I hadn't been to LSC since I was in the 3rd grade so when my friend asked if I wanted to accompany him this past weekend I couldn't resist!

A quick ride on the PATH train (okay not so quick - it was ~25 minutes to Grove St and you will need to transfer to another train afterwards) and I was there! LSC was renovated some time ago (at which point they closed the infamous Touch Tunnel! *tears*, so the place looks great!)

We started off at the new Skyscraper: Achievement and Impact exhibit where I was forced to "Walk the Steel" - Walking on a narrow steel beam about 30 feet above the gallery floor of Skyscraper.  There is no net, just a quick harness. I was legit terrified and it did not help that the 2 kids in front of me backed out after they were strapped in. No bueno, although I admit it was exhilarating. We spent the rest of the day going through the Touch Tunnel (you have to crawl on all 4s completely in the dark, using your left hand as a guide along the walls while security guards observe - and probably laugh at - you through security cameras, we watched Flying Monsters 3D about pterosaurs (I love Dinosaurs!!) as well as Born Into the Wild about orphan elephants and orangutans. Topped off with a ride in the Curtain Wall Test (Hurricane in a Box) where we were doused with painful water and thrown into 50 mph winds and watching the Robotics tournament going on that day, my inner nerd was definitely released.

Such a great place for kids and adults alike - it is truly a wonder how much there is to learn about the world out there!

This place might be pretty cool for elementary/middle school aged kids, but for two twenty-somethings who both typically enjoy a good science museum and seeing animals, this was just a "meh" visit. Way too much reading and not enough interactive or even stand back and look or watch type of exhibits. There really wasn't anything here that I couldn't find on YouTube or wikipedia.

The turtle tank was the highlight for me. Two of the males kept fighting and trying to flip each other over which entertained my boyfriend and I  for a good 5 mins (hey, these thing move pretty slow!)

With that said, you know it's a pretty boring place when the most exciting thing is watching turtles fight...And no, we never got to see one get turned over :(

If you get a good deal through Groupon this might be worth a shot but don't waste a full $15.75 for each adult like we did.

I grew up in MA and frequented the Museum of Science in Boston as a kid and even recently as a young adult, so maybe I'm just holding this place to pretty high standards, but if you have ever been to MOS don't bother with this one, you'll probably be disappointed.

We purchased discount tickets on groupon which included one IMAX and one 3D movie....what an AWESOME day! It was almost overwhelming trying to decide where to begin. We did the skyscraper room where we walked on the beams, went through the (terrifying) touch room, watched Tornadoes in IMAX and Flying Monsters in 3D. It was such a full day and aside from the time we took to have a bite to eat and some coffee, we were going going going the rest of the time. As far as the food court is concerned, the pannini was good, stay away from the turkey burger and pizzas, unless you don't mind spending a lot for sub par tasteless food. The coffee however was top notch, I ended up going back for a second cup because it was so good.
We went on a beautiful warm and sunny October day so it was not crowded at all. All of the displays were in working order, very few were broken or mangled. This was wonderfully surprising knowing that it is a children's/young adults interactive museum.
Oh and bring your camera if you want an amazing picture of the New York skyline. The views in all directions are gorgeous!
We will definitely come back if we see another groupon coupon!!

I'm 22, and for the "older" crowd.. I thought this place was pretty neat. I liked the fact that you got to play around with everything while learning at the same time. Four floors of fun and facts!

And if you have younger kids, they're not going to want to learn much.. just mainly play with the cool stuff. You have to read A LOT of it to learn, and I noticed that all of kids weren't doing so, but who could blame them?

Parking is 7.00 .... I was a bit annoyed. Then the cafeteria was expensive. 2 burgers and fries 15.00. A bit over priced.

I don't plan to go back. For me, it was just a once and done thing.

A great interactive center for adults and kids. The exhibits are interactive so you can touch play pull etc.Teens would be bored and would not appreciate the experience.

The Imax theater has various shows for your choosing. It looks like a planetarium, which is really cool. Teens would enjoy this.

The rooftop deck allows you to go see the fabulous NYC skyline and Jersey city downtown views.

