Review from Kristen K.
Honolulu, HI
Grew up around here....and then I moved out.....down the street. So yes, I am still very close to Liliha bakery, and yes, I still love this place to death.
Its just comforting to see it when I drive by. Always open....(exception that they are closed on Mondays)....and there's always people standing in line with their numbered tickets or cops mingling with the older people at the counter on the old barstools at the wee hours of the morning. Its just a landmark and I hope this place never, ever closes or it would break my heart.
Of course they are famous for their coco puffs (I like the green tea one!)....their chantilly cake is good too. They will write a custom message on your cake, for a few dollars more. And they give candles. =)
The bakery cases are filled with every baked good you could ever imagine....and it's hard to limit yourself sometimes! Anpan, apple-filled malasadas, cupcakes, cookies, long johns, cream puffs, jello squares, hot crossed buns, chocolate covered doughnuts, glazed twisty doughnuts, bread pudding, cinnamon sticks, assorted danishes, hot dog rolls....the list goes on and on. Their fresh-baked sweetbread is amazing, and I always pick up their flavored chiffon cakes to bring to parties and potlucks with a dozen coco puffs.
Their food is just regular diner fare, but it just tastes better because it is made with love. The little aunties are so sweet (even if you roll up at 3 or 4 AM) and are always bustling around flipping pancakes and eggs on the griddles and refilling coffee and distributing butter rolls with that fluorescent jelly.
What can I say.....I just adore this place. -

Love love love their pancakes!
I don't know what their secret is, but their pancakes are just the best in town. Light, fluffy, buttery goodness. What's even better is that you can order just one pancake, and couple it with something else on the menu.
I've also had lunch here and their burgers ono. But I'm bummed that they don't have fries on the menu.
And of course, you can't leave here without picking up something from the bakery! -

In this day and age you can't buy much for buck. But here at Liliha's, you can buy PURE JOY with just spare change. Oh yes, I'm talking about the incredible Coco puffs. They definitely live up to the hype! And I love that they're open round the clock and they still maintain a fully stocked bakery, even at 10pm!
We got coco puffs, regular cream puffs, and butter rolls. Cream puffs were okay, but the butter rolls were melt in your mouth delicious. So light and fluffy, so sinfully buttery...my mouth is watering just thinking about them! mmm...
But as good as their butter rolls are, they don't hold a candle to the Coco Puffs. Their name is reminiscent of crunchy cocoa flavored cereal with a prize at the bottom of the box, but these are no mass produced overly sugary claim to be healthy food item. No no no, these make no claims about health benefits. You know as soon as you bite into one of these that you may just have to go to confessional later.
I cannot describe the incredible delicious combination of the salty buttery almost toffee like topping and the sweet creamy filling that overflows out of the puff pastry. oh so so good.
After writing this review, I need to go back and get some. mmm -

Great pastries at this bakery. They also sell food but I've only tried the desserts. Awesome dessert selection. Their donuts are the best I've had. They are famous for their coca puffs but I prefer the ice cream puffs instead.
It can get really crowded so make sure to pull a number when you walk in to get served. The parking lot is pretty big and they are open 24 hours! -

Chantilly Cake and Cream Puffs are uberrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr yummy! No words can really explain the icing/cream on these two heavenly sent desserts! They look very plain but don't be deceived cause they are "knock you out" good! My husband had to hand-carry 5 ( yes 5) Chantilly cakes all the way to Texas and he definitely was not happy about that haha. ONO KINE GRINDZ... most definitely!

Best buttery, golden pancakes ever! Worth waiting in line for a seat at the diner table, just wish they would expand that section for easier customer access.... :P
Liliha Bakery is a treat! Chantilly coco puffs is another of my Favs! -

The three waitresses arguing amongst themselves was hilarious, until one of them turned their bad mood on the customers. She refused to give me milk for my coffee unless I bought an entire carton..... WTF. RIDICULOUS. I just left without ordering. Food might be good, staff attitude and conduct is terrible.

