Beef and pork, 3 beef ribs and half a rack of spares coleslaw and mac and cheese. Berkshire steel rail ale. Gator tails from a farm that is raised from Louisiana, lightly battered and served with a firey pepper dip. Tender, juicy qnd flavorful.
Baby backs served in a hot sauce fall off the bone. No smoke ring here but tender, juicy and meaty. By far my least favorite cut of rib, these weren't half bad.
The more successful beef ribs were some of the more meatier specimens I've sampled to date. Large areas of nicely smoked, juicy, fat-tilicious meat. Dry rub with a nice kick to it. Unlike many establishments, Marks manages to leave more meat on than off the bone. Well done.
Coleslaw with a standard mayonaise with specks of peppers.
Mac and cheese is good while not being overly cheesy.
Steel rail is cool, crisp and. Nice balance to the artery clogging substance of the meal. -

Blah.
It was edible, but this isn't a barbecue place. At least it's not a barbecue place where anyone knows how to make proper barbecue anyway.
I ordered some ribs. Anyone who knows barbecue knows that ribs should fall off the bone after a proper stay in said barbecue. These decidedly did not. Yeah, they were edible, but they were more akin to the ribs you get at a Chinese restaurant than the melt-in-your-mouth kind one should expect from a place like this.
Sides also leave something to be desired. The mac and cheese was very underwheliming, and the beans were not particularly sweet, as barbecue beans should be.
It was also quite expensive. I stopped in for lunch take out and spent almost twelve bucks. Not exactly a penny saver.
I award a second star because this is a cute local business with some flair inside. I'm sure it would be a fun place to go for dinner. But don't expect the world here; after all, it's Northern Connecticut BBQ :). -

Cute place, good barbecue, great service.
My boyfriend and I stopped by Little Mark's for some BBQ earlier today-- and holy pulled pork platter, it was just what I needed. We started with corncakes with whipped maple butter (to die for) and moved on to a sampler filled with pulled pork and tasty tender ribs. We also tried the shrimp po boy, which was one of the daily specials. Only complaint was the sides-- kind of weak-- the "homemade" mac & cheese fell flat and flavorless- didn't even meet my expectations for box mix...and I love mac & cheese.
But overall a good experience and I'd go back. And if you make it there, I hope you get Erica as your waitress-- she was a total delight! -

I just love this place! We used to live close to it and eat there all the time and now that we are not so close we don't get to eat here as often but when we do it is always a treat! We drove there tonight and it was as good as I remembered. The baby back ribs just fall off the bone and the sauce they use is so good! I have yet to find a barbeque place in CT that is better!

Food was really good (ribs, fries, and chicken tenders). The place was clean, with a good atmosphere. It's not a big place, but they had 3 or 4 TVs, and had country music playing. A couple walls are filled with awards from Hartford Magazine (best restaurant in Tolland county for most of the past 20 years) and Zagat. Service was good as well.
I just had a casual dinner, so my expectations weren't very high. The restaurant wasn't outstanding, but it was definitely above average. I would recommend it to anyone, and definitely plan on going there again if I'm in the mood for BBQ. -

Gave this place a second try last Friday 11/5/10 ---
Chill atmosphere, good drinks, nice staff.
BIG PLATES, after apps (Nachos and wings) we couldn't really eat our entrees.
Bigger isn't better though - 2 stars for the quality of the food.
- Extremely dry pulled pork, & ham (ordered the club)
I tried to eat the filling rather than the roll
- Bland mac and cheese side
We all pretty much got the same stuff (pulled pork sandwiches)
- Sweet potato fries were good though
- Only reason why we came is because it closed at 10pm where our original destination closed at 9pm (Taste of Texas).
3rd Times the charm? Prob not - sorry. -

Great place! I've been to Little Marks twice now and both times I've been impressed. The funny thing is, I think I'm the only one who likes this place. Both times I've come it's basically been dead.
Anyhow, I had the ribs the first time (they were awesome!), and the brisket sandwich today (again awesome). I also liked the onion stings a lot but the mac & cheese and coleslaw were just ok. Their sauces are probably the best homemade BBQ sauces I've had in the state, the spicy one is my favorite.
I really could care less how authentic the place is, if the food is good I'm happy. Give Little Mark a shot, I think it hit's the spot! -

I only ate there once and thought it was ok. I really liked there version of fried onions. The sauce it came with was so delicious. My boyfriend had the pulled pork . It was made with a lot of sauce. Later when we were home, he got sick. Maybe the pork wasn't cooked all the way. Who knows?

Little Mark's is my favorite BBQ/Smokehouse in the Northeast, and beats any BBQ places that I've been in the Silicon Valley, Boston, MD, NY, PA (Including Famous Dave's in Pitt, Balt, Columbia).
I agree whole heartly with George G, this place is simply awesome. If you come here for lunch, however, be prepared to experience the meat coma afterwards... I had never went back to work not stuffed and in bliss.
You can easily see the smoke ring on the ribs and briskets, and the taste is complex and perfectly balanced. The sauces, they have a couple different level of heat, we rarely added any more, but on occassion, I enjoy their hot bbq sauce. So far, no where in the Valley have bbq sauce as good as theirs.
As sad as this can be, not many people knows about good BBQ. Even one of my favorite show "Man Vs Food" toughted how good "High Life" restaurant was. But at the end "High Life" in San Jose DO NOT make BBQ. They make "Oven Baked Ribs."
On the other hand, Little Marks takes their time making sure that flavor, complexity, texture, sweet and heat are balanced.
This is by far, my favorite smoke house that I've been too.
P.S. On the flip side, Famous Dave's seem s to have much more energy as far as decor goes, but decor does not fill me up. : )....... -

