This is the best deal I've found in Boston for any sort of hair salon. I've seen Dana twice and I've had a really enjoyable time. He listens very intently and knows exactly what I'm talking about whenever I give instructions to him.

That pretty much seems to be the best part about this place: they'll give you what you want and exactly how you want it, and at a sweet price. I came in and I didn't want a flashy haircut (just something that would flatter my large head and square facial features) with some minor flourishes and that's exactly what I got. Like I said before: I've seen Dana twice and both times have been sweet. He does a thorough job and is VERY open to suggestions.

Also I really love how friendly everyone is here. No one is uppity and pretensions are non-existant. They feel the same way that I do about clothes and styling: yeah, you should look good... but you should never take yourself too seriously doing so.

This brings me to the ABSURD decor. I LOVE it! I'm all about the blacks and purples and mirrors and leopard/zebra prints. The stylists and music coordinate with this theme, too! One wore a wonderful retro-hip wrap dress with booty heels and tights. DRIVES ME WILD! Love it. And the music! Elvis, Ella Fitzgerald... some rock, some oldies, all fun.

I wanted to love Liquid. Really, I wanted to be so excited that I would run home and write a 5 star review. Instead I'm sitting here weeks later and giving 2 stars.

I traveled though rain, T and cab for an appointment with a certain male stylist. I was taken immediately and had probably one of the better shampoo experiences of my life.

The stylist in question sat me in their chair and I explained that I wanted a couple inches taken off and a little more shape. It seemed like a really quick cut and honestly, the blow out was "ehhhhhh". I have wavy hair and I either curl it to define the curls or straighten it. The blow-out was that somewhere in-between look that I avoid on a daily basis.

The two-star review comes in when later that night I went to put my hair in a pony tail. A section of my hair was clearly longer than the rest. I would say it was about a half-inch longer than everything else. It looked really weird and I actually had to cut it myself.

I realize the cuts are only $30 but I'm a pony-tail girl so I just can't return to a place that makes that kind of mistake.

My stylist search continues....

I just moved to the boston area from philadelphia, and because finding a new salon/stylist is such a difficult project, I let my hair get a little out of control.

after lots of internet searching - I book an appointment at Liquid and go to see Derek.  I came all the way from Newton to avoid going to a snobby suburban salon (and ending up with boring hair) and totally felt like I was in the right place off the bat.  this was good, because I already knew my hair had grown out in a crazy fashion (from an angled bob, the layers at the back of my head were honestly looking like a duck's butt - and I have straight straight hair!) and I had to make fixing that the main point.  so I talked a lot to Derek about it - he was massively befuddled by the mess at the back of my head, but once he determined I wasn't afraid of short hair or funky hair - we were good to go.  sometimes you just know you're on the same page as your stylist and that is awesome.

Derek is a rock star turned stylist (and the rock star part is still there, you can tell) and transformed my hair into an adorable funky punk rock dream.  (for those of you less adventurous, I can tell you I saw some fabulous non-punky hairstyles happening around me...)

the results have now been massively wowed at over facebook by all my philly friends - and were actually loved at work (J Crew!)  I have NEVER had so much positive feedback over a haircut, and it's just so much fun!

Yay, Liquid!

I just got back from my appointment with Francesca and could not be happier. I had an all-around great experience; everyone there was helpful and friendly and my hair cut is perfect! This is definitely the place you want to go for an unconventional cut. (Though I am sure they do more normal hairstyles just as beautifully.) I will definitely be returning and recommending to my friends. Friendly people, awesome haircut and amazing price ($30!). Can't beat that.

(P.S. be aware that they accept credit cards but you CANNOT tip on the card; tips must be in cash.)

So after two years of growing my hair out from my last super-short cut, I got bored and decided to get rid of it again.  I needed something more exciting, but after days of looking at pictures of other peoples' heads, I still had no idea what would look good.  I saw so many great reviews for this place, I had to try it, even though it's a hike from my place.  I was not let down at all!

First of all, the place is even wackier looking than usual, since it's covered in Halloween decorations.  It was great.  There were all sorts of people there, from more punk kids to glamorous older women.  I had my appointment with Dana, and he basically wanted to make me more "rock n' roll" to fit my personality (I am soooo cool).  He got major points at the beginning for complimenting my eyes (he thought they were colored contacts.  Major points, there.  Anyway, about that haircut).

Usually I hate talking to people when I'm getting my haircut.  But Dana and I had tons of stuff to talk about (mainly music), and it was definitely a welcome change.  He took into account how much time I put into my hair everyday (read: basically none), the general length I wanted, and basically did the rest.  I ended up with a shoulder-length, super-layered shaggy cut that looks much fuller and healthier than my a-bit-too-long hair.  It looks awesome (picture to come).  I felt like a new woman!  Plus, he didn't criticize me for coloring my own hair, and recommended a hair wax for a little extra volume but didn't pressure me to buy it--which I think actually encourages me to check it out next time I go!

Oh, did I mention it was $30?!!  You have got to be kidding me.  Cheapest and best salon experience I've ever had--a great cut and great conversation, what more could you ask for?

