's.  A Corner staple for sure and the destination of late night drinking cures for many a student.  The thing about Little John's is that unless you go during normal hours (which in my entire college career, I don't think I did...) there is a ridiculous line, and while the sandwiches are delicious, you will probably fall asleep/need to pee/die while waiting to get one.  Quality-wise, I think Take It Away has them beat, but Little John's is such a blue-blooded institution at the University that you have to love it.

Very, Very good sandwich shop located on the Corner, right in the heart of UVA.

Very affordable, large, and delicious sandwiches- plus 2 dollar Sam Adams.  Yes, you read that correctly.  With these prices and quality, Littlejohns is justifiably popular with both students and townies alike.

Grab a great sandwich, and a couple of cheap beers.  You won't be disappointed.

Three words: FIVE EASY PIECES
I've wondered in here many a nights after a corner crawl and even during the day. the good news is that the sandwiches hold up during the day so it's not just good because you're wasted. cheap and good! they were toasting subs before subway and quiznos caught on!

I'd give Littlejohn's four stars because the last time I went they had gotten rid of my favorite sandwich (The Italian Stallion) and added a bunch of frou-frou sandwiches involving fancy bread, but I feel like I've got to counterbalance the person who gave the place two stars because they didn't like the veggie sandwich.  Rating Littlejohn's on their veggie sandwich is like rating Dairy Queen on their hot dogs.  The good sandwiches here have a ton of fatty meat on them and are best consumed after approximately 7,000 beers.

Most of the sandwiches are pretty good, but once I found the Italian Stallion, I stayed with it permanently.  Luckily, the last time I visited C'ville one of the longer-tenured employees was working and remembered what was on the sandwich, but I fear the next time I go back I'm going to have to stray to some other type of pastrami sandwich.  One look at the menu will tell you that the place isn't a real New York deli, so I don't really understand the offense people take to the name.  Dude might be from New York.  They have sandwiches.  Give him a break.

The Italian Sub is just the best.

And one pays $6 for it.  Now THAT's what I'm talking about!

I remember eating here during college after being out drinking in the middle of the night.  But it holds up to lunchtime needs as well.

Never change, Littlejohn's! (You haven't in at least 10 years so keep it up)

What a nice well run sandwich shop with a pleasant but simple decor. I liked it so much I went again the next day for lunch on my trip to UVA. I don't know about its authenticity, but the sandwiches I ordered were assembled quickly, looked great, and were very inexpensive. It made the dry tasteless mess of a sandwich I got at Revolution Soup down the street feel like the stupidest purchase I made on my trip. I can't understand why someone wouldn't like this place for only $5 a sandwich.

My only complaint and the reason I can't give it a perfect score is they go a little light on the meat. That said, I always felt full after the sandwich.

Littlejohn's sports a huge chalkboard menu on its back wall, filled with mouth-watering descriptions of cold subs, grilled sandwiches, and odes to hoagies. The chipotle chicken, filled with flavorful, shredded dark meat laced with bright, smoky heat and topped with provolone and extraneous bacon, releases tantalizing juices on its paper wrapper with each bite, satisfying the hungriest of bellies. The bum steer, piled with roast beef, Muenster, and onions,  is a bit bland for my palate, but the beef is nicely marbled and the sandwich solidly constructed. And, the traditionally seasoned deviled eggs (no dill, rosemary, or curry) are unexpectedly delicious. Flirt a bit with the guys behind the counter, and slide into a seat at a table that has been receiving patrons for 30 years. Recommended.

Little Johns is one of my favorite places in Charlottesville. They're open 24 hours and they are one of the only places to get food after 10pm in city. The sandwiches are great and it's very inexpensive. I personally love the white pizza and the philly cheese steak.

Little Johns is not the greatest place in the world, but it's great for what it does: serve good food at anytime of the day for a low price. I appreciate that greatly.

One of my old roommates ate every single different sandwich featured at Littlejohns. That was... something.

Being the only 24-hour food place on the Corner wins huge points, and the sandwiches aren't too bad -- the 5 easy pieces, Italian sub, and Sampson are all winners... and really, just about anything on their menu is, depending on your state of inebriation. Just be sure to plan around the 2am bar/frat rush, or you'll likely be sober by the time you get your food.

