    CORNMEAL CRUST. YES PLEASE.

I usually HATE crust, I always let my husband eat it...not at Little Star....

    SO GOOD.

I really enjoy Little Star Pizza and I usually go to the Western Addition location since it's closer but I would have to say that I much prefer this Mission location. Not because it's in the Mission (which isn't my favorite neighborhood) but because the wait is usually shorter and their restaurant has windows which really make the place less stuffy and more airy. Also, I like that the place has an actual waiting area instead of having to eat my dinner with peoples butts always bumping into our table from the people all squeezing into the small waiting area in the Western Addition location.

In short, this place has great pizza just like the other location and if it were closer to my house, I'd be slightly happier seeing as that I prefer the actual dining room at the Mission location.

The "little star" deep dish pizza is by far top 5 pizza I have ever tried. The crust wasnt overly puffy filling the pizza and letting little room for the toppings! And it is made out CORNMEAL!!! Yes, cornmeal. And it is o so o m g fantastic!

The toppings were great. Fresh and soo soo flavorful!

    Gooey ooey awesomeness!

One down fall was the garlic bread everyone raves about. The garlic clove was as big as a babies fist. Meh on the size meter...better than WTF but not as good as OMG WTF this is amazing.

And the bread that came with it was a tad stale.

But the true star was the pizza. Cannot get better. One of the best in the city for deep dish for sure :)

Came here with my girlfriend  and had the "Little Star" deep dish pizza between the two of us.

    Taste 4/5:
Pretty good. There's not many deep dish pizza places around the Bay and let alone a decent one. However, I would have to rate this below Zachary's. Trying Patxi's next month and will change my ratings accordingly.

    Extras:
While I would have given the taste a 4, but the entire experience was a 2. On our bill, we were charged a fee called "Healthcare Surcharge". We asked our server what that was, 1) he wasn't able to answer it fully to our understanding, he seemed nervous about it 2) from what we could make of it, it seems to be a health charge that  they have to pay their employees mandated by the city. That's fine and dandy but I went to Candy Bar down the street and did not have the same charge. If they only have this mandate for pizza places, I will eat my words and change my ratings.

After hearing such amazing things about Little Star Pizza, I was excited about having my first deep-dish pizza.

We were seated immediately (it was around lunch time) which was nice, but, I the tables were too close for comfort. I, for one, do not enjoy eating next to other people (that just how I do).

The one thing I love is the fact that they have Earth Friendly straws made of paper!!!

We ordered a deep dish pepperoni pizza which was pretty good! However, I was not a fan of the crust. I'm more of a doughy crust person.

The service was average. The man that served us seemed like he wanted to be elsewhere and did the bare minimum of someone who works in customer service.

    Personally, I wouldn't be back.

I am addicted to this place. I never ate pizza with a corn meal crust until I came to this place. The deep dish pizzas are amazing. I've had several pizza's but my favorite was a specialty pizza they had and it had chicken, bbq sauce, with sliced apple in it. I wish they would bring that pizza back. I've never had a bad pizza from them.

Me and my friend were looking for a trendy place to eat and good food.  Walking by Little Star we decided to check it out.
The first time I ate here was really good, the food and service. As well as this time.  I am server too so I know sometimes the place gets crazy busy.  Our server had an attitude and wasn't friendly at all.  She came to our table only once to check on us.  I was drinking a glass of wine and she never came back to ask if I wanted another one. At the end I needed to ask for the desert menu because she didn't seem very interested to bring to us.

After all, we had a good time, good food but not a very nice nor friendly service!

Hello world of Yelp!  I have been gone for so long!  It's almost one month... that's a long time to be gone....

What better way to come back than to write about one of the best deep dish joints in San Francisco.

Little Star pizza with sausage.  YUM!  Oh I just love how the cheese gets so stringy and the flavors just blend so perfectly in my mouth.  AND, I totally love the cornmeal crust.  Little Star, you know what you're doing.

But this little slice of heaven will cost you about an hour to an hour and a half wait time.  Fortunately, both of the Little Star restaurants that I've been to also have a bar, which totally helps with the long wait time.

