i feel the need to set up my situation first... i had just broken up with my hairdresser and was in NEED of some TLC. i wanted to take my ultra violet-red hair to blonde. i knew i needed someone really skilled and also honest about the process. i have heard from a couple of friends that this place was the SHIT--and that Julie is the lady to see. i had nothing to loose (except my hair) and i figured i would give it a go. i booked an appointment with Julie.
upon arrival the place was super clean and SUPER cute! Julie was really warm and sat me down as we discussed my options. i really appreciated that she took the time to listen to what i wanted and offered her opinion and also a few other options we could do. she was easy to talk to and made me feel really comfortable in the salon. we decided to go blonde in a few stages, and i FLOATED out of that salon feeling like a queen. i have gotten multiple compliments on my hair and i am hooked!
bottom line: you'd be a fool not to give it a go!
I am so relieved to have finally made it to Level 4 Salon to see Doritt. She is the most awesome hairstylist ever. I have been going to Doritt for years and she has recently moved to level 4. The place has amazing natural light coming in from big loft-like windows. It is clean and modern looking and very spacious. It is close to bart & Union Square. Doritt is a color expert and curly hair master. She is a good listener and is receptive to clients' styling requests. Doritt's expertise with curly hair is a godsend. I'm not sure what I would do without her. Go for it. You will be pleased.
Hi there I'm Brian, the hairdresser-now working at Level4 Salon have almost ten years experience doing hair and I love it still!
this is a great location, close to everything union square area offers.Beautiful salon environment, No nails or skincare though. Only hair services available in this salon. (there is a good manicurist downstairs in the building.)
LETISHA! We're not worthy! We're not worthy!
I have only been going to her for about 2 years...and I am so bummed that I didn't find her 11 years sooner. This woman is not only a stunningly beautiful goddess with the kindest heart you can imagine, she is also a true expert in hair cutting and styling. I'm not exaggerating: this woman can do ANYTHING with hair. I have slightly wavy and fine Asian hair...and not *pretty* wavy, mind you -- it's basically like a permanent case of bedhead. She can cut my hair to perfect proportions, well-suited to my face, and more importantly...my lifestyle. I love that I can just wash and go and look nice.
She recently put my hair in an updo (my first time getting one from her). I was AWED. I asked for a "beachy, slightly messy, natural-looking updo with very big waves." She gave me EXACTLY that...and then some! It was more beautiful than I had hoped for. AND she did it with only 17 bobby pins. In like 40 minutes. Anyone who has ever had an updo will understand that this was a major feat. And being the sweet and caring goddess that she is, she even asked me repeatedly whether the bobby pins were giving me a headache or discomfort of any kind.
She has also done my highlights for a couple years and she knows her stuff. She's really artistic at weaving in very subtle highlights and executing the exact color that I request.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN!
A lot of great reviews for this salon here.
Based on the great reviews, I booked myself an appointment. I found the cut to be mediocre at best. It was quoted at 20% off when I called to make the apt, but upon paying, the stylist wanted to charge me the full price. I had to argue a bit to get the sale price.
I forgot the name of the stylist, but she was middle aged, a little on the heavier side and with long tight curly hair.
I am not a fan. I wonder why there are so many positive reviews. I really only trust reviews of salons where there are mixed reviews. It's rather inconceivable that every customer is "thrilled" with their cuts.
I will not come back.
Dwan M. said everything I would have except she knew more about Letisha than I did/do.
I love the haircut she gave me and I only wish I lived there so she could recreate it every four to six weeks.
Letisha is awesome! She has 24 years experience (she's only 39) and she is the hair stylist for the R&B group En Vogue (you know, the famous female group who sung the song "Giving him something he can feel"). She has been doing their hair since the beginning of their career. She has also recently styled Alicia Keys (BET Awards).
She is very professional, very friendly, laid back, and just cool as hell. She knows hair inside and out, and she will never lead you astray. The prices are great, actually very low, for the quality that you receive. For the summer while I am here, I will continue to go to her to get my hair styled. She can do all types of hair. On top of everything else, she is a painter and a foody, so she knows all of the hot spots in San Francisco and the Bay area. So, make sure you see Letisha.
Iv got one word for the place.....
LETISHA IS AEWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very talented hair styelist and the price is so right.