So I wonder how many people could literally say, "Oh-Em-Gee the first time I ever tried Liliha Bakery, it was late and we were looking for a place to eat after drinking all night and...." I want to say that this is how my friend and I found Liliha in the first place. Nevermind we lived literally 3-4 blocks away and never ventured there until that one faithful night...
First off, Coco Puff's. YUMMO! I like them either way: with powder sugar or with the chantilly cream. Just depends on how much of a sweet tooth I have. But they have SO much other stuff to choose from...and my personal favorite from here is the LILIKOI MALASADES! Sooooo good I cannot even describe. You just have to try them!
Have never had anything bad from here, ever. A must if you are the area.. -

Long lines here. Wasn't a real fan of the coco puffs or the other cream puffs. I guess I'm comparing them to Beard Papa's which is good but pretty expensive. I think I'd rather eat the frozen cream puffs at Costco.

I've been coming to Liliha Bakery since I was a child. There are two things to Liliha Bakery. One being some of the finest deserts one could find all in one place. Although through the years the cream puffs and coco puffs have shrunk quite a bit while the prices have risen the taste is still great. With the new ownership change, the bakery has offered quite a bit of new patries to the menu. The other thing Liliha Bakery offers is great dining. Meals are pretty reasonable and very tasty. I always enjoy sitting at the counter and having a meal. Watching the ladies all helping each other prepare the dishes to be served is always great entertainment. Since I've been coming so long, I recognize all the workers as they do me. Some of my favorite meals inside..denver omelot, mahimahi plate and beef curry. All accompanied with a delicious butter roll with the nuclear jelly!
This is a must eat place to get that now rare old time feeling in Honolulu. -

need a very late night snack...than this is the place to be. the only bad thing is that the only table for eating is at the counter top which probably sits around 15-20 patrons and if its busy then you would have to wait. really inexpensive breakfast lunch and dinners.
oh yeah did i mention co-co puffs!! -
Review from Yuko A.
The first time I came to Liliha was after a night of drinking and honestly, I didn't think they were anything special...Now before you judge me....keep reading..
My cousin was in town and we had rented a car so I suggested we check it out sober. She's from Japan and surprisingly, its not in the guide books so she had never even heard of it...(hopefully it stays that way because the place was packed as is)
We ordered 3 cocoa puffs, 1 chocolate puff, an apple malasadas and 2 butter rolls. We ate our cocoa puffs in the car ride home and thank god we had a dinner to go to because we would have ate all four...Damn, are they good. I mean 4.5 stars out of 600+ ratings? What else do I need to say.
The apple malasadas wasn't bad even though it was cold. I don't really like filled malasadas so I'm not sure I would get it again but for a cold doughnut it was definitely done right. We actually didn't have a chance to eat the butter rolls till 2 days later and when I took them out of the bag they were rock hard...if that's any indication about how much butter's in it. But who cares, everyone knows butters the best! :-) I warmed those babies up and they were good to go. I put a little bit of lilikoi jam on and they literally melted in my mouth.
Its a good thing I don't have a car because I'd be hitting up Liliha a little too often. We actually went twice that day...

Too much time had passed since my last visit to the hallowed grill and counter at Liliha Bakery. It was a cool evening, I was tired after a long day and night of work, and ready for some comfort food without driving too far late night.
Talk about hitting the spot. I opted for the grilled mahi/hamburger steak special once again. No place on Earth can offer up either in the late-night hours as well as this. Then again, if I had this every day, there's no way I could lose weight without running a marathon daily.
Posting photos in a minute. Nothing says it better than photos of that mountain of butter and that massive pot of gravy. -

2 words: coco puffs.

Okay but really... when you think of Liliha Bakery... seriously... coco puffs is what comes to mind. "Regular coco puffs"... or the infamous "chantilly coco puffs"... and the newly "green tea coco puffs".
I came here to pick up a couple dozen coco puffs for the staff at work. Nurses are horrible eaters... we eat when we can, and when we can, it's greasy, oily, buttery, sugary foods... so I thought pastries would be perfect to bring for my co workers lol!
We were having a going away party for a great Nurse Practitioner at work so my "potluck" item was dessert. I got 2 dozen "chantilly coco puffs" and knew that would be a favorite at the potluck. I haven't met anyone who hasn't liked chantilly coco puffs from Liliha Bakery. And if you don't like them... what the heck is wrong with you and what planet are you from?!?!
Besides coco puffs, they have an array of other items: ensemadas, turnovers, doughnuts, cakes, butter horns, cup cakes, and a bunch of other items.
They are also a 24 hour diner (except on Mondays) and they have big portions and big taste! Prices are reasonable and service is fast and friendly. -

