Let me be honest:
I hate going to the dentist.
I had a mega-bad experience with my last dentist in Kansas... 8 years ago. You read that right. I haven't seen a dentist in 8 years. I was a 7th grader. I'm nearing graduation from college, now. THAT's how much I disliked going to the dentist.
But I saw the LivingSocial deal for a cleaning and Yelped Dr. Obucina and decided it was worth the $70. I had been wanting to see a dentist for a while, and I would say that a cleaning was probably needed (just to be clear, I have great teeth so it's not like I had nastymouth full of woodchips; but I have this one rogue tooth that I decided needed to be set straight (hah-hah)).
Dr. Obucina was friendly, patiently answered all my questions, did not lambaste me for my lassiez-faire approach to flossing, and confidently assured me that she could fix all my dental needs.
The dental hygienist who did my cleaning was even more nice-- she apologized every time my too-sensitive-to-pain-self winced and got the job done quickly and thoroughly. even though the dentist is a place I generally dislike being, between the hygienist and the doctor, I was feeling pretty OK.
I highly recommend this place; the staff are accommodating, professional, and kind. And, I already garnered several compliments about my gleaming gnashers. Yay, teeth! -

Dr. Obucina has been my dentist for many years, even before she went to law school. When she works on my teeth, I feel that fairy fingers are in my mouth. She has done every kind of work on my old teeth--bridges, crowns, and has never lost a tooth. I have recommended her to satisfied friends. She is marvelous.

After my Maryland Bridge fell out on a Tuesday, I went to my regular dentist to get it re-glued on Thursday. He did a horrible job and traumatized me (I have horrible dental anxiety anyway)...long story short, the bridge fell out again Thursday night.
I got a recommendation for Dr. Obucina from my gal Bridget- and called to make an emergency appointment Friday morning for that same day.
Her hygienist/office manager (Leslie?) was really amazing. She put up with my millions of questions over 3 phone calls and squeezed me into the already (over) booked schedule. I left work early and made it downtown to my 3:30 appointment. They calmed my fears and were really upfront and helpful about my treatment and the cost.
She gave me the option of a temporary bridge while she sent my old one off to the lab for cleaning and re-oxidizing so it would stay better when she placed it. I've had this bridge for 10+ years and NO other dentist has done that.
She gave me the temporary bridge on Friday and made me a Monday afternoon appointment to put in the "spiffed up" original. Monday, showed up and had to wait about 15minutes or so because Dr. O was running a little late. She took her time to break out the temp bridge and get all the glue off, really prep my teeth- she used glue that is specially made for Maryland bridges, believe it or not something else no other dentist has done when re-cementing it (I found out, shockingly).
She is a great conversationalist. She made me feel at ease. Turns out she's a lawyer as well as a dentist. She really goes the extra mile, I didn't need numbing or feel any pain during either procedure. The bridge feels secure and I couldn't be happier with her work.
Her office is TINY. There are only two chairs. There is only the hygienist and Dr. O. They are also busy. The office is spotless and in a great, accessible location. You can look out over millennium park and the lake even.
The cost for re-cementing my bridge was $150, 3xs the cost of my last dentist, but the quality, time and comfort I got here vs. there was worth probably more than $150.
Dr. O is not a "preferred provider" with ANY dental insurance. I'm getting some soon, and that worries me (I'd be responsible for the balance if she charges more than my insurance "allows" for a procedure)-but I think I might have to keep seeing her anyway- its been hard to find a dentist I feel I can trust and who acts like they care about me and my dental health not just my money.Listed in: Practical Stuff

If I could give negative stars, I would.
I bought a Groupon to visit Dr. Obucina's office to see if I would want her as my regular dentist. Called to make an appointment at the end of August and it took a couple weeks for them to respond (via email), telling me that they had one Monday with a couple slots available in November (!!). I did not have Mondays available due to my class schedule, so I asked if any other day of the week was available. They responded with another appointment the next day, but only one time. That time also not available. Who makes appointments this way, anyway?
Anyway, I called back, but never got a response. I just called again (in January!!) and she tells me it's all my fault. Yes, that's right, I somehow am responsible. I'm the bad communicator. Right.
So, I told her that I want my money back and that she should not have offered a Groupon if she could not handle the volume (which, obviously, she could not). She obliges, but says that technically, "I can meet the terms of my agreement with Groupon. All Groupon required of me was to see all the patients who purchased a Groupon within one year of the date of purchase - i.e. 08/10. If you have further questions, please contact Groupon and they can confirm that this is all they required of me."
I'm very happy to say that I will not be going to a doctor who will only provide "what is required" and does not communicate well or even act friendly toward potential patients. No thank you. -