Normally I don't write updates so soon after the original review, but I felt that I needed to continue to sing Francesca's praises. After my initial cut, I've gone back twice for trims and coloring.

Francesca does an amazing job with color. Granted, not everyone wants to have purple, pink, and orange hair - but still - given Francesca's meticulous coloring skills and attention to detail, I'm pretty sure anyone who sits in her chair will walk away happy. (Hell, just look at the girl - she's her own best advertisement - her color is always rocking).

Anyway, today I went in because I'd been thinking that I wanted a touch up/refresher or complete change. Luckily, I deferred to Francesca who was inclined to go with my first instinct with a bit of touchups to my already existing fun color highlights.

My hair is cut in layers and with a razor - some of the pieces are really short - and Francesca foiled every single one of those little sections. I now have a great, all over, beautiful and natural looking blonde with my typical pink, orange, red, and blue mixed in. It fits me perfectly and looks fantastic. I even got a few compliments on the walk home! :)

The best part of my coloring experience thus far though is that, like with my cuts, Francesca really listens to me and wants to be sure that I like what we're doing.

The first time I went in for a coloring, I wanted a little change when we were done - and it was so cool. Whereas I'd experienced attitude from stylists in my long ago past, Francesca just went "sure, what do you want to change." Amazing. Worth every penny.

Liquid is solid!

I'd give Katy six stars if it were possible. She made getting my hair chopped an awesome experience -- down to earth, easy to talk to, and very professional. She identified the best cut for me straight away and was 100 percent right. I'm thrilled with my new layered look!

If only I didn't live 3000 miles away ... sigh!

I can't believe I just got a fabulous haircut for $40.  Technically, it cost me $53 because I tipped both my hair stylist and hair washer.  More than worth it.

First of all, everyone was SO NICE.  I spoke with Sara (who was recommended by the person I made an appointment with) and we discussed what I wanted with my hair.  Back story: I had gone to a salon on Newbury back in April where one of the owners did not listen to me, ignored the picture I showed her, gave me a mullet, and assumed that because I am Asian I wanted an Asian haircut.  I literally cut bangs to improve it and wore my hair in a ponytail for a month and a half.  No joke.

Anyway, back to the story of this salon, Dana then washed my hair and it felt wonderful.  He even picked out a green tea with pomegranate for me and brought it over when I was getting my hair cut.  Sara talked me through the entire process and showed me how badly my hair had been chopped/mutilated.  We kept the length (first time someone has cut my hair and actually stuck to 1-1.5 inches) and smoothed out the layers.  It looks silky, healthy, and sleek.  I love it!

After this "trial" session, I am definitely going to go back for more daring things like a completely different cut and maybe some highlights.  I have finally found my go-to salon and I can stop bouncing around to various ones.

It'd been over a year since I had gotten my hair cut - not only was it looking pretty scraggly but it left me feeling pretty boo/blah on a daily basis.  Hair cuts are just one of those things that are total chores to me.

A hair cut/dinner date with my boyfriend (awww/gag) was just the push I needed and Liquid was the perfect place for the occassion on a Friday evening.  We arrived over an hour early; they couldn't fit us in early, but they exchanged some bills for quarters for the meters for us without hesitation (a request that's been met with hostility or denial elsewhere).  The atmosphere is funky & industrial, but entirely comfortable & welcoming.  All of the staff were fun, chatty, and it felt as though they were really in their element there.

Francesca was my stylist and I'm thrilled she gave me the best cut I've had in a loooong time.  I didn't have much of an idea of what I wanted, besides length and low maintence.  She did a great job taking a little bit off at a time, checking in with me to see if I liked it/if I wanted her to stop, which I really appreciated.  Francesca assured me that they would grow out nicely on their own and informed me I could stop in anytime to get a bang trim for free if I wasn't so neglectful.  I've rarely stayed loyal to a particular salon/stylist, but I have a sneaking feeling I'll be back here in a few months - Francesca may have broken my hair indifference, woohoo!

My bf's hair looks pretty damn good too, though I was too busy enjoying my own hair cut to even see who cut his hair.

P.S.  Don't miss out on a generous glass of wine!

This place is unreal on pretty much every dimension. I first met Nikki when I wanted a change for my long curly hair--she cut it into a super manageable bob that looked almost as awesome three months later as it did when I left the salon. Dana did a number on my hair today: He somehow executed on my very vague and contradictory instructions for a weird bangs situation, kept the length (the first time that's ever really happened!), was insanely detailed, and gave me a phenomenal blowdry.

Price: Can't get much better than $30. Sure, you can find a $20 trim, but shell out the extra ten bucks for a cut that will stay beautiful when it grows out.

Ambiance: Love the funky walls and stylists. Don't miss the Elvis themed bathroom. This ain't no sleek modern salon, nor some prissy Newbury St. spa, but I'm a lot more comfortable here than I do at those other places.

People: All of the stylists have been incredibly nice and very attentive--they actually listen to what I ask for and, more than any other place I've been, balance perfectly between delivering on that request and giving me a cut that's flattering for me (not always the same thing). They're chatty without being annoying and really down-to-earth.

Go. Now. This place is awesome.

