Review from Philip H.
Redlands, CA
Heard about this place several times over the past few years, but never got around to trying it. One reason: it's impossible to find unless you're specifically looking for it. Odd location next to a gas station in the middle of a deserted industrial area of Redlands.
Don't let the location or the dive-y interior throw you off though. The food is great! Best fish and chips, fried fish, and grilled fish I've had in a long time.
My only real complaint is the price range. Seems a bit expensive, but on the other hand the fish really is fresh and very good. Definitely worth a shot. Was here for lunch on a Saturday when the place was virtually empty. -

I wanted to check it out but... closed as of 12/31/11 :(
Makes me sad that another small, local restaurant has shut down. -

Redlands, CA
I really want to like this place, but I just can't give it a 4 star and I feel terrible about it. The wait and counter staff were awesome, very friendly and attentive, but the timing on all of our dishes was way off. The worst part is that the food was good, really good. The seafood was fresh and very tasty. I'll be returning, but I'll most likely get an order to go or purchase fresh fish from the counter, or call ahead to save time! I guess my expectations would have been different if they marketed themselves as a cafeteria style dine, rather than a restaurant with table service.
My husband and I ordered Fish and Chips, and Shrimp and Chips, along with a side of steamed veggies for our daughter. We also got a nice sized order of steamed clams for an appetizer.
The steamed clams (awesome!!) came out first, which was appropriate since that was the app, but then my order of shrimp and chips came out about a minute after wards. We hadn't gotten our beers yet, or my daughter's kids cup, so we had to ask for those items. 10 minutes later, beers arrived, no kids cup. 10 minutes after that, steamed veggies arrived, still no kids cup OR other entree. My husband I basically split my meal and the clams and filled our daughter's sippy from her diaper bag up with water from the bathroom (since we didn't have waters either). We ended up waiting a total of almost half an hour for his entree.
I am not sure if this was a product of the back kitchen or what, but you could tell that it was bothering our waiter that he wasn't able to bring out food in the order it should have come. Also, to our waiter's defense, I think he was waiting on the gal behind the counter for the drinks, which after 20 minutes no kiddie cup, I saw him go back and fill it up himself between table runs. -

It's true...gone our of business! RIP Little Fisherman. The couple that ran this place split up...so I knew it was a matter of time before it closed. Such a shame...this was a great place that's been around for decades.

I've been going to Little Fisherman for years even when they were located on Alabama St. and Barton Rd. It's a good local place where you can either order from their menu as well as buy a selection of seafood to bring home and cook yourself.
Each time I'm there I order their Fish n Chips, which is now one of their daily lunch specials at $5.95! It always made fresh. And their tartar sauce is amazing!
I was just informed that this place gone out of business over the holiday season. What a disappointment! Now have to find a new local place when wanting fish n chips! -

Went here for the first time last week, and became an instant fan. love the fact they sell fresh fish. I got their fish and chips lunch special...great taste, good portions and great value. My friend got a teriyaki salmon burger and it was the best ive ever tasted, soo good.
Overall, the place may look a bit old and worn down, but the food and service was on point. -

Hole in the wall next to a gas station. The lady who took our order was really nice and friendly. Live music in Friday and Saturday night from 6pm to 9pm. Only complaint is the price range. It is a little high.

My wife and I stopped by on Saturday night and had "the Brian K"... that is, based on his reviews, we ordered the calamari appetizer plus fish & chips.
I would like to simply place a "ditto" on my review, as he covered everything. The calamari is a massive portion, and was excellent. Served very similar to calamari tempura at most Japanese restaurants. Fish very nice, firm flesh, crispy coating. Fries were nothing memorable, but not bad either.
I liked the jazz duo and they had Hangar 24 on tap. Next time maybe I will get 2 orders of calamari, it was that good. -

I only learned of this place by purchasing 2 groupons, which is how many establishments expand their clientele.
I used my groupon for dinner with a friend. The location is easy to miss and the inside looks a bit rundown. The food and service made up for it. The steamed mussels, calamari steaks, catfish and chips were fresh and exquisite. I thought I had found a new addition to my list of regulars.
Fast forward a couple months later, my parents finally decided to use the other groupon I had purchased and given to them. They are always skeptical of restaurants that are new to them to begin with so their experience that day did not help. They were told that they could not use the groupon to order any specials and had to pay the full price. I do not recall this stipulation when I purchased the groupon...I also recall using my groupon to order specials. The lady encouraged them to use the groupon during a future visit if they wanted to order specials. My parents and brother ordered the exact items I had ordered during my first visit. They used the groupon for that trip as they did not want to forget and have it expire. They enjoyed the calamari and catfish but stated the mussels tasted old, not fresh at all. Because of their impression that the employee was deceiving them they did not send any food back and needless to say, none of us will be returning. The point of groupons is to bring in customers, not chase them away. -