Dr Obucina is a great dentist. I found her through http://prettycity.com and found her to be comforting a very smart woman and a very competent dentist.
My boyfriend had a tooth fixed by his previous dentist. It broke 3 times in 6 months from activitites as mundane as chewing a straw! Dr Obucina was able to fix him up. He was as comfortable with her as I am.
Another bonus: her chair has a great view of millenium park! Very nice -

I really could not speak more highly of Dr. Obucina. Good dentists are really hard to come by and to find a dentist that spends more than 5 minutes with you apart from the hygienist...just forget about it. Dr. Obucina FAR exceeded all my expectations and I highly recommend her to anyone who is sans-insurance or just looking for a new dentist. I assure you, you will NOT be disappointed.
I was new to the city and sans-insurance when I came across the Pretty City promotion offering $31 teeth cleaning. I figured I'd give it a shot since I was due for a cleaning and I really didn't want to have to fork over $150 for a cleaning elsewhere. Because it was a promotion, so I was a bit apprehensive, but that quickly faded.
Dr. Obucina runs the entire show herself, so talk about a personal experience!! You won't be seeing a dental hygienist who spent the last couple of years learning how to make conversation...and semi-clean teeth. Dr. Obucina provided one of the least uncomfortable, most thorough cleanings I have ever had. To be honest I don't think I've ever had a dentist clean my teeth; it's always been a hygienist! Now I never want to go back to how things used to be!
She provides great conversation and genuinely cares about you, even if you don't have insurance! I discovered this to be a fact the day that my lower retainer came loose. I have one of those permanent metal bars that get cemented to the back of your teeth after you get braces off, so I guess after having this thing on for over 10 years, it had to give eventually. I was worried because it was pretty sharp and kept poking me in the mouth, but I was didn't have insurance still so I was afraid I would have to pay an arm and a leg to get it done. Not the case at all.
When I contacted her about coming in it was Labor Day Weekend so normally one would think that you would have to wait a few extra days to get in due to the holiday. Not so with Dr. Obucina! I sent her an email through her website and she responded probably within 30 minutes (seriously for a Dr. that runs every facet of the office, she is the most prompt Dr. I have ever met) to say that she could fit me in ASAP. And when I say ASAP I don't mean in a few days...she offered to come in on a Saturday, that's right, the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, and also offered to come in on LABOR DAY or the following regular work day earlier than when the office normally opens so she could take me before her first appointment. How insane is that?!!
I didn't want to steal her away from her holiday so I opted to come in on the regular business day. Not only did she cement the bar back on, but she also gave me a free teeth cleaning with it since she had to charge me for the cementing. AND because of another promotion she was doing for people who were getting a cleaning, she also gave me an electronic toothbrush for free!
So let's sum it up: I had an issue, it was taken care of IMMEDIATELY, I got two things for the price of one, and a free electric toothbrush!! Wanna know how much it cost??? $150!!!!!!! That's it!!
Seriously Dr. Obucina is god-sent. She deserves an award or something. I will most definitely be keeping her! -

Very satisfied with thorough cleaning from Dr. Obucina and excellent service. Receptionist was personable and professional.
Went in on account of molly f. and bridget s.' reviews (thanks!) and a PrettyCity June promo. had been searching for dental referrals with limited success, since leaving former dentist to seek more attentive care. My experience confirmed prior reviewers - Dr. Obucina does not attempt to push unnecessary/cosmetic procedures and offers flexible payment (didn't require due to cavity-free - but she was offering a 20% discount for uninsured).
Accessible location across from Macy's on State St.
Will recommend to friends/acquaintances. -

The only reason I am giving the overall experience 2 stars is:
- the staff is very nice and friendly, as is the dentist
- looks clean and professional
- overall good in and out experience
The reason why it is not a 5, and I feel like it could have very easily been a 5:
- not sure if that fact that I had a Groupon made the dental cleaning not even worth $1, the hygienist is very nice, however she did not do anything to my teeth. She said I am going a great job and that's it.
- waste of my time, the dentist came, evaluated my teeth, said everything is fine and tried to sell me another service, that was on a special that very day! I politely said I will think about it in the future.
Very dissatisfied with the Groupon treatment as everyone else here (yelp) has had a good experience. I would much rather pay full price and get the job done.
Dear Dr. Obucina, do not differentiate your customers based on the price they have paid (you chose to participate on a deal-website). Instead of attracting a new patient, you are losing him and potentially new patients as well. -

