Elmwood Park, NJ
Great park surrounding area not so great, use the Turnpike to access this gem.
Liberty State Park is surrounded by historic waterways and wonderful sight-lines, promenade stretches for as far as the eye can see. Excellent boat launch to accommodate large and small watercraft alike. Well visited but large enough to spread folks out, clean and well patrolled.
The view of lower Manhattan is outstanding! -

Jersey City, NJ
Bike adventure!!! Life doesn't get better then when at Liberty State Park on a beautiful day. I frequent this park weekly as it is approximately 8 blocks from my house. There are both dirt and paved paths one can run, bike, or walk, with the most amazing views of the city, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. I may be biased but, I may have to say these are some of the best views of the city.
The park is big, and though in summer it does get busy it never feels that busy. Ample space for you to lay out, read, picnic, fly that kite you've been meaning to fly, play catch or my personal fave, Frisbee. You can't not smile and enjoy your time here, it is relaxing and peaceful.
The park is also adjacent to a marina filled with sail boats and yachts (you can actually take sailing lessons here). So, after your fill of a gorgeous park, you can walk along the boardwalk and check out some sick boats and dream about the day when boat owning will be a reality.
Liberty State Park is a Jersey gem. If you live in Jersey, come visit. If you live in NYC, come visit. If you are a tourist, come to Jersey City see what we are about and definitely make Liberty State Park a must see stop on your list. -

Jersey City, NJ
I live in the area and I go to this park to just be one with nature and to see the fabulous NYC skyline and Statue of Liberty which is a stone's throw away.
The grounds are well kept, except in the winter when goose droppings are practically on every square inch of the lawns.
You can spread your picnic blanket on any lawn area you please whether it be to tan, picnic, or just bask. There are brick pathways for you to stroll and see the hudson river, Jersey city downtown financial district, and NYC skyline. You can ride your bicycles on these pathways because they are very wide and accomodating.
There is a concession stand but the food is too pricey for what is served, there is an adjacent free picnic/bbq area complete with benches, tables, and grills. There is a playground in that same area for kids. To the opposite side of the park there is a marina and fine dining restaurants.
There are rangers who canvas the grounds in their vehicles, so if you have a problem, there's help. Nearby there is the Liberty Science Center, which I is a great learning experience for kids and adult alike. Imax theater shows are a must-see!
No fees to pay. Parking is free which is a thumbs up.. I highly recommend a trip to this park. -

I live close enough that I usually run or bike here at least once a week. Nothing beats that view of NYC! Beware of the goose droppings! LOL "Watch your step"

Who knew NJ was hiding this gem of a park?
Now, I would never volunteer to go to NJ, but I had good reason to be here. I had to drop someone off and so I got to drive through this park.
This park is amazing. It is right along the water and you get fantastic views of the Statue of LIberty and Ellis Island. I saw many people riding and walking their dogs. All I could think about was how glorious it would be to run through this park. It is on my list of parks to run.
They also have a restaurant on the grounds of the park and I plan to come eat soon.
Don't ever underestimate a place like NJ. It may surprise you! -

:-) Walked through this after finishing the Newport Half Marathon. Excellent views of the Hudson and NY skyline. I would frequent this place and probably run here a lot if I lived here.

Last time I was here, I was on my skateboard so I wasn't able to peep the whole park. This time, I was pimpin my trek all over the place.
This park is HUGE and the view of manahattan is sick. I smashed into a bench with my bike because I was transfixed on the nyc skyline.
The dopest thing about this spot is that you can bike all around the park, then bike to downtown JC for some beers, then bike to hoboken for some more beers.
...or you can just pack a 40oz Miller High Life in your backpack.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Cool, didn't know I could review parks!
I love this park, for the huge amount of space, the proximity to NYC, the waterfront boardwalk that stretches as far as the eye can see, the runners and bikers, the kites flying high in the sky, the dogs that walk faithfully next to their owners, the aroma of the BBQ filling up the mid summer air... -
Review from Emily P.
Huge park, well maintained jogging, biking, walking paths, and a lot of great community events to be had, savored, and repeated on an annual basis. Parking is free unless you are going to stay for over two hours, then you must pay the parking fee in the managed lot (particularly if you'll be taking the tour of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty).
The nature center is easy to find by signs and pathways. You could spend the entire day in this park and never see the whole thing, unless you are a fast runner or biker. Great views of downtown NYC, and fourth of July fireworks when they are on the Hudson River side.
Recently ran a 5K here with my sister and a friend for their Earth Day festival and was impressed by the organization and sheer numbers that turned out. Made me appreciate LSP even more than I already do.
The old train station is an unbelievable sight. Worth the trip alone to go and explore some NJ / NYC rail history.
Best tip ever: If you are in Downtown Jersey City, go to the end of Jersey Ave. past the Brownstone and the hospital. Cross the Light Rail tracks and you'll hit the shortcut into the park that takes you over the Morris Canal, and through the beginning of the marina.
The marina reminds me of growing up down the shore and makes me feel at home even in the big city, its one of my favorite exercise routes to take with my dog or on my bike. Its always quiet and its a nice long route to create a challenge, but manageable enough if you just want to have a quick park experience without the time commitment. Much better than navigating through Bergen-Lafayette on your way out and you do not need a car to enjoy this park or what it has to offer. -

