AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this place has certainly served me the best and cheapest stack of banana pancakes which i almost finished after going through two porkchops, a serving of rice and half a serving home fries.
im glad that i found this through yelp while we were in dc (yay android phones! wish there was a yelp app for android) and this, in my book, is the best place for breakfast.
and if im ever in town again, IM COMING BACK! woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is a secret to excellent service here. One must converse with the waitresses using their own "1950's diner lingo".
Me: How you doing this mornin', sugar?
Waitress: Been better darlin', but thanks for asking.
Me: Rough night, honey?
Waitress: Where do I even begin, cupcake?
Me: Now don't be so hard boiled. Tell me what's on that pretty little mind of yours.
Waitress: Well Freddie Jr. took me out on a date last evenin', thought he was real swell too. *throws hands on hips* But all he had his dirty little mind on was a game of back seat bingo. The wet rag!
Me: Looks like he's crusin' for a bruisin'.
Waitress: I'm sorry sweetheart, how would you like your eggs?
Me: Baby, you cook'em anyway you like and throw a pretty name on them. As long as they're from the fridge I'm happy.
And that's how you leave this place having regular coffee refills, the freshest darn eggs this side of the country, and a pair of bright pink lip marks on your cheeks from a 60 year old waitress.
Who knew there was a greasy spoon diner in the middle of downtown?
I had a friend in town and we wanted to grab breakfast before she left. She typed in "greasy breakfast" into the Yelp Search and this was the first thing that came up.
Food is standard greasy spoon fare, but it's delicious and worth weaving around the crowds waiting to get into Ford's Theater to get to. Think Waffle House, except not as sad and Lincoln-themed. I also always see a fair amount of cops (eating here, not working here...), which is always a good sign at a diner.
I love this place! If you like divey places, you'll love the Waffle Shop!
It is right across the street from Ford's Theater, and smack dab in the middle of 4 different metro stops! Inside things are simple. There are what appear to be several countertop "squares" inside, so tons of counter seating. Service was quick and efficient. The FOOD was awesome!!! I had to order a waffle and was a little worried I'd be disappointed when I got my waffle and it was just a thin little thing (not belgian!). But when then I tasted it and YUM!!! Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and the flavor! My friend and I were saying that the waffles would be great under ice cream and chocolate sauce! I also had the sausage patties and the homefries, which were both tasty! Highly recommended!
This is pretty much a local version of Waffle House. The waffles are fairly thin and wide, pretty standard. The price was excellent, my friend and I were able to dine for under $10 for the two of us. It's a dive, but nothing wrong with a dive breakfast every once in a while.
This is a excellent breakfast place, not much known to tourists, even though it is smack-dab in the center of tourist part of Washington, DC. It's kinda old and beaten down, but the food is excellent --- diner / coffee shop food. Nothing fancy.
The best thing of all is their waffles... these are waffles as they are meant to be. Thin, crispy, with a faint vanilla smell. Ahhh! Lots of toppings, and you can order your eggs, bacon, sausage, scrapple, grits, toast, or whatever you want... and still get out of there for under $10. The servers and counter staff are really friendly, fast, and helpful.
Skip the expensive hotel breakfast buffets and the fast food nightmares and try the Lincoln Waffle Shop for a
It's like being transported back to the year 1953 or something. It's a real place, not a fake retro diner (which are sometimes fun). This is where the working class eats. Plus lots of FBI agents from around the corner -- you'll easily recognize them. I've also seen a U.S. Senator in here, and several high ranking Representatives -- come early to see them sneaking in here to eat real food. Sometimes greasy, but isn't that how it is supposed to be. Coffee is pretty good, too. "Bottomless cuppa coffee!"
Don't be frightened by the appearance, and don't believe it when people tell you that it has closed (it moved several storefronts down several years ago... people thought it had closed). It's directly (and I mean, directly) across the street from Ford's Theater and the Hard Rock, right next to the House Where Lincoln Died. Easily walkable from anywhere in the downtown Metro Center area.
Another great, albeit more upscale breakfast place in the downtown area: Luna Grill & Diner, 1301 Connecticut Avenue at Dupont Circle (not Skewers Luna Cafe on P Street). Wonderful place. I will review separately.
