Ah, Lil' Tavern. Most of my friends look at me like I eat boogers when I say that I've got a craving for a bag o' six. I'm lucky to be within close proximity of one of the last remaining Little Taverns, which happens to be at 6414 Holabird Ave. in limbo somewhere between Canton and Dundalk. The Eastern Ave. one has a sign in the window saying that they are closed for renovations, but they are in fact closed for good, as is the one in Laurel. Sad. My mom introduced me to their burgers when I was a wee lad. She said her and her hippie friends used to call them "death burgers", which I guess is because of the indigestion one possibly gets from eating them, something I've experienced only recently. Prior to my bouts with acid reflux, I've experienced only satisfaction when unwrapping three, teeny burgers at a time, which are all connected, and then just gobbling them up in short order. Where else at 4 in the morning can you get 6 lil' burgers prepared by a guy/girl who shortly before you walked in was picking at the methamphetamine scabs on their arm, get solicited by a nodding hooker, and get asked in the parking lot if you would like to buy a plunger and a phone that had been ripped from a wall unit. I will sorely miss this place.
This place is dirty, and located in a strange part of town. The hamburgers are steamed and the condiments weigh more than the actual meat that's on your burger. The burgers are tiny, and by tiny I mean 1 1/2 bites. That's why you "buy 'em by the bag," as the slogan states.
Typical purchase is 6 lil' ones and a soda. Either to go, or seated at one of their dirty tiny tables that seat roughly 2 1/2 people. The burgers come toped with barely cooked chopped onions and doused in a healthy dose of mustard and ketchup.
Why did I rate it 5 stars?? I just love this place. So much so that when I venture to Bal'more to visit friends, every now and then I'll make the trek over to eat lunch *by myself* because no one else will go with me. Not even to keep me company.
Which is why I wasn't suprised to find that I was first to review this place.
Why you might want to come here? If you're the type who loves White Castle, you'll understand the appeal. Little Tavern is the DC equivalent. At one time there were around 30 shops in the dc/va/md region, now there are only two. The restaurants are landmarks though, there's one on wisconsin just up from m street - the white cottage looking building with a green roof.
I'm going to miss this institution. If you're curious, I recommend you visit quick before they're all gone... :(
