Paxtis, Zachery's and Little Star? An age-old question here in the Bay Area when it comes to deep dish pizza. I am behind Little Star 110%.
The crust with the cornmeal is just unbeatable. I typically get the vegetarian and those toppings + sauce + the awesome crust = a whole lot of happy. My one qualm: why does it say black olives on your pizza when I know for a fact it is kalamata? You guys aren't fooling me. -
Review from Tom P.
I've heard a lot of great things about this place, but I can't say I walked away too impressed. Their deep-dish wasn't bad by any means; it's just that the pizza seemed rather ordinary in my opinion.
The one thing definitely worth mentioning though is the fact that Little Star serves cream soda. I friggin love cream soda. But at the same time, it's also never a good sign when you feel better about your soda than the actual pizza.
3 little stars. -

This place is fantastic. We went on a Saturday night and had to wait about 45 minutes but it was well worth it. The first thing I noticed (aside from the great dark atmosphere) was that the service was excellent. We were greeted almost as soon as we were seated and our first round of drinks arrived in less than a minute. We always had a full pitcher of water at our table throughout the meal.
We started with the caprese salad which was great. Very fresh ingredients. Fresh mozzarella and tomatoes served in a tasty olive oil and vinegar blend with olives and a couple pieces of bread. Definitely the perfect light appetizer to precede a very heavy entree.
For dinner we got a deep dish pizza with meatballs (which were a special, not on the normal menu), peppers, mushrooms, and zucchini. I am obsessed with pizza, so I would say this meal appeals to me more than most. But that being said, this was one of the best meals I've ever had. I could taste the freshness of the ingredients. There cornmeal crust was crispy and flavorful. For a deep dish pizza, there was a great balance of sauce to cheese to toppings. Everything about it was delicious.
For the quality and amount of food you can get, the price is very reasonable. We had a large 4 topping pizza, an appetizer, and 3 beers, and walked out paying $65 with tip. I've paid significantly more than that for far inferior meals/dining experiences in this city.
Definitely check this place out. -

Little Star Pizza is in the upper crust of pizzerias in San Francisco.
The deep dish pizzas feature buttery and crisp yet flaky crusts and a rich amount of sauce that still withholds from overwhelming the other pie components. Since the pizzas are brought to the table piping hot, copious amounts of Parmesan are well received and melt instantly into the sauce. The smaller deep dish size can comfortably feed 3.
Little Star's thin crust pizzas stay more than deliciously competitive with their deep dish cousins. The pesto chicken is consistently rich in flavor, and the crust likewise crisp and enjoyable.
Little Star pizzas are conservative in its greasiness. An ideal party size of 4 or 5 can enjoy variety by ordering a small deep dish and a small thin crust, while still minimizing wait time.
Despite having to squint to see the contents of your pizza due to the forced, dim mood lighting, Little Star provides a relaxed and stomach-satisfying experience. -

If you take 3 really hungry guys, order a deep dish pesto chicken pizza with light sauce, add some beer and garlic bread on the side, and let sit at a corner table for twenty minutes what happens?
Well as our waitress found out you come back to empty plates and three guys doing a post-Thanksgiving belt loosening.
It was so hard to savor the food because we were all so freaking hungry, but at the same time it was so good we couldn't slow down. It was the classic Catch-22.
I like the vibe of the place. It is cool and trendy and then still dishes up this ridonkulously good pizza. Nice service too. I can't remember out waitress's name but she was cute as hell. -

Came to this place on a friday at around 6pm and we were lucky enough to get seated immediately, but once we sat it started to get crazy busy in there. It's a little dark in there but I kinda liked that. We started off with the garlic bread which was solid they give you a whole bulb of garlic and you spread it on the bread along with the butter, so if you're feeling lazy don't get it. Before I talk about the pizza I will say I usually don't like deep dish pizza and when I went to Zachary's in berkeley I was not impressed. We ordered the brass monkey pizza and it was pretty fantastic, the thing that sticks out in my mind is how wonderful the cornmeal crust is it didn't get soggy at anytime, the last bite was as crisp and light as the first bite. The only thing you have to worry about coming here is the parking.