When friends of mine visit New York City, I always tell them Liberty State Park is a must. It's gigantic so I suggest grabbing your bike (or renting one) so you can easily cruise up and down the promenade while taking in the gorgeous views of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. It's also a great place to bbq, throw a frisbee with friends, walk your dog or simply sit back and relax.

Wow!!!! My new favorite park. Great views of NYC, Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty and the Hudson River. Great place to ride your bike, walk, run, have a bbq, take pictures etc.
LSP also offers tours around the Statue of Liberty. Plan to spend an entire day here. -

Jersey City, NJ
One of the first things that I did this summer was bike to Liberty State Park. On a gorgeous day, it's so easy to escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown Jersey City by riding all the way down Jersey Avenue, past Jersey City Medical and across a short bridge (bypassing some stale green water, mind you) and entering the green oasis that is Liberty State Park.
You can easily spend an afternoon picnicking, lying out for a tan or flying a kite. For those of us who don't have our own backyard or patio, you can exercise your inner grill-master on a BBQ in one of the nicest outdoor spots in metro Manhattan with amazing views of the Statue of Liberty. Not to mention watching cruise ships passing down the Hudson on their way to Florida or the Caribbean as you throw a line off the pier hoping to catch a nibble. The train terminal is not to be missed - it whisks you away to a time when train travel was luxurious and the way to see the country.
The pathway along the water is one of the best bicycle paths ever. There's plenty of room and you won't be spending your time dodging strollers and joggers.
Hmmm...I think I'll go for a ride right now! -
Review from Andre P.
Could be a little better, but I won't complain, hence 5 stars. Excellent place to ride a bike seriously hard or comfortably slow. The view is one of the best around New York City and extremely close to the Statue of Liberty. The (flat) grassy area is great for activities and often there are small/medium/large scale events, such as the Red Bull Air Show or a competitive kite flying contest. And of course the best view for the 4th of July fireworks!
There is not enough shade and the park is too flat for me. A marsh or two is nice, but beyond that and some fenced off areas from it's former days as a train terminal, it's basically grass and the view.
But don't let that scare you. Kayaking and boating is easy. BBQ'ing is available in two distinct spots (get there early) and it's a great place to do all sorts of personal and group activities. For now and probably another 15 years at last, the park is too big to be crowded. -
Review from Regina W.
Urgh. Maybe it's because I'm used to spots like Golden Gate Park in San Francisco or fun places like Venice Beach, but Liberty State Park was one big yawn for me.
I'm new to the area and noticed it was close by. I decided to take a long walk instead of going to the gym to see what was there. I should have gone to the gym. I walked through whatever neighborhood it was and, yeah, I won't be walking through there at night. I passed the lightrail station and then I get excited. I knew that the park is just on the other side.
The signs suck. I think the assumption is mostly locals come here (that's probably true too.) I passed the science complex. I kept walking for awhile. I saw tons of green and that's nice but I don't see any clear signs saying "go here for Ellis Island ferry", "go here for the playground" or whatever it is they have in this park. I finally find some tiny ass sign that has a map of the park. It's standard: paths for running and walking, a pond and a lot of green open space.
Honestly, it's not a bad spot for a family outing at all. It's just sort of blah. I'll admit I didn't walk all the way in to Liberty Walk for a closer view of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. (My blood sugar crashed and I turned around near the ferry ticket booth.)
It's just there are so many other interesting park spaces in the area: Governor's Island, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park (being renovated but what is there now is pretty nice), and even tiny Pier A Park in Hoboken is more exciting than this place. It's sort of unfortunate because there is a nice view of the Statue of Liberty from this park. I'll give it a second try one day but I can't say that second try will be anytime soon. -