In addition to waiting an hour or so for your seat, it takes about another 30 minutes for them to bake the pie.  Uhg, at this point, I'm pretty much starving.  So we ordered the spicy hot wings.  Alright, some of you may know this about me.. but I'm not a fan of saucy wings.  I know, call me a weirdo.  I like my sauce on the side for some reason.  However, these bad boys are the only saucy wings I'll eat.  That has to say something right?  They are delicious!  A pang of flavor.  A nice hit of spice.  Mm!  It's pretty much perfection right there.

At the end of our meal, I pretty much feel like I have a 7 month old food baby growing inside me.  It is not a pleasant feeling.  Load up on the Tums... you'll probably need it.  But trust, it's well worth it.

    Happy eating!

what i ordered... classic deep dish (w/ sausage, mushroom, onion and green bell peppers)

overall pizza pie was just ok, the crust was made of cornmeal, tasted like sliced cornbread toasted too hard on one side so it crumbles on a bite. sauce on top was good just like zachary's, mushroom was so good and so much of it, cheese was the most minimal i've eaten and/or seen in a deep dish, clump's of sausage were nowhere to be found but i did tasted some pellet sized one's the size of tic tac's.

ambiance... good(warm, dim lit atmosphere with clean restroom)
service... good(nice and smiley but reserved)
    cost... $$+(typical)

I've always ordered to go and loved their pizzas. This a the first time I've dined in and really enjoyed it! Sure it was a little crazy busy, but the glass of wine made the wait not so bad. Overall, I'd do it again and it's a nice alternative to a quick pick up and go.

For some reason I always end up getting thin crust pizza at this Little Star location and Deep Dish at the one on Divis.

Tonight I tried the Pesto Chicken Thin Crust. It can't compare to any deep dish pie, in my opinion, but it's still damn good. The pesto was lightly drizzled on top of the chicken, peppers, mushrooms, and onions, giving it just the right amount of pesto flavoring. Don't get me wrong, I love pesto, but I find that pesto pizzas are often overly drenched in the stuff. This one was perfect. Two of us split a small and were satisfied, but not overly full by the end ($18.75).

On a previous visit, I also tried the White Pie which has a garlic olive oil base with mozzarella, roasted zucchini, fresh tomatoes, and feta on thin crust. Delicious, though I think I will stick to Cheese Board and Arizmendi for non-tomato based pizzas from now on. Little Star has too many other better options.

Overall: $36 after tax and tip for one small thin crust pizza, one soda, and one beer. A little pricy, but not unreasonable.

Went here with a good friend to try their deep dish. The pizza was delicious! I was impressed with the cornmeal pizza crust which gave it a sweet taste. However, if you are a deep dish snob, it won't come close to a Chicago pie. But if you are in need of a fix, this is definitely the spot to go.

The only draw back was the waiting area. The place is understandably packed on a weekend night. So expect to be packed in like sardines until your table is ready. Although they have a bar area, it's extremely uncomfortable to be around.

The good thing is you can order your deep dish (usually a 40 min cooking time) and have it ready by the time you sit down.

Please don't bring large groups though. This place is most enjoyed in the company of a friend/partner or a couple of other people.

This is so good!  Omg, this is so good!  This was what my friend and I kept saying all night long as we share the White Pie thin crust pizza.  So full of flavor - I may have found the pizza I can eat over and over and over again.

We also got the garlic bread - which I always do whenever I'm at Little Star.  That bulb of garlic just gets me.

Discovery of the night:  Ginger beer!

I've been to this location three times for takeout so far.  Most adults like it but I fed it to my Sunday school kids and they didn't like the healthy tomato, spinach and cheese.  I think they were looking for bread, cheese and meat (i.e. Costco).  SIGH!

    Love the cornmeal crust!

We on a Sunday afternoon and we were sitting right away. We order half Classic & Little Star large deep dish pizza for lunch. The pizza was really good, crust was perfectly made and crunchy. The wait for the pizza was well worth it. The Valencia location is pretty easy to find -- between 15th and 16th Valencia in the corner.

Love this place and will definitely go back!

