I decided to "run" this at the last minute. When I say "run", I mean "walk-fast-and-practice-my-sniping/photojournalist -skills".
I did not have a number.
I did not get a t-shirt.
I DID have a great time!
Things I saw: star wars characters, gorillas, fat people (yay fat people!), families with strollers, cops, bands (some good, some bad, all fun), little shits (read: "kids") with hoses and supersoakers, etc. I could go on and on really, this is better people watching than a mall, bar, music festival, and parade all rolled into one!
There is a possibilty of my moving away from Spokane, but I think I'll be back to experience this again. Perhaps I'll even do it "officially" next time.
I'm a proud Bloomie!
Growing up in Spokane, I was always around for the annual Bloomsday run. It's a major event for the area, drawing global runners, supporters, etc. On the first weekend of May, Spokane becomes international!
I first ran Bloomsday when I was 12. In those days, there was free Gatorade at the refueling stations. That continued for several years, but now it's just water. Did someone skimp on the funding? Are there less sponsors nowadays? Bring back the Gatorade (or equivalent) and I'll gladly change this rating to 5 stars!!
It's only $15 to run Bloomsday and earn your extra special T-shirt. The last one I got was bright burnt orange. Even though I don't wear my Bloomsday shirts (my mom had them made into a quilt), it doesn't take a genius to realize that bright burnt orange doesn't look good on a majority of the runners. Keep with the blues, greens, etc. please!
Bloomsday is open to everyone. Runners, walkers, wheelchairs, strollers, and Rocky Horror Picture Show members are all welcome to participate. (And yes, I've seen Frankenfurter in 6" stilettos making his way along Riverside.)
One of the great things about this race is the community support. Only once have I seen the support surpassed, and that was at the 2008 Boston Marathon. Watch for the slew of bands playing at the roadsides, neighbors spraying water hoses onto willing passers-by, the nuns just after Spokane Falls Community College, and DOOMSDAY HILL. After you crest that bastard (1/2 mile long between miles 4 and 5) wave to the vulture at the sidelines and be thankful he didn't triumph.
I injured myself at the May 2006 Bloomsday run, but I vow to take on the 12K through Spokane once again! 2009 will see me running through the streets of Spokane again.
