I'm from an area of LA where good parks at a reasonable driving distance (within 15 minutes of acceptable traffic) and lots of things to do/look at is practically unheard of. Having said that, I confess that I LOVE Liberty Park.

It's got water, animals, lots of playgrounds for little kids, lots of picnic/bbq areas, aviary, a small museum, a grill/resturant, and mucho greenery. I like the two outer trials so you are not always running into other people. Granted it gets crowded during the summer, it is worth the wait for parking. Speaking of which, I like the parking setup. Because it's one-way, you don't have to worry too much about backing up into someone else's car. The only gripe I would have is that you have to U-turn your way back into the park if you can't find parking on one side. (Another gripe would be that it's too big but that could be a good gripe.)

Great park!

Lake, Playground, Horsehoe, Basketball, tennis, aviary...etc

A nice place to play, exercise, cool down from the heat, relax, read a book. Really too much to list. A great feature.

After moving to Salt Lake City in the mid 90's and accidentally renting a home that was near Liberty Park (I discovered the park when walking my dog th first weekend I was there), I chose to buy a home close to the park so that I could continue to enjoy all that it had to offer.

The features of the park are numerous with the aviary in the southwest corner of the park being the highlight and the 24th of July fireworks being the other highlight.  Around the outer edge of the park is a bark filled jogging path and next to it is wide concrete walk where you can walk, roller blade or ride your bike in lazy circles around the park.  In the center of the park you will find beautiful trees, a folk museum, a children's water play area, a pond with geese, ducks, seagulls and paddle boats for rent, a small set of amusement park rides, BBQ pits, sand volleyball, tennis courts, handball courts and much more.  It has everything!

I moved to a place just a few blocks from Liberty Park. I really dig this park. I lived in the bland 'burbs for a decade and wanted to be able to live closer to downtown (less commute etc.) This park truly is an oasis large trees, water features, swimming pool and a couple of really big playgrounds and scale model of the Wasatch front as a wading pool for the kids, and my personal favorite a spring fed water fountain at the south-east corner of the park. There a weekly gathering of the counterculture on the east side of the park on Sundays for a "drum circle" which is for me hit or miss sometimes it's pleasant to just kick it on the hill listening and sometimes there's just a really edgy feeling based on some of the other people that have gathered.

I dropped a star to 4 because the duck pond gets really nasty by the end of summer and I'd like to see a bit more maintenance. I grew up in the Bay Area so Golden Gate Park is my idea of a great urban park but Liberty Park is the closest thing I can get in Utah.

What I like about Liberty Park is that you don't have the constant fear that you will be mowed down by a speed crazed biker (hit once), or better an unconscious motorist (almost) like you will at Sugarhouse Park. The outer track or inner sidewalks provide good walking spaces away from faster transports. The crowds are lower here all though somewhat busy during the summer. There are numerous fountains for both viewing, and child playery depending on your desired outing, and last summer they made some improvements to the lake with an island terrace, although the bridge seems to never be unlocked.

Much to do of course, the pond with paddle boats, and concessions open in the summer with mini carnival rides, and the Tracy Aviary. There are horseshoe pads, basketball courts, tennis courts, a wally-ball wall, and a swimming pool. With barbecue pits, and a couple open fireplaces what more could you want in a local park?

Fun park.   See the kiddies waterplay area, the fireworks on 24th of  July, and they have a wonderful free folk series:  music and dance by a variety of diverse ethnic groups, performing outside each week.  Take a lawn chair and picnic and dance the hat dance.

Paddleboating (which is actually sort of crappy and hard, but fun theoretically and then funny when you try it), an aviary, tennis courts, a pool, ferris wheel, and, if you are lucky, my husband chasing two enormous dogs around the lake containing the paddleboating.  Not to mention the bbq stations, several great playgrounds--one of which features a water-play area for little kids, a folk art museum in an historic home, a hippie drum circle on Sundays (only one person was stabbed, and that was last year), and volleyball courts.  My baby and I go in the afternoons to feed the ducks and geese with lots of other similar patrons.  Plus there is a fun restaurant across the street from the south end of the park for weekend brunch.  Beautiful park and lots of fun.
