Definately my favorite chinese restaurant!  I love their seseme chicken. I live all the way out in oregon city so if I wanna get chinese food that's where I go it's worth the trip. If you eat in the restaurant sit by the window if you can it's great for people watching. The service is really good too. I recommend going!

I really really wanted to give this place a 1*

Food is beyond bad: over fried, over sauced, over MSG'd mess (-2)
I'm never going to eat there again (-1)
Missing key Chinese food faves: chicken wing/finger, crab rangoon, BBQ spare rib (-1)

That's a 1* right?

BUT:

They are Cheap (express lunch $4.50)
and
They Deliver, and the delivery dudette was not surly and made change

Not even a one!!! The worst Chinese food I've ever had. I've had better chinese food at an all you can eat death buffet in Butt-f*!k Fla! The noodles were totally absent of any flavor, and the Mongolian beef was (ready for this) NOT BEEF!!! Take it from someone who has worked as a butcher and has "worked the wok" at one of San Francisco's top Pan-Asian restaurants (Betelnut). That was not beef, chicken, pork or fish. I would bet my culinary degree on it!!! Ling garden is serving the neighborhood catch of the day. Chinese restaurants serving seagull and cat meat may be frequently joked about, but it is common practice in many of the old places. FACT!!!

It's really sad that people here don't have access to even semi-good Chinese. The best in all of Portland is Fu Jin on Hawthorne next to Noah's Bagels (noah's sucks!!!), but it's still only OK! There is no chinese food in Chinatown, but American food pretending to be chinese eg., fried chicken pretending to be General Tso's, sesame, or lemon chicken. It's all the same (American) fried chicken in a different sugar coating. This is not Chinese food. There are also no good places out near 82nd & Devision, the supposed "New Chinatown". Not one place in an entire city serving up good Dim Sum or Cantonese food (chinese equivalent of soul food)

Two things Portlanders will never know without traveling-
Good Chinese food
Good Bagels
(someone please prove me wrong, please)

I went to Ling Garden to do the traditional Jewish Christmas dinner. They gave me tea when I sat down, which was nice. I ordered won ton soup that was a bit too spicy than what I'm used to. But still, soup on a cold day is nice. I had sesame chicken; a generous portion of it and it came on fried rice noodles and with a bowl of rice. Quite tasty.
Not to mention that the staff is friendly.

Not bad, not great, just average chinese food.
Friend and I went for dinner and had their dine-in special, this is how our experience maps to my "Great Wall of China" scale!

This place has been around for years, and has always had great food. Ling Garden is close to my work, so whenever we feel like Chinese on a weeknight, I stop here for takeout. It's an unassuming little spot that always puts me at ease when I enter. The food is always flavorful, fresh and not greasy, so we always have a good meal. Friendly service and great prices.

Oh oh oh! I love this place with a passion, I swear! We randomly strolled in here one day because 23rd was way too packed for comfort. As soon as we got in the server-person was awesome. "Helloooo hellooooo come sit sit. Anywhere, come sit." Immediately hot tea was brought to our table.

I never drink tea, but I drank it here, the green tea was just fantabulous. Right behind our table was a worker snapping green beans, fresh green beans.

I ordered the buddhist delight, and had some vegetarian rolls. They were very crispy- a little pricy for the size, but yummy none the less. The buddhist delight was full of fresh veggies, the broccoli was crisp and it didn't taste goopy and canned.

Order anything, it's all really good, and I swear I've never had such an awesome server-person.

I work just a couple of blocks away from Ling's. So a couple of my co-workers and I decided to eat there.  We got seated and had water and tea served to us.  I thought that the service was very quick.  GREAT! Since we're on lunch.  We ordered our food and we sat there eating our Hot & Sour soup while we waited.  The waitress brought out my co-workers orders.  So I was sitting there wondering why I didn't receive my lunch.  There was an older couple that was sitting behind us and they were just served their food. (I was looking around wondering where my food was) The waitress then brought my food out.  It was Sweet and Sour Chicken.  I ordered Brocolli w/ Beef.  I informed the waitress this wasn't my order.  She then grabbed the plate from the couples table and SWITCHED our plates!!  The woman already ate the egg roll that came with the lunch.  I was disgusted!  How can you RE-serve food after someone has already ate off that plate???  I told the waitress that I wanted a new order. And stated that I can't eat off that plate since someone else already ate off of it.  She gave me a disgusted look and took the plate.  She came back within 2 minutes.  I think it was still the same plate of food.  She just rearranged it differently on the plate.

I have not been back since.  Never will be.  It's hard since I crave Chinese food sometimes.  I just order if from the Cafeteria in the hospital! =o)

Not feeling like cooking tonight, I got takeout BBQ pork fried rice from Ling Garden. Didn't blow my mind but was a good price ($5.50) and tasty. I appreciate having a reliable, reasonably priced Chinese place near my apartment, and this place fits the bill.

I usually end up getting fried rice here but have also gotten things like Mongolian beef and kung pao chicken (or was it shrimp?). The hot & sour soup is pretty good. Never had a truly great meal here, but that's okay. Never had a bad meal here, either.

When I dine in, I can appreciate that this place is fairly quiet. Service is good, too.

Not really relevant, but worth mentioning: When I had dinner here with some friends a while ago, it was their infant son's first time at a restaurant.

I'm not the biggest fan of Chinese food in the world, but this place was pretty darn good - inexpensive, great service, many many options for veggies and fish (which is key and important to me).

Their veggie spring rolls were tasty ... and they do have sweet and sour sauce and spicy mustard right on the table - LOVE THAT! The service is excellent -- though heavily accented -- very very friendly. The food was tasty -- I had the garlic prawns (and was pleasantly surprised that they also had scallops). Hubby had the honey walnut prawns (top 5 I'd say) and friends had veggie claypot and garlic chicken. Very tasty all around.

They do takeout and delivery within 2 miles ... for those who want to eat in the comfort of their own living room. OH and if you want Sake get there early or Marta may drink it all. heh

kanpai!

Great food at a good price. What more can you want from a restaurant?

I have been eating at Ling Garden for about 3 years and whenever I come to Portland I make sure to at least have one meal here. The service is great and the staff is friendly and helpful.