Free parking on the vast lot. The entrance fee is midpriced, not wallet-busting. The IMAX show however is not included in that entrance fee, must pay seperate charge. Purchase your tickets altogether though.

After you leave, you can visit the adjacent Liberty State Park or go dine at one of the restaurants near the marina.

Memories of visiting "the science place" as a kid are better than the reality of coming here as an adult, but Liberty Science Center still rocks.  There are a lot of interactive exhibits to get your nerd on, as well as some interesting natural habitat and wildlife up on the top floor.  Make your way around the various levels with a view down into the vestibule below.

Bring kids with you to heighten the joy at discovering something new, but avoid holiday weekends such as President's Day or any weekend where all the kids have off from school Monday and need something in the area to do!  That "something" will become "getting in your way" and "screaming at the top of their lungs for no reason" and you don't want that.

Kinetic energy is fascinating, but not when its inside of 5,000 tourist children with sugar-induced meltdowns at the ready.

Keep an eye out not only for the regularly featured science films, but the occasional cinematic 3D experience such as Star Wars and others offered for a limited time.

If you're interested in acoustics, after you hit up the science center itself, walk around toward the light rail stop under the Turnpike ramp, where they have one or two little places you can try out "magic" auditory experiences... a megaphone that echoes back to you, and a set of silver plates you can stand between and hear yourself very clearly like inside a clam shell.

Its easy to then hit Liberty State Park for a picnic and some sun, as well as the best views of downtown NYC... in fact you get a preview of all of this from the observation deck on the top floor of LSC!!

Liked it. Came here with a groupon, had no issues. Got there a little past 11AM on a Saturday and it was practically empty. It started to fill up later in the day but still wasn't packed at all. There were absolutely no lines and no crowds for anything. IMAX dome was cool, same exact IMAX dome as the science center in Boston.

Felt like a big kid, just roaming around touching everything. Felt pretty gross afterwards though because you're touching things that have been touched like eleventy billion times before.

Saw some stuff that I've never seen before anywhere else, like Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. Also, learned a few things here and there.

Overall, it was a very fun time.

So much fun here!  And this is coming from me & my bf (we're in our 20s).  We dont need kids to make us go to a science museum, they're fun even for adults.  We got there at 11am on a Saturday and didn't leave until closing time (5pm).  There's 4 floors and sooo much stuff to check out.

We actually had a groupon deal so we got to check out the IMAX dome & the motion simulator.  IMAX hubble was cool, bf thought it was boring though...  And the motion simulator is a fun thing for kids...

But the rest of the museum is very hands on which means no getting yelled at for touching stuff.  Cafeteria food was also not outrageously overpriced.  Location is also very close to the tram, easy to get to by public transportaion.  5 star in my book.

I should have looked up this center before I went. I didn't know it was for children, BUT it was still a lot of fun. I think the adults had more fun than the kids to be honest.

There are a bunch of interactive games and diagrams to fuss with. I actually felt a bit stupid not being able to figure out some of the games while my 5 year old peers beat me when I looked over at them in the corner of my eye.
I decided I didn't want to play anymore.
When I did see something I wanted to play, I felt like the big old bully pushing the smaller kids out of the way so I could play. Thats mean, so I just watched. Plus I didnt want "mom" to come to the rescue..

We also watched one of the Imax movies and it was pretty informative, much more than what I learned way back in my highschool days of science, so that also made me feel out of the information loop, but glad I finally brushed up with my 5 year old peers..

And also, try to stay away from the gift shop. Everything is really tempting and I found myself trying to reason with my conscience to buy, "but I'm going to learn!" wait.. was I just arguing with my mom or myself..? All the toys are awesome, and some left me wondering how they worked. ah to be a kid again!

First time there, took 9 year old niece.   She had a great time.
But... I would estimate that around 1/3 of the hands on exhibits were either completely broken or only semi-functional.  As Kathleen S also said, my wife and I had commented on how there's so much hands on stuff and no hand sanitizers.

There were no employees around in any of the open floor areas to answer questions, like you'd see in any similar museum or facility.