This place is actually kind of small so don't be surprised if you find yourself waiting from some delicious pizza! I went on a Saturday night after hitting up a bar on Haight. Pizza really does taste better after drinking or while drinking. Take your pick.
Anyways the decor is nice. It's the setting the mood romantic lighting. Haha. Well that's what I think. It's great for a group of friends or just your significant other, and hell one person. The food is great!
So everyone is coming here for the PIZZA. It's in the name, how can you not try the pizza? They have deep dish pizza and thin crust pizza, so you can have whatever you are feeling. Both are really good! I came here for the deep dish pizza because I am tired of BJ's crappy rip off pizza and wanted to see what was so good about Little Star. It does live up to the name! The pizza was so filling. Super cheesy and fresh from the oven, as well as lots of tomato sauce. Yum!
Service is super friendly here too. We had a party of five, but two ended up not showing. The waitress wasn't upset or anything and they seated us without waiting for the whole party, which is nice.
If you come at night make sure to come an hour and a half before they close. Maybe it was only an hour, but they stop making their deep dish pizzas! -

Brass monkey pizza is delicious! It's not on the menu, but it's basically the Little Star with sausages.
Some say it's better than Zachary's, so I had to see for myself. I think Little Star has a better crust with its wholesome cornmeal texture and crispiness. But, being a fan of tomato sauce, I have a special place in my heart for Zach's and its generous use of good tomato sauce that fills the pie.
However, the caprese salad here is really, really good! The friendly service is a win too. -
Review from Kendra W.
Having returned after a year working out of Chicago, I was starting to have deep dish withdrawal but didn't want to go all the way to east bay for Zachary's -- so happy to have found Little Star!
Given the limited space, the wait was about 30 minutes on a Sunday night. Luckily there's a bar with cheap beers ($2 PBRs!) so you can drink while you wait -- still, I just about died watching all waiters walk by with the fresh pies.
IMHO -- it's better than Zachary's. Ingredients are super fresh and the price is a few dollars cheaper. The small deep dish is definitely enough to feed two people. If I could improve the pizza -- it'd be to have fresh tomatoes (instead of the paste) and less cheese. Personal preference though!
Love for Little Star! -

The definition of 5 stars if ever there was one. I came here and guzzled down 2 Racer 5s (pints only), shared one caprese salad (delicious tomatoes and fresh mozarella in a bed of olive oil and vinegar topped with shredded basil), and had a "half and half" meatball special and little star. I expected the vegetarian little star to be the better half and I was right, even though the meatball special was good (I think my date was excited at the prospect of meat, but she conceded that the little star was the better of the two on flavor).
A nice romantic-ish not too well lit, but sometimes amazingly loud interior. The jute box is mostly for show. Service is impeccable. Beers on tap are good considering it's not a pub.
Quarter gets you some cash from their ATM, but they now take plastic.
A recent trip to Chicago made me resolve to eat here more: it's as good or better than anything they got there. Oh how great is the city of San Francisco? If you want proof, come and eat here.
For a small pizza, 4 beers, one salad it was $25/person without tip. Totally worth it. -

I visited Little Star Pizza for the first time last Thursday (1/19/12) at around 9:30pm (30 minutes before closing time). I called them around 9:20pm to see if it's still ok to come since they are closing in less than an hour. The guy on the phone said that's fine and to head over.
I was very excited to eat here since I've read the reviews and everyone is raving about it. When my boyfriend and I got the restaurant it wasn't what I expected. The ambiance was very chic. It was dimly lit with some heavy black curtains by the windows. There were some art on the walls for sale and I thought that was pretty cool. The host tells me there's a 10-15 minute wait and I said that's fine as long as we will still get served. The place was packed by the way; I got even more excited.
Then everything after we got seated went downhill. After the host showed us to our table he didn't give us any menus or asked if we wanted to start with anything to drink or even said "your server will be right wit you." I guess I'm just anal since I studied hospitality management. After 5-7 minutes with no menu or water, I finally flagged someone down and asked for the menu. I tried to ask for water, but the guy did the raise-one-finger motion; which I really didn't like. It took a couple more minutes for our menu and five more minutes after that to get our waters.
Our server finally came and asked us if we were ready to order since the kitchen will be closing. In my head I'm like we've been sitting here for almost 20 minutes and no one stopped and asked us if we were ready to order. On the other hand, the food was great. We had the classic deep dish which is a cornmeal deep dish crust filled with sausage, onions, green peppers, and mushrooms. It was DELISH. I had Patxi's before and I would prefer Little Star's pizza over theirs. I think it has a good crust to sauce to cheese to toppings ratio. I would definitely buy pizza here again, maybe for pick-up. But the attitude and service we got during my first ever visit was a fail. Maybe after a few months I'll go again, maybe sometime during the day when they're not in a rush to go home. -