I have never written a review on yelp before, but Liquid Hair Studios actually got me off my butt and got in gear to write this review. So here we go.

It started off as any normal day, I had seen the reviews about Liquid and thought about getting my hair done but it was one trust wensday afternoon that I actually said "You know what? I want to look pretty. Let's do it." And let me tell you, Im the kinda girl that usually could give two glicks about how she looks most of the time. (Seriously, the last place I got my hair done was with a friend at Blaine who dyed and cut my hair for free. For me, paying $100+ for a cut is REDONKULOUS, that money could be well spent on comic books! D: )

So I'm at the pru at around four and I decide to give this salon a go. I call them up, the receptionist is super friendly and I confess to her i haven't gotten a hair cut in ages, and i have some conditioner that I had just gotten and wanted to try out. She said that was a-okay. She was all set to set me up with Frank, but then I told her I had dye in my hair so she said "Oh, Ill put your appointment with T'mas then." I was a okay with it.

So I try walking to Liquid, get utterly lost cause im a fool, end up getting a cab there and getting charged a walloping $10 to drive from Boylston to tremont street!! Rip off , right? and then the guy has the nerve to say he doesn't have change for a twenty, so I get eight ones and a dollar in nickles back! At this point im aggravated that i got ripped off and the fact that im running late that I just hope that I don't get chastised for running behind on his appointments.

It was the complete opposite. When I walked in to Liquid hair studios I was immediately greeted by friendly faces and assured that I wasn't ruining the whole day by being behind. T'mas was already waiting for me on the couch and his super friendly smile comforted me more than any thing ever else could. We immediately got started, he set me up in the chair and asked what did I want from my hair cut, how i took care of my hair.

See, it turns out i don't take care of my hair well at all, WHICH IS GREAT TO KNOW because you know, ever since i was little I just, really didn't care about my appearance much. (I only started doing more so now, *sniff* I guess I really am growing up) I told T'mas I wanted my hair shorter, with bangs and a bit of funk to it. Most of all I told T'mas " I trust you" which when left cradled in his hands for hair care, was the right choice. T'mas took his time to explain to me hair treatment, what products to use , how to care for my weird ass hair. (its curly wavy, but then its not. I get confused most of the time about my locks) He was even more than happy to use the product i bought in my hair, explain to me what the benefits are for treating my hair with it, and gave me a step by step in how to work with not against my curls!

Now, for the actually cutting. After being brought a glass of pink lemonade (yums~!) He got to the cutting. A snip snip here, a cut cut there, and a little bit of la-de-da~ He was doing some layering that I wasn't used to and even did drastic layered framing my face that I wasn't used to but I took a deep breath telling myself 'I trust T'mas'  as he continued to work. The best part about the space is that everyone chats with each other, everyone is super chill and super friendly, and the owner was cutting the hair of a adorable little blond girl. Everyone in this place was just super happy and friendly.

Now cue the blow drying. He was doing a great job, I was totally assured everything was going to be alright. I was turned away from the mirror for the last half of my blow dry, and when he finally finished (making sure to spruce up mah bangs) he turned me back to the mirror.

I.Felt.Wonderful. I have never really been confident with a hair cut before, but this one was the golden ticket. I felt fabulous. My hair felt great, looked even better and best of all I have an underlaying of pink (dyed from mark) on the bottom half of my hair and the way he cut my locks made the pink come out more and look even hotter. I felt great, I looked great. I gave T'mas a well deserved hug and went on my merry way , practically skipping down the street. (PS- trimming bangs is for FREE, wooord)

Now seeing how Im horrible at self maintenance , i was terrified my hair would look like crap once I washed it and the curls came back. I'm happy to report that I did wash it (using the treatment that T'mas instructed me) , used the creams and gels he told me and my hair looks just as great curly as it did straight. Thats a big deal for me because I never felt comfortable with my curls, and now I think they are simply fabulous.

Moral of the story is: I will never go anywhere else. T'mas took great care of me, ($35 cut! ) everyone at the salon was super duper sweet and I have now found my Go to hair salon and stylist. I am in love.

Thanks Liquid Hair Studios and T'mas, your the best!!!

I don't write reviews. I hate writing reviews. But, I read them and appreciate them, and these reviews helped me pick Liquid. So here I am.

It took me an entire year to get the balls to cut my hair off. anentireyear. I had hair that was about 2" below my shoulder and I wanted to chop it short (think pixie-wannabe-bob). I read these reviews, called up Liquid and explained to the receptionist I was going from long to SUPER short. Who should I see? I mentioned Francesca and T.Mas, as their reviews are great, and she told me to see Franci, because she currently has short hair.

First of all - Liquid is just COOL. The atmosphere in there is welcoming and people are friendly and kind. They immediately offered me and my support system drinks, and at 6pm EXACTLY, Franci was ready for me. I sat down and just about hyperventilated when she offered me some wine. ON FRIDAY'S THEY SERVE WINE. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT ON FRIDAY (especially if you're a freak like me who needs some serious liquid courage). Anyway, Franci immediately understood what I was looking for, made a few suggestions, and then started to cut.