I think my friend, an alumna of UVa, decided to make the road trip from Arlington to Charlottesville purely because of a sandwich. Before we even left the DC area, I was hearing stories of the Five Easy Pieces, a sandwich she had noshed on two decades ago while she attended Jefferson's college creation. A New York deli it ain't, but that doesn't mean it's not good. The false advertising does rather kill it a bit though.

I had a vegetable sandwich on a pita. Fine, but I found myself adding hot sauce just to get a little more flavor. Plus, it was tiny. That alone told me the owner had probably visited NYC only in his dreams. For a side, you get tortilla chips, the kind that usually gets served with a fake cheese sauce, but here comes to you stark naked.

My friend loved her Five Easy Pieces, so for that reason alone it was worth making her happy. But if my veggie sandwich, which the sandwich genie behind the counter recommended, is the best they've got, then Littlejohn's needs some help with their sandwich designs. College kids may gobble up the low prices, and nostalgia may maintain the memories. I guess that's all a college restaurant needs to stay alive. Because it ain't the flavor.

My wife and I were back in Charlottesville for our 10 year UVA reunion and no trip to C-ville is complete without a trip to Littlejohn's.

1.  OVERALL.  This is a great restaurant.  It is my benchmark when I look at other deli's.  Great sandwich selection, great prices and they sell beer.  What more could you need?

2.  SANDWICH SELECTION.  Two huge chalkboards hang from the ceiling covered in sandwiches.  Subs, barbecue, deli meats, you name it, they have it.  Great combinations, there isn't anyone who spent time at UVA who doesn't have at least three favorite sandwiches here.

3.  PRICE.  Two great sandwiches, french fries and drinks for $12.  Hard to beat.

4.  PERSONAL FAVORITES.  Any of these are great; the nuclear sub, five easy pieces, wild turkey, and the pizza sub.  Good times.

Note:  I have Celiac disease and follow a wheat / gluten free diet.  I asked them for my favorite sandwich, the nuclear sub, served on lettuce and they were cool with that.  Gotta' love it.

One of the triumvirate of places on the corner  You Must Eat at, this is The Drunk Spot of Charlottesville.

When you're a First Year or Second Year (that's Freshman and Sophomore to less pretentious schools) you might see everyone you "know" here while destroying your pigskin (cut up hotdogs on a sandwich... they call it knockwurst but who are we kidding) or anything else.

I used to live 200 yards from this place, and it's still good sober.

Little John's is an iconic deli on the Corner that every UVA student has probably been to, or will go to, at least once. It's open all night and they have a chalkboard menu featuring their huge selection of freshly prepared sandwiches (hot and cold). I also remember a particularly memorable and delicious corn muffin that was nearly the size of my head. It may be hard to get a table here, but I think a lot of people just linger outside to gnaw on their sandwiches anyway.

I give it 4 stars because it's open 24 hours. That takes mad skill and patience, especially in a college town. Around 2:30am, this place has a line outside the door, which is a little ridiculous. The only way to tolerate this line is to be just as drunk as the people in front of you, I guess. At other times, this place has a nice selection of sandwiches, most of which are pretty good, and there are plenty of places to sit. The only times I've ever seen extreme lines are around 2-3am. Other times, it's manageable. It's also a nice place to pick up a quick bite to eat between classes or after a long, long study session at clemons/alderman/any library.

Great Late Night or Hangover next morning place. They have great hot and cold sandwiches. The line is huge at around 2-2:30am when the bars are closing. From experience...do not be drunk and stupid at the corner where it's located because there are a lot of people in line and most likely cops :)

Really great sandwiches and...even better cookies!  I save up all my change to reqard myself with those things.  The white chocolate macademian nut cookie is the best!  The salads are fresh and the workers are a little nutty in a funny, friendly way.  My friend loves this place and eats sandwiches here frequently.

Not even close to a real New York Deli.  They don't know how to scoop a bagel - that's #1.  #2 is the complaint with most Charlottesville sandwhich shops - they go over the top.  Just give me lots of turkey, lots of roast beef, and lets call it a day.