South San Francisco, CA
This place is pretty good. I prefer deep dish pizza over thin crust because it's so darn good, so I gave this place a try because I've heard so much about their pizzas. We got their garlic bread and little star deep dish pizza with added chicken.
Garlic bread: do it yourself style meaning that they give you a small loaf of sourdough bread, roasted garlic bulbs, and soft warm butter. I like my garlic bread already smoothered in that stuff, but it was interesting making it myself. I found it tasting good.
Little star deep dish + chicken: thick, juicey, and tastey. The crust is cornbready, which is interesting in a good way (you can taste it more in the leftovers). Pretty good for deep dish pizza.
The service wasn't that great, they didn't check in on us as often as I like. We ran out of water and napkins; it took forever to get some more napkins and we never got more water. The atmosphere is dark, I guess to be intimate, but it is so loud. It's kind of small inside, too. The prices were more expensive than I thought they would be. There was no wait when we arrived, which was good because I was hungry :). Look at the ratings/reviews...give it a try! -

One of my favorite Chicago-Style/Deep-dish Pizza places in SF.
The cornbread crust is an interesting and delicious modification.
Highly recommend. -

Came here with a few people for a late lunch on a Saturday. They weren't very busy so being sat and service was quick. We picked out the Pesto chicken for our thin crust. This was very good, but a little too much onions for me. All over the top was thinly sliced onions. I did like that the flavors from the other ingredients weren't masked too much. The chicken was not dry - I was happy about that. I actually prefer thin crust. The pizza was very crispy on the bottom and the crust and not burnt. It was great.
For our deep dish we had the vegetarian one. I didn't like this as much because there was too much tomato sauce and tomatoes in it. I did like the zucchini though. The crust was very cornmeal-y, which I didn't like as much, but it had a nice texture.
Overall our meal was good, but next time I will choose different pizzas. -
Review from Misha T.
Man that cornmeal crust is good. Like really good. Man....
Um... yea go eat there, I don't really know what to say, this is the best deep dish in the bay area with the closest competition being the notably inferior zacharys in the east bay. -

Being a pizza lover (really, what American isn't), I loved this place. Honestly, it is extremely rare to find a place that not only serves both Chicago-style deep dish and thin crust, but also pulls it off well.
Was in town seeing some old friends, so naturally we went out drinking and to grab some pizza. For the latter, end your search and just come here. We ordered a pie of the thin crust and one the of the deep dish and were not disappointed. I did think their thin crust was better than the deep dish, but that isn't an insult at all, especially since GOOD deep dish outside Chicago is really hard to find. Definitely going back on the next trip. -
Review from Sydney L.
I've been to Little Star twice now and and while their pizza is good, it's not as good as all the hype would have you believe.
The first time I went with 3 hungry boys and, at the waiter's, we got a single deep dish pizza -- half Little Star and half Mediterranean Chicken. It wasn't enough food! I was content but the boys could have easily eaten another slice each. The Mediterranean Chicken wasn't all that great, but the Little Star was solid.
The second time I went here was again with 3 hungry boys. This time we got 1 deep dish (Little Star) and 1 thin crust (Classic). And again, the Classic was nothing special but the Little Star was good. We walked away with one - maybe two- extra slices.
Little Star is definitely worth trying, especially if you're a deep dish pizza fan, but know that the place is over hyped! -
Review from Dru P.
I waited far too long to try Lil Star. I have always been a Patxi's fan but after getting stuffed with the Chicago style here on sunday I am a convert. Its all in the cornmeal crust, which is just plain delicious.
Golden, crispy, buttery, crusty...its like crack. It puts this Chicago style over the top. I grew up outside of Chicago and had plenty of the world famous pizza but NONE of those spots had a crust like this. I would order a side of crust if I could. Plus the toppings come in a fantastic array topping combos. -

We ordered to go so I didn't actually eat at the restaurant, but just looking inside the restaurant I was a little surprised. Usually when I think of a pizza place I think of a bright, loud restaurant with maybe a basketball game on...you know what I'm talking about! But this restaurant has a very nice atmosphere unlike what I'm used to...so I think it's definitely a nice place to go to on a date.
We ordered the small deep dish classic pizza. For two people, it's the perfect size. And it's so delicious! I'm a VERY picky eater...I don't like onions, mushrooms, olives, bell peppers...I can keep going on and on. Well..the classic happens to have mushrooms, onions, green bell peppers. Great. But.....I still loved it. Yeah...that's how good it was! I HATE combination pizza but this deep dish pizza is too amazing..!
Minus one star because I wasn't crazy over the crust. It was very.....eh. -

Looking for a light dinner, my 3 girlfriends and I ordered a thin crust pizza instead of a deep dish (I'm not a tomato sauce fan anyway!). We had the pesto chicken with onions and mushrooms. Just the right amount of cheese, thin crispy crust, and quality ingredients. I've had a deep dish at another location and definitely enjoyed the thin crust a lot more! Definitely in my top 3 for pizza in the bay area. My NY girlfriend even mentioned it was better than the ones she's tried in NY!
Go early because a line will form and you're gonna be kicking yourself later once the smell of the pizza hits your nose! -

Little Star Pizza is awesome. I love their deep dish and thin crust. I was so appreciative when they opened in my neighborhood and probably order take out pizza there once/week! My 2.5 year old gets a full serving of veggies from the tomato on each deep dish slice. The "Little Star" deep dish is our go-to choice!