Haven't been to the dentists in 3 years since loosing my insurance!!
So I was a little nervous but excited to get them cleaned.
I used the October Pretty City special $31 for cleaning and then I decided to pay the extra $31 to get the Xrays since it had been so long.
62 dollars is a great deal!
When i first walked into the waiting room i was surprised by how small the place is but the view from my room was amazing.
My hygienist was very sweet and took me right away and did a great job!
Dr. Obucina was out of town so i didn't get to meet her, different dentists was her replacement. Tho this didn't bother me she was nice. -

I'm bumping up my rating.
Due to my work schedule, I was not able to set up an appointment (for the remainder of my dental work) during her standard hours. Without hesitation, she said that she would be willing to stay after hours to complete the work.
Her actions in addition to her other qualities have gained my respect. I'll be one of her patients for as long as I am in the windy city.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Well, I'm lucky to have dental insurance now, and Dr. Obucina is still as awesome as ever.
She doesn't try to sell you on any unnecessary products or procedures, and really offers good conversation (y'know, for as good as you can converse while getting your teeth cleaned)!
The girl working the desk is so friendly, too.

I went to get my teeth whitened today and it definitely wasn't worth one penny. She does have a special for $99.99 but I was very disappointed, I didn't see a difference at all!!
The PolaPaint is the worst. Beware Besafe and choose another whitening solution. My teeth aren't that discolored but that's more of a reason it should have worked. The jell was applied on my teeth 3-4 different times and it took about 45mins of wasted time. -

I went to Dr. Obucina yesterday to have two of my three cavities filled. One of the two was pretty bad, but the whole appointment only took an hour. She was as pleasant as ever and did an excellent job. Throughout the procedure she let me know what was going on and answered all my questions. I do not have dental insurance and the procedure cost me $280: $125 for the small cavity and $155 for the major one. Both were the traditional metal fillings, but she does offer tooth colored fillings as well. I will definitely continue to choose Dr. Obucina as my dentist. The experience went so well, in fact, that this time I won't wait 7 years before going back!

I visited Dr Lillian Obucina last week for the $31 routine cleaning via the PrettyCity special. Not only is her office extemely convenient regarding location (right off a busy el station) she is very friendly, caring, funny and truly helpful. She gave me one of the best cleanings I've had, and I would absolutely recommend her to friends. In fact, I already have. She also has a great in house whitening special I'm going to look into. I went to see Dr. Obucina today for a cleaning. She is running a special through Pretty City (Pretty in Pink), through October, and I paid $31 for a cleaning that was better and more thorough than other times where I have paid much more. She did all of the work herself, which I appreciated. I will definitely go back again for my next cleaning.

Dr. Obucina is one of the most professional, friendly, & accommodating people I've ever met. She's not covered under my new insurance policy, but after visiting other dentists, (who try to milk you for all of your cash), I've come to realize an honest dentist is hard to come by nowadays. Dr. O is just that...honest! She's thorough in her examinations, flexible with her schedule, and respectful of your time (meaning you're not waiting an hour for your appointment). I guess what I'm trying to say is...she's the best :)

Dr. Obucina has been my dentist since I bought the Groupon that everyone has been talking about, last year. She's really great, and has always been accomodating to match my schedule. Her office is cozy and conveniently located right off the el (or a very reasonable valet rate), and her receptionist is very polite and nice to talk if you need to wait a few minutes. She's pretty darned good at helping with crossword puzzles while you wait too, even though she says she isn't :)
I had my 4th visit to Dr. Obucina today, and had a routine cleaning. She was very gentle with me (I not only have a dentist anxiety, but very sensitive teeth), and we had nice conversation while she was doing her work in my mouth (I mostly listened, obviously).
I found out that her "assistant" Judy is no longer with her practice, and though I'm sure everyone is sad to see her gone, the truth is that there is no replacement for the emaculate work that Dr. Obucina does.
I'm so happy to have found her, and I have no doubt that she will be my dentisit for years to come.
For those of us who lack dental insurance, Dr. Obucina always has a 20% discount. She also runs a ton of specials throughout the year such as 50% off night mouth guards and $99 whitening.
Today's visit cost me $100 for a thorough cleaning and polishing, and she even sent me home with a nice little gift bag! -