At one point, I approached one of those areas where they do supervised experiments.  One of the four employees milling around (and there was only one station occupied) told me that they were full.  I remarked that it was hard to tell that with the 4 of them standing around doing nothing.  He shrugged his shoulders and went back to doing nothing.  After my wife started taking pictures of them standing around, two managers came.  They said that the problem was that they weren't expecting so many people and that they really were busy even though they were standing around doing nothing.  We were told that the reason all the stuff was broken (they were not surprised at the comment) was that they only have two people to fix them all.  So what.

In the cafeteria it was similarly chaotic.  All of the stations were backed up so there was no way to actually see what line was for what station.  At one point the wrap making guy said "I've had it with this sh*t and stormed away, leaving a line of people standing there with no replacement.  Eventually someone stepped in and made the guy in front of us a grilled chicken wrap and when my wife asked for the same thing she was told "no".

If it was so overrun with unexpected people, why was the parking lot less than half full, with no busses or group vehicles at all???

Will never go back there.  From our experience today it's overpriced, warn out, and mismanaged.

The museum is fantastic.   Unfortunately when you go with your kids and it coincides with all the class trips and camp day trips - what a horror!    The children are not monitored and they cut in front of the kids who are there solo (and not with a mob of other kids) for the day.     I am sure that is true for these types of venues in the summer and not specific to LSC - ... just sayin'...

Remember this place being awesome so trekked out here from Queens. Would have given the place 2 stars but the IMAX theater (supposedly the biggest in the world) is pretty cool. A lot of the hands on exhibits, maybe about a quarter of them, were broken or missing pieces.
Probably still a good place for little kids who just want to play with stuff regardless of the missing parts.
Not really worth the trip from Queens unless you want to check out the IMAX. In my opinion you can spend just as much time at the Hall of Science.
And if you do happen to take the trip get something to eat before or afterward and safe yourself the mediocre overpriced cafeteria food.

Love coming here at least once a year.  It's always fun.  Just don't go when they have 10 schools there....no fun at all.  The dome Imax is awesome. The Touch Tunnel is nothing at all, from what I hear the old one was way better.  Everyone is really great!  I do wish they had Gluten Free options in their cafe for people with Celiacs or gluten allergies.

When I was here a few years ago, they had so many more interesting demos or experiments for the kids.  They need to add different things to do and see.  I do LOVE the Dome IMAX.  I would go there just for the IMAX experience.  It's nothing like the other IMAX's.  Being in the huge dome is such an experience and watching about the stars and space makes you feel like you're in the movie.

A nice educational place take a family, but if you are young professional that's into museums, be expected to finish the exhibits and IMAX show in 2-3 hours. This is not a place you would take your time around like a museum in Manhattan. I still had a lot of fun.

I came here with a Groupon with two other friends. I liked the Skyscraper exhibit the best. You even get to go on a steel beam like a construction site and walk on it. There are plenty of other exhibits that are hands on.

This place has potential. I brought my 2-year-old on a Tuesday; I figured this was a relatively "safe" day to bring him to a destination I expected to be utter chaos. The Center opens at 9am and at 9:45am (on a Tuesday, no less) there was already a line of cars waiting to prepay tickets ($7 per car) to get into the parking lot. A big minus.

Unfortunately my fears were not eased by the hundreds (yes, literally - hundreds) of school kids waiting to get into the Center. I had to desperately flag down an employee to ask where "non-school-trip people" should go. The line to buy tickets was short and since my Groupon passes were handled awkwardly but successfully.

I recommend the 2nd floor (We Explore) for 2-year-olds. My son had a blast with albeit simple activities - spooning rice into cups, playing with a ball machine, painting with water on a slate board. The rest of the Center was just okay for a 2-year-old. I found the selection of animals to be limited (the turtle sanctuary was the most interesting by far) although conveniently located low to the ground for little ones to have easier access. The IMAX theater is recommended for 7+, the 3D theater for 6+ and I couldn't even find the simulator ride.

Unfortunately our trip had to be cut short (we stayed for 2 hours) as the influx of school children was not only overwhelming but unsafe for my child (he got pushed by rambunctious 6-8 year olds).