Sometimes you just want breakfast, it doesn't matter the time of day, but the warm food hug that breakfast provides is just yearned for, needed. Enter Lincoln's Waffle shop. It was a Sunday afternoon, close to 1pm and we had a hankering for pancakes and eggs. We drove all the way to Eastern Market to try Market Lunch. Imagine our surprise when there's a big sign that says no breakfast on Sundays!! ARGH! Why?!
Thank goodness this Waffle house saved the day. Imagine a divey looking diner of yesteryear. There is plenty of counter space and they offer all the breakfast goodies you could desire. The service is friendly, efficient and quick. The food is homey and delicious. The pancakes were just right. Our eggs were cooked to order, perfect sunny side up and over medium eggs. The ham slices are slightly thicker, so meatier and more filling. You can't go to a Waffle house and not get waffles. The waffles were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, not too thick. Also, this is key, all you can drink coffee. Was it the best coffee ever? no, but just the feel of the place added to the flavor and made it awesome. We got all this food for under $15, what?! This place hit the spot and is now a favorite of mine.
Great little dive in the downtown. Food was great and the service was excellent. The banana pancakes are awesome.
DAMN yeah.
This place has soul and good eats to boot. We hit 'em up on the reg for banana and chocolate chip pancakes, which reliably induce orgasmic euphoria. Count on 'em.
Plain and simple, non-touristy fare.
Perfect for a quick breakfast. They have really good waffles!
I had 30 minutes to kill before my morning meeting so I Yelped the best nearby breakfast place. Lincoln's had good standard diner fare -- their french toast was as expected and the service was quick.
Cheap food, fun place, GREAT PEOPLE!!
I had egg & cheese on a bagel - $3 or something like that. Fries were also DELISH here. Great, greasy, cheap DINER FOOD.
Also, say hi to QUOC aka Q if you're there! Absolutely hysterical!
Quoc: Do you work at Hyatt too?
Me: No, I'm from SF. Well.. near SF.
Quoc: Where?
Me: East bay...?
Quoc: OH OH OH. SAN JOSE? UNION CITY? FREMONT? OAKLAND? HAYWARD..... SAN LEANDRO?????
Me: What. The.........Actually yes, I am from there.
Quoc: So when are you leaving?
Me: Later today
Quoc: Out of Dulles?? Flying JetBlue?
Me: YES. W...T....F.... IS GOING ON???
Free watermelon too.. yeyah!
I'd never really thought that there were any real diners in DC, but then I realized that when I was looking for them, I was a freshman living at AU and anywhere outside of Tenleytown seemed so far away.
Four years later, I found what I was looking for, here, in the most touristy, souvenir- shop laden section of DC. In fourth grade, my class went on a trip to Ford's Theatre, across the street from the then Waffle Shop. We didn't eat there; we ate a few doors down at the Hard Rock, but then again if we had, it probably would have been a liability. I can't imagine tourists eating here. It's greasy and full of the kinds of people that tourists from small mid-western towns are uncomfortable around. But according to the sweet waitress who started up a conversation with me while taking her meal- break on the next counter- stool, they do.
For me this place is DC (adjective). The steak sucks (duh) and I could probably make the same waffle in my toaster, but damn, it feels homey. I like to sit in front of the window, with eggs sunny side up and home fries, coffee and maybe a bottle of (syrupy) watermelon juice, and watch those weird people tromp all over my city streets in wonder. It's the best.
A greasy spoon if there ever was one. Good, cheap breakfast and lunch foods, served by a black lady that will call you "honey," "sweety," or "babe" depending on which superlative she used last. The service is lightening quick and the portions are generous. It's exactly what I was hoping for.
PS: The sweet tea and scrapple are delish.
So we heard the Waffle Shop was good and as we were walking down 10th (from F to E) we see a closed down "Waffle Shop." We were disappointed so we kept walking, trying to find somewhere else to eat and after a few more storefronts, we found the "Lincoln" waffle shop, which is the same place. It was definitely a dingy looking dinner with family style seating. I was a bit skeptical at first but we got our menus quickly and I ordered a waffle with bananas. Ben ordered a waffle, bacon, home fries, and 2 over easy eggs.
Everything was delicious! The waffles tasted like sugar cookies. We ended up getting an extra waffle and splitting it. We didn't even feel sick after eating it (the way I would if I had that kind of meal at Dennys). The service was fast and the server was friendly. I will definitely be back here again for breakfast/brunch. If you want good, cheap dinner breakfast, it's worth the trip.