Dr. Obucina is wonderful!! I have had a couple bad experiences with other dentists so I was extremely skeptical when i went in for my first appt with her. She has to be the sweetest and most upbeat person Ive ever met. I used a coupon from http://chicagobeauty.com to get a discount on veneers from her. I have no dental insurance so I was really worried about the cost. She charges peanuts compared to what I paid my old rude dentists. She is fantastic..I keep getting compliments on my teeth. Not only is she a wonderful dentist but a wonderful person as well. So kind. I noticed a negative review about her being hard to schedule...so weird because she practically bent over backwards to accommodate my crazy schedule. I would give her 10 stars if I could. :)

I moved here 3 years ago. I tried some recommended dentists and I was unhappy. No customer service, and crappy cleanings. Someone also recommended Dr. Obucina, but it wasn't until I saw her on Groupon that I gave her a shot.
Just for the record, I brush twice a day with a Sonicare and floss at night. I haven't had a cavity since I was 12, and I usually get compliments from the dentist for taking such good care of my teeth.
I was taken to a small room by a dental hygienist. She was nosy, a damn know-it-all, and occasionally downright rude. I would have told her to just shut it and clean my teeth, but she's the one holding the sharp metal instruments, not me, ok? At one point she told me I needed to start thinking about braces. Never in my life, EVER, have I been told I need braces. People even ask me if I had braces growing up! Are my teeth perfect? No, but $4000 for slightly straighter teeth? Bogus. She started flossing and I was ready to leave. She was trying to fit both hands in my mouth. Ridiculous! I was gagging, so she finished quick. Then came the water pick. I've had this done before. I only realized when I got home why it hurt so much. It looked like she tattooed my gums! Swirls and lines nowhere near where the tooth and gum meet!
For the next 4 days, my gums hurt, I had two canker sores, and little ulcers between my teeth from the overly aggressive hygienist.
Dr. Obucina came in for about 2 minutes at the end, glanced at my teeth, said they looked good, and then left and got my coat. I think participating in the Groupon offer caused her quality of service to suffer. I was really expecting more. I wouldn't go back ever. -

I had to write another review based on the recent 2 star rating that was done by another yelper. I've been going to Dr. O for almost 2 years now. She's the best dentist I've had ever. I just completed my invisalign process after a year with her and it was easy and inexpensive. She's gentle, thorough, informative, and caring. She always tries to fit you in her schedule if you're having a problem. She's fantastic and I hope the 2-star yelper gives her one more chance! She's worth it!

Very professional and budget conscious. She is truely a wonderful and caring dentist my husband and I went there using a Groupon and had a wonderful cleaning! We felt very comfortable in her office and the very nice girl in the front office is very sweet! My husband had some tooth issues and Dr. Obucina was wonderful in making him feel comfortable and repaired the issue wonderfully. We have found a good dentist...... FINALLY!

Had my first cleaning and X-Ray session a week ago with Dr. Obucina thanks to a great introductory offer she ran through Groupon. So glad it came along, otherwise I may not have discovered her.
Dr. Obucina is very friendly and welcoming, and has a great sense of humor. At a few points, it was hard to keep my mouth open for the cleaning as I fought back laughter. (I unquestionably considered this a good thing, even if it made my cleaning take a bit longer). I even managed to spend some time before and after my appointment chatting with Dr. O and her receptionist, which went a long way in not making me feel like I was being rushed through an assembly line, like many other dentists I have been to.
It is so important to have a dentist you feel comfortable with, and Dr. O did an excellent job at creating that environment. I'm sure anyone who may have any anxiety or discomfort about visiting the dentist (not me...I loved it, even as a kid!) will feel more at ease here.
The office is clean, modern and tech-ed out a bit, which, admittedly, won me over.
It really is a plus that this is a dentist that handles the work herself, unlike other dentists that come in for a few seconds, give a few disinterested nods in my general direction, and leave a green hygienist to do the dirty work.
I have already scheduled my next cleaning, and will be recommending Dr. O enthusiastically to my friends and family. -

I love Dr. Obucina. She is great. I went to her for a teeth whitening special and ended up finding my new dentist. She is patient, explains the procedures, is flexible with insurance and does a great job with my teeth. She is experienced and knowledgable in her field. I highly recommend her if you are looking for a new dentist. She is always advertising specials. Her last special was with pretty city in oct. for breast cancer awareness. She had a deal for X-rays and cleaning for like $60, which was awesome. She also works with your schedule and gives you personal time that many dentists dont offer.

