Best custard I've ever had, and I've been all over Brooklyn and Sampled some very close 2nd's when I was in/at Coney Island. But nothing else around here comes close. They've been around for over 50 years, and unlike their local rival Kopps, Leon's can boast having had a celebrity Chef or two stop by and visit their sole Southside location (opposed to the 3, and at one time, 4 locations Kopps has) to film the 1950's style drive-in custard stand in action and to feature it in a segment of their show. Another thing unique to Leon's is the fact that very little has changed about it's appearance aside from maybe the 10' x 6' menu signs posted on each side of the building, which are still hand painted every two years or so to keep them looking nice and clean. I am partial to the double butter pecan cone (about $1.39 if I remember correctly), the Raspberry Sundae w/pecans on top and extra pecans on the side, $ @ around $2.19), the lime soda vanilla float was a favorite from childhood that I still enjoy occasionally, the Banana Split ($2.39 & + depending on how many scoops you want) is also delicious, and their "Original Spanish Hamburger" and Chili Dog are two amazing "solid food" staples if you're feeling a bit hungry or aren't yet in the mood for custard. The Spanish Hamburger is really a Sloppy Joe/Manwhich of sorts that comes from an old family recipe which belonged to the owner's father who is also the stand's namesake, the late Mr.Leon Schneider, and is made from scratch.
Cones are available in up to 5 scoops, which is known fondly as the Jumbo, and they offer 3 standard flavors; Vanilla, Chocolate, and Butter Pecan. As well as one of the three rotating 'flavor of the day' custards which are Raspberry, Maple Syrup, and Strawberry. I grew up 8 blocks away, went to grade school 1/2 a block down the street, and spent a summer working there, and can tell you firsthand that they are extremely clean, and very serious about health-code practices, aside from practicing high standards in customer service. So do yourself a favor, and go get some Custard!

*a fun fact: Leon's is the actual inspiration for Arnold's in Happy Days which was the Burger joint that The Fonz, Richie and their friends were always hanging out at.

Leon's is a great choice for a late night dessert in Milwaukee (they are open until midnight every day, hooray!). It's an old-fashioned drive-in with nowhere to sit; just park your car and walk up to the counter, where they will take your money (though not much- the total for two double dip cones was less than $4) and serve you some tasty, tasty custard nice and quick. (The chocolate custard is so delicious and creamy!) The atmosphere is nostalgic, and there is lots of great neon which is always worth an extra star in my book.

They also have good customer service- a guy in line ahead of me had his custard fall off the cone and they replaced it for him without a thought. Yay Leon's!

I had first been introduced to Leon's when it was mentioned as one of Neil Diamond's favorite Milwaukee places in the documentary Song Sung Blue. It completely slipped my mind to visit it after relocating.

Prices were reasonable. The root beer shake I had was completely amazing! Service was quick and with a smile. I brought home a pint of raspberry custard and that was just as incredible as the shake I had earlier.

I have yet to visit Kopp's, so I really can't declare Leon's as my favorite custard in Milwaukee. I can promise you it's my favorite place to get custard though...such a cool building with neon lights. I need to revisit at night, that's for damned sure.

Finding myself at 27th and Oklahoma on an unseasonably warm February night (God I'm really from Wisconsin. It was probably 35.) could only be considered fate. The fact that there were about 25 people in line could only give credence to Sheldrake's hypothesis of morphic fields. I had been at Oscar's, crushing a Big O, so there would be no Spanish Hamburgers for me. Went with a chocolate malt, and it was spot on. My buddy grabbed a raspberry malt and wouldn't shut up about it. President Clinton stopped here at some point, but they've assured me that they bleached the counter after his visit so there is nothing to fear.

This is THE BEST custard you will find anywhere.  The chocolate custard is really the best i've tasted.  I know it's always Kopp's or Leon's, well for me sorry Kopp's but Leon's is really the best.  It's sooo creamy, and not too sweet.  Kopp's custard is a little on the sweet side for me.  Because Leon's custard isn't too sweet it really lets the flavor come through and really shine.  They are open until midnight which is awesome.  You get those late  night cravings and it's the perfect place to go.  I've been there many times right before midnight and they are always busy.  That should tell you something!  If you are a chocolate lover you have to try their chocolate custard.  You won't be sorry.  Their hot fudge sundae with pecans is awesome too.  It's actual thick hot fudge and not syrup.  Like I said, they are always busy but they really do get your order to you quickly. By the time the person behind you is done ordering you usually have your order.  It's just under nine dollars for two jumbo (5 scoop) cones/dishes.  Very good prices.  One time my daughter and I ordered and were waiting for our cones when the people behind us ordered a one scoop in a dish.  She looks at me and asks, how can they only eat just one scoop?  lol  It's that good.