I love Little Fisherman! Their fish is always so fresh-tasting. I love the fish and chips or the fish tacos for lunch. For dinner, I prefer grilled fish. The salad that comes with the grilled fish is delicious, fresh greens to balance the fresh fish. They have perfectly decent wine by the glass and Hangar24 for DH.
The service here is always so welcoming. I stop in occasionally to buy fresh fish and usually have a glass of wine and/or some chowder while I'm at it.
After my first visit to Little Fisherman, I decided to have my birthday dinner there. Good call! Eight of us loved our food. The service was excellent, couldn't have been any better. -

Went here for the first time with a Groupon discount. We were surprised by the run down look of the inside and that there was no table service. We placed our order at the counter and the order taker asked if we've used Groupon before. We said no and she told us we are supposed to tip 18% on the pre discount price. It was annoying that she would assume we wouldn't tip on the prediscounted price and tell us how much to tip. Plus there was not alot of service involved since we placed our order at a counter. I seems that companies that use the coupons to gain new business then resent the people who utilize them. That part was weird. We ordered grilled mahi mahi, one with fries and one with hushpuppies. The fish and hushpuppies were pretty good. The fries were just average, maybe frozen. On the way out we checked out the fresh fish case. It did not look very fresh. Good thing we did not check this out before we ate or we might have left. Not sure if we'll go back or not. There are alot of good restaurants out there. This one has potential but they need to work on it.

Very attentive and friendly service. Had the steamed mussels, crab cakes, fried catfish, and grilled salmon. All superb. The grilled salmon came with crisp, lovely little house salad. The coleslaw that accompanied the fried items was crisp and not over dressed. The tartar was house made and spot on. They even made a half order of fish and chips for my little boy. The gentlemen behind the counter explained the seafood is delivered fresh daily. He was very nice and even offered to take our order at the table instead of the counter since we were with our 3 little ones.
A hidden gem in the most of obscure locations.

I'm disappointed that my review is so contrary to the average here because I was really excited to finally try this place. I'm a big fresh fish fan so after finding out this is fresh from the ocean every day I was thrilled. I actually went for lunch for my birthday. The whole restaurant was empty and the lunch was pricey and really left a lot to be desired. The rice pilaf and cole slaw were both very bland and the fish was just average. What did I miss?

Springfield, OR
After dodging this place for years we finally went and after some of the awkwardness of trying some place new, I was pleasantly surprised. We went for dinner on a Friday at 5pm. Walking in I was unsure of the process, the menu and of what to do.
Here's the basic rundown: You walk in and up to the counter on the far wall. There you find the main menu behind the counter. Specials are on the dry erase board near by. You order and pay at the counter. They hand you a number, you find a place to sit and everything is brought out to you. There was a staff of two servers a few people cooking. There was a couple playing Christian Jazz (best way to describe it...not sure what they call it) in the corner. Service was a bit disorganized but very friendly. You could tell they were eager to help but seemed overwhelmed.
As for the food: I gotta tell ya...this has got to be the freshest seafood in Redlands! Everything we ordered was solid. Started with the calamari. Not the tentacles and rings you normally see (which I love) but strips of squid in a beer batter served with lemon and cocktail sauce. Awesome! Very tender and cooked to perfection. Kids loved it! We ordered fish and chips, fish tacos and one of the specials-the grilled wahoo. Fish and chips were perfectly crunch and not oily. Very tasty. You get three pieces to an order. Fries were fries. Nothing special. Fish tacos were grilled with a nice sauce. They come three to a plate. Very small almost bite sized but loads of flavor. The wahoo was just past were I like it cooked. A little dry in parts but close. Still tasty! With their colleslaw-very good. Was supposed to come with a side salad but I never got it. That was part of the sporadic service.
All in all...The Food-Great!!! The Service-Needed another server. But again, the guy who helped us very friendly and checked on us when he could. The Prices-Expensive. But I'd rather pay for fresh seafood. If it was cheap I'd worry!!! Definitely going back. Probably for lunch. -

Wow! They have some of the freshest fish I've ever tasted! It was for a great price as well (lunch special that is). It takes awhile for the food but that's because it's all fresh. If you're on a time crunch you're going to want to order ahead and make sure you're there on time to pick it up.