Apparently I am the only person who doesn't care for Liberty State Park. Well, let me give my reasons for being a killjoy.
First off, the trip from Southeast Pennsylvania to Jersey City is not difficult or even time consuming, but once we started seeing signs for Liberty State Park is where we ran into problems. The signs to help you maneuver your way around this park are absolutely terrible. It's kind of ironic that if you make a wrong turn, you wind up in the ghettos of Jersey City that literally border this park. We drove around for almost 25 minutes in said ghettos before we finally figured out where we to go.
As far as the ferry itself, that thing is really expensive. I really don't understand why it has to cost so much. The Statue of Liberty is a wonderful American landmark, but for the love of God, do not go inside so you can stand in the statue's crown. You basically stand in line for hours to spend 2 minutes in a cramped room. Also if you're claustrophobic, you might want to avoid doing this because the stairs get really narrow the higher you go.
The thing that saves Liberty State Park is Ellis Island. There is lots of great stuff there. -

I have to admit, Liberty State Park is beautiful. Great views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, this park is ginormous. The running path is scenic and the trail is pretty good. My friend says it's the most underutilized park in the city.
There are a lot of families, couples and groups of friends grilling and fishing. Overall, a great place to enjoy a sunny day. -
Review from Brian K.
Weehawken, NJ
Liberty State Park is a mostly featureless, pancake-flat stretch of grass. There really isn't much to it besides large spans of grass, many benches, picnic spots, and asphalt and brick paths criss-crossing the grass. The Liberty Science Center has been closed for renovations for a while now, so I haven't seen it yet.
The park does have incredible views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, though, and there's a marina (the Morris Canal Big Basin) where all the rich people park their yachts. In addition, you can take the ferry from here to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The park is very clean and well-maintained, and there's usually a nice breeze coming off the river. Interesting signs throughout the park inform you of local wildlife and history.
It never seems to be crowded. Central Park is sometimes so crowded that it makes me feel claustrophobic, and Liberty State Park is never like that. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail provides easy access to the park if you don't want to drive. Overall, it's a great, quiet place to kill a few hours on a nice day.Listed in: Only in Jersey

Review from Erin C.
I am probably more a fan of the bands I saw at the All Points West festival than the park, to be honest. But getting out of New York and rediscovering the horizon is probably best done here, rather than on gross stretches of highway.
Easily accessed by Light Rail with a short hike or ferry, the park is just a nice place to be. It's a bright blank canvas capable of hosting various events or simply the arbitrary picnic. -

So happy that The Husband and I decided to visit this park on a whim! It is gorgeous with lots of beautiful landscaping. Stunning views of Lady Liberty and Ellis Island. Beautiful views of the NYC skyline. Excellent place for pictures and for a nice walk/run along the trails that seems to go on forever here.
Absolutely beautiful park! -
Review from Eric H.
Did not visit the entire park, just the part with the ferry.
It has an amazing old train station that is surreal. The tracks have trees growing into the overhang which used to be part of the cover for passengers who were boarding trains. Next time I come back I will spend some time in the actual park area doing more outdoorsy things.
All in all I still recommend this place to anyone either doing a little tourist action or just looking to spend the day in the park. -

Jersey City, NJ
...went for my after-work run here this morning. 4miles, 32 minutes.
anyways... uhm... this is a pretty awesome STATE PARK. It's HUUGE! ...definitely deserves to be explored. It's sooo much more than just the place where they have APW. (I'm going again this year, btw.. even with the parks drink 'limit')
There's:
-First of all: AWESOME VIEWS! ...on my run this morning: cruise ships docked at the Bayonne Terminal, the Verrazano Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn/Manhattan/Jersey City skylines...
-Designated BIKING paths.
-RUNNING trails with plenty of paths that criss-cross the park.
-OH! ...there's different EXERCISE STATIONS along the running path with different set-ups for you to stop and do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, bench dips, and hamstring stretches... those are the ones I remember seeing.
-Piers and bridges you can FISH from...
-BOAT LAUNCH (if you HAVE a boat, feel free to invite me along!)
-Sandy "beaches" you can launch your KAYAK from.
-KID'S AREAs with slides and swings and all that stuff kids are into...
-PICNIC/BBQ areas with grills and benches...
PLUS:
-Liberty Science Center. --a science museum with lots of great exhibits for kids. LSC also has the LARGEST IMAX movie screen in the world! (right now they have StarTrek, Earth...)
-There's even a reeally nice EVENT HALL that you can rent out for weddings and stuff. ... really nice 'fancy-schmanzy' place. ...beautifully landscaped.
Plus... you can easily get there on the light-rail. -