Summary: Great hawaiian food. Come here for breakfast, lunch, dinner, munchies, birthday cakes, whatever.
Pros: Open 24 hrs
Cons: small place... maybe 12 seats at the counter and that's it
Food Tried: Loco Moco, Rolls w/ jelly, Coco Puffs, Mahi
Everything was pretty good and it's fun watching them prepare your food right in front of you.
Service: Great
Parking: Parking lot. Not bad -

Late night grindz. Yummers!
Butter rolls - fantastic.
Sweet bread French Toast - amazing.
Omelets - larger than life.
Cream puffs - addictive.
Chiffon frosting - makes your eyes roll back, it's that good.
I love coming here for a regular meal during dining hours and also late night after a few too many drinks. Food is consistent and DELICIOUS!
Everyone is real friendly when eating at the bar here. It's teeny tiny. If you need to ask a few people to scoot down so you and a friend(s) can fit, no one will mind. Don't be shy! We all do it for one another. -
Review from Grace B.
We came here kinda late. I asked my friend to take me somewhere to eat. We came here and it was already packed. The dining area was packed with people and no seats. So I decided to buy their COCO PUFFS.
As a kid, Liliha Bakery, was only known to me for buying cakes. I never tried buying any of the other goodies they had. But I finally tried their Coco Puffs. Delicious. The cream on the top outside of the puff has this slight butterscotch flavoring and inside the pastry puff was chocolate pudding. It was so delicious. It's not too sweet. It was just right.
I definitely recommend that you try the COCO PUFFS! ONO delicious! -

I admit I was skeptical of the greatness of this place from reading all of the reviews. How can these Cocoa Puffs be that great? They are eclair-like pastries filled with chocolate pudding topped with a dollop of heaven. Not too big, not too small, just enough to leave you happy and wishing you could go back for more.
Since my birthday was on Super Bowl Sunday, we were going to a friend's house to watch the game. I decided this would be a good chance to get a cake since there would be other people to eat it. After much deliberation, we decided to get the Dream Cake here. This cake is filled with a cream, much like whipped cream, but not as sweet with 3 layers of chocolate cake with chocolate shavings on the outside. After cutting it and putting a piece on a plate I started to doubt my choice, but it was not nearly as sweet as it appears. It's light, it's fluffy and tasty. My husband isn't usually a fan of cakes, but he really enjoyed this one.
We have yet to experience a "bad" pastry from this bakery. On the rare occasions we make it over here, it is definitely a treat. -

Liliha Bakery's Cocoa Puffs are living legends! Seriously!
When I used to live just up the hill from this place, we'd go there all the time just to get those addicting pastries. The flaky, crispy outside with it's sweet and creamy filling is like crack.
Lately I've been loving the Green Tea Puff. If it were a woman, I'd marry it!
Also great breakfast here, and it's open 24 hours. Can't go wrong!

Great breakfasts.
Here you really can "have your cake and eat it, too" I love eggs for breakfast, I love to coco puffs. How to pick? The obvious answer: have both. Loco moco at the diner counter, coco puffs to go to eat, well hours later since the loco moco is ...substantial to say the least. -
Review from Ticha B.
I wish Liliha had more seating for dining in. I really wanted to try their breakfast. Unfortuately we were 2nd in line for 3 seats and it looked like it would be a while longer. We just picked up some Coco Puffs and left.
Plenty of parking, fast bakery service and pretty yummy Coco Puffs. Long wait for breakfast and not enough counter seating was a bit disappointing. It was highly recommended, so we had dessert before breakfast and left to find breakfast elsewhere.
A locals joint, will have to try their breakfast if I get back to HNL in the future. -
Review from Kelly H.
This review is solely for the COCO PUFFS. OMGOSH, I DIE. After failing to go to this place for years, I finally decided to drive to Liliha to get me some coco puffs, and boy was my tummy happy I did! They are perfectly filled with coco creme in the inside and some kinda of sweet creme on the top, nom nom nom!! Also, the bread that incased the creme was soft and easy to bite into. I've never had a coco puff before but I have had a cream puff before and I gotta tell you this is nothing like a cream puff. It is like a creme puff ON CRACK!!!!
When I went the parking wasn't too bad (they have a small lot) and I was in and out of there really fast. I also heard rave reviews about their savory food items as well, so I will have to go back there and try their food...further reviews to come. =) -