We first found this restaurant on a coupon purchasing website. We went to check it out. It was a small home cooking type place. A live band was playing when we got there. I ordered the grilled halibut. It had an option of a side so I got the rice pilaf. We also ordered crab cakes. The cocktail sauce was amazing. It was the first time having crab cakes and I am now a fan. My halibut was cooked perfectly and wasn't dry at all. The rice pilaf was simple and had a butter flavor to it. All and all it was a good experience and the staff was VERY attentive. If I am in the area again I may just stop in. One thing I found interesting was all the tables at the entrance of the building were tables and chair. The booths were to the left and hidden. I didn't notice the outdoor seating until I was already eating. :(

Ate here today. They had some good specials displayed when we walked in at the front. My wife ordered the grilled mahi mahi with rice pilaf and clam chowder. I ordered the teriyaki salmon burger and subbed fried zucchini for the fries. The grilled fish had a little too much char on it that made it a little on the bitter side. My wife liked her chowder a lot and I loved the salmon burger. It had red onion, a super sweet tomato, and a nice leaf of remained lettuce. The combination with sauce was delicious. They gave me lots of the tasty fried zucchini with ranch that was also delicious. The decor isn't great. The workers were very friendly and helpful. It looked like they had a good selection of beers on tap. We will definitely be back to try other items

When I saw the reviews this place had received on Yelp, I couldn't believe that I've driven by this building so many times without stopping. It warranted a visit, for sure!
The restaurant has a neat dive-y feel to it that I liked. They had a guitarist and stand up basist playing jazzy music, which definetely added to the ambiance. It's also to be noted that they serve Hangar24, a plus for supporting the local brewery. They also have a pool table and a fresh fish counter.
We ordered the fish and chips, which were on the daily special, and an order of fried calamari to share. The calamari seemed fresh and was cooked so that it was still succulent and not too chewy. I would have liked the batter to have a bit more seasoning, as it was a little bland in flavor. The fish and chips were good, also fresh tasting with a nice portion size. Their tarter sauce is really tasty, and like any good place that has fish and chips, they had malt vinegar, on request. (A must for me. I got fish and chips somewhere else recently and they didn't have any and offered me distilled vinegar, ick.)
I would like to try their non-fried items next time, though their grilled fish plates were a little pricey ($20 each). One odd thing, is that their kitchen was all open and exposed to the dining room, by design. Unfortunately, it was a little weird, because you could see their two cooks playing on a cell phone, could overhear them talking about You Tube videos on the phone, and could occasionally hear them swearing while conversing with the other. You would think that if your kitchen was exposed to your customers like that, you'd want to put off the best impressions.
Overall, the food I ordered was decent. It all happened to be fried, and there's only so much you can be impressed with fried food, which is why I'm interested in trying the grilled dishes next. Our waitress was great, and always had drink refills there, not to mention she was very nice. Currently, I don't understand all the high reviews, as it was average for me, but I'm guessing it's all from their grilled menu items, and not in the fried daily specials. -

Awesome seafood! Fresh!
Decor is a bit strange but does not detract from the food. In fact, it became interesting fodder for conversation with my dinner party. I guessed that the building used to be a church, with religious icons and a pew and piano in the restaurant. I thought it was... charming lol.
Service is friendly, although they don't really offer full table service. However, they have a good selection of beers, all manners of fried seafood, and fresh oysters too! Hush puppies are amazing!
Can't wait to go again :)Listed in: IE Awesome-NESS

A n awesome place for dinner and fun. Great fish! Pick your fresh fish from their counter and take it home or have them cook it for you. Excellent menu, excellently prepared. Friendly funky atmosphere, live jazz musicians on the weekends.
Get there early to be sure you get the fish you want--they buy one day's worth at a time. -

Our 1st visit to have dinner on Saturday night, the food was delectable. The live music was tasteful and the owner was chatty! Although there were a lot of tables that had not been cleaned off, we just sat at the bar. The crab cakes were amazing and the grilled tilapia to die for!