I wish I could say we're counting down the minutes to go back. Perhaps my attitude will change once my son is older; however, with a 2-year-old I wouldn't rush back.

Saw this venue pop up in a corporate email and so glad that I came across it. The main purpose for my visit a few weekends ago was to check out the new IMAX Hubble movie on the nation's largest IMAX Dome Theater! I haven't seen an IMAX dome like this since the junior high class trips to the science center. And this is what I remember a "real" IMAX being (not one of those mini fake IMAX screens populating some of Manhattan's movie theatres).

The journey began at World Financial Center, which is where my friend and I had headed to catch the Liberty Landing Marina Water Taxi. But what's this? The pier is under construction? A quick dial to the ferry company and I learn that the summer weekend ferry service doesn't start until around May. Argh! Fortunately we gave ourselves enough time and had seen the PATH station earlier. So back track we did and eventually get the PATH to Exchange Place and then the light rail to Liberty State Park Station.

Side Note: I don't know that I've ever been to Jersey City before and it was an eerie feeling. I felt kind of like I was in a Manhattan ghost town. There were office buildings, but almost no sign of life. I was expecting some tumble weeds to blow bye and then have to duck for cover as two gunslingers had it out. Anywho...

Walking up to the science center I don't think I have been that excited since I was a kid (well, maybe the last time I was at the zoo or aquarium not so long ago). We picked up our reserved Hubble movie tickets as well as free science center entry wristbands (love the corporate perks) and away we go. I could hardly contain myself from running around to each of the different exhibits, but alas we had a movie to catch and wanted to see about getting a snack beforehand, so to the cafeteria we went.

Holy cow! Did I find a time machine that transported me back to my elementary school cafeteria? Are there going to be mini plastic pouches filled with chocolate milk (yes, my school experimented with this concept for all but one week as kids figured out they could spray a nice fountain of milk by slamming their fists on the pouches)? Where are the sporks? This cafeteria was awesome. Except it was kind of grown up at the same time. Instead of Beatrice in a hair net dolling out sloppy joes, there were different stations setup and people serving up bites in a more chef-like outfit. I relegated myself to chocolate milk (no, not in a pouch, but rather a carton) and Dippin' Dots. Mmm...

We eventually get seated in the IMAX dome and wait for the action to begin. Holy bejeezus this screen is enormous! My entire field of vision (including my periphery) was soaking up the awesomeness that is IMAX digital film. And the Hubble movie itself was awesome. I especially loved the imagery taken from the telescope itself of the galaxies that are like 10 billion light years away.  Afterwards while we were exiting the theatre I noticed posters for Hollywood blockbusters. Do they really show mainstream movies here too?!? YES! Yes, they do! I'm definitely coming back to check out the next blockbuster hit on the BIG big screen.

We strolled around the rest of the science center for a while, which was awesome in it its own right. I could continue to blab on about it, but I'll let you discover it for yourself. I will say though that my favorite was the live animal exhibit. And how cool is it that they let you dial a number, enter a quick code and listen to a recording of more information on the particular exhibit you are looking at? Super cool.

I will definitely be back here. Next time will be a warm spring afternoon when I can walk around the Liberty State Park before and/or after experiencing some weird science.

No, I don't want to touch all the sticky exhibits. And I don't want to bring a kid here to touch them either. Or maybe I'm just bitter because when I was 10 or 11, well before I knew what polymers were, I made a gorgeous silly putty at a DIY exhibit here. I used clear glue and blue food coloring to make it, so it was this really pretty translucent putty. In hindsight, it might have resembled a giant blue booger. So when I brought it home to show to my mom, she said silly putty is a gross habitat for germs and she made me throw it out.

So yeah, I'm still bitter years later, but, whatever, this place is great for kids. Not sure what the adults are so thrilled about (maybe they're just more supportive of their kid's wierd interactive projects? maybe every parent now has lots of hand sanitizer?) but the only selling point for me is the IMAX theater. "Hubble 3D" made me feel like a giddy kid again.