I have been spending most of my time in Chicago but still ended up going back to San Francisco for my dental appointments. I was hesitent on visiting Dr. Obucina after getting a special on groupon.
Dr. Obucina is a fantastic dentist that truly pays attention to her patients. She is very personable and is extremely thorough with her work.
Office Staff: My appointment was right on time. Her staff was very friendly and courteous.
Technology: Loved the digital xrays. Unlike many dentists in the past where you have to sit or stand in a cubby hole to take xrays, mine were done right in my dental chair. Dr. Obicina's office has a digital x-ray system that allows for her to capture images of your teeth directly into her computer.
Cleaning: I don't remember the name of her dental hygenist but she was very good. To my surprise, my cleanining did not leave hurt at all. I do have to say that the high pitched noise of her ultrasonic cleaning mechnism was painful to bear but well worth it to have clean teeth and no sore gums.
If you're looking for a new dentist, I'd definitely recommend Dr. Obucina. -

I hate to be the only one giving this place 4 stars when everyone gives them 5. But no, the 4-star review is not particularly because of Dr. Lillian. Rather, I deduct a star for her hygenist that put me in such physical pain. Her name was Judy, and don't ask me how I know. I expected pain--the usual kind that happens when you go to the dentist's office, and normally I'm not a girl about it. She was really rough--one of those who loves to dig which I seriously have no problem with. What really got to me was that she chooses to be oblivious to her patients' pain endurance and sensitivty. Typically, I'd think that if you see your patient unfortable with what you're doing, you'd probably stop and ask if it's too much or if they should stop or slow it down. NOT THIS ONE. She kept on going and blamed it on scheduling my appointment around my menstrual cycle explaining that the sensitivity has to do with that which I don't doubt it. Still, doesn't give her the right to ignore my pain in the chair. I really didn't like her. Dr. Lillian on the other hand was very kind and gentle. The view of the office is great--overlooks Navy Pier and Lake Michigan. She was apologetic for running a little bit late for my appointment. Didn't try to push unnecessary services that I didn't need which I appreciate. I have an appointment to go back to fill my cavaties. I just hope I don't see that witch hygenist lady again.

Dr. Obucina (or Dr. O as we affectionately refer to you in our home), thank you. There is no good place to start, as you deserve the highest marks in every category. I found Dr. O two years ago when I was broke and uninsured. At the time, she was offering cleanings for next-to-nothing through Pretty City and sent me home with a goody bag to boot. Who does that? And since gaining employment and insurance, I have never considered going elsewhere. When my insurance changed and Dr. O was no longer in my network, she adjusted the price to keep my husband and I as patients (and we would have stuck with her regardless). Thank you, Dr. O, for your kindness, cleanings, fillings, and whitenings over the last few years.

As far as dentists go, there is none better than Dr. Obucina! I have been cursed with numerous dental issues and have seen many different dentists and can whole-heartedly say that Dr. Obucina is caring, gentle, and thorough with her dental procedures! She takes the extra time to make sure I am comfortable and to make sure that everything feels and looks perfect. I will never go to another dentist and feel compelled to recommend her to everyone!

worst dental experience ever!!! I get my teeth cleaned every 4-6 months. Ive had the same dentist for 10 years who is wonderful but expensive. so when I saw a groupon I bought it thinking i could save some money. BIG mistake. The prision guard looking hygenist was terrible she was obviously rushing she cut and tore atrociously at my gums. Her personality was also abrasive. I had to tell her numerous times to stop hurting me. Also she didnt take xrays even though it was in the package of the groupon. Said I could get that done on my next appointment. However I would rather pull all my teeth than ever go there again. Saw Dr Obucina for two minutes of the whole appointment. Basically it was a rip off. If I could I would also give negitive stars.

Went here for a routine exam (hadn't been to the dentist in an embarrassingly long time). So often it feels like dentists nitpick and find minor cavities or other problems so they can sell additional services. Since the Groupon was such a great deal, I was prepared for a hard sell. I was pleasantly surprised that Dr. Obucina thoroughly examined me, cleaned my teeth and sent me on my way! Very pleasant bedside manner, all-around great experience!