The best thing about Franci? She understood how big of a deal this was for me - it's a huge change. I went from below shoulder length hair to boy-short. She took her sweet-ass time in making sure I was comfortable and understood her every move. In the end, she showed me how to style it, told me what kind of product to use, and when I suggested putting color in it, she told me to make an appointment for the following week with her.

So now I've been to Liquid twice in 4 days - Friday for the cut, Tuesday for the color. Both days went above and beyond my expectations. The color came out great and Franci was STILL so awesome and way professional. In the end, I bought two of the products she used, which to me weren't even expensive (Joico product for $13, which is the same price as buying it on the interwebz).

All in all - Liquid is great. Franci is only a $30 cut (worth way more than that, though). I feel great about my hair now, I will continue to see Franci, and I WILL be recommending Liquid to others. There wasn't anything I didn't like about it.

PS - bring cash for tips, they don't add on to the cards.
PPS - their a/c isn't the BEST, so don't wear a parka when you go there.

I honestly do not understand the near 5 stars, even with over a hundred reviews... So disappointing, considering the price and the fun decor/atmosphere!

I've been shopping around Boston for the perfect hair salon: cheap, but quality. Since moving to JP September '08, I've gone to Hair Adventure (thinned out my normally thick hair to the point where my ponytail was a third of it's normal density!), Debu (excellent cut, but too far and a little expensive), and Station 8 (awesome, but too expensive).

I've really, really wanted to go to Miss Laura's in JP, but they always book way in advance and never have anything open day of. I'm the kind of person who HAS to get my hair cut the second I start to want a change - noooo patience.

Anyway, I stumbled upon Liquid and was pleased to see that, even if a little out of the way, it seemed to be cheap and quality. Cheap yes - quality no.

I went on Halloween for a cut with Frank. I went in with a slightly overgrown bob, the kind that's shorter in the back. Basically, I wanted a trim to restore it to it's former glory. What I got was all one length, very blunt and uneven layers. Uneven as...not the same length at all. It was just a choppy cut all around. The layers also didn't blend in to the rest of my hair at all, so they created a mushroom effect almost. Not flattering - I wore it pinned up or in a half ponytail the whole week.

The actual appointment went well; we chatted about our costumes (He showed me a picture of his impressive Alien - like, 70's movie one - costume). I was a little off-put when he started creating layers that weren't there before, but I decided to trust his judgment. What also threw me off was his method of thinning out my ends. Instead of taking time to comb out small sections, he just started chopping randomly into huge chunks of hair. It just appeared hasty and half-assed.

At the end of the appointment, I let him dry a little, but I didn't do a full blow out, since I was getting antsy to get home and prepare my costume. When I got home, I dried it more and straightened, which is when I noticed the blunt mushroom layers. I figured it might have been a result of not doing the blowout, so he hadn't spotted the mistakes. On Monday, I called back and made an appointment for Thursday to get it fixed.

What I got that second time around was a bunch of blame: I should have stayed for the blow out the first time around, my hair looks uneven but that's because it's just turning under on one side (I haven't had that problem in the past though...), I have such thick hair, which is creating the mushroom cut. Each of these comments was also basically cutting me off when I was trying to fully explain what I thought was wrong and what I wanted fixed. Once again, he seemed hasty and like he wasn't even listening to what I wanted.

The results the second time around were better...the layers finally blend and general choppiness/unevenness is gone. EXCEPT THE LEFT SIDE OF MY HAIR IS CLEARLY LONGER THAN THE RIGHT! WTF????

I have gotten lots and lots of good hair cuts, so it IS possible to work around my "problematic" hair. In fact, I've only ever gone back to get my hair fixed twice. Once for a cut, and once to fix my worst idea ever: a perm. So, I'm not picky...this was just that bad.

All in all - perhaps Liquid is worth the 4 1/2 stars, but, if you go...DON'T GO TO FRANK. He ruined this supposed "wonder" salon for me!

I've had my hair cut by the same person (Arthur Quinn) for the past decade. And as much as I adore Arthur (see my previous review of A. Quinn Hair Studio), I found myself desperate for a haircut the very week Arthur was on vacation. My hair was the longest and unruliest it has ever been. The title song to the musical Hair was quickly becoming my anthem. As bad as I felt booking with someone else, I knew I couldn't get an appointment with Arthur for at least two weeks. Enter Liquid Hair Studios.

Making my way up to the door of Liquid, I found my already big grin growing wider and wider. I could hardly believe my eyes and ears -- beautiful garden with lovely tables and chairs, melodic live guitar music and singing wafting through the air. I loved this place immediately.

Inside I found the equal parts charming and cool Jamie at the reception desk, welcoming me warmly for my first visit and offering me a glass of wine. Red or white, served in a heavy glass goblet -- such a class act. Other offerings included a tub full of PBR on ice and a selection of colorful candies.

I can't exaggerate how wonderful the energy inside Liquid felt. Funky decorations and friendly people abound!

Since my appointment was originally with Frank, who had called in sick that morning, Jamie had called me earlier in the day to ask if I want to a) rebook with Frank or b) come in to have my haircut with one of the owners for the same price as a cut with Frank. Desperate for a haircut and always happy to have my hair cut by a pro, I opted to have it cut by one of the owners.