Go before summer's over, or you'll be sorry you didn't!

Basic flavors here, folks. It's the quality of the custard that's up for debate. (Or not, if you know what's up... )

    The eternal question yet remains:

    Kopp's or Leon's?

I compare custard makers by the vanilla they produce. Based on that, Leon's TAKES THE CAKE.

I have tried every custard maker in Milwaukee. If Petroff's was still around, it would take the cake for malts. Leon's is awesome, 1950s era custard shop with cashiers that seem to not care whether you are human or not; they just keep slingin' the cream.

If you want food, you should go across the street to Mazo's. All Leon's has is loose meat sammiches and hot dogs.

So go check out this American icon. You won't be sorry.

The best frozen custard I have ever eaten (but, the ONLY frozen custard I have eaten).  Hot dog was fairly simple but good.  I can see why this place is a mecca for Milwaukeeans.

Note: Chicago people- this is THE place to go to either before or after a Brewers game.  It's south of Miller Park and can be gotten to on the way north.  The building is beautiful and untouched vintage, I love it.

Frozen custard is apparently non-existent in northern California, so any time I go home to Wisconsin, I need to get my fix.  This was my first trip to Leon's.

Perfect frozen custard at great prices with large servings.  It's not fancy, and there's no seating; but after 8 months of no frozen custard, I would've sat on the 90 degree blacktop and eaten it...deliciousness.

Leon's is truly a Milwaukee staple.  With its quaint design and fantastic custard, it's simply an awesome place to visit, particularly during the hot summer months.  The custard is simple but delectable and can easily give Kopp's a run for their money in terms of the best custard in Milwaukee.

    Tips:
-They only take cash, so leave your credit cards at home.
-There's no seating, so if you go with a group, be prepared to hang out in the parking lot or eat in your car.
-Leon's gets SUPER busy with long lines, so try to go at off-peak times if possible.  Otherwise, enjoy the people-watching.

Hands down the best frozen custard I have ever eaten in my entire life. I spent 4 years in Milwaukee as an undergrad at Marquette. During that time I ate plenty of custard from places like Kopp's, Culvers, Pizza Shuttle, etc. NOTHING compares to the creamy deliciousness I received at Leon's. My biggest complaint with custard is that often I feel like the flavors are too strong and overpowering when mixed with the richness of the milk fat it just ends up being too much. At Leon's the flavors were perfectly balanced, perfectly enjoyable. My graduation weekend I took my family here and after everyone's first bite we all agreed: B.C.E. (Best Custard Ever!)

I can't believe I forgot to review Leon's!  I grew up coming to this place - just like so many other Milwaukeeans.  Best hot dogs I've ever had in my life.  It doesn't seem like they do anything that special to them, but they're just really tasty and better than any other hot dog I've ever had.  They're not huge or anything... I often pig out and get 3 of them as a meal - but they're cheap so I don't mind.

Oh, they also are neck-and-neck with Kopp's for the "best custard" title.  I often get a pecan hot fudge sundae when I eat here and the pecans seem special... in a good way.  Not sure where they're from, but they just seem better than the rest.

Useful information?  It's an old school drive-up - meaning there's no where to sit - you gotta eat in your car.  Also, it gets very busy in the summer and on the weekends, but their employees move the line along pretty fast.  It *might* also be cash-only, but don't hold me to that.

For hot dogs or custard, this place is tops.

Leon's is a nostalgic favorite for me, my grandparents brought me here all the time. It's a completely old school drive in place with counter service only, so there no place to sit. But you drove in right? So sit on your bumper and enjoy some great people watching.

    You will get:
*A line, even in winter, even when it's snowing
*Old fashioned favorites like tin roof sundaes
*The best vanilla custard in town. That's right, Kopp's, I said it!

    You won't get:
*Banana chocolate cake blast with white chocolate chips. You want crazy flavors, go to Kopp's. Here you'll get vanilla, chocolate and something else from a list of 10 flavors that haven't changed in 30 years.
*Burgers - they have something described as a "Spanish Hamburger" but I think it's a sloppy Joe thing. I haven't had the courage to order it.
*Overcharged - 'cause the prices are CHEAP!

Leon's is one of those historical places where you will cry if it ever goes away. Leon's defines custard, with discernible flavors much like a fine wine...taste the rich medley of eggs, cream, and balance of sweetness. The butter pecan custard tastes of grandma's roasted pecans with a hint of salt for those sweet and salty lovers. A friend from Texas will buy a pint of butter pecan to satisfy the length until the next visit. If you love chocolate malts, Leon's is THE best with lots of malt powder and rich chocolate.