I love this place for a quick, no-nonsense diner breakfast! Our waitress was friendly and efficient, and while the seating is communal it makes sense for a place like this.
I had two fried eggs, hash browns and bacon, and my boyfriend had scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, and three chocolate chip pancakes. Our bill (with tax & tip) was $17. For the center of DC, you really can't beat it!
For months it struck me as odd that there weren't many diner-like places in DC (everything in NW DC strives to be trendy) ... until the Waffle Shop. I probably didn't discover it until recently since it's in the middle of tourist-ville DC, next door to the souvenir shop and across the street from the Ford's Theatre.
The food is average and the selection is extensive, for a small diner, the service is quick and true to diner-food glory, it's greasy! But this is all to be expected. The Waffle Shop is nice just to sit at the counter in front of the windows and people watch and have a true diner experience in the middle of DC.
My only wish for this place is that it didn't move... not that I have ever been to the old Waffle Shop, just down the street, but from what I've heard and read, it seemed more historical and impressive than what exists now... but this will suffice.
First up - this place used to be located at 522 and moved over here.
Lincoln's Waffle Shop is your typical east coast diner. Diner food. Diner speed. Diner attitude. And diner cheap. The place itself has a handful of tables, but is dominated by a large twisting bar area.
My brother and I both basically wound up having the same thing - eggs, home fries, meat (ham and bacon respectively) and a waffle. All the food was classic diner good - nothing great, but very good. And as we were roaming around DC that morning, it was exactly what we needed. And for $25 for the two of us (after tip) - really can't beat that for a breakfast in the city.
Scrapple could be my new favorite diner-breakfast option.
This is exactly what I expected a diner to be: a bit dirty and shady, but super cheap and friendly.
We were a bit curious about that this was suppose to be where Lincoln once dined, and now it's owned (?) and run by Chinese people.
I'm really not sure why I never came here before OR why I can't have breakfast here for the REST OF MY LIFE! Because it was heavenly. The waffles were dripping with butter and it was just devine! I had ham and eggs as well... perfection! The portions weren't skimpy and it wasn't overflowing with food either. It was just mmm mmmm good! Staff was super nice and friendly, they chatted with us a bit- all locals. I learned a thing or two from them, so it was definitely neat! Can't wait to go back!
This place is how I imagined a typical East coast diner would be. It's greasy, it's heavy, it's nothing special, except for the fact that it's across the street from the Ford Theatre. Lots of cops and security people stopped in for breakfast while we ate there, so it seemed like there were a lot of regulars, including a bearded woman, oddly enough. Yes, it's true. Eat here and you might catch a glimpse of her, too.
I also learned about scrapple (an alternative to bacon, sausage and ham; apparently consists of pork livers). I liked the people who worked there; they were chatty and wanted to know all about where my friend and I were from, etc.
NO! This place is simply put a greasy spoon, cheap, old, dirty looking and basic boring food. I had the waffle, potatoes and eggs. The waffle was very disappointing, small and flat, looked a little bigger than an eggo! The potatoes were mush and the eggs fried greasy. And of course the coffee was water down crap. Also there was all kinds of drama going down there. One waitress was too busy yelling at her man in the seat behind me, no shame in her game, didn't give a rats ass who heard about him not paying the bills. Then there was a family with a toddler throwing a major tantrum because she couldn't play with the ketchup. Ugh, I ate half my food and darted out of there. Oh and in case you need souvenirs you can find a selection at the register that are dusty and faded. Um yeah never again, I don't care if its next door to the place Lincoln died!
This place makes me so happy. I've only been here a handful of times, but the service is amazing and the food is pretty good. I'm a much bigger fan of this place during breakfast than lunch (the waffle's are AMAZING). But lunch has it's perks. I was in there a few days ago to get a sandwich and a cup of coffee. I'm used to places around that area making you eat and run, but the server was so sweet. He insisted I stay until I'd had plenty of time to relax. It's one of my favorite places in DC.
This place comes across as a local legend in the reviews, but it sure didn't seem that way at 5pm on a Monday night. It was nearly empty, and the only customers besides us seemed more interested in lottery and Keno than the food. My corned beef hash was OK, but my wife's waffle and kid's french toast were totally undistinguished. No "sweetie," "honey," or "babe" on this occasion! About the only thing going for it is price-- cheap, especially considering the location in the middle of the tourist zone.