Garlic bread came as a roasted garlic piece, butter, and slices of french bread. The first thought that came to mind was... "What's this...". It took a few minutes to connect the dots and figure out it's half a piece of garlic and butter. First try was trying to spread the butter and garlic individual onto the bread, which was too much work. The next thing that came to mind was why not just place the garlic pieces into the butter and use the bread to dip into it. Genius. It works.

Amazing deep dish pizza. The pizza crust was thin, but nicely golden brown and crispy. The next layer of the pizza was the cheese followed by a mixture of toppings and tomato sauce. The combination was amazing and it was great!

Service was great also. The waitress was attentive and did checkups at regular intervals to refill water and ask if everything was good.

First off, have to say I was never a big deep dish fan. However, the reviews looked good so decided to give it a shot.

Let me tell you, this place changed my mind about deep dish---makes me wonder, maybe I was eating at all the wrong places before, which gave deep dish a bad name for me.

We ordered the Little Star deep dish with sausage (upon recommendation by the bar tender who was super nice) and was not disappointed.  In fact, I really enjoyed it.  The ingredients were well balanced---tomato wasn't too acidic, cheese was the right amount, and the spinach and sausage went well together. Best part was the crust was crispy at the bottom, and wasn't doughy or soggy like some deep dish pizzas can get.

Would I go back? Yes.  However, next time I'm bringing my own honey (which they didn't have) to go on my cornmeal crust... If u haven't tried it, it's delicious!!!!!

I tried this place for the first time the other day and was positively impressed. I'd never had cornmeal crust before and while it was good, I'd say on balance I prefer traditional pizza dough. That's my taste, though, not a reflection on the restaurant. Given that they do cornmeal crusts, I thought their execution of them was pretty good. I had a veggie pizza and overall, liked it.

The salad was pretty good as well: a real salad, with fresh-tasting ingredients.

    Service was good, too.

Overall, the pizza wasn't in the top 10% I've had in the Bay area, but it was very solid and certainly well within the top 40%, so definitely above average.

Having been back several times now, I maintain my stance that Little Star is far tastier than Zachary's over in East Bay. But, I will admit that the cornmeal crusts are a love-it-or-hate-it kind of thing. I find them reminiscent of croutons: airy, crunchy, and almost cookie-like in texture. Personally, I like this more than I do regular crusts (which I'll often toss away), but I know a fair number of people who dislike it, and/or consider it too "healthy".

Not that they don't suffer from a slight saltiness problem though. While the flavor is great, and the first slice is usually fine, the salt starts creeping up on you by the time you hit your second or third piece. Fortunately, I'm usually comfortably full after a single slice, so this becomes a somewhat moot issue for me.

Waits can be a bit long around dinner time, with my longest having been almost 45 minutes. Pro tip: order in line about 30 minutes before you're to be seated. That way, your deep dish pizza will be there to greet you by the time you sit down at your table!

If you'd rather wait, or manage to be seated quickly, and want an appetizer, the garlic bread is a popular, and interesting, choice: a loaf of sourdough is served alongside butter, and an entire glove of roasted garlic, resulting in a DIY garlic bread of sorts.

The deep dish pizza at Little Star is fabulous-- the buttery cornmeal crust is what makes it truly standout in comparison to other pies.

The ambiance of this location fits the vibe of the Mission quite well-- artsy, dimly lit, and packed with loyal fans.

My friend and I ended up ordering  a small deep dish, which is the perfect size for two  hungry people. The garlic bread is tasty-- served with a whole head of roasted garlic which you can rub on your bread with butter.

I live down the street from the Divis Little Star, so there's really no reason for me to ever venture out to the Mission for Little Star.  But when Delfina's Pizzeria--which is apparently different from Delfina, as I was snobbily apprised of by staff members at each "separate" establishment--couldn't hold the big homecoming party of a certain gallerina-turned-second-curator-in-command in a certain Southern state whose state university's mascot is an octopus for some baffling reason, we moseyed on up Valencia because, well, Little Star is a certain kind of it.

I had what I always have at LS, the vegetarian special or whatever.  There were many of us, and I did some stuff I hadn't done in a while.  I didn't follow up on any of it, but I was a gentleman and walked a certain lady to the 16th Street BART station because, well, I'm a gentleman.  And I care about people, even if I don't know them and may never see them again.  And it's 16th Street, after all.

