Okay, how exciting can a library be, right?  This place breaks the library mold, in my opinion.

Let's start with location.  Nestled into the corner of Lakeshore Park just a stone's throw away from the shoreline of Lake Michigan and within view of this glorious body of water, you'll find this glamorous building sitting unpretentiously hiding the magic within.

Besides the usual array of books, magazines, movies, CDs, Newspapers, Internet access, etc. that you might find in any library (twice its size, I might add), you'll find it staffed by the best people in the business that not only take pride in their work, but truly bring a spark of energy and enthusiasm that you would not expect in such stoic surroundings.

When you walk in and see the pleasant decor, complete with a sitting area and fireplace, you know you aren't "in Kansas anymore", or any other typical library for that matter.  You feel like you entered a place removed from the hustle and bustle of the real world.  Like something out of a Twilight Zone episode, you've entered a special place that is more like a living room on the lakeshore ready to fill your soul with amazing tales while you sit and relax in the comfortable surroundings.

But besides the physical location and construction, did I mention how special the staff are?  They are truly what raises the library above the norm because anyone can build a fancy brick building, fill it with books and surround it with fancy landscaping.  The heart and soul of such a structure is best defined by those that bring it to life.

So there you have it.  The secret is out.  Sure, LPL has features like so many other libraries; stocked full of books, etc. and is part of a consortium that exchanges material amongst its members so that it can leverage a much larger collection of material than it would rightfully hold.  But the magic is something that the staff brings to the equation and it is something you can only experience by stepping inside and discovering it for yourself.  Start with the activities for children and young adults and you'll soon see what I'm talking about.

Even though I don't use the library as much as I would like to, it is a fine example of our local community spirit and one of our greatest assets.

Often seems like most of the books I want to check out when I'm at the Manitowoc library (I live in Manitowoc) are held at the TR library. What the heck! Well I do know that the TR library has a darn good selection, and they have lots of great programs for both kids and elder kids. Love their Flickr site and all the pics that Jeff takes around the city of events and whatnot (although I don't see too dang many that show Stumpjack Coffee...a serious deficiency in my oh-so-humble opinion). I should give it four stars because of that but that would be disingenuous...they deserve 5 stars because it's true, they are the best dang library in town!