Leon's has a bit of personal nostalgia for me, as my grandparents used to have a home and flower shop where the parking lot now lays, called Nimmer's Flowers. Every time I get ice cream with my dad, we hear tales of growing up in the area. Look at the building's neon lights, then take a moment to imagine classic cars and a time when the simplicity of ice cream represented the simplicity of living.

The food menu is simple with "hamburger", which is actually a sloppy joe, and hot dogs. Nothing else...why would you want anything else when you can get the best banana split in the city. That has most of the food groups, right?

As a Milwaukee-an born and raised, all I have to say is that of all that places I have had gelato, ice creme and custard...Leon's takes the cake. Nothing but heaven melting in your mouth. I tend to order a hot-fudge, caramel sundae with strawberries, crushed pineapple and salted pecans. I can honestly say that Culvers, Kopp's, Dairy Queen are phenomenal places BUT Leon's has yet to be topped.

I highly recommend Leon's to anyone who is driving through Milwaukee. The parking lot is always jammed packed so be prepared to look for odd parking! The randomness of the crowd will surprise you but also show you that Leon's is undiscriminating of any gender, race, age or zip code! It's the place to be!

    And....President Clinton even stopped here!

Leon's makes the best custard in Milwaukee, hands down.  I can't even think of any place that is close.  I realize that the dinner options are not that great, but I feel like that it just gives them more time to concentrate on their delicious custard.  Just don't go here for dinner, unless dinner is a hot fudge sundae.   The only thing to remember is they only take cash. Leon's has been the place to go since I was a kid, and it still is just as good as ever.

With just 4 flavor choices on their menu, Leon's has perfected frozen custard. I tried the butter pecan and maple flavors. I have never tasted anything like the butter pecan-so rich, creamy and out of this world good. Its combination of flavors is so intricate and perfect I could not believe it. As you pull into the parking lot, you feel like you are transported back in time. Leon's is a must do on your next trip to Milwaukee!

I must admit that this is my absolute favorite custard. This stand has been there my whole life. I like that the custard has a little bite to it and I don't know how they do that. The taste is the best and the price is very cheap. It's a community experience to wait in the line with people of all ages and to hear how everyone is so gung ho for this place.

I *HEART* LEON'S. They saved my Mother's Day. The mint custard I had was creamy & delicious, & the hot fudge was its perfect accompaniment. Read on for the story of how they saved my Mother's day...

Mother's Day is always kinda sucky for me ever since my mother died in 2004. This past holiday, I didn't want to talk to anybody or do anything...except eat frozen custard. Even though there are other custard stands near my home, a lot of people whose custard opinion I trust kept telling me I ~had~ to try Leon's.  All I really wanted that day was peace & custard, but I didn't want to head over there early in the day cause I figured it'd be busy. So instead I had a quiet day of not answering my phone & movies that most certainly would NOT make me cry, and decided to do some grocery shopping later in the evening. I went to Wal-Mart, & as I passed Leon's I noticed that their lights were still on. Schweet, I would get my custard yet!
What's that they say about not grocery shopping while you're hungry? Yeah, I made that mistake. It took me way too long to get those groceries, and as I frantically looked at my watch loading the groceries into the car, I fussed at myself under my breath- I just knew Leon's would be closed. No custard for me.
Sure enough, Leon's lights were off when I pulled out of the parking lot. I looked a little closer & slowed down as I drove past, & saw what looked like a couple at the window being served anyway. In a last minute rash decision, I peeled into the parking lot & ran frantically to the window...just in case they'd take pity on me & sell me one scoop. "All we have is mint", the young fellow at the window said as he snickered at my breathless request. Excelsior! I love mint! They gave me two scoops with hot fudge, and even smiled & wished me happy Mother's Day as they shut the window. I drove home happy, trying to eat my custard & not spill it as I drove.

Happy Mother's Day to me. I can't wait to eat that tasty stuff again.

Solid piece of Americana. It has been around since 1942, and featured on the Food Network show  "Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmern."

Honestly if you aren't in the general vicinity, I wouldn't go out of the way.  If you are headed to Miller Park from the south prior to a Brewers game, I would go for it!

Pickins are slim for food.  You can get a hot dog, chili dog, or "hamburger" which is actually more like a sloppy joe. The same meat that is used on the hamburger is the meat that is used on the hot dog to turn it into a "chili" dog.  The meat is finely ground beef, very juicy with a lot of onion flavor coming through.  The sauce (and I use the term loosely) is more like a thin beefy broth which may not even have tomatoes or tomato sauce in it.  They describe it as "spanish."