But because we were all being prim and proper and because I was doing less scarfing down than I normally do, there was pizza left over.  And exactly three of us lived in San Francisco, so I got the veggie-pizza take-home box.  So as I rode the 22 home and tried not to think about how badly I had to pee and how long it would take me to walk home from the corner of Fillmore and Oak in the cold and with a remarkably smaller or less able or whatever bladder than I've ever known, I thought about how much I would enjoy this leftover pizza.  And how I always seem to screw things up in the least awful way possible.

So here's to attractive, affable artists and a certain adorable nephew who confuses the words "crime" and "chime," rather habitually.

So good!  So mofucking good.  My coworker took us to this little gem one evening and it was perfect.  Small place that is intimate but busy.  Attentive waitress.  The beer was perfect temperature... almost icy, but not quite.  Perfectly complimented the piping hot pizza.  I'm typically not a fan of Chicago style pizza, but my world was turned upside down with this pizza.  The sauce and tomatoes were so flavorful.  The crust was crunchy and chewy and just amazing.  I typically leave the crust, but I ate every last crumb off my plate.  No shame, I also snagged the last slice.

Little Star: Chicago style pizza in the heart of the Mission. The cornmeal crust is what makes this pizza special; it's a little bit pastry-like in it's light and flaky nature, but that cornmeal grounds it in being a savory treat.

The deep dish is where it's at, in my opinion. Order a can of PBR or two,  half half Little Star and Mediterranean (the one with feta) and you've got yourself a chilled out neighborhood dinner.

The special pizza is usually pretty good (often seems more appropriate as a thin crust pizza). Last couple of times I've gone they've featured toppings like prosciutto/heirloom tomatoes and broccoli raab.

I've had the deep dish at both locations.  They are pretty good but cornmeal crust is not a Chicago thing as one writer summized.  There is one place that uses it (in Chicago).  My favorite Chicago pizza is Lou Malnati's that offers a regular (flour) or a choice of their (non-cornmeal) buttercrust.  The buttercrust is the best..... anyway, if you haven't already guessed, I'm recommending that Little Star offer an alternative crust choice.  As you can see, my choice would be a flour-based buttercrust. Also it could use just a bit more in toppings for the price$.

Please Little Star; listen to these reviews!!!

Maybe I am just being nostalgic but Zachary's in Berkeley is much better. I want my deep dish pizza to be so heavy that after two slices, I have be to carried home.

This was more like deepish pizza than deep dish. Yeah the corn meal crust was a nice touch but I got bored with it rather quickly. Toppings were ok--we had the garlic, sun dried tomatoes, fresh basil. But I could barely taste the garlic and the basil was barely noticeable.

We also had the wings (pass on those) and the salad, which I thought was really amazing.

Service was great and parking on a Sun was easier than I thought.

A good meal but it does not knock Zachary's off its throne.

1/2 of the Dream Team had their 24th birthday yesterday, and picked up pizza to go. She got the Little Star, and they included a slice of cheesecake.

I really loved the thick cheese, acidic tomato sauce, and punchy garlic. But the crust reminded me of Chuck E Cheese. Straight up. (It tastes NOTHING like Chuck E Cheese pizza, I swear, it just reminded me of eating pizza at Chuck E Cheese. Probably because we were eating it for a birthday celebration and there was a gigantic cake and my roommate was singing.)

And their cheesecake.... oh... my.... that was some of the best I've had in SF. Well done, Little Star.

Little Star is the best pizza in the Mission and only 3 blocks from my house.  Their deep dish pizza is fantastic.  I took a friend visiting from Chicago who is an admitted deep-dish pizza snob and even she was impressed enough to recommend it to her friends back home when they visit SF.  The wait for a table can be unpredictable, and it can get really loud in there, but the take out option is always fast and easy.

Yup, this place definitely lives up to the hype.  Tip: coming in the middle of a weekend afternoon is a score -- Joe and I came in around 3 or 3:30 pm on a Sunday afternoon, and there was no wait, and just a few other tables worth of patrons.  (I tried coming here on Friday w/some buddies, the wait was about an hour).