I love my stylist. Now, being a girl of mixed race, with long thick frizzy hair, I decided that I wanted to add some color in, maybe try something different. So I found Level 4, and went IN PERSON to make an appointment. Got hooked up with the Salon Manager, Jackie, with Letisha. She's the friggin bomb. B-O-M-B. Don't you steal her from me. She makes my hair look GOOOOODDD, and for a very reasonable price in terms of nice SF salons for a cut & color (but then, I also think she likes me too) So then, I hooked my friend Judy up with her, and hot daym, Judy loves her hair as well, and Judy don't love shit.
I hear all the stylists are pretty kicking, and the only downside to my homegirl is it can be very hard to score an appointment (since they set aside, like, three friggin hours for me to get my hair done)
If I could rate this place less than 1 I would. Well let me take that back since it seems that other people have had some great experiences here so I think it makes sense to rate the hairdresser. I had my hair cute by Zeon a few weeks ago. All I can say is that when I went back into the office my co-workers asked me what the hell my hairdresser did to my hair.
I asked him for a trim and to somehow work on the layers since they were feathering too much (and I have straight hair so this is not ok) He chopped my hair in straight layers that looked like a 2nd grader chopping their Barbie's hair! Unreal!! I also told him I wanted to keep the length on the longer side, his interpretation was to layer the sides excessively and leave the back long (isn't that a mullet?)
The Salon gave me my money back and asked if I would be interested in coming in for them to fix it. I prefer to stay away from this place.
If you take the advice of other reviewers and do go (like I did), make sure Zeon is NOT your hairdresser.
I started hair-dating Len back when I worked in the Fi-Di and he was heading the famous Utopia Salon. It was a good excuse for a 20 min walk from the office and I always came away more beautiful. Fast forward to now that I work from home (not complaining about that) and am infinitely lazier. I tried a couple really nice people within walking distance again and I am sorry to report that nice people do not equal good hair. Len is super professional and fun to spend all the time it takes to correct a Raggedy-Ann hair color. I am sorry for cheating, Len, please make my hair pretty again!! I recommend a visit to him at Level 4 Salon or wherever he may be.
When my friends ask me how much I spend on haircut, they always say it's too expensive, but I say it's worth every dime!..
This place gives the best service and I don't mind spending a lot for it. I get my cuts with Tatiana, and I've never been disappointed. She listens to you and gives you suggestions based on her experiences.
Added bonus, they give discounts for first-timers and for any referrals you bring in.
Hey everyone... I have been going here for years and LOVE Letisha. She turns my dark frizzy hair into dream locks every single time! She has moved though.. she is now at Frange Blue!
Letisha is awesome. I just tell her what I want and let her do her magic. I trust her judgment completely and she NEVER fails me. I'm pretty particular when it comes to my thick, wavy (did I mention frizz-prone?) hair and Letisha knows exactly how to handle it.
Unfortunately, everyone else loves Letisha also and getting an appointment with her is like breaking into Fort Knox. More recently I was desperate so I booked an appt with Brandon. I was a little worried at first since I've never gotten my hair cut by someone other than Letisha, but Brandon did an awesome job. Perfectly cut bangs and layers "a la nicole richie" that are growing out spectacularly (not to mention an awesome scalp massage). So now I'm torn between two excellent stylists at Level 4. I guess I'm going to have to get my hair cut more often and alternate stylists!
Letisha was AMAZING! I honestly don't think I will ever let anyone else touch my hair! Before seeing her I always colored my own hair and often cut it myself... NEVER AGAIN!
She worked with me to decide how I should go about getting a lighter color, explained thoroughly the process, and was funny and fun as well! The entire staff was kind as well, I had a sore throat going in and everyone I spoke to offered me tea.
The experience I had at this salon was great, and I recommend Latisha to anyone who cares about their hair!
Berlin is amazing. I've been going to him for a couple of years now and have never had the urge to stray. Which is rare for me, since I'm very slutty about hairstylists. You can tell him exactly what you want, and he will do as you ask. Or, you can place yourself in his talented hands and let him do whatever he chooses, after which you will emerge with a new look you never would have thought of yourself, but which you will love.
Either way, you will look fabulous each time you leave, have an excellent conversation, and enjoy some time with his adorable dog. What more could you want, really? Five stars.