Liberty State Park is the location for All Points West Music Festival. It's a quick ferry ride from Battery Park area to Liberty State Park, and the ride gives you great views of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. Alternatively, there's a PATH train to get there (view excluded).
The park is expansive and nice, and there's extensive pathways along the river. There's an ever better view of the Statue of Liberty as well in the park.
The minus one star comes from the clusterflux that was All Points West. We won't get into details, but the "rain or shine" tagline was apparently a misnomer.
For the most part, it's a quick an easy jaunt from the island, so if you're looking for a large patch of green that's not called Central Park, Liberty State Park isn't a bad alternative. -

This park is huge, and there are countless amounts of things you can do here. There seemed to be a lot of little kids bday party's here, along with people grilling out on the grills they have in the park. There were a few people fishing and people just hanging out all over. This is a great place to see Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty, along with the rest of the NYC area. They do have a ferry that will take you to both The statue and the Island. Way easier to park and get to then the ferry's on the New York side of things. If you want low stress and little hassle to go see these place's go to this park and take the ferry over.
Or if you want to jog, work out, BBQ, have a party, or just hang out and enjoy the trees, water and the green grass. -

Sunnyvale, CA
Huge, spacious park with many pathways for biking and running. It doesn't get crowded. You can freely bike and put in your daily cardio run without any disturbances. Since you're right by the water, there is a nice breeze that comes in occasionally. Sunset is gorgeous here.
Take in the views of Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty all at the same time. This park is relatively new with many new trees planted. Therefore, there is limited shaded areas. It's basically a huge vast space of greenery along with a fantastic huge playground area with at least 20 different slides (yes, I've tried counting them once) for the kiddies to play on while parents take in the breathtaking views of Manhattan.
Liberty State Park is perfectly paved for bikers and runners. Lights are on at night for security purposes. Some tourists actually park their cars in the park for free (rather than paying at the lot) and walk over to the Statue of Liberty tour check-in. It's about a 10 minutes scenic walk. -

This park is huge with plentiful 2hour free parking available. Great place for the family and pets. Awesome view of NYC and you can see lady liberty hence the name Liberty State Park. Nice place to have a picnic, a stroll, and/ or a bike ride. You can also take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty from here so well worth-it park for tourists as well.

Review from Matt E.
4.5 stars...
Manhattan has Central Park, Brooklyn has Prospect Park, Queens has Flushing Meadows, and the NE Coastal Towns of NJ (Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City, Bayonne) has Liberty State Park. Although it's not as elaborate, historic, or well known as the others, the park is beautiful and massive. The public part of the park is about 1.5 miles x .5 mile (the non public wooded former landfill area takes up more than twice that space). Keep in mind that if you're going to get off the Lightrail near the Liberty Science Center at the edge of the park, it's actually going to be a 2.5mile walk to the end of the park closest to the Statue of Liberty. The State of Liberty (which faces away from NJ) is actually only about 750 yards off the parks long boardwalk (the closest you can get to the statue without being on a boat or paying to take a ferry to the island). Ellis Island is only about 420 yards from the park and even has a bridge going over to it (unfortunately it's not open to the public whatsoever, something I completely disagree with). The park also houses a historic ferry terminal where you can buy tickets to and pick up a ferry to Ellis and Liberty Islands, the waits are obviously significantly shorter here than in Manhattan. In addition to the long paved boardwalk with old wooden benches Liberty park has a ton of open grassy areas that are almost always virtually empty (which is a great place to play catch or have a picnic) as well as some smaller nature trails and even a seasonal visitors center at the end of the park with refreshments, information, bathrooms, and a nearby shady area with picnic tables and grills. Between being clean, peaceful, easy to get to, large, and offering great views of Manhattan and the back of the Statue of Liberty, the park is something that shouldn't be missed.Listed in: NYC Parks