This is seriously the best little diner on the island! Love coming here for breakfast ( at any time of the day!). The butter rolls are amazing, especially with the pink jelly. I tend to always get the sweet bread french toast but everything else on the menu looks just as good! If you ever find yourself in liliha and are hungry, Liliha Bakery is a must!

Had to try the coco puffs and ended up buying and sampling more that I needed to.
The coco puffs definitely lived up to their reputation....and do actually weigh 5 pounds each! Kinda messy, so be sure to grab some napkins.
Also got the apple filled malasada, also messy but totally delicious and worth it!
Bought the guava angel food cake, macadamia nut biscuit, Portuguese sweet bread and a cookie to take home, all fantastic. The guava angle food cake was so light and fluffy, it was like eating guava air or a guava cloud.....biscuits yummy and the sweet bread mmmmm, mmm.
On my next trip gonna try the hot cross buns......a childhood favorite that my Portuguese grandmother used to make!
If you're a sweets person.....Liliha is the place for you! -

I had to just write something. Everyone has said it all. But like Beyonce, all I really want to be able to say is that "I was here."
Got two cream puffs--the coco puff and the chocolate cream puff. Both weighed about five pounds. When I raved about these indulgent delights to people they said, "Ohh cream puffs? Ew, I don't really like those." I replied, "Neither do I. But these are not of this world. It's like they're not even in the same realm as regular cream puffs. You'd become a believer too."
If only I could freeze them and ship them over to my loved ones. Man. The little gems of magical confections that mainlanders will never get to have...I weep for those without Liliha. -

Another famous bakery in Honolulu...
What they're known for:
- COCO PUFFS
- It's similar to Beard Papas cream puffs
- $12 bucks for a dozen
- They always have a dozen packed already in the refrigerator
The coco puffs were good but it was not something to die for. I esp like the inside cream because it was not too sweet but it was sure a mess to eat. Like another yelper have mentioned, that we do have a lot of bakeries in Southern California. This location is not too far from Chinatown either. They sure do have a lot of other goodies but I didn't get get anything else! -

I love love love Liliha Bakery. I've been going there since I was a child and it's still greatness!
Of course when you come here you have got to try their cocoa puffs. I may be biased but I really don't think you can get any better than this. Now for those of you that aren't one that likes cocoa puffs, they do have other things that are just as great!! Personally I always have to get their chocolate eclair and their chocolate cream puff. They are both filled with their ever popular custard filling and topped with chocolate. They have malasadas that are different flavors, danishes, doughnuts and chantilly cake! I love their dobash cake. About 14 of 21 birthdays that I've had, I've always gotten a dobash cake from liliha and ONLY from liliha. Now doesn't that say something? HAHAHA!
Service: It can get pretty crowded so they have a number system, where you pull a ticket and wait for your number to get called. DO NOT FORGET TO PULL A NUMBER, of course only when there's a huge crowd but I cannot stress that enough. Many a time, people are just standing there waiting to get served but no one bothers telling them they need to pull a number. Poor things. But if there are just a few people, it doesn't hurt to pull a number anyway just in case. Like I always say, better to have it than not need it rather than need it and not have it.
They have a diner section where you can eat on the bar but rarely do I see it unoccupied. They don't really have a host to sit you nor do they have a list to sign up so you just have to stand there and create your own line until someone gets up. I've only eaten there once and it was alright. It could have been because it was crowded because the service was kind of slow and the waitresses were too busy tending to their regulars. Their pancakes are alright, but I love to buy their frozen waffles that they sell in their freezer, its so yummy in my tummy.
Prices are decent, I mean its about $1-2 for a pastry but they also have cakes for a different charge. They also make chantilly cakes with a cocoa puff border and sheet cakes with an image that you can bring in.
Try it out!! They are so bomb! -
Review from Angelo F.
Came here as a recommendation from a server we had at another place. Great assortment of desserts! So we order our recommended Loco Moco's and while we wait, mwe ended up ordering a grip of desserts to take back to our room. First thing Imhad to try was the coco puffs...... My goodness did I screw up my order! I shouldve ordered a dozen of these bad boys! I also ordered an assortment of their malasadas but their coco puffs takes the cake!
Now onto the loco moco! I think it was above average. The most distinguishable thing about their loco moco is the smoked/grill taste it has. I really like that! Otherwise, the gravy was good and the egg was just a tad overcooked since I like my yolk on the wet side. -