When I met Cary, I instantly felt comfortable, while at the same time knowing I was in for an exciting haircutting adventure. Cary's a large bald guy who carries himself with confidence. After explaining my situation (i.e., same stylist for ten years, essentially same haircut for longer, maybe wanting something a little different, n-e-r-v-o-u-s), he boldly took about five inches off my length and, when he saw the obvious look of panic on my face, called over to one of his colleagues, "We have a panicker on our hands. Get her another glass of wine!" When all was said and done, I felt great. And 24 hours later, I feel even better. Cary managed to give me a new look that really suits my features -- one for which I never would have known to or dared to ask. He was extremely patient with me, explained the ins and outs of haircare, listened carefully, and really got me out of my rut.

I'm in a bit of a pickle now, as I am in love with two hairdressers. I suppose girl could have worse problems...

This place is pretty awesome.

No really, it is.

The last time I went to a salon (some random one on Newbury Street) the hairdresser didn't really talk to me, and I sort of sat there in an awkward silence while I was getting my haircut. My cut at Liquid was completely different.

I first heard about this place from an acquaintance. She was rockin' an awesome haircut, and when I asked, she said she had it done at Liquid.

When I walked in, I noticed the awesome decor of the place. It seemed very punk, which is awesome. While waiting, I was offered wine, lemonade, etc, which was kind of cool.

When T.Mas began to cut my hair, all I really offered him in terms of what I wanted was that I wanted a "razor cut" and I wanted it to look "cool." With these minimal directions, he managed to give me a pretty nice looking haircut. Not exactly what I envisioned, but, well, I didn't give very specific directions. :)

I am definitely coming back, this place rocks.

Also, make sure you bring some cash for a tip! They accept credit cards for the actual price of the haircut, but take cash tips only!

Francesca made a miracle happen and completely transformed my look. So sweet, took her vision and went with it and I walked out a happy camper. I'm the worst with knowing what I want, and thankfully, it wasn't a problem for her. Love the salon, the vibe, and the refreshments are a nice touch. I'm so glad I took the yelpers advise and went here! You should too!

I love Sara. She's pleasant and laid back, and always gives me great cuts that draw tons of compliments. She gives me simple styling tips, all in line with my 5 minute max styling routine. She makes sure my cuts will grow out well, knowing that I'll inevitably delay my next trim past its due date. She never tries to push products on me, and was the first stylist ever to recommend an inexpensive blow dryer at Marshalls (I love it-- works great).

I've gone to her three times now, and am always delighted with her work. It's great to find a stylist whom I can trust, who won't make me feel bad for my total inattentiveness to style, who will somehow make me feel stylish anyway. For $40. Sweet deal!

I don't feel hip enough for Liquid, but no one else seems to notice.

I went here a few weeks ago and don't plan to return.

-- I had to wait almost 30 minutes past my appointment and was only acknowledged when I asked if everything was okay. I know salons often run behind but it would have been nice for someone to notice how long I'd been waiting.

-- The worst part, though, was my hair wash -- this is the part of the salon routine that I absolutely love (who doesn't?!) but Camille, who kindly offered to wash my hair while Katy finished up with her client, absolutely brutalized my scalp. I have never known such pain -- the water started out scorching hot, resulting in a yelp from me...followed by 15 minutes of her nails scraping and pulling through my strands with such ferocity that tears streamed down my face. My scalp is starting to tingle just writing this as I think back to how horrible the experience was. It was unbearably awful!

-- My haircut was just fine, Katy was really sweet and friendly, and the $30 price tag in the South End was appreciated, but I'm running back to Escape Salon after this experience. $30 more is worth it.

i have been dreading this. love my haircut, love love love love the staff... and furthermore, i will be back- that's how much i loved them/my haircut. it truly is the cut that i asked for, the cut that i envisioned. that practically NEVER happens, sadly.

so why have i been dreading this review? because i must confess that i cannot recommend the color services. i hate being an honest yelper sometimes. it isn't a train wreck, it just isn't what i requested. which is highly problematic for me.

*fumbles with l'oreal hair color box, dejectedly observes directions... dons rubber gloves, trudges to bathroom ...

i will reiterate though- my haircut is a FIVE STAR HAIRCUT and i will return for as long as i live in this area.  (unless they ban me for this review...) (vich zey vouldn't b/c zey vere all zooper niiiice and i vish zey vere my freendsss)

Based on the yelp reviews, and a few friends, I decided to try this place out a couple of  weeks ago when I realized my hair was out of control and needed taming. Called and randomly got an appointment with T. Mas, but was both pleased and excited about it.

Came in right on time and they got to work. Frank washed my hair while talking to me about music and upcoming shows, then handed me over to T. Mas, who quickly interpreted my seemingly nonsensical hair request into one of the best cuts I've ever had. Seriously, two weeks later and I'm still tossing my hair around like a shampoo commercial! It's growing out really well and everyone I know has absolutely loved it so far.

As for T. Mas himself, what a cool dude. We chatted, but not too much, and he gave me lots of useful advice for how to care for my hair and style it after I walked out. I took everything he said to heart and already notice a difference in how my hair behaves.

