Review from Stacey M.
Coppell, TX
Hamburgers or a choice of 5 or 6 daily lunch plates. Down-home cooking for about $5. Most people get the food to go, either from the walk-up counter or from the drive-through window, but there are four tables if you want to eat there. The food took about 10 or 15 minutes to arrive, but the meat was obviously cooked fresh after we ordered it. One of the guys in the restaurant asked the lady at the counter who was cooking today, and she said "Mama". That just about tells you everything you need to know.
I ordered the fried shrimp plate and Honey ordered the fried pork chop plate, which was a chicken-fried bone-in pork chop. (They were out of smothered pork chops by 2:00 in the afternoon, when we got there.) The fried shrimp was fresh and good -- I made my own 'red sauce' out of ketchup and tabasco sauce, which were both on the table. The fried pork chop was excellent, but a little difficult to eat with just a plastic fork. Eventually, Honey just picked it up at ate it like a chicken leg.
Choices of sides are rice with gravy, fries, cabbage, corn, and black-eyed peas -- you get two sides with a lunch plate. Sides were good and filling, but not the highlight of the meal. The rice was a medium-grained, slightly sticky white rice with a brown onion gravy. When I asked how the cabbage was prepared, the answer was "with gravy", but I would describe it as cabbage boiled in a beef stock with bits of onion. The black-eyed peas were great -- next time I would order rice and black eyed peas as my two sides and mix them all together, like Honey did.
Bottled drinks only. The meals were served in styrofoam containers with plastic forks. The hamburgers were served in brown paper bags bleeding through with grease -- I would definitely try one of those next time -- I think they were $4 and came with fries.