So today I just arrived in from Chicago, I was hungry and it was really good. Cheap. And delicious. The waffle was great. Typical diner food and reasonably priced.
What a fantastic find! We were staying at the State Plaza Hotel in Foggy Bottom, picked specifically because the rooms have kitchens and we thought we'd save some cash by having some meals in. Well, that lasted a few days before we started craving our favorite meal, breakfast. So, on a walk back to the hotel one night, my girlfriend asked a cop where we should have breakfast the next morning. Her answer, the Waffle Shop. Took the metro over Monday morning, came back Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, our last day.
There's nothing special about the place or the food, except that it's fast, cheap and darn good! My first meal was the banana pancakes combo, with scrapple. Holy moly, those were some good pancakes! Next morning was the waffle combo, what a great waffle and wonderful homefries. Third day was the corned beef hash. Again, fantabulous. Day four, back to the waffle combo. Every meal was good, every meal came out fast, every day the service was friendly.
My girlfriend and I love breakfast, and love this place. Friendly, friendly, friendly service. Quoc, our server three of the four times, is excellent. Very friendly, asked us where we were from, what we had already seen, how we were enjoying the city. He kindly offered to take our picture too on our final day. Just a really friendly guy. Other servers were also friendly and attentive, but nothing like Quoc! Quoc, you rock!
If I ever find myself back in DC, it'll be breakfast at the Waffle Shop again. Now, if we could just find something similar here in San Diego.
This is a great place with cheap good breakfast food in a touristy area. Dont be scared by the huge lines right outside the restaurant. Its probably the line to some tourist trap attraction. But I wouldnt be surprised if there was a line out the door to this place. We were barely able to find a place to sit for the four of us. Thank goodness we were able to snag a place at the counter. The set up to the restaurant is a bit bizarre. There is a line for carry out which is directly in the middle. Then there is a counter that zig zags throughout the restaurant. Then near the door is the counter were you pay as a dine-in customer. At this counter you can also buy lotto tickets too! I know...strange. But the food was good. It was the first time I had tried a half-grilled sausage. Not bad. Not bad at all. Service was prompt and the food came out quickly. It was a hot day and I didnt feel any AC coming through the restaurant. You may want to consider that if you decide to visit this place during the summer.
I can't say enough good things about this place. The cooks are incredibly fast at making your food so you can get in and out. I often come there with less than 10 minutes to get to work and have no problem being on time.
Secondly, they serve breakfast all day, which, in my world, is the best thing ever.
To top it off, I get my breakfast sandwich in the morning for less than $3.
For three years straight, we have made our trip to the National Chiropractic Legislative Conference in DC and have started our trip off at the Waffle Shop. For two years, it has been at the new "Lincoln" location and they haven't missed a beat. I have the rib-eye and two over-medium eggs everytime with some waffles and it is fantastic. They are fast, friendly, tasty, and super entertaining...
It is the best thing after a red-eye flight!!!
DON'T GO!!! THEY SUCK!!!
Oh how I hate thee, let me count the ways.
I can go on and on about the endless list of things wrong with this place...
from their incompetent cheap labor for waitstaff...
quality of food...even for a low-end diner....
filthy conditions of the dining space...
they are leeches... don't patron this establishment.
I asked the concierge at the Hotel Monaco for a recommendation about a local breakfast spot, and she said that guests seemed to have liked the Waffle Shop. The classic mid-century looking "Waffle Shop" on 522 10th had closed, but the sign indicated that they moved down to this location, right across from where a certain actor named Booth offed a certain president named Lincoln. The restaurant is a slightly dingy hole in the wall, with a large wooden counter that meanders through most of the restaurant. They even had an article from a local paper that proclaimed that this place is one of the best "bad eats" in town (or something to that effect). So it must have been good, right? Thankfully, yes. You won't find any refined Belgian waffles here, but for about $5, I had two waffles doused in syrup, two eggs, and a slice of ham. Sometimes a thick fancy Belgian waffle can yield to butter soaked and cheap. I was curious about the scrapple that they served, but opted not to try it after the good-natured Asian waiter explained to us that scrapple is a local favorite (with an amused look on his face). Yeah, scrapple isn't exactly well-known in California, well, at least not to the California-bred diners he was serving. The food was filling, set at a near-unbeatable price, and the place had plenty of character and local flavor.