Extremely good place. I would say the best pizza in San Francisco, but not the best in the U.S. and that's why I give them a 4 stars instead of 5. The best pizza in the US is at Gino's East in Chicago.
Now more about this place. This place can get extremely crowded and the wait can be insane. I recommend either going before 5pm or after 9pm if you don't like waiting. The ambiance here is dark and noisy but the service is good and the place is clean.
The pizza here is deep dish and I've tried most of them and I got to say they are pretty good and they are worth the wait.
Overall, I recommend at least trying this place once and most likely you will come back for more. -

Really nice pizzas. Huge fan. Flavorful and fresh. Friendly service.
I've eaten here twice and got the deep dish pizzas each time and love them (got the Little Star and the Mediterranean)! I've also gotten the Goddess Salad which is great. -

We went to Little Star, because we had heard it compares well to Zachary's. Well, Little Star isn't Zachary's, but that's not a bad thing.
The wife doesn't care for the soggy stuffed crust at Zachary's, so the crust at Little Star won rave reviews from her. The cornmeal crust is nice and thick and slightly crunchy, and the cheese and tomato sauce kicks it up a notch in a big way. The sauce is very similar to Zachary's. All in all, it's delicious, delicious, delicious.
Just don't get the garlic bread, it was a dud.
So yeah, Little Star is good, in a different way than Zach's, but also in a similar way. -

they have a great selection on pizzas and other things.
we started with their caprese salad which was nicely prepared and toothsome, I couldn't help it but wanted more bread with it!
pizzas:
special meatball thin crust pizza: I'm not a huge fan of meatballs but they did a very nice job finding the mid-point; it still had the moist meat without being too heavy.
the highlight of the evening was their Mediterranean chicken deep crust pizza.
everything about it was just delicious, had a nice texture and even the temperature was perfect.
I would surely visit again for more. -

I prefer the location in Valencia better but the pizza is still delicious here. I feel like this location is smaller than the one on Valencia so the wait tends to be longer. I've been here multiple times and have had to wait over an hour each time. But the last time I came really early (at like 6) and there was no wait, so I was pleased, but then again I came on a Wednesday night. I brought my parents and they loved the pizza but they didn't like the dim lighting in the restaurant...
Anyways, on the recommendation of a friend, on Sunday, boyfriend's brother's girlfriend brought home the my favorite, the Little Star, but this time with sausage (deep dish of course) and it was AMAZING! I didn't think the Little Star could get any better but it did! -

Came here on a whim with some friends on a random night. This place is very popular!
We waited about an hour and a half for a table here. But I can say the wait was well worth it! We had an order of wings and it had the perfect amount of seasoning and sauce. Had an amazing spice kick to it!
We ordered the Italian combo, there was 4 us and we each had two slices which was more than enough. The wings and large pizza to share between 4 people was a good amount.
I want to come back soon to try another pizza, I will try a deep dish next time! -

I don't like Chicago style pizza...except for this one. It was amazing. Not too doughy with a good amount of sauce and cheese. I've had a lot of Chicago style and nothing comes close to this!

Some quick reasons for this place being so popular...
1. The ingredients are very high quality. You can really taste the peppers, onions, and of course plenty of tomato sauce in each bite.
2. The presentation when it arrives is nothing short of spectacular. This piping hot smoldering disk of goodness just automatically puts you into ravenous mode! I mean it's one thing to be hungry and crave something, but to be hungry, crave pizza, and get this type of treat is on a different plane of existence.
3. The crust! Love the cornmeal textured crust. It can stand up to all that moisture from the tomatoes and retain the crunch and flavor without getting soggy. Any chance of creating a sourdough cornmeal crust? I
All things considered, this is an amazing pizza, yet I have a reservation. I'm not sure what IT is, but that little IT is what keeps it short from getting the 5 stars. Call me crazy but just serving a great product is 99% of the battle, but that 1% is very elusive indeed! -