We ordered the Classic thin crust pizza, and it was delicious: the sauce had the right amount of sweetness (definitely prefer my pizza a bit on the sweeter side), the crust was unbelievably good without being too doughy, and the toppings were fresh and crisp.  Yum.

Definitely a contender for some of the best SF pizza I've had to date!

I've never had corn meal crust but it was good and different than the usual flour based crust I'm used too.

We ordered the chicken wings, garlic bread, and a 1/2 and 1/2 pie to split.

Wings - 4 stars, they were very tasty plain or with the light blue cheese dip that comes with it.

Garlic bread -  4 stars, it's a mini french loaf sliced and served with a side of softened butter with 2 whole bulbs of roasted garlic (YUMMM). I've never seen garlic bread served this way and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of roasted garlic so of course I spread the entire bulb on the bread and my pizza.

Pie - 3.5 stars - 1/2 Veggie with Italian sausage and 1/2 pepperoni with bell peppers.  The cornmeal pie crust was good, it had a rustic earthy taste to it. My half of the pie was overall good. I love the veggies except olives. With all the toppings, it did make for a heavy pie so we were only able to eat 1-2 pieces each with leftovers for lunch the next day.

Ambiance - 4 stars, it was the first time i'd been to a pizza joint where it was contemporary and felt a little upscale compared to the hole in the wall places throughout the city.

sitting area - there's plenty of tables even though they've maximized the use of the small space they have. My only gripe is that the tables against the wall are too close to each other. Thankfully we were there early enough that there wasn't a crowd nor anyone using the table next to us but there is very little space between the chairs and tables. You literally have to pull out the table if you're sitting against the wall regardless of your size.

Parking was a little challenging even though we were there before 6. Valencia is a busy street especially in the evening hours so you might have to drive around the block a few times to find a space nearby.

    blah blah blah bandwagon fan
blah blah blah garlic deep dish pizza with extra cheese and their specialty garlic sourdough bread that comes with a whole roasted garlic to go, Double yum.  Service was so/so but i'm starting to think that's an SF thing and maybe people who work in the city have to be serious and not friendly, is it some sort of unknown law? who knows pizza's great, parking sucks. service..so so. I'll come back but only if i dont find another place with awesome deep dish pizza and fantastic service, sorry little star!

I had never really eaten a deep dish pizza (that stuff at Pizza Hut when I was a kid does not count). The crust on Little Star's pizza is to die for. To light and flaky! I thought there was a little too much tomato sauce and I would have liked to have more toppings, but overall it was a nice experience!

    --Date: Sunday, 3/11/12
--Time: Indeterminable, roughly 4PM (a little tipsy off Zeitgeist Bloody Mary's)
--Crowd: Families, not too busy, got seated right away
--Group: Party of 6 tipsy 20-somethings
    --Service: Fast and efficient
--Food: Garlic bread (Oh-M-Gee fresh squeezable ooey gooey garlic),Small mixed salad of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, red bells, red onions, gorgonzola cheese and chopped walnuts and a large Little Star Deep Dish pizza with spinach blended, ricotta, feta, mushrooms, onions and garlic
--Portion: We would've liked more bread to eat the garlic with, the salad was enough for everyone to have a decent portion, the pizza allowed for everyone to have 1 full huge piece, then a half (we were happily full)
--Price: $5, $7, $24=$36 divided by 6, plus tax and tip, only about $8 each
--Overall: Chill atmosphere (I think we busted out in a tipsy rendition of Fiona Apple's "Criminal," and no one batted an eyelash), the food was outstanding and the service was quick and friendly

Maybe the best Chicago style pizza I have ever had. I mean it!
There is something special about the crust that I love. I feel like everything is always very, very tasty here and the service has always been simple and straightforward.
It is a bummer to have to wait a while for a table, but if you plan on it, it's not so bad.
I've done takeout here before as well, and it's the way to go if you have a larger group or are in a hurry.
Also, just know that whatever zesty goodness is in the sauce, it seems like it's better the next day, so save your leftovers and DO NOT leave them in the car like I sometimes do!