The true attraction here is the frozen custard.  I have to say it was probably the best butter pecan I have ever had. EVER. They make the custard right there, and you can see them working the machines through the front windows.  There is no seating inside, or outside for that matter.  It is a walk-up joint, just like the really old days. Pick it up and go, or eat it in your car, if you can snag one of the few spaces out front.  I saw quite a few folks drive up, pick up a container of custard to go, and head out. Like a drive through without the drive thru, and mainly for frozen custard.

Service was ok, and we didn't have to wait too long, but I could see how the staff expects you to know what you want BEFORE you get in line.

If this appeals to you, and you are up for a fast-food type meal in your car, then I highly recommend it over the big box food joints.  Who doesn't like to support the little guy after all?

Leon's has great custard, yes. But a good experience is about more than just having good custard, it's about service and the rest of the menu offerings. Leon's custard is just as good as Kopp's with less flavor offerings than Kopp's. So let's get down to the rest of the Leon's experience...

I finally got around to ordering one of their "famous" hamburgers, which the counter girl reminded me was served Sloppy Joe style (which I  knew, but the signage may as well say it, so she doesn't have to say it every time). I was excited to try it! But rather than a traditional saucy Sloppy Joe, the Leon's burger is greasy ground beef with onions with no sauce, and no flavor. The small hot dog with everything on it wasn't worthy of a Little League ballpark. No onion rings or french fries available, since they don't do any fried foods at Leon's.

Let's talk about the service here...I've never come here when I didn't feel rushed or that the service was being short with its customers. If there's something on the menu that's different, put it up on the signage. Yesterday I watched an employee tell a gentleman he was wrong when the guy was just trying to order verbatim what was advertised on a sign. Then the employee kept getting orders wrong to boot, without a hint of apology to the customers.

Leon's wins points for the old-fashioned Drive Thru set up. But seriously, if we're going to keep comparing Leon's to Kopp's, then Kopp's wins by a landslide for consistent, polite service, with a great burger, and with an equally good custard as Leon's.

I've been to Leon's a few times on two separate business trips. Clearly, it's a destination I will enjoy, again. A cheeseburger here is called a spanish burger which reminds me of the pizza burgers and taco burgers I had in my high school cafeteria days. Basically, a sloppy joe sandwich. And really really good! Highly recommended. Custard, also good. Soda fountain drinks, cool! And the best part is the legend that this place inspired the creators of 'Happy Days' sit-com. How great is that?!?

This is my 3rd culinary stop in Milwaukee on Black Friday thanks to "Road Food" by Jane and Michael Stern.

I crossed the street for desert at Leon's after a wonderful burger meal at Mazo's.  Leon's is a neon-rimmed 1950s throwback that serves a wonderfully creamy frozen custard.  I stuck with a vanilla cone, which was delicious all wrapped up in its American flag wrapper.  My only regret is that I didn't order a larger cone.  Who needs Fro-Yo when you can have this ultimate frozen desert?  And there's no need for mix-ins or silly flavor names either.  Sundae's, malts, and banana splits are also available at very reasonable prices.

Please note that there is no seating available here, so you're either going to have to eat your custard standing up, back in the car, or at home.

The cash-only policy is just fine as many of us DO still carry cash, especially the small amounts necessary to indulge like this.

This is the sort of place that makes me wish I had two mouths and didnt live all the way on the east side... I went down on some butter pecan and raspberry custard followed by some spanish burgers. My life has not been the same since (that was only about 4 hours ago, but i can feel a change)... The custard was so perfect I could literally hear myself getting fatter while eating it, and I didnt care. These spanish burgers were to die for. Seriously, if they outlawed these things, and the only way I could get them was to import them from china illegally, I would do it. Even if the punishment was death... Go here.

Among people who are either from Milwaukee, or live there, there are two camps. The north side/Northshore has Kopps, with Leon's representing the SOUTH SIDE. Since my parent's house, the casa of my birth, is 3 blocks away from Leon's, I'm south side all the way, baby.

I've been going to Leon's my entire life. In high school, it was a Super Sundae drenched with raspberries and salted pecans with vanilla custard - almost every day after school. It's a wonder I remained so skinny. Yesterday, it was a simple double dip of the chocolate to hook my unsuspecting companion on the lifelong addiction that is Leon's (yes, I'm an enabler), and a simple 1/2 gallon - nothing excessive - of Butter Pecan custard for me. My companion gasped . . .  "a whole 1/2 gallon?!?"