I love this place. Their pizzas are far better then Patxi's and Zachary's. Although there is usually a long wait, it is definitely worth it. Usually I just head across the street to Mini Bar,grab a drink, and a table will free up. Their portions are generous and one deep dish pizza can feed 3 people easily. The thin crust pizza is just ok, and the garlic bread comes with a warm loaf with a whole roasted garlic and butter. YUM!!
Pros: Great pizzas, Yummy Garlic bread, and fun drinks!!
Cons: Cash only, but they have an ATM with a 25 cent service charge. -

Came back here with my gf and she was thoroughly impressed so have to give another 5 stars to this place!
What I Had This Time: Classic Deep Dish w/Pepperoni, Mixed Salad, Root Beer
Have to agree with her review that the cold glass is amazing! Can't beat that and really shows that Little Star pays attention to every detail.
The mixed salad hit the spot and the classic with pepperoni was amazing. Absolute perfection and there really is no better deep dish in the Bay IMO at all.

Disclaimer: I'm not a deep dish pizza fan, so the deep dish pizza review is based on my friends' overall love for Little Star's deep dish pizza.
Deep dish: Everyone loves the deep dish, especially the one with pepperoni and sausage.
Thin crust: I liked it. I would go back and eat this pizza.
The wait...well, it's a pretty good pizza place overall, so the wait, as with most good restaurants, is pretty long. Last time I went, we waited an hour for our table. Service is super friendly. Parking in the area can be a nightmare though, so maybe carpool with friends if you can. -

A slice of Little Star pizza can get me pretty full already. Because it is the city's finest pizza place, my boyfriend said that it was time that I tried it, since he lives fairly close the the restaurant. When we went to pickup our order, it was packed with people in the tables and people waiting for their takeout, it really says something about Little Star's popularity.
It's just me, but I dislike how it's drenched in marinara sauce; I don't think it needs that much sauce. It could just be that pizza we ordered that was drenched in it, I don't know. but other than that, it was still one of the best pizza I've ever had. Very impressive, I wouldn't mind going to try out the other pizzas. -

Delicious pizza made with top notch ingredients. The cornmeal crust isn't my thing, but it's still pretty damn good. Happy hour beer prices are a nice touch also. The ambiance is fine, but it does get awfully crowded as the night goes on. I suggest getting here for an early dinner.

The pie is delicious, no doubt about it but an hour and a half wait is kind of ridiculous on top of the parking situation. Monday thru Friday work life is stressful enough. I wouldn't come again during peak time.
The service is attentive without being intrusive. It's a posh spot to enjoy dinner.
Here's a tip: call them and leave your name AND have a snack before you leave the house. Check in with the host/hostess and then go across the street or down the block for a drink. They can take your phone number and give you a call when you're 5 minutes from a table.
5 starts for the pizza. -1 star for the crazy wait -

Appetizer: Garlic Bread- warm loaf of bread and a garlic bulb. Delicious.
Pizza: the Mediterranean. The cornmeal crust was interesting, but the deep dish pizza just wasn't 'deep' enough, needs more sauce or something. I'll eat it again just nothing special.
It's just that the loaf of bread and garlic bulb stood out in my mind more so than the main dish, should be vice versa. Therefore, nothing too special.
Maybe I'm biased, but as far as deep dish pizza in the bay, no one else does it like Zachery's (in Berkeley and Albany). -

The best deep dish pizza I've had on the West Coast.
We got 1/2 Little Star, 1/2 Veggie. Wish we went full Little Star. It's delicious. I love that the cornmeal crust gives it a hint of sweetness. The only thing that kept me from giving 5 stars is that its a personal preference of mine to have a "doughier" crust. Meaning, I like crust that has soft in the middle and crispy on the outside.
Serving is awesome here. Great place to take a date. Reasonable prices for the quality of food. The small size is perfect for 2 people. We also split a slice of the cheesecake which was good, but not amazing. I appreciated that it was fluffy and not dense, since the pizza itself is pretty filling. -

I could easily sum this review up in one sentence:
"I don't like deep dish pizza, but I love Little Star Pizza."
There I said it...but okay some more details. When I first moved to San Francisco, I was told about this place and it definitely wasn't first on my list of places to eat because honestly, I'm not a deep dish pizza fan. So one day I went with a few friends of mine and casually ordered their standard pizza and to my surprise, it was extremely enjoyable! Now, it doesn't convert me into a deep disher but it has elicited my business twice in the 2 weeks following that first encounter! That's how good it is.
I'm more of a NY thin cruster (having lived in NYC for the majority of my young adult life) so if any of you have recs, send them my way! -