When I have a craving for fresh fish, I go to Little Fisherman. (A tip to the wise: check out fish in the display case first for best selections.) I love that is a no-frills kind of place. The fish is always simply seasoned, the fries are always hot and crispy, and I love their tartar sauce. I am also a huge fan of Mike's grilled calamari steaks. Sometimes he'll top the calamari with butter, garlic, lemon, and parsley. YUM!
The service is always cordial and efficient. It's moderately priced, and best of all, you don't have to travel to the beach area for good seafood. -

Coworker and I were craving some fish tacos and the only place that jumped in my head was Rubios, but we wanted something different. I found the little fisherman on yelp and thanks to the good reviews we decided to give it a shot.
Location: Um yeah... Middle of industrial area in Redlands, between a gas station and abandoned car dealership, and across the street from a body shop and the railroad tracks. If that doesn't scare you off good....
Food: Amazingly fresh fish, coworker had Grilled Salmon tacos and I had a Mahi Mahi Taco and fish and chips made with fresh cod.
Salmon tacos were really good according to my co worker, we looked at the fish case and saw what looked good. the Salmon was very fresh and they used the fish from the display case. Very generous portion and reasonably prices.
Fish and Chips, they were good but nothing to brag about, but the Mahi Mahi taco was delicious. Next time will only get tacos.
The Ono looked really good and may try it next time i am there. Lots of deep fried stuff and also grilled.
Worth checking out again. -

I have already posted for this restaurant but I have to add a little note since I went back recently and had a great experience. The restaurant recently started bringing in Orange Roughy which is officially my new favorite fish. It is so light and delicious and takes on flavor so well. I had it blackened and it was just perfect. And I got a really nice salad with it. The best fresh seafood around for miles.

Palo Alto, CA
This restaurant/fish market is located between some auto repair place and what used to be the Toyota dealership. Though it's large, it has a pubish atmosphere, as it's quite dim in there and there's a large bar area. It's clean, and the fish, though expensive, seem pretty fresh. The food there is okay-- they have a tendency to overcook and char most of their fish, which is a shame considering how fresh the fish is. The fish tacos are pretty good, and come with a generous portion of filling.
This is a great place to take kids, and a fun place to come on weekend nights as they usually have some sort of musician performing at that time. I would go back more often if the food was less expensive and not overcooked. The quality is there, though, which is rare for this area. -

The venue is far to be desired the location and ambiance is most unlikely for great seafood. There is a lot to criticize, but I have searched all over Los Angeles and San Bernardino for fried oysters done right since Anthony's Fish Grotto in San Diego stopped serving it. I also had the fried Wahoo and their fried hushpuppies at Little Fisherman Seafood and it was great. I only hope they would improve their coleslaw. I would drive 50 miles for the food. The food is good, the place, not so good!?

Claremont, CA
When I look for a place, I look for quality of food and service. Atmosphere doesn't really matter to me. I'm not far enough from my college days to really care or even notice, though I am far enough away to not sweat the prices so much.
That being said, the food here was excellent and the service superb. Last time I went, I started with the calamari. It was exceptional. Thick slices of perfectly-breaded squid that was surprisingly tender. Perfectly executed. For a main course, I had the salmon. Again, cooked to perfection. Not dry, not raw, good thickness. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating to special requests.
Sure, it's more expensive than you'd expect given the ambiance, but it's definitely top quality food. And you have to love a place that DOES run out of certain fish because it's fresh every day.
And they have Hangar 24 on tap there, which is a pretty tasty local brew made near the Redlands airport. -

The seafood was flesh, the service was okay, i rated at 3 out of 5. price-wise? too expansive. I had a live lobster, one fish dish and two mugs of draft beer, the total bill came out about $85 with tip? I spent $100! The lobster was great! but the fish wasn't good at all, it was over cooked.

I previously worked at little fisherman seafoods and I can honestly tell you that this is the greatest seafood in the world. The homemade tartar sauce, well don't even get me started but you could eat a bowl of the tartar by itself and you would be more than satisfied. Everyone is friendly and works hard to prepare the best dishes for their customers. Looking for the best seafood around? Well look no further than little fisherman, you won't be disappointed, you have my word people, go eat there now!!

My wife and I have spent six nights in Redlands and ate at this restaurant five times! We travel a lot and eat at many restaurants and this place is exceptional. If ambiance and decor are your thing don't go. Its simple, clean, excellent customer service and the fabulous food is the focus. There is an amazing selection of fresh seafood cooked to perfection. We've had the tilapia, swordfish and other things and never been disappoinged and in fact we've been very very impressed and we don't impress easily. The shrimp cocktail will blow your mind! The sides of frys and coleslaw are the best. My familiy was in the restaurant business for decades and my wife and I are truly foodies eating out all the time. The owner of this place Patsy puts the stamp of quaility on everything they serve. We have paid much more at fancy joints for much less flavor and customer service. I can't reccomend this place enough!!!