I think I might have finally found a regular hairstylist to go to... and all for $30 + tip! BEST DEAL IN TOWN.

Liquid is the best and most affordable salon in Boston, hands down. I used to swear by Betsy (who's since moved on, sniff) but when I got a botched cut at home in NY I ran right to Camille, the boss lady, who not only fixed my cut, she did it for half of what she usually charges.

Plus, there's an Elvis theme in the bathroom. It really just doesn't get much cooler than that.

Great atmosphere, cool people, and quality haircuts/color that won't bust your wallet open. Make sure to call ahead if you want a specific stylist.

Only caveat: NO TIPS ON CREDIT CARDS, dudes. So bring cash. (Or hit the ATM around the corner before you get there.)

Update-- got my hair colored by Katy and I may now have a girl-crush on her. Like I said last time, she's very receptive to what you actually want, not just what you think you want. Does that make sense? Either way, LOVE LOVE LOVE it here.
Oh and I discovered that on Fridays they have free wine. Damn skippy. Watch out though, Katy's an enabler.

Sara is kind of a genius.  She gets that I am insanely busy and wait far too long between haircuts, and works some sort of magic that makes my haircut look good while it's growing out.

... and, of course, you gotta love the decor!

Liquid is Amazing.
Betsy is Amazing.

I booked an appt with her about a year ago when I let her chop all of my hair off, bleach it and dye it pink.  It looked so good.  She was so tasteful in the placement of the pink, leaving it just under my part so that I could cover it up, or really let it show.
She always did a consultation with me before starting anything to see what I wanted.  And as my hair was processing she would meticulously scrutinize my hair, just like a monkey inspects his brother for bugs.
I've never hair a stylist pay that much attention to my head. ever.

In time, I moved to Providence and have been unable to see Betsy.  And this makes me sad. Because I trusted that girl.  I went to see a couple other people in Providence, never really satisfied, and always a little scared that they wouldn't do what I wanted.

So on Saturday, with 2 inch roots, I booked another appointment  while in Boston and I am SOOO glad that I did.  My hair looks amazing!

Everyone that works there is so nice and incredibly cool.  They all have their own unique sense of fashion. The place is decorated all crazy like.  Leopard print wall, disco ball, rainbow stripe wall, Elvis bathroom!
They offer you cookies and ice tea and always have dishes of candy sitting out, just like Grandma!

Its the kind of place that you always will want to come back to.  In my case I needed to, because no one can do my hair like Betsy can!

The search is over! I came here for the first time and got a cut from Cary. A haircut and a yummy little lemon cake. I fell in LOVE! With Cary and the cakes and, most importantly, my haircut! I thought that I would never go to anyone but Cary. Then one day, I had a last minute hair emergency, and I Cary was out of town, so the person on the phone recommended Katy.
I was scared. I'll be honest, maybe it makes me sexist or whatever, but I generally prefer haircuts from men. Whenever I've gotten a haircut from a woman, there's been something terribly wrong with it, like a huge chunk taken out the side of my head. So I came pretty close to canceling my appointment with Katy. However, due to the emergency circumstances, I wasn't able to reschedule, so I kept my appointment.
I'm so glad I did because Katy was AWESOME!!!! She was friendly and personable and my hair looked HOT afterward. She has proved that my prejudice was undeserved. I love the haircut she gave me and it has been so easy to work with.
I was also blown away at the cash register when the haircut came to about 1/2 what I'm used to paying.
I love this place!!!!

You know what: low prices, talented stylists, and flexible scheduling equals five stars. T.Mas ($30) and Katy ($30) have both cut my hair, and just rock. I am very indecisive, and they have both managed to give me some seriously sweet haircuts that grow out very nicely. For the price, you really can't go wrong. Highly recommended.

And this just in: Francesca is a genius.

FYI, Betsy, who is a fabulous stylist, no longer works at Liquid. But have no fear: you'll never be in bad hands here.

Okay so even though my haircut is gonna take some getting used to, I got what I asked for: something funky, new and fun to look at. So I saw Allix T's review and immediately called to see if I could get an appointment for this evening after work. Francesca was available and I booked a 6:30 cut with her. I arrived 30 minutes early because I thought it would take forever to find a parking spot on Tremont, but I got one right out front! Francesca took me at 6:30 and was awesome. We sat and talked about what I was going for, for about 5 minutes and then off I went to the shampoo station. The girl who does the shampooing was super nice and we chatted the whole time. NOW time for the cut. I wanted something different, and I wanted it to be a versatile cut that would still look good when I grew it out because ultimately.. thats my goal. I was just sick of the all one length BLAH look. Here's the best part.. I have always wanted full bangs (instead of the side swiped ones I had before) but because of my widows peak I was told my NUMEROUS stylists that it just wouldnt happen for me. Francesca assured me we could get it done.  She cut a ton of layers into my hair, took the dead stuff off and with a razor, and by pulling forward more hair.. she gave me ...(drum roll please) BANGING BANGS!!! They are absolutely my fave part of the hair cut. The rest is cute enough but I will like it a ton more once it grows out. She showed me the way to cut them and told me to start training them down, and eventually they will go. I love them... even if my boyfriend doesnt. He openly told me he hated it.. but guess what.. Its my hair and we'll just call it even from the time he spent about 8 months with one of the worst mustaches in the history of facial hair. Besides.. he'll get used to it. Bottom line though.. Francesca listened to what I had to say and used her own creativity to give me something unique. Thanks lady.
The shop itself is awesome. Great funky decor, and tons of tattooed, and fashionable people walking around.. which is always a good sign when I am looking for a funky hairstyle. Everything from the girl who greeted me, to the girl who washed my hair... to the BANGS! were excellent. And the best part? It cost me 30 bucks. We are talking South End here people. You dont have to spend 2 million dollars to get a kick ass cut. So go with an open mind and get a whole new look! When you get home and your boyfriend doesnt like it.... tell him to go screw and then go spend 20 minutes in the mirror staring at yourself and trying out different styles... My advice.. go to Liquid for a drastic change and walk out a new woman.

