I dream of this place.
Portuguese doughnuts or malasadas are like a beignet/doughnut/brioche all combined in one. They are delicious at Leonard's. I prefer these over Champion's any day (Champion's are kind of tangy). There may constantly be a line, but that's okay. Totally worth the wait. Also, I don't know, this is just me, but stick to the simple malasadas. Maybe try out the cream filled ones? But I never like those ones that much. They're also more expensive, so yeah.
Only only eat them hot and on the same day. I'm small, but I can down 2 easy.

Maybe only tourists and transplants go to this one because all the reviews are from people that don't live in Hawaii...weird, yeah?
Anyway, this place always has FRESH malasadas (like burn your mouth fresh), and they always have monthly special fillings (i.e. mango and pineapple) to go with your standard custard, chocolate, and haupia.
You gotta eat them fast though because unlike pizza, they just totally suck when they're cold or if you have to reheat them. If this place wasn't right down the hill from my house I probably wouldn't go there much, but they're always a great treat to eat while you're waiting at the airline gate to catch your flight back to the mainland...mmm...
So, what's better than a crowded Leonard's bakery in Honolulu? Nothing. But what's second best to that is Leonard Jr's in Pearl City. It's ridiculously cramped in there, seriously. I mean the workers even look like they need more room in there. But I really don't give a sh*t how sqiushed I feel when I'm ordering...all that really matters is how my full my stomach will be once I polish off a half dozen Malasadas in 4 minutes... This time around I got "adventerous" and ordered them filled with custard, haupia, chocolate & the flavor of the month(s) - Mango custard. WHOA!!!!!!!! Buss Yo Mowt!!!!!!!! As long as I've been eating Malasadas (33 years) I have yet to find a place that makes them better than Leaonard's...and now Leonard Jr's. What makes the "Jr's spot" so appealing is that it's only a couple doors down from... SHIRO's!

Dear Leonard's malasadas,
I'm sorry to say, but I have to end our relationship. No, it's not the 'It's not you, it's me.' And no, there isn't anyone else. Trust me. There could never be anyone else after you. And don't even think that I'm swinging the 'other way.' There is no other way. We just can't be together anymore.
This is a very difficult thing for me to do, but it must be done. For the sake of my hips. And waistline. And okole. And arteries.
There's nothing else that you could have done differently. You were perfect in all your ways. Round, puffy, sugary, golden brown fried deliciousness. Yes, you may have been crispy on the outside, but beneath that thin exterior, I know you're just a big softy at heart.
And please, don't tempt me. Not with that mixture of cinnamon sugar, or the coconutty flavor of haupia, or the chocolatey goodness of dobash, or the sweet, creamy goodness of the custard, or your tantalizing flavor of the month. It would simply be too much for me.
Actually, there was one thing I would have changed. Maybe you could have gone straight to other body parts that could have used that boost. Or if you left me as quickly as you entered. Then maybe I wouldn't have to leave both of us heartbroken.
Before I end this, could you please thank that kind man who worked there that one Saturday? It was a bad day for me, and I think he could tell, so when I asked for one custard, I was pleasantly surprised to find two in my package. And no, it's not him. Really, there is no other.
Maybe we'll meet again one day...
Heartbroken,
Jane

There is nothing more I dislike than Malasadas thats been out for a while. I love the fact they don't make my malasadas until I order it. My favorite has to be the custard filling; its like a taste of heaven in my mouth =) Out of all the bakerys that serve malasadas, I always go to this one for a late night delight.

This Leonard's doesn't taste as good as the one in Honolulu but it's still really good and will fill my cravings. They taste the best when they are hot and still puffy.
I can't believe I forgot to review this location!!!!
After having saimin at Shiro's it's a must to top off the meal with some malasadas.
What's unique about this spot, like the one in town, unlike the Wagon at Waikele is that this spot offers the filled flavored varieties of Malasadas. Every month or 2 there is a designated flavor. Varying from mango, lilikoi, passion fruit, guava, banana, and some others I do believe. They also still offer the standard haupia, chocolate, and custard.
I knew June offered a good flava that we missed last year and so on the 29th we made sure to see what it was, and low and behold it was Mango! Nomnomnom!
Sure it's just mango pudding squirted in there, but it was good. Not too sweet either.
So if you're ever on the Leeward side of the island and got a craving for malasadas, don't forget to make a stop at Leonard Jr's!

Ah... malasada's and even better I don't have to drive to town to get them. That's right, the Leeward side has its own little malasada store in the middle of Waimalu shopping center and its just like the original in town.
So if you're looking for that deep fried portugese donut goodness you gotta come here. There's rarely any line and best of all you can save the gas and just drive here instead of going to town.
Definitely check it out.

I've heard so much about Leonard's malasadas. On my first visit here, I got a strawberry cream filled one. Didn't quite live up to the hype to me. It didn't taste too much better than a donut, but it was still pretty good. Maybe I need to try some of the other malasadas on the menu.
So I had these before when my friend flew from Hawaii, but I need to try it fresh. We picked up 6 original and it was so hot it was almost burning through the box. Well I could not wait and I just ate one while it was super hot. I was so happy I did. It was so light and fluffy and beyond yummy. The dough felt like it could float on air and it is a must you eat them as soon as you get them. If you wait too long the sugar will melt and the malasada will lose its puffiness. I want to try the cinnamon sugar version, but I'll have to get have them brought to me. Thinking about them now brings back great memories of the warmth and sugary goodness.
Yum yum yum. Imitations do not compare to these clouds of joy. Not even the ones you try make at home using Pillsbury biscuit dough. Doughn't do it! I was just in Hawaii and enjoyed these sugar coated pillows after a hike up Diamond Head. They must be eaten, at most, 15 minutes after purchase. The dough is like no other. Eaten hot and fresh the cooked dough melts in your mouth leaving behind a coating of sugar on your happy lips. Only if I had a glass of ice cold milk to wash it down...
succinctly, deep fried sugary heaven.