Everything about this place was fantastic. The pulled pork is my go-to order, and it's always great. I've also had the brisket, grilled chicken and a few other things...everything is awesome! They have homemade BBQ sauces (sweet and hot...both good, better if mixed together) that you must try.
Good beer available too, and their coleslaw is actually surprisingly good as well. It's a small, homey place and the staff is always friendly, attentive and helpful. Cant recommend it highly enough. This is my go-to place for barbecue in Connecticut (it helps that I live down the street), and the delightful smell wafting out the window often helped me get through my workout at the gym right next door.
Do not miss out on this place, you will really regret it! -

I love Little Mark's.
Food - The food is usually really good. Every once in a while I feel that the meat gets a little over done, but never excessively so. Make sure you use the sauces brought out to the table too, they make the experience that much more delicious and sloppy. The food comes out with a conservative amount of sauce on it, probably to keep some people from thinking it's over-sauced, but in my opinion it just needs more, otherwise the flavor isn't quite there.
Drinks - They have a handful of beers on tap, and they're not all the standard crap, which is nice. You're not going to find a selection of micro-brews on tap, but you also wont' be limited to beers available in 30-packs.
Atmosphere - OK, the atmosphere isn't great. The bathroom is so-so, and the tables are too close together - but it's a BBQ place. A place where I'm getting my hands and probably my chin covered in BBQ sauce isn't the kind of place where the decor concerns me.
Price - Prices are OK. If you want to save some money, however, watch the mail for the flip books of coupons. There's a page of them in there for Mark's every time - they're usually for buy one meal get one half off.
Insider Info -
See coupon comment above.
Also, Monday's and Tuesdays (I think) are buy one meal get one 1/2 off. They probably have deals on other days too, but I can't remember.

If you want to eat meat, this is the place. My husband and I really like this place but we can only eat giant beef ribs or pork ribs and fried food about once a year. It's delicious. I love the hot BBQ sauce and also tumbleweeds (thin onion strings).

Stopped by here on a Tues night at 6:30. Not crowded but not empty. Lots of draft beers to choose from. Got the pork sampler w/ coleslaw and mashed p's. Service was friendly.
Sorry to disagree with most of the other reviewers, but I was totally underwhelmed by the food. Pulled pork was tasteless as were the spare ribs. Pork ribs were a bit better. I did like the fresh coleslaw and the mashed potatoes. It may be the "best in the county", but when you are in CT that is not saying much. If you are not experienced with many kinds of bbq, this may be good for you, but if you are, it is very disappointing. -

Yelp to the rescue again! Where to go when the line at Rein's Deli is too long? Little Mark's Big BBQ, of course.
Friendly, fast service, clean bathrooms and generous piles of melt-in-your-mouth BBQ. I don't normally like tons of barbecue sauce, but I could not get enough of their homemade sweet sauce. Fries were crispy and wel-seasoned, their cole slaw was freshly made (and I do not normally eat cole slaw) and the mashed potatoes are heavenly.
All in all, a great little place to break your haul between NYC and Boston. -

Decent BBQ when you get the craving. Pulled pork and brisket are both solid choices. If you are craving a meat extravaganza on your plate go for the Pork Lovers or Beef Lovers platter. Make sure you ask for the sauces on your table. They are all good except for the apple...I am not a fan of that one. Their smokey sauce is fantastic, as is the hot. Their sauces are thin though. I wouldn't mind it a little bit thicker so it clings to the meat better.
The only underwhelming dish I have had at Little Marks is the mac and cheese...meh. I make a better mac and cheese than that bland stuff. It is creamy but just tasteless. -

You have to love Little Mark's if your a BBQ fan. I havent had an item on their menu that I didnt like, and I've tried almost everything over the years. My favorite is the pork ribs and the pulled pork sandwich. I also love that you get your choice of sauces (either sweet or hot), so don't forget to ask for extra sauce if your ordering takeout. All of their sides are delicious, but I specifically adore their mashed potatoes. I love Little Marks so much I keep their business card in my wallet so I can call ahead from the car!!

Mmmmm, Meat. This place has the Advocate's best of reviews dating back since the 90's. The ribs are moist and delicious, the brisket sandwich makes me think about the first one I ever had at some roadside hole in the cinder block joint on the way to South Padre Island. They haven't changed the decor since it opened and I don't care. A nice family place, good beer selection. I'm hungry.

this was one of the grossest dining experiences i have had in a while.... to start the beef ribs were pure fat and were trimmed down to nothing, second the mashed potatoes were brown and tasted instant, third and worst of all my father got to the bottom of his beer and there was all this disgusting metal shaving looking stuff in the bottom of his glass. I brought it to the waitress and she poured from the tap into a condiment cup and there was more of this stuff coming out of the tap. I told her I expected the bill adjusted to which she responded with an attitude "I'll take the beer off...don't worry." When she came back to the table she tried to claim it was yeast... brown metallic yeast... right. We told her she needed to clean the tap lines.

So good it lasted only 2 years in Avon. If you think this place is even remotely close to southern....I suggest the 99 for the riblets. Famous Dave's isnt the shangri-las...but it's way more authentic than these pretenders.

The great food and great service adds up to a wonderful combination.
This place is a must go for everything from ribs, chicken, pulled pork and many tasty sides. The beer selection is extensive . They make their own sauces - my personal favorite - Java - but they are all yummy! Very clean with outside seating and specials most nights. Wednesday nights is all you can eat rib night..hee haw!! This place has some of the friendliest waitstaff around. -

Really good BBQ. Fired okra is awesome too.