I've been going to see Jeff at Liquid hair studios for a couple of years now (since 2005... I think). My friend and I were originally hooked by his haircuts - his attention to detail and ability to give me a great cut that I can easily manage on a day-to-day basis are unmatched.

I have been using Yelp for years and haven't written a review yet.. until now! I moved to Boston in January and have been to 2 other salons before I found Liquid. They were both extremely overpriced and did a very average job.

My hair is very thick, and shoulder length.. and it takes someone skilled to cut it or else it looks like I have a huge crazy bob on my head. I decided to try Liquid after being disappointed at the other 2 salons, and made an appointment with T Mas.

I am in LOVE with my hair!!! And his haircuts are only 30 dollars! WHAT?!? Highlights are kind of expensive.. my total was $150 before tip (no tips on a credit card, btw). But WOW.. I am very picky with my haircuts.. I don't like a plain cut.. I like style! My hair is perfect... work appropriate with a little bit of flair.

I have finally found a hair stylist I will be seeing on a regular basis.  Definitely go see him! He has only been cutting hair for 5 years.. which I think is crazy.. he must have a GIFT!

Here's A Quickie We Can Just "Bang" Out

Aside from my squishy techy-talk, there's nothing more dishwater dull than girls dishing about hair salons. Thus therein lies a fundamental difference between chicks and dicks.

Let's trade places for a moment. You tell me about iPhone jailbreaking, and I'll tell you about haircuts. Deal?

My turn. All the girls I know who walked out of here look really postcoital yummy. At least 5 in the past year.

Liquid is the master of the

Long Bang
Thank You Ma'am
Staccato Layered
I'm The Playa
Shaggyrelish
Thrust My Pelvis
Just Did It Wid'cha
On The Kitch'n Formica
Super Swifty Du

of 2008. Faith.

I actually recognized the style twice last year before some of my friends told me.

So can you help me out with getting EDGE to work on T-Mobile with an iPhone 3G? I really really need to run some unit tests tonight. Look! Pretty hawt, huh? It tests for exceptions on the server side too! Swoon, swoon...

Thanks babe. You're the best. Even before I tousle your mane and you fix up my iPhone.

I'm REALLY happy with the cut I got from Betsy at Liquid Hair Studio! I ran into a girl at Zaftigs who had just the cutest little cut & she recommended I try Betsy...and said that a cut was only $35...I was in need of a shape up, so I decided to visit their salon in the South end. SO fun!

The staff is Super duper friendly and the salon is funky & eclectic with zany art & objects everywhere...and a shrine to elvis in the bathroom.

My cut was just what i wanted. Some added style and layers as I grow my hair in...the layers are great and I've gotten tons of compliments when I blow dry & style it! (this almost NEVER happens with my hair, so I'm giving Betsy huge props!)

I liked the cut so much I sent another friend to Betsy last week and she was happy with the layers & updated look she got, too.

Hoooooray!

I have lived in Boston for about 6 years and have had a total of 4 "professional" haircuts.  My hair is an animal in its own and needs to be treated as such.  It is thin but curly, which no one EVER listens to this fact.  I have had my hair razored numerous times and it seems most hairdressers give you the "shut the eff up im the professional" crap and then an hour later you walk out horrified wondering what the hell just happened.

Not this time! I have been cutting my hair myself but finally realized I am too lazy and to give in-  Enter T.Mas.  Not only a really chill guy who doesnt force irritating conversation but also LISTENS to you!!!

Item 1-Keep my length-most people nod and then hack off a good 3 inches

Item 2- Be creative but I am lazy so I need it to be easy- check-blow dry and go

Item 3- My hair is curly and thin- usually this results in me with a razored poodle hairdo because the bottom is too heavy- T.mas gave me short layers with sass

Last but certainly not least he didnt shove their products down my throat instead suggested low cost OTC stuffz.  I think I am in like with this place.  In fact I actually made another appointment-first time ever!  Actually scratch that last but not least part...heres the best part- it was only $30!!!! My mouth literally dropped and I asked if they were kidding...apparently not.

On rare occasion I feel pretty.  When this happens, I get really, really excited.

Katy at Liquid cut my hair and made me really, really excited.