Ok, a large part of me wants to say, "WHY THE @*%# would you eat anywhere else ever again?"
For $3 you can get some tasty tasty saimin; chewy noodles and a simple yummy broth. Then you toss in some green onions and a bunch of slices of SPAM (like 10 slices!), and I'm one happy girl. Add 2 large teriyaki chicken skewers to the mix for $2.50, and I'm in love.
I don't think you can step into liliha bakery without leaving with a pastry, or devouring one before your check comes, and thats understandable. For less that $5 you can get 2 pastries. i just about died when i saw the BLUEBERRY CREAM CHEESE SQUARES next to the equally amazing jello cream cheese squares the other day. Then i turn my head and find a SWEET POTATO CRESCENT staring into my soul. Yea, go ahead, pull that number and get yourself a pastry, or five. i know i did. #bestdecision
you really can't go wrong here, unless you come on MONDAYS because its CLOSED. open super late--classic local foods and favorites. clean, small, and the staff there is so nice and sweet. its homey, tasty, and cheap.
your stomach & wallet will be very happy. -

Blueberry Pancakes are the best I have ever had.
Loco Moco was disappointing. It didn't taste very flavorful. I had to request an extra side of gravy to make up for the lack of flavor.
Portuguese Sausages were very flavorful and I was happy to get some meat with flavor!
The creme puffs...the coco puff is truly amazing. I ordered 2 green tea puffs as well but I was given 2 originals. I didn't find out until we were 20 minutes away. Since they messed up my order I'm pretty upset. Especially since the regular puff is not good which is why I didn't order it.
5 stars for the blueberry pancakes, 3 for the loco Moco, 4 for the sausage and 1 for the puffs gives you my 3 star rating. -

No more reviews are necessary since this place is an institution...but just in case you're not convinced to drop everything and go...Imagine a hometown bakery and diner, that truly serves fresh, delicious baked goods and foods all day long, 24/7!
My husband and I came to Liliha on a food tour initially, for the coco puffs (which they sell, what I think 5k-7k a day) which are basically cream puffs filled with this chocolate custard and topped with a buttery, sugary swirl (sorry, forgot the technical name for it, I was in a food coma when that part was explained to me) on top. These were just the beginning.
Everything we ordered in the case was de-lish. (...and to be honest, surprising for 2 in the morning!) The malasadas are light and airy with just enough filling. The sponge cakes are spongy and not too sweet. (The frosting isn't too sweet either, but I can tell is probably not the most healthy!) The danishes were fresh and full of fruit.
TIP: If you're a superfan of the coco puffs this place features a huge freezer case up front with frozen ones you can take home or even ship! (They're not super crisp like Beard Papa's cream puffs so they won't get soggs, cos they kinda already are soft.)
Can't wait to try the FOOD!
PS: Don't forget to grab a ticket if you're getting baked items from the case. I forgot to do that, and ended up waiting and waiting...then taking my ticket and waiting and waiting some more! -
Review from Leslie P.
At 8am, there was a wait to be seated at their cafe. For us, we just ordered their bakery items to go. After browsing their cases, I decided on the hot cross bun, coco puff, and green tea cream puff. These were all about $1.40 each.
I took the coco puff out of the box and it was extremely heavy! The puff was filled to the max with chocolate custard inside and topped with a dollop of thicker custard. I wasn't sure what it was. My friend said it was chantilly, but I don't think it was because chantilly is lighter and more whipped cream like. This was a little gritty and thick, almost like a paste. It resembled almond paste. The ratio of custard to the pate a choux was off. There was way too much custard and it felt like I was just eating pudding out of my hands.