Even after 6 months, I'm still loving my highlights! Berlin, who's moved onto David & Friends downstairs, was really helpful with finding a good color for me that's subtle, but still noticeable on my jet black hair.
As for the salon itself, I enjoyed the cool and relaxed setting, despite its busy Union Square location. It's clean, bright, and friendly; and the 20% off for first time customers is a major plus!
i got a haircut from Berlin a while ago and i have to say that i will never go back to him ever again. you know, MY definition of long hair is different from anyone else. Maybe you think that shoulder-length is long while I seriously think that 4 inches past my shoulder is a little too short for me........
Well, so I told Berlin... I'd like to keep my hair somewhat long.... maybe right about here. (pointing towards the end of the bra line in the back) AND no layers... just straight across the back. Then when he got his scissor in his hand, he goes, you know... your hair is just WAY too long and cuts it shorter than what I asked for! Ok... I was like, OMG! that's too short!! Then he goes, that's ok... your hair is a lot healthier now.
So, I was already a little annoyed....but I said fine. If my hair was damaged, then that's ok... it'll grow back. It wasn't too big of a difference anyway, so I said whatever with it. But when I got home, I realized it wasn't even straight in the back! It was crooked.... left side longer than the right. I mean, seriously.... you cut my hair shorter than what I wanted... AND you cut it crooked??! AND you are the Master Stylist??
You know, he was cool and all with his tattoos all over his arm... except when he said, OMG your hair is just way too long?? (like, um i happen to LIKE long hair and this is MY hair not urs?!) but dude, when you cut my hair all crooked AND charge me some 70 bux?? UNCOOL!
Actually, I give him one more star on this because he offered to fix it and give me my money back, but I said no thanks. Just please... hands off of my hair.
What a great place. Skill level is high, people are friendly and I now have great hair. I found my place!!!!
Kwandee, I miss you ever since I left CA. He truly has an eye for color. But what is endearing about him is there is no pretense. Actually, there is zero pretense at Level 4. The people are down to earth and it's a very small salon. Cool vibe and very reasonably priced.
Love Kwandee. He is a genius with color. He makes me feel very comfortable at all times and really listens to what I want. He is very honest about what can be done with my hair type.
The salon is not snooty at all. Great vibe, great people.
update: 4/1/07
came to see the lovely letisha who hooked my hurrr up from blondey-type honey-like to dark chocolate with peekaboo blonde/red highlights. combined with a fierce blowout, WATCH OUT SF. :)
also what was cool was seeing brandon there - he's a stylist i went to school with at san francisco institute of esthetics and cosmetology.
go and give em some LOVE! your head needs it!

lovely cozy space, lots of light. don't know about the other stylists but LETISHA is the bomb. she does the naturally sexy type styles (completely individualized), great color, and a MEAN blow out.
I followed Zeon here from Glamarama, which used to be my favorite salon, until he left. I probably pay too much for my haircuts, but I'm pretty religious about my hairdresser, and Zeon brings out just the right amount of wave in my long, thick asian hair.
I have thick, unruly, wavy hair which I hate - I have a few friends who had Thermal Reconditioning (Japanese Straigtening) and swore by it. I decided to do some research and found Len. I had a consultation with him and he made me confident that it would be great. It took hours but it flew by, Len chatted with me and even provided lunch. It has lasted a really long time and I am still supremely happy with it. I highly recommend Len if you are thinking of having the process done - he is a pleasure to spend time with and is a wiz with hair.
Letisha is fabulous. Best highlights!
Berlin is the BEST!
Nice place, friendly kids workin the door, Ask for J. Jurkovich (yerkovick), great guys hair cut. Pricey, but she knows what the hell she's doin.
I came in for a color w/ Kwandee, who no doubt had skill with the cutting sheers, but colored my hair blacker than I had wanted it, making me look very gothic since I have relatively fair skin, and my natural hair color is a dark brown. He then proceeded to tell me how he abhorred it when Asian women lightened their hair and preferred them to stay true to their roots. I thought his comments were slightly offensive, quite uncalled for and borderline racist. Really weird experience, and not sure if I would come again.
I must have called 20 salons to get an appointment for color for the next day - no luck!! Then I called Level 4 and they got me in right away. And it was the best color I have ever had. Can't wait to go back. Highly recommend it.