Oh, ye who are about to be converted . . . trust your custard overlords. Give in to their creamy goodness. You can't fight it. Let them rule you. You will be happy in their creamy embrace!

On the way back to Chicago, I thought I was going to have to pull over and put a spoon to that 1/2 gallon, I was dreaming of the creamy goodness, alternating with salty pecans. Mhhrrrhrhrwwwwwrrr . . . . *slurp* Wait, did you say something?

Like butter on ice it is. With salty pecans. Oh yes, my friend. We who are from the Dairy state accept nothing less than FULL FAT dairy, baby. None of this frozen yogurt blasphemy for us - how do you think we maintain our cleavage?

Leon's has burgers too, and "real" food. But when it comes to burgers, I jump camps and go to Kopps for their sewer-lid sized  Butter Burger.

And it's well documented among my friends that I don't have much of a sweet tooth. However, for Leon's, I will beg shamelessly for that sweet, sweet custard. Ah yes, it's good to be a junkie.

Leon's I love you.  It was worth standing in the cold rain last Thursday to eat the deliciousness that is in a Leon's cone.

Sidenote:  I have to admit that I'm a bit biased towards Leon's because my most wonderful Grandfather (god rest his soul) loved a trip to Leon's.  This, surprisingly, was my first visit, but I felt like I had been there 100 times from hearing about it over the years from him.

Thankfully, the custard was as good as he had described many times.  (That would have sucked if Poppa's favorite custard was really crappy!)  I had the smallest option they have and it was still two huge scoops!  For like $1.68.  How do they do that?  I had one scoop chocolate and one vanilla.  I have to say that the vanilla was better.  It was awesome and creamy and wonderful.  Even in the pouring cold rain.

For me, there was a bittersweet feeling as I ate my custard.  Almost like something was missing, but still there.  I don't get to Milwaukee much anymore, but when I go back, I'm DEFINITELY going to Leon's!

I am a lifelong Milwaukee resident.  I grew up eating Leons custard.  Since then I've tried the others in town.  I enjoy Kopps and Culvers but Leons is way ahead.  I don't know what they do differently but it is just better than anywhere else i've ever tried.  Butter Pecan is the best.

I'm pretty sure Happy Days was (at least partly) based on Leon's-- it's so cute and kitchy, you kind of expect Ritchie Cunningham to work there.

But, that's not the reason to go to Leon's... it's the amazing custard.  They have a special flavor of the day, but also always serve vanilla (so creamy), chocolate (rich, dark, and not overly sweet), and butter pecan (seriously buttery with nuts blended in).  The butter pecan used to only be a "special flavor," but, it was apparently so popular that it became a daily flavor (good decision, Leon's).  Anyway, all the flavors are excellent-- and at a little over $1.50 for a double dip, you really can't go wrong.

I grew up going to Leon's and nothing has changed.  It is still the BEST custard in the City of Milwaukee.  If you live in Milwaukee, or are just passing through, Leon's is a Must Visit!!

Wow.  That's all I can say after stopping at Leon's for the first time tonight.  Their custard is off the hook.

I had to go for the simple vanilla double for once in my life and it was fabulous - so creamy and rich.

The American flag wrapper on the cone is that extra touch that makes your want to belt out the star spangled banner 'cause you feel so damn American sitting there on a hot summer night with dozens of other people who have flocked here to enjoy some delicious custard, or perhaps a hamburger and fries.  Okay okay, I did not sing, but the whole scene is super classic Americana.

I've known this place since i was born. Being younger, my parents would always take us down to Leon's during the summer and we'd get rewarded with a double scoop of vanilla custard. Getting older, i branched out to their broader flavors and have grown to enjoy it.

Like said, the place is a drive-in a reminiscent of something in the 50's era, as when it was created. Not only do they offer custard, but a large variety in American foods.

I mean, it must be good if the President ate from there.

Their chili dogs and "Mexican" burger are mediocre at best but this isn't the reason you go. The frozen custard is good but I would only go if it was nearby or on the way. No reason to go out of your way for this place.

I think I spent the little money I had in college at this place. My friend and I would visit Leon's about 2-3 times a week. We'd check in to see what the flavor of the day was -- and back then, the flavor used to always be butter pecan (the one flavor I loathed and was tired of). Chocolate or the orange dreamsicle flavors were always the best.

I'd take all of my visitors to this place, until I discovered Kopps. Still, Leon's has a special place in my heart because it was affordable and they gave me hearty servings.