Great for the kids!  Clean and spacious.  Alot of on-hands exhibits - art tissue project in the toddler section, be a surgeon,  fresh water vs salt water experiment, playing with sediment or going through an outside obstacle course.

I would have love to do the wind tunnel but it wasn't open at the time we went. My daughter was able to feed a Canadian rat and she loves cranking this shooter of which the ball hits a bullseye and goes through a maze.

for $15.75 (just exhibits), it's a decent price and you can spend all day there.  It's easy to get to and ample parking spaces.

For the extra $ exhibits, the employees don't do a very good sell.  We met this employee who mentions them but doesn't know the details about it.  Uh... need training here.

Food is expensive as you expected but I was surprised they were serving Texan food like pulled pork, bbq ribs and roasted chicken.  Not crazy about the salad bar.  I would have preferred a pre-made salad in its container and then you choose your own salad dressing.

I was impressed with the amount of animals or species at this museum.  My first thought it was like the Queens Science Museum but with more animals.  The dangerous and camoflaging species was the most interesting section of the museum.

Great place for kids of all ages.
My wife and I (early thirties and late twenties) along with our kids, 12, 3 and 1, all found things to keep us engaged.
For older kids and adults there are more than enough activities to entertain you, like the sky scrapper walk (where you walk a steel beem about 15 feet off the floor while in a harness) and window pane test (where you sit in a simulator where they test skyscrapper window panes against hurracane force winds and rain.
For the younger kids there is a great play activity area that kept both my 1 year old and 3 year old happy for hours.
There are many other numerous things to do, but we were there for 6 hours and didn't see everything.
    Great place.

So guess who totally saw a quadruple bypass surgery here? I did I did! For my AP Bio class senior year of high school, we were scheduled to see a surgery at Liberty Science Center. I think the actual surgery was being done in Mo-Town, but broadcast here. Anyway, the guy had a heart attack on the way over, so it ended up being a quadruple bypass! Talk about intense surgery.. although it was so amazing to see.

I definitely heart LSC. The ticket prices are decent and there are discounts during the holidays, so I'd check the website. They have a lot of live fascinating demonstrations and exhibits. I've gotta confess.. I've always wanted to participate in one of those camp ins, night in the museum style. Even now. haha I'm totally a hands on learner and I think this is one of those really wonderful museums that's great for all school aged students and the adults that bring them to the JC!

Wow this place brings back memories! We used to come here with another family when I was little. Load up the minivan with kids and go exploring. I distinctly remember making videos so it looked like we were walking in space, frozen ice cream and of course, THE TOUCH TUNNEL. What kid doesn't want to crawl around in the dark maze?

There is also an IMAX there now which is great as the ones in NYC sell out super quick. Would love to go back soon and have some fun in the museum. Any takers??

Stopped by here to watch the LARGEST IMAX DOME THEATER in the whole U.S.!  Wow, it was SICK! I watched the IMAX Hubble Movie, and the images completely filled my whole field of vision, I really felt like i was part of the action. You will be amazed by pictures only seen by astronomers and astronauts.   You will see large-scale, astonishing  images of some of the most distant aspects of the universe such as star "nurseries," unimaginably distant galaxies, and glowing nebulae located in the largest and deepest part of the cosmos.  They said it was up to 13 billion light years away from Earth too. Please note, this film is presented in 2D and not 3D, but it was still Amazing! You gotta see it to Believe it!!!

Getting there from the Turnpike is definitely Jersey-style: The roads seem to make no sense, and it feels like you're ending up at a mall (like the Somerset Patriots' stadium). Amy guided Jonah, Leah and me through the museum, which was remodeled in the past couple of years.

Almost-four-years-old Jonah was just old enough to appreciate one-third to one-half of the exhibits, and 16-month-old Leah had fun with whatever she could get her hands on. The second floor had the most age-appropriate exhibits for both, with rice to measure and pour, balls to move with gears and cars to build and race. Other great exhibits were the live animals, fish and dredging simulators.

I look forward to seeing them get excited about and understand more at nature and life-sciences museums.

This has to be on the top list for Science Centers we've visited with our two and half year old beating out Chicago's, Boston's, and San Francisco's respective institutions.  It truly caters to the under five set.

