I've seen more than my fair share of therapists, and I've reached the point where I'm EXTREMELY picky over whom I'm willing to see, and will interview the therapist over the phone before I arrange a visit. I'm glad to say it paid off and I found a great therapist, which becomes more apparent every time someone tells me about a therapist they saw who said/conducted something unprofessionally. I wish I could explain in detail how much better and more competent Dr. Bortell is compared to the various psych professionals I've seen and met, but that would take several pages. Dr. Bortell is both warm and personable, while still keeping a professional distance. She doesn't spend your time talking about herself, and will call you out when you contradict yourself or avoid topics. I've never felt judged, patronized, or like she wanted to direct me in a way she felt was more appropriate when it wasn't beneficial, nor has she ever said anything that made me think, "You don't understand me at all." She's also up on her online pop culture, meaning you or your teenager won't have to waste time explaining blogs or social networking websites.
Her office is cozy and neutral; she usually has a few candles burning, and it's a comfortable atmosphere. She just started getting the Utne Reader in the waiting room, which is awesome. The building has its own parking lot, and Dr. Bortell's office will validate parking. It's conveniently located a block from the Fair Oaks exit on the 110, and is pretty accessible from the 10 and the 210. She accepts insurance.