Perfect August day; warm, bright and breezy, surrounded by happy people enjoying the day and the music. You can't ask for much more than such summertime fun surrounded by killer views of NYC including the our our own lovely Lady of the Lake, Liberty.
Had a few friends working the event and scored a Staff parking pass, Production bracelet, backstage entry and dinner in the All Band's catering tent. Snaked through the backroads of JC and drove straight in and parked yards away from the entrance, avoiding public transportation drama completely .
The VIP entrance line ran out of VIP bracelets as soon as we got to the gate. Interesting. Didn't the production company gauge how many they would need according to the VIP tickets sold and purchased? Sloppy.
Headed out to the tents to say hi and thank those whose generosity got me to the gig and sat down for an early dinner and dessert. Note: Catering always says that everyone is getting the same food. Bollacks. It's not just that there is better ambiance and decor, the Band tent has better eats by far. Big points for the tiny eggrolls and the best chocolate cake I have ever had.
Went backstage for Kings of Leon and danced like a maniac. The band was spot on and proving that they are indeed kings. Awesome set. Met up with more friends working the event and discovered that the production area was dry as a bone. No alchohol in the working area. The music was amazing, but a drink outdoors a total necessity.
Off to the VIP beer tent where the line was insane. Actually, the all entry beer tent must have been totally insane and the VIP line only moderately crazy. Either way it was a madhouse crush. Met some friendly people on the right of me and some crabby pushy nasties on the left of me in the horde mashing all the way up to the front of the line where one poor security guy was alternately getting crushed and pushing back into the crowd. What a hassle.
First you had to show your ID and get a bracelet. The bracelet has 5 tear off numbers and each time you get one beer, they pull a number tag off. At the end of the 5 you can't have anymore beer. No More Beer For You.
They electronically scan your ID so they know that you're not trying to use it again for another bracelet. Brilliant system to organize who can buy the beer. Once inside the beer garden, production totally dropped the ball. No trash cans anywhere except the entrance. Who is drinking near the entrance? The place looked like downtown Watts, littered with empty cups and trash. Poor organization inside and definitely not enough security. Hopefully they'll be doing some postproduction evaluation and fix such oversights as this for the next time.
Radiohead was onstage by this point to save the moment. State of the art videowall screens flanked the band as they rocked it out. People grooving to the music for as far as the eye can see. This is where the park shines. All it's great outdoors comfortably housing armies of people, dancing, romancing or just plain laid out on their backs.
Wandering the vast expanse, we made our way to the front art installations. The phallic beauty of the tall fire topped pole pyramid made for an easily sighted meetup point and doubled as an artsy seating area. My fave was the horse driven pirate ship, it's flags billowing in the breeze, an absolute stunner.
Tribal sounds steered us closer to the Flower Balloon Village where we found The Do Lab. We met with Josh Fleming, their designer, a great, great talent as well as a supernice guy and gracious host. His invite backstage for more beer was well timed as we had consumed all we could carry out of the beer garden.
The one day I don't have my bikini on under my clothes and there is a massive portable pool behind the DJ decks. Brilliant. So tempted to take a dip. Caution won out as the pool was a little too close to the power generator for my liking.
Tunes were pumping and drawing us onto the grassy dancefloor. All of the DJ talent here at the park tonight are a mix of locals and Europeans. They're heading next to the Electric Picnic, Ireland's music and arts fest, a combination Cochella and Burning Man. Now, that's on the to do list!
Mauritzio from Brazil was on the decks, mashup talent laying down sick tracks. Amazing dancers twisting their bodies to the music like gymnansts under the starry sky amidst the Dr. Seuss-like eruptions of art in a youth nirvana.
Thank you Liberty State Park, good times.Listed in: The Places I Go Out- South…

My favorite park as well! I grew up in Dowtown Jersey City so I've been coming here since I was a little one. It's definitely gotten better over the years, but it's always been a clean, huge space to let the kids run around, bbq, lay out, or just enjoy a day outside of Manhattan since it's so close to NYC.

My favorite park in the whole wide world. As everyone else mentioned, the view of NYC, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island are amazing. You can bbq, go fishing off the piers, sun bathe, toss a football, baseball around, go for a nice walk or jog. If you walk around the park, there are mini-work out stations that allow you to do pushups, situps, etc. Pretty cool. There are also trails that go into little swamps and such in the middle of the park that you can explore a bit. It's definitely a place to get away from the city life for couple of hours or an entire day.

Any time of the year, a NJ city park that brings in spectacular views of the New York City with its skyscrapers, The Statue of Liberty and The Ellis Island, the Bayonne Bridge. Taking the ferry from here to The Statue of Liberty and to Ellis Island which are major NY and NJ attractions are less crowded and less waiting in line. Not only that it's a great place for fitness exercises, jogs and runs, for family get-togethers, picnics and just for a leisurely day out on the park. Much photographic opportunities. Many trails in the park. Barbecue stands in the park. Liked it so much I visit when in the city. Pleasant breeze of sea air. Gorgeous sunset sighting. Seen some dog excrement on grass and guano on any park surface. Watch your step. Or there's the task of wiping it off. Flying seagulls and doves are a common sight. Park closes on sundown. A breathtaking scenery during early morning strolls.

This is a great place to go all summer long. Hang out, have a BBQ, read a book, or fly a kite. Yes, you New Yorkers have Central Park and think it's the best, but it does not my friend have a view or the breeze from the river. From Liberty State Park you can see almost all of Manhattan and Lady Liberty's behind. The grass is green and for the taking. Coming from Manhattan you would take the Path to Newport and take the Light Rail (which is very fun) to the park.