We loved the open, airy space of the building.. The iexplore area was a hit where she was fascinated with the rice pouring/filling/scooping exhibit (I wish our neighborhood children's museum would think of this instead of sand!).

It was so unique that this science center had so many live animals (versus dioramas with stuffed animals as in the Harvard Natural History Museum).  She was fascinated with the eat or be eaten exhibits with its sweet turtles, fish, and birds.

The end of our visit was capped by viewing the cast of Sue, the T Rex that she was so excited to see again having seen the original in Chicago's Field Museum a few months ago...

We really wished we lived closer!  There was so much to keep both our two year old and her parents entertained!

Liberty Science center is top notch. Easily make a day out of this one . Lots of interactive junk and very kid friendly. Food ain't too bad either. Outdoor edition is a big plus and it was recently renovated so everything looks new and pretty. Great for adults too! Great all around. You truly will not be disappointed. Also If you go be sure to stop in the IMAX theater. It will definitely be an experience you will remember. You will never see kids so excited about science. And It inspires them to be the "rocket scientists" of the future!

Very cool spot, never got a chance to go on a field trip as a kid, would have loved it. Got a chance this past weekend to chaperone a field trip for the charity I work with. I really enjoyed myself, we were there for about 4 hours, almost an hour of which was spent in an IMAX movie (massive screen/ crazy sound system); I think we have easily used another hour or so, I felt like we missed a lot. Will definitely go back another day when I can take my time.

My first time to this place and I just loved it....Many interactive games & exhibits for children and adults....Most deal with issues of your daily life like politics, communication, the environment etc.... I only had 2 hours so I only saw 2 floors....I will definately will be returning there soon!!!

Great for kids and geeky parents but dies the staff - especially security (why do they need so much security?) and the box office - have to be so rude?

We took our grandkids to the venue.  We did not see either of the movies but spent time in the exhibits.   A number of the exhibits  weren't working.  Some had height or other requirements such as requiring appointments that precluded the grandkids from participating.   The best exhibits were the Mars area and the dangerous animals.  The communications and infections disease areas where weak.  The cafeteria was as expected expensive and  not very good.

A wonderful, often very interactive, museum of interests to youngsters and grownups.  Has a large variety of science-related exhibits.  Definitely plan on spending several hours here.  Located in Liberty State Park, N.J. Turnpike Exit 14-B. [Photos: http://www.flickr.com/... ]

I'll admit, this place is pretty boring if you are not a kid or a parent,,, this isnt the type of museum 20somethings would go to with their friends, but for the sake of this review, I'm going to pretend I'm 12 years old.
They have lots of interactive exhibits here. Nice demonstrations on science concepts. I liked the animal exhibits the best. Kinda pricey. Nice views on the 3rd floor of the NYC skyline.

Underwhelmed.  I can't believe how huge this place is, when it really only needs 2 of the 4 floors.   As others have noted, many parts of the exhibits were not working, like a LOT of them.   Seemed to have a lot more workers than it really needed.   We got the metal detector wand over us we walked in, which seemed a bit over the top.   Next was a booth as we got in line with 2 people at it, not sure what they were doing---but none of these people told us the line we were getting in was members only--til we waited awhile.  So, a lot of people not really helping.    I will say the kids all seemed to be having a great day, as a matter of fact I heard one kid say "This is the best day ever."   My friend and I speculated that perhaps she had never been let out of the basement before, but that did seem to be the consensus among the kids.  I found it funny that with all the exhibits on germs and infections, there were many hands-on exhibits with no Purell in sight.   Plenty of bathrooms, most with diaper changing areas, which is a smart move.  If you are an adult with no kids, I'd say skip it.   We saw the IMAX movie on Hubble--it was okay.  But at $22 each, incl the movie, plus $7 for parking--I expected more.

Great for kiddos, mostly kids the under age 10-set. Very spacious and good for running around/ bumping into things that are meant to be bumped into. For adults, it's always fun to learn about science in a hands-on manner. Nice views of NYC from the 3rd floor... I especially like the aquarium with the HUGE fish!