Feeling a little down in the dumps and bit frumpy in the hair department I called Liquid the other day and asked if there were any appointments for that evening.  There magically were and the friendly receptionist provided me parking tips since I had my car with me and scheduled me with Katy.

I arrived into the funky-colored salon, which actually matches my apartment's paint color scheme, and met with Katy.  I gave her the details of what I wanted done (basically a clean up of layers, bangs, and cut off an inch or so to encourage grow out).  Katy chatted me up a bit and was so easy to talk to.  Usually I despise talking to stylists because it's awkward and I just want my hair done.  We got along well though and had a fun, non-distracting conversation.

Throughout the whole process, Katy explained what she was doing and why.  She mentioned what scissors she was using, then why she blow dried my hair over the flat iron, and basically her process of working with my hair.  Since I wear glasses and cannot see at all what is happening until it's all said and done I really appreciated having the play-by-play.

Once I could see what Katy did I was THRILLED.  My hair was the perfect length, just what we discussed.  The bangs were right where they needed to be (for the first time ever, actually) and she even double checked to make sure I was happy.  Even better, bang trims are free between cuts.  The layers were amazing, giving my naturally thing hair much more volume.

So great.  So pretty.  So excited!  And $30?  Really?  Amazing (and close to work with ample street parking if need be).  I'm in love.

FYI-tips have to be in cash.  Cuts/color/style/etc. can be on cards.

My hair doesn't so much grow down, but out. I have a white girl curly 'fro. I was wandering around the South End and stopped in on a whim. Not only was I in the chair in less than 10 minutes, I had a lovely time with both Dana who washed my hair and Tomas who transformed it!

I've never actually been anywhere that has a separate hair washer person, or to someone who knows how to cut curly hair! I just thought my head was doomed, I didn't know I could have big bouncy curls that don't itch my face. Tomas is awesome! He didn't even laugh at me when I said I use Herbal Essences. He gave me some other cheaper brands to try instead, which is great. I'm used to being told to buy small bottles of $50 shampoo, so I'm glad he was so receptive to my cheapness.

It's fun to listen to the staff banter back and forth and overhear all of the other conversations going on as well. I was prepared to pay upwards of $75 for all of this -- and I almost skipped out of there after paying $30! I will definitely be back.

After going to a salon in Brookline for color and a simple trim, something inside me told me they wouldn't give me an amazing cut.  My hair is, scratch that, WAS pretty long and my slanted bangs grew out to the point where I could pass for a bag lady.  With the tough economy, you almost wish you could cut your hair yourself to save money.  But why would you when you can go to Liquid and book with Francesca?!?!

I booked my appointment at 3pm for Saturday, Valentines Day and as soon as I arrived, the receptionist let my Stylist know i was there.  Francescia greeted me with a smile and asked me several questions regarding what I wanted and what my needs were (fast and easy to style, edgy yet simple) as well as offering me something to drink.  I opted for the lemonade.  It was delicious.

The shampoo and conditioner they used smelled wonderful as well as the products used later.  All of them left my hair feeling great.  Francesca was pleasant and she gave me the most awesome cut I ever had.  Better than what I expected.  She took her time and I didn't feel as though I was just another a customer.  I walked out looking like a new person with a cut that was way beyond my expectations and all for $30.

You won't regret coming here and seeing Francesca.

I got a cut and color yesterday with Frank, and I LOVE it. The place was fun, easy going, and funky. All of the staff were fun and friendly, and there are STARBURST everywhere to eat! love that. My hair came out super cool and sexy, and was a big change from my crappy boring suburban locks to short badass hair. Umm, biggest surprise? How inexpensive it was! cut and color- less than $100. can't believe it either? It's true. Go here, you won't be bummed, promise. (oh, and i found parking right out front.....)

I used to love Liquid in its heyday.  Dan was the best stylist any girl could wish for and the attitude of the staff was always top notch.  I've been back a couple of times and have been disappointed both times.  Both times i had to wait 10-20 minutes when i had made an appointment.  The haircuts were meh.  Not worth the trek.

absolutely delicious.

i called liquid up b/c tend to get my cuts on the funkier side. i googled "funky haircut, boston" and liquid came up. i told the receptionist who booked me that i had no idea which stylist i wanted. but i gave her a description of what i wanted (thin asian hair, something asymmetrical with bold colors) and right away she knew exactly who to book me with ... nikki.
to sum it all up, nikki hooked me up!! i could probably write up a 10-page piece about my experience, but i'll just spell out the highlights:

**super friendly and accommodating staff! i was 10 minutes late and they gave me no hassle about it. and any group of people who can have a mini-dance party to techno-bollywood music gets respect from me.
**nikki listened to me. she didn't pressure me to buy products, but she did give me advice on how to take care of my unique haircut. she even told me that when the red fades out, you can buy some cheap coloring at newbury comics to save me the time/money of going back to the salon.
** i was in there for about 3 hours for a cut and partial highlight.... i only paid $100. WOW!
** as soon as i walked out of the salon, i probably got complimented 3 different times by random people! thats when you know your stylist is legit, bravo nikki!

im definitely coming back :)
